Want to turn any real-life photo or realistic character image into a high-quality cartoon, 3D animated figure, or classic anime style completely for free? In this tutorial, I show you how to leverage your local Stable Diffusion pipeline combined with ControlNet to perfectly preserve your original character's pose, facial structure, and composition while completely swapping the visual aesthetic!

This processing workflow runs locally on your own computer and is completely compatible across Automatic1111, WebUI Forge, and ComfyUI, as long as your interface has basic access to ControlNet modules.

I walk you step-by-step through the layout:
* The Workflow Setup: Running your baseline image through ControlNet to pin down poses, edges, or depth lines before shifting styles.
* Going Disney/Pixar: Crafting smooth, Western cartoon looks using specialized stylistic checkpoints.
* Shifting to 3D Rendered Styles: Upgrading your image output to look like a modern cinematic 3D animation movie asset.
* Going Classic Anime: Seamlessly restructuring your characters into sharp, vibrant cartoon illustration paths.

00:00Hello guys, welcome back with me Chow Chow 2025.
00:04Today we're going to learn how to convert an image into a cartoon or anime.
00:11We're going to do it using ControlNet.
00:15We can use Forge, Automatic 11, 11 or Comfy UI.
00:20Video about how to install and use ControlNet will be put on the video description.
00:26The first step is to search a model that mainly used for anime, cartoon or 3D.
00:35In this example I use Hello Kid 25D and Disney Pixar cartoon type B for cartoon, Ani-merge
00:44for realistic anime, 3D animation diffusion for 3D anime, and Aniverse and Siren Mix 1
00:54pruned FP16.safetensors for anime style.
01:00You could just search all of this model in CivitA.com.
01:05Next, open your Forge.
01:08Select your anime or cartoon model.
01:10Place your prompt.
01:18Activate ControlNet.
01:24Click Enable.
01:26Select Pixel Perfect and Allow Preview.
01:30Select Line Art.
01:31For Pre-Processor Realistic Line Art.
01:36And for model select Control V11PSD 15 Line Art.
01:42Or you could use any other line art model.
01:45This could work with other ControlNet too, like Soft Edge.
01:49But I prefer this.
01:50You could actually execute this and get the anime or cartoon version of the image.
01:55But there will be a high change the image will not cartoonize as much as you want.
01:58Put the image that you want to convert into the ControlNet drop image here.
02:04Here are some examples.
02:22You could adjust this using Control Weight and starting and ending step.
02:26In Control Weight, reduce the weight.
02:29You could use 4 to 9, just experiment.
02:33Also increase starting Control Step to 1 or more.
02:37And reduce ending Control Step to 9 or less.
02:40This 3 setting will give the model a freedom to cartoonize the character.
02:48By doing this, you will have cartoonized more the character.
02:55Also you still able to control how the image look by editing the prompt.
03:21It has a really great time.
03:24This is a little bit more of a change.
03:30But don't talk later.
03:43Plus you can see that on the screen.
03:43So now you could use line art.
03:45start enemy if you want, but the result will be way far from the original.
03:49Here are a bunch of result that I create with all the model.

Direct Image-to-Image rendering can sometimes warp your character's original facial structure during a heavy style shift. Running your source photo through a solid ControlNet pass locks down the base composition perfectly, giving you the freedom to test models like HelloKid or Disney Pixar Type B without losing the pose. Which checkpoint combination is generating the cleanest cartoon results on your local rig? Let's discuss your rendering setups down below!
