00:05Penintasad! Lawan Lawan, Lawan, Lawan, Penintasad!
00:12Hundreds of Orang Asli from 19 tribes and communities
00:16gathered outside the Rural and Regional Development Ministry in Putrajaya on Friday.
00:21Hidup, Hidup, Hidup, Hidup, Orang Asli!
00:28The protesters directed their demands at Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi,
00:34who oversees the Ministry and the Department of Orang Asli Development, known as JAKOA.
00:39They called on the government to formally recognize customary territories
00:43under the Aboriginal People's Act, 1954, halt encroachment on their villages
00:48and seek community consent before approving any projects on their land.
00:53Hidup, Hidup, Hidup, Hidup, Hidup, Hidup, Hidup, Hidup, Hidup, Hidup, Hidup.
00:54Lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan, representing several communities, accused JAKOA of siding with developers
01:00and state governments instead of defending Orang Asli interests.
01:05Protesters are also calling for the agency's Director General
01:08to be replaced with an official committed to protecting community rights.
01:13Zahid has said amendments to the Aboriginal People's Act are in the works,
01:17intended to strengthen, not deny, Orang Asli protections.
01:22But Orang Asli groups say the consultation process has fallen short,
01:26with proposals failing to expressly recognize customary land.
01:30A memorandum from the protesters was accepted by one of Zahid's special officers
01:34about an hour into the rally.
01:47Ha!
