00:00I don't want him to think that he has to kill you and take you out because you are the
00:05only person
00:05that knows. I'm not no f***ing rat, bro. I know you're not a rat, but we gotta play it safe.
00:10This is Liam McItasney. Sitting next to him is Anthony Curry, his best friend. On January 31st,
00:182017, the two friends meet up for what appears to be a casual conversation. But in reality,
00:24Anthony has been growing suspicious that Liam is hiding the most disturbing secret.
00:28What have you been up to? Hiding from the cops. Got the FBI on my ass, dude.
00:35What are they questioning? Oh yeah, a lot. About what? About killing Sarah.
00:41Two months before this footage was recorded, 19-year-old Sarah Stern disappeared without a
00:46trace. Her car was found abandoned on a bridge, and police found no sign of foul play. But Anthony
00:51is convinced Liam had something to do with it, and the only way to prove it is to make him
00:56talk.
00:57What's what happened? You didn't hear about him? It was all over the news.
01:00Right, but I didn't know if he, like, went through it.
01:03With Anthony asking more and more questions, Liam is starting to get suspicious.
01:08I come out of the shower. Next thing I know, the entire Belmar police force is at my f***ing
01:16door, taking Preston away. You are the only person on this planet that knows besides Preston.
01:21I'm not no f***ing rat, bro. I know you're not a rat, but we gotta play it safe.
01:25What Liam doesn't know is that minutes earlier, someone else was in the car.
01:29This is Detective Davis at her exit. Today's date, January 31st, 2017. I play to my phone
01:35on a supporting device on Anthony Curry. Please state your name and date of birth.
01:39Anthony Curry, 52097.
01:42If Liam has a gun, the police won't be able to protect Anthony, but he's willing to risk his
01:47life to expose the truth about what happened to Sarah Stern so that it never happens again.
01:52The problem is, Liam decides to check Anthony for a recording device.
01:57Dude, you can't blame me for doing this, right? I gotta feel you up real quick, alright?
02:05No disrespect.
02:06I'll show you.
02:07No disrespect, okay?
02:09I'm not no f***ing rat.
02:14Three months earlier, November 24th, 2016, 19-year-old Anthony Curry is driving from Brooklyn
02:20to Neptune City, New Jersey for Thanksgiving. He left over a year ago to pursue his filmmaking
02:25career in New York, but he never misses an opportunity to come back and see his friends
02:30and family on holidays. After an almost three-hour drive, he notices he received a bunch of text
02:35messages from his best friend, fellow film buff Liam McItasney.
02:39Anthony Curry is an aspiring film director, and he went to high school with Liam and Sarah.
02:48So tell me when you first became friends with Liam.
02:51We didn't get real close to like junior year of high school. He liked the Sopranos,
02:55we played music together.
02:56After dinner with his dad, Anthony heads to Liam's place. Back when he lived in Neptune,
03:00the two often shared movie ideas, and this night is no different. But instead of the usual
03:05trope-y slasher or godfather knockoff, Liam pitches him a grounded crime story about a group
03:11of friends betraying one another.
03:13He tells you it's an idea for a movie.
03:15I thought after a movie, yeah. I make movies, I'm a filmmaker. He used to tell me ideas all the
03:19time
03:20about, you know, films I should make and all that stuff. And he like told me about this idea he
03:27had.
03:27Liam's pitch sounds like this. Imagine a group of friends who have known each other since
03:32childhood. As they become adults, everything changes when one of them, the only girl,
03:37finds a huge stash of money in an abandoned house. In dire need of cash for one reason or another,
03:42one of the girl's friends tries to rob her, but ends up killing her instead. Unsure of what to do,
03:48the perpetrator loops in the others, and together they get rid of the body by throwing her off a
03:52bridge. Did he seem excited about this idea? Yeah, he was like hyped. He was an energetic kid.
03:57I was like, yeah, he's a little nuts, but I don't know. I just thought it was a movie.
04:01Before we continue, we'd like to thank this episode's sponsor, Cloaked. Our sponsors help
04:06us continue our mission to bring powerful survival stories to light. And today, we've partnered with
04:11Cloaked. Cloaked gave us a challenge. They asked us to enter our phone numbers into their site,
04:15and what we found was disturbing. At Unseen, our work online means we're highly aware of privacy,
04:20but seeing our social security numbers laid out like that was something else. We take measures to
04:25keep our information safe, but the online playing field isn't always level. Data brokers make billions
04:31selling our information, and every account you create leaves a trail of personal data behind,
04:35making you more vulnerable. Cloaked breaks the cycle by removing exposed data and letting you
04:41quickly generate unlimited burner emails, usernames, and numbers for new signups. Instead of your real
04:46info being sold, brokers get worthless data. Now you're playing them. Cloaked has turned the tables
04:53on the whole industry. Go to the link cloaked.com slash unseen and enter your phone number for a
04:58free security scan to see if your SSN is for sale right now. The scan only takes a few seconds.
05:04If
05:05you're ready to take it back, use cloaked.com slash unseen to get 30% off any plan. And now,
05:11back to the case of Sarah Stern.
05:14Nine days later, December 3rd, 2016, Anthony had already returned to Brooklyn a week earlier
05:21without giving much thought to Liam's strange movie pitch. But back in Neptune,
05:25events disturbingly similar to Liam's story are beginning to unfold. Late that night,
05:31single father Michael Stern receives an alarming phone call from the police.
05:34It was about 3 o'clock in the morning. I got a call from the Monmouth County Sheriff's Department
05:41asking me about who drove the Gray Oldsmobile. And I said, my daughter drives the car.
05:47The police are asking because, less than an hour earlier, someone had reported seeing a Gray
05:52Oldsmobile abandoned on the Belmar Bridge. I first thought there was an accident. She wasn't far from
05:57the house. It was only maybe a mile or so. So she could have walked back. Earlier that week,
06:02Michael left New Jersey for a trip to Florida with his girlfriend, leaving Sarah home in Neptune.
06:08His daughter is 19 years old and fiercely independent. He assumes that, whatever happened,
06:13she would have been more than able to take care of herself. But when the police inform him that her
06:17keys were left in the car, doubt starts to creep in. Calling every friend and family member he can
06:31think of, Michael quickly realizes that no one has been in contact with his daughter in the last
06:36six hours. Michael gives the police the go-ahead to investigate his house as he rushes to get into
06:48his car with his girlfriend. A missing girl who disappeared on a bridge? That sounds a lot like
07:00the story Liam pitched to Anthony just a week ago. But miles away in New York, he's completely unaware
07:06of what's unfolding in Neptune City.
07:18The police department. Hello? Anybody home? The resident is Mike Stern. We're trying to locate Mike.
07:27Okay. But the dog's in a cage. So somebody put the dog in a cage. That's strange.
07:36This is a neighbor, I think, astern.
07:40Yeah, we're trying to find Sarah. We're not saying she's missing. We haven't been able to
07:44find her yet and there's a little concern about her. So...
07:46You could never lose Friday, your dog.
07:48The dog was in the cage at the house. How much do you know so far?
07:52Sarah's neighbors said she saw her earlier that day with her friend Liam,
07:55moving some of her late mother's things. Carla had passed away from cancer a few years earlier,
08:00and the family still hadn't gone through most of what she left behind. Her passing had been
08:04particularly difficult for Sarah, who was just a teenager at the time.
08:08What mindset was she in today? Is she depressed? Is she...
08:12I think she's...
08:13Is she...
08:15All right. We're going to continue this search then. We'll be calling Liam to see if Sarah's over there.
08:21Liam's out, back there.
08:22Liam's on the other block. We're going to go over there now.
08:2519-year-old Liam McAtasney is one of Sarah's closest friends. He's in his second year of college
08:30and pursuing a career in law enforcement. Friends describe him as social, funny, and obsessed with
08:35movies, especially horror and crime dramas. Following the neighbor's directions, the police
08:40quickly arrive at his mother's doorstep.
08:45Is Liam home?
08:46So, what is it?
08:47We're looking for a friend of his. Sarah Stern, does he hang out with her?
08:49Yes, there is a very good friend of his.
08:51He's at 12 Holly?
08:5211 Holly Street.
08:5311 Holly?
08:54Bucky over there.
08:54Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, of course.
08:57As this is happening, the police keep in touch with Michael. The news that his daughter had spent
09:02the day with her good friend, reassures the panicked father.
09:05Liam and Sarah and the group, they used to come over, swim in the pool. They'd hang out at the
09:11pizzeria, and they, you know, they would goof around and, you know, laugh.
09:15When police arrive at Liam's doorstep, they find the 19-year-old alone. He claims to have
09:20no idea what happened to his friend, but he's quick to suggest Sarah was struggling.
09:25Liam.
09:26Here, Liam.
09:27You got a second? Can I come in and talk to you real quick?
09:29Yeah, no problem, boss.
09:30Is, uh, Sarah here by chance?
09:32No.
09:33When was the last time you talked to her?
09:34I was with her today.
09:35What time?
09:37Uh, before I went to work.
09:38Um, turn some light on if you don't want.
09:40I mean...
09:42You have a cell phone you can reach out to her on?
09:44I actually haven't been able to find my cell phone.
09:46We're trying to find Sarah. What was her mindset last time you talked to her?
09:52I just know she's been trying to get away and tell me she's going to Canada. Her dad is crazy.
09:59All right, keep looking for your phone to see if there's any messages or anything.
10:02You hear anything? Call the Neptune City or Neptune Township Police to all of us now.
10:10This is police body camera footage recorded just hours after 19-year-old Sarah Stern's car was found sitting empty
10:16on the Belmar Bridge.
10:18Police never found her body, so first thing tomorrow they'll be searching these waters as a desperate father waits in
10:25agony.
10:26Given the statements from Liam and the neighbor, the police's leading theory is that there's no foul play involved in
10:31Sarah's disappearance, although she remains officially missing.
10:35Investigators focus their efforts on the Shark River, looking for her body.
10:39The issue is that the river's tidal waters push everything out towards the ocean.
10:43After the police-led search is declared a failure, the community rallies around Michael.
10:48Well, it's been a full week since 19-year-old Sarah Stern of Neptune was last seen, and now her
10:52family and friends are organizing a search party.
10:55Sarah's father, Michael Stern, has told media outlets that he hopes around 200 people will volunteer,
11:02and he hopes that the search tomorrow will bring some answers as to where Sarah is.
11:08Nearly 300 volunteers gathered to comb through 6,400 acres of coastline, the largest search for a missing person in
11:15Jersey Shore history.
11:17We're just hoping to search any possible area with more people than just, you know, the local authorities, because we
11:26just, you know, it's a big area.
11:27Among the volunteers are many of Sarah's friends and neighbors, including Liam McItasney, whom the police interviewed a week prior,
11:34and Preston Taylor, Sarah's prom date.
11:36She's pretty strong, so hopefully we're going to find something today.
11:42I met her back in high school, and it's just, it's just shocking.
11:47I just hope we can find her.
11:49Over the next month, as the winter cold sweeps over the Jersey Shore, all search efforts die down.
11:54But this doesn't stop Sarah's father.
11:56Mr. Stern was down at those docks every day.
11:59Walk in the docks, walk in the shoreline, just wouldn't give up hope.
12:02My heart broke for him.
12:03Neptune police director Ed Kirschenbaum drives past him on his way to work every day.
12:08Powerless.
12:09I knew Sarah.
12:10She worked at a popular restaurant in Neptune City with my daughter.
12:13For her father to not know the whereabouts of his daughter was devastating.
12:17Although the search has failed to find Sarah, investigators won't give up on her case.
12:22And the more they learn about the 19-year-old, the less they believe that she had disappeared willingly.
12:27Friends and family insist that Sarah would never have abandoned her dog.
12:31And police find both her passport and Canadian money still sitting untouched in her room,
12:36contradicting Liam's claims that she may have left the country.
12:39Detectives also find little evidence that Sarah had any serious issues with her father.
12:44In fact, she had texted him right before disappearing.
12:47By now, investigators are increasingly leaning toward the possibility of foul play.
12:52But they are already one month into the case and still have no suspects.
12:56We were at a standstill.
12:57We were at a dead end.
12:58The case was growing cold by the minute.
13:01While all of this is happening, Anthony Curry has been going on with his life in New York City,
13:06completely unaware of what is going on in Neptune.
13:08That's until he sees a post about Sarah's disappearance on social media,
13:13mentioning that her car was found on a bridge.
13:15It's been a while, but Anthony remembers Liam's movie pitch with its oddly similar plot.
13:20And just as he begins connecting the dots, Liam suddenly resurfaces.
13:25How often was he trying to contact you when Sarah went missing?
13:29Almost every day.
13:31What was he texting you?
13:32What was he saying to you?
13:33That he wanted to see me.
13:35That it was like urgent.
13:36Anthony isn't sure whether he's just being paranoid,
13:39or if Liam might truly be involved in Sarah's disappearance.
13:42In any case, it's a lot of pressure for the 19-year-old,
13:45so he seeks out the help of his father, Eddie Curry,
13:48who still lives in Neptune and is much closer to the case than he is.
13:52Eddie doesn't hesitate and immediately puts his son in contact with Detective Michael Bonanno,
13:57one of the case's leading investigators and a personal friend of the Currys.
14:01I know the family very well.
14:02I've known Anthony since he was young.
14:04And Eddie was concerned that he had some information on this,
14:07what may have happened to Sarah.
14:09I was shocked.
14:09The problem is that Anthony has no real evidence.
14:12Some investigators even wonder if he's making the whole thing up.
14:16But following a polygraph test, the police are convinced.
14:19And to top it all off, Anthony receives a strange message while still at the station.
14:24That message that was sent via Snapchat said,
14:27have the police spoken to you?
14:29And Anthony responded that we had not.
14:32It was from that moment that Anthony Curry became convinced
14:36that he may have had something to do with Sarah's disappearance.
14:38Liam is now calling him multiple times a day, every day.
14:42And Anthony doesn't have to push too hard for him to start divulging, compromising information.
14:47This changes things drastically for the 19-year-old informant.
14:50We saw Anthony Curry's demeanor when he provided us with the information.
14:53We saw the concern that he had.
14:57He was scared.
14:59He was scared.
15:00Did you feel like your life is in danger at all?
15:02If somebody's capable of doing that,
15:04you could try to hurt my family or somebody I knew.
15:07Eventually, Liam reveals that he recently came into a large amount of cash from a girl he knew.
15:13He refuses to explain how he got it.
15:15But for Anthony and investigators, that alone is alarming enough.
15:19Police begin working with Anthony on a plan to get Liam talking.
15:23The first step is arranging a meeting between the two.
15:25We were going to ask Anthony if he'd be willing to allow law enforcement to monitor and record his communication
15:31with Liam.
15:32The initial text messages and Snapchats were relatively benign.
15:37Anthony, ultimately, on the telephone, asks him if he can borrow money.
15:40My camera broke, though.
15:43I dropped it on the shoot.
15:44It fell into a bucket of blood.
15:47You couldn't, like, spot me some cash from that girl's money, right?
15:51Uh, what do you need?
15:54You need, like, two, two?
15:57I mean, I'll pay you back after all these jobs work out.
16:00I don't care to do that.
16:01We need to talk about that, too.
16:03Do you have, like, anything left from it or no?
16:05Um, yeah, I don't know.
16:08I don't really want to talk about it right now.
16:11Okay, I'll see you Friday, then.
16:13This is Detective Davis Sidorakos of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.
16:17Today's date is January 31st, 2017.
16:20The approximate time is 10.26 p.m.
16:23I pledge him upon a supporting device on Anthony Curry.
16:26Please state your name and date of ours.
16:28Anthony Curry, 52097.
16:31Anthony drives away from the station.
16:32For testing purposes, detectives ask him to crank up the radio and sing out loud as they
16:37adjust their receiver.
16:38It's a surreal situation for the young filmmaker.
16:41He believes his friend may have killed someone, and in just a few minutes, he'll be sitting
16:45alone in a car with him.
16:47Still, Anthony feels he has no choice.
16:50If Liam really was involved in Sarah's disappearance, this might be the only chance investigators have
16:55to prove it.
16:56Anthony heads toward Ocean Avenue and parks beside the boardwalk overlooking Bradley Beach.
17:01It's freezing outside, and Liam could arrive at any moment.
17:24Assuming that the crime might have followed Liam's movie pitch, investigators suspect money
17:28might have been the motive behind Sarah's disappearance.
17:31Following their instructions, Anthony brings up his broken camera story again, hoping Liam
17:36might say something incriminating.
17:37But instead, the suspect begins casually complaining about the money he got from the robbery.
17:42The worst part of it is, I thought I was walking out 50 grand, 100 grand in my pocket.
17:48She had one safe, and she took money out, and she only had 10 grand.
17:55And this money, it's old money, terrible quality.
18:02I don't even know if I can put any of it in the bank.
18:04Anthony has to be careful with the questions he asks.
18:07He wants Liam to open up, but pushing too hard could raise suspicion.
18:11So, he tries to steer the conversation back toward the source of the money Liam mentioned.
18:16But almost immediately, the discussion takes a disturbing turn.
18:20So, what are you, you haven't hit it?
18:21Yeah.
18:22First, it was in my house for a long time, but then I stopped trusting Preston.
18:27Yeah, what's the deal with Preston?
18:29Was he...
18:29Nah, he's cool.
18:30Like, tonight, we were gonna potentially kill a bunch of people and get a bunch of drugs and money.
18:37And nothing.
18:40It's weird.
18:41Preston Taylor is Liam's roommate, and also a good friend of Anthony's.
18:45Realizing Liam is unexpectedly willing to talk about him, Anthony carefully shifts the conversation toward Preston.
18:51And again, Liam begins revealing far more than expected.
18:55This is Preston's thing this time.
18:57Sarah's whole deal was my thing.
18:59But I had planned Sarah's situation for me to be interrogated by cops.
19:07Like, that was a whole part of my plan to make me look not guilty.
19:11It's already been a few minutes since Liam entered the vehicle,
19:14and with Anthony asking more and more questions, Liam is starting to get suspicious.
19:19I come out of the shower.
19:20Next thing I know, the entire Belmar police force is at my f***ing door taking Preston away.
19:28You are the only person on this planet that knows besides Preston.
19:32I'm not no f***ing rat, bro.
19:33I know you're not a rat, but we gotta play it safe.
19:36As the conversation continues, Liam becomes increasingly paranoid.
19:40He repeatedly warns Anthony that Preston already wants him dead,
19:43and insists that they all need to meet before things spiral further out of control.
19:48Refusing to go back to their house, Anthony tries to stay calm,
19:51until Liam suddenly asks him to prove he's not wearing a wire.
19:57Dude, you can't blame me for doing this, right?
20:00I gotta feel you up real quick, alright?
20:03You're good.
20:05No disrespect.
20:06I'll show you.
20:07No disrespect, okay?
20:08I'm not no-
20:09Rat.
20:10Just across the parking lot, the detectives are on edge.
20:13From their position, they can't see what Liam is doing inside the car.
20:17People are like, do you think he's a hero?
20:18Absolutely he is, because he put himself in a situation where Liam has shown up with a gun.
20:23Even though the detectives were across the street,
20:26they would not have been able to save him.
20:28And he appreciated that and still did the right thing.
20:31Anthony doesn't realize it yet, but nearly everything Liam is describing
20:34matches the investigation detectives have spent the last two months piecing together.
20:39For starters, months earlier,
20:41Sarah had begun sorting through the belongings left behind by her late mother,
20:45and discovered a hidden stash of cash.
20:47We were told from a couple people about the money that Sarah found in her parents' second house.
20:54Sarah's mom had passed several years prior.
20:57I had been saving this money, and Sarah had found it.
21:00We were told her mother left there for her to find.
21:03But what disturbs investigators even more is how different Liam sounds.
21:07For weeks, detectives have been interacting with a seemingly polite,
21:11cooperative 19-year-old who presented himself as one of Sarah's closest friends.
21:38Sarah had never told her father about the money she found to investigators that had always seemed
21:43strange. But, according to Liam, Sarah believed Michael had previously taken money that was meant for her
21:48following her mother's death, leading police to initially trust Liam's insight.
21:53I know that when her mom died, she had money that was supposed to go to her, and her dad
21:58took that from her.
22:00Furthermore, investigators also reconstruct Sarah's final day.
22:04Security footage and witness statements confirm that Liam spent most of the day with her.
22:08Together, they moved boxes out of the Stern residence, visited neighbors, and later stopped at the bank where
22:14Sarah accessed her safety deposit box.
22:17She seemed very happy, and she asked me to hang out that night.
22:20And she was telling me that she wanted to move to Canada.
22:25She hugged me, and I was like, love you, and she was like, love you too.
22:29And that was the last time I saw her.
22:31She went to the Kearney bank.
22:33We have video from the Kearney bank.
22:34We have her signing in and opening up and accessing her safety deposit box.
22:39The video also shows Sarah leaving the bank.
22:41The final footage had been recorded late that night by a neighbor's security camera overlooking
22:46the Stern residence.
22:47Two hours later, Sarah's abandoned car would be discovered on the bridge.
22:51We suspected that it was Sarah, although we couldn't see her.
22:55It was dark.
22:56There was limited lighting.
23:00It takes the police and the prosecution two years to build their case against Liam.
23:04Nobody knows what happened in Anthony's car on the night of January 31st, 2017, except
23:10the police and the county's prosecutor, hence the following question.
23:14Why didn't you just arrest Liam McItasney right after that video recording?
23:19And the truth is, legally, you cannot just charge someone over their own admissions.
23:24You have to have corroborating evidence.
23:26We don't have anything like clothing, forensic evidence.
23:29We don't have Sarah's body.
23:31And the reason that's important is because when you prosecute a murder crime, you have
23:37to prove that someone was actually killed.
23:39And when you don't have the body, it's difficult to do that.
23:43But Prosecutor Grimiccioni has remained busy over the last two years.
23:47Even though he failed to get through to Liam, his team did eventually persuade Preston Taylor,
23:52the roommate Liam claimed wanted Anthony dead, to cooperate with the prosecution.
23:56Not only does Preston agree to testify against Liam, but he also helps police by reenacting
24:01the entirety of the events.
24:03This should have been a major asset for the prosecution, except that the defense had planned
24:07for this to happen.
24:08You don't always have the truth.
24:10Isn't that correct?
24:12I haven't been the best.
24:13Following his testimony, defense lawyer Carlos Diaz-Cobo completely strips Preston of any credibility
24:19by exposing to the jury how he lied and fabricated disturbing fake allegations against his own
24:25relatives, in an attempt to reduce the charges imposed against him.
24:29You made an accusation against somebody, except if you were sexually assaulted by that person.
24:34Right.
24:35And all those details that you gave, they were all false.
24:38They were all lies.
24:39Correct.
24:41We're talking about somebody who has admitted to making up stories, making false accusations
24:48against innocent people.
24:49He figures, point the finger at someone else, let's see if I can turn the attention away from
24:54what I did, what I'm responsible for.
24:57The prosecution gets off to a rough start.
24:59Next, they call a series of character witnesses, Sarah's neighbors, friends, and family members.
25:05One by one, they push back against Liam's version of events.
25:09Yes, Sarah was still grieving her mother.
25:11And yes, she had talked about moving to Canada someday, but that didn't mean she would abandon
25:17her dog, leave without her passport, or disappear without saying goodbye to her father.
25:22Next, prosecutors call Michael Stern to the stand, where he shares the final text messages
25:27he exchanged with his daughter while he was on vacation in Florida.
25:31Hey Dad, good afternoon, what day are you coming back from Florida?
25:35And there's a waving hand, sunglasses on a smiley face, a palm tree, and a little red
25:41card.
25:42I sent her a picture of a rainbow that had just appeared right around that time.
25:47You sent her a second picture?
25:49It's a picture of the castle in the Magic Kingdom at night.
25:53What did she say?
25:54Well, with an exclamation point, the castle looks so pretty with the lights and there's
25:58a star and a shooting star emoji after that.
26:02Okay, is that the latest time your daughter had contact with your daughter?
26:04Yes.
26:05But Michael's emotional testimony does little to shake the defense.
26:08If anything, attorney Carlos Diaz-Cobo seems more confident than ever.
26:13It's been 44 years since the last murder trial without a body to end in a conviction in Monmouth
26:18County.
26:19And according to the defense, this case won't be any different.
26:22They argue that the prosecution has no forensic evidence, no eyewitnesses, and no proof that
26:28Sarah is even dead.
26:29And with the Shark River leading directly into the Atlantic, experts agree her body will never
26:34be recovered.
26:35Based on the water level and the tides of that evening, I made an estimate as to how quickly
26:41she would have floated out.
26:43She would have been about seven miles offshore in 24 hours.
26:59But two weeks into the trial, just when the prosecution seems to be done for, they call
27:04one final witness to the stand.
27:06Anthony Curry, C-U-R-R-O-R.
27:09Do you know who Lee and Mack has had these?
27:11Yes.
27:12Were you guys friends?
27:14Yes.
27:16Do you remember an event that happened that you decided you don't want to be friends with
27:21them anymore?
27:22Yes.
27:22Okay.
27:23Now, I'm going to ask you this.
27:25Do you want to be here today?
27:27No.
27:27Why are you here?
27:29Doing everything.
27:31You see him fidgeting.
27:33You see him crying.
27:34He had not seen his video since that day.
27:38State would like her written to play court exhibit two.
27:42Dude, you can't blame me for doing this, right?
27:46I got to feel the uprope real quick, all right?
27:49You're good.
27:50No disrespect.
27:51I'll show you.
27:52No disrespect, okay?
27:54I'm not.
27:54We're at Liam Pat's Anthony down, looking for the old school wire that's along your chest,
28:00and that's not how we do things anymore.
28:02And after that, we couldn't believe what we were hearing.
28:06You don't have to question me.
28:07I'm in Brooklyn.
28:09The cops haven't questioned me.
28:10I know you're not a rat, but I did something really dumb.
28:14I planned it out for half a year.
28:15Yeah.
28:16Like, what?
28:16Did you have any of it thrown out for you?
28:19You didn't hear about it?
28:20It was all over the news.
28:21Right.
28:21But I didn't know if you, like, went through it.
28:23Yeah.
28:24And the worst part is, we threw off the bridge, and the body never showed up.
28:30It's probably all the way out in the ocean.
28:32But with his suspicions about Anthony finally put to rest, Liam begins describing what happened
28:37to Sarah in extraordinary detail.
28:40All right.
28:40So, I'm hanging out with her.
28:44She has, we went to the bank, she took some money out, not all of her money.
28:48We're counting out, and then it took me a half an hour to kill her.
28:53I thought I was going to be able to choke her out and have her out in, like, a couple
28:57minutes.
28:59My biggest problem was the dog, and her dog laid there and watched as I killed her.
29:05Didn't do anything.
29:07Please.
29:09The confession is shocking, but in the video, Anthony remains calm.
29:13He proceeds with the script he prepared with the police.
29:16After the opening, he was supposed to ask about possible witnesses.
29:20Nobody was there?
29:21Grandma?
29:21No.
29:22Nobody was there.
29:23Even her dad wasn't there.
29:24He was in Florida.
29:25So, I have to leave.
29:27I f***ing dropped my phone at Sarah's house.
29:30My phone was at Sarah's house.
29:32I had timed everything out.
29:34You should have left it in your f***ing pocket.
29:36What were you doing?
29:37Strangling someone.
29:39Then, Anthony doesn't even have to ask anymore.
29:42Liam starts telling him everything.
29:44Preston, I go over to her house, take her safe, bring that over to my house before we
29:49do anything.
29:50Then we take her body out of the bushes and drag it over to her back fence.
29:56And I crawl, get into her car, and I back up.
30:01There's a security camera across the street.
30:03Right.
30:04So, I had to act like her.
30:07I watched her.
30:08Every time she backed out, she does the same thing.
30:10So, I backed out exactly like she did and drove off.
30:13Did you put her in the trunk?
30:15No, I put her in the passenger seat of her own car.
30:18According to Liam, the plan had been carefully thought out, but when it came time to dispose
30:22of Sarah's body, things almost fell apart.
30:25I go up, open the door, unhook her, pull her out, start dragging her to throw her over,
30:33and then cars start coming up.
30:34I see, like, headlights coming.
30:36I try to get her over, and I can't f*** my leg up.
30:39So, I grab her body.
30:42Dude, I had superhuman strength, and I threw it in the car.
30:45And I f***ing picked it up, and her feet were up here, and her head was down there.
30:51And three cars go by.
30:54And I'm f***ing losing my sh**.
30:56Anthony takes the opportunity to ask the one question investigators still need answered.
31:01What role did Preston play?
31:02And then Preston comes over the bridge, goes around, makes a U-turn, comes up behind me.
31:09The two of us throw the body over, and then we're out.
31:13Oh, so you needed help?
31:15I needed help, yeah.
31:16As the conversation winds down, Liam begins reflecting on what happened.
31:20What he says next is perhaps the most disturbing thing he reveals all night.
31:24You always think you're gonna try these little things, and you're gonna change.
31:29But it didn't change, it just doesn't do anything.
31:31It's just f***ing crazy.
31:33I don't feel any different, and I don't think about it.
31:38It's a movie movie.
31:41It's your life, you might as well make it all.
31:44What, are you gonna live some boring ass life?
31:46The things he said and the things he did were absolutely disgusting and horrifying.
31:53How any human being could do that to another person is just...
32:00It's just unfathomable.
32:03It's evil.
32:04Pure evil.
32:06Following Anthony's testimony, the defense falls apart.
32:09What the defense put on was just...
32:12It just seemed like nonsense.
32:14It's just, you know, let me make a story up today and present this and try to make it
32:20look like my client's innocent.
32:21He was doing an audition.
32:24He was making things up, trying to impress that horror film director.
32:28I think that Anthony Curry, he's pointing a finger at my client and trying to make stories
32:34up so that he can better his career because it's not that great.
32:38That was a no-movie audition.
32:40That's real life.
32:41Trust me, I worked in film for years.
32:43I know the difference between reality and fiction and that's reality.
32:49Anthony had nothing to gain by turning Liam in.
32:51If anything, coming forward only put him in danger.
32:54But he did it anyway.
32:56For Sarah.
32:57For her grieving father.
32:58And because he knew someone had to.
33:00The most significant development in this case by far was Anthony Curry coming forward.
33:04And then his courage because it's absolute courage.
33:08It was a tough decision for him.
33:10He didn't have to come forward.
33:11Changed his life too.
33:13Had he not come forward, we probably never would have got an answer.
33:18Unsurprisingly, following Anthony's testimony, the trial ends with the guilty verdict.
33:22But while justice has finally been served, the events surrounding Sarah's murder continue
33:26to shape the lives of those closest to the case.
33:29In the end, Anthony decides to stay in New Jersey.
33:32He releases his first film, Trap, about the violent youths he grew up with in 2022.
33:37And his next film is currently in production.
33:40Just a few doors down from the movie theater, we happen to stumble upon an actual movie set
33:45for an independent film being shot here in New Jersey.
33:47A lot of people don't know, you know, the first movie studio was in New Jersey.
33:50So I feel like we're kind of bringing, like, bringing Hollywood back.
33:53Along with a possible 2026 release date of the indie film Into the Black, New Jerseyans
33:58have a lot more to look forward to.
33:59Together with Sarah's friends and community members, Michael pays tribute to his daughter
34:04by organizing public events and fundraisers in her name.
34:07One of the things that the community does is hold an annual art festival in Sarah's memory
34:12with proceeds going to pay for scholarships to art students.
34:17It's good to see everyone coming out and everyone kind of healing, kind of through art.
34:22Art was at the core of Sarah's being.
34:24She wanted to go to Canada to study and become an artist herself.
34:28But now that she's gone, Michael wants to keep her passion alive by helping young artists
34:32pursue their dreams in her stead.
34:34Sarah's life was worth something.
34:36And I think that if she can be an inspiration to somebody else, I think that would be a good
34:43thing for her and me.
34:45I think she would be proud and I think she would be really happy to see that we're all
34:48still making art because, you know, that's what she loved to do.
34:51To the public, Sarah became the face of a tragedy that brought the entire community together.
34:56But Michael remembers her for who she truly was.
34:59It's my daughter.
35:00Smart kid.
35:01Good kid.
35:01Friendly.
35:02Cared about people.
35:03Never hurt anybody.
35:06She was just a wonderful, wonderful child.
35:09You know, becoming an adult and starting to live her own life.
35:13Her life may have been cut short, but her legacy lives on.
35:17We do have justice for Sarah.
35:19That's a good thing.
35:22I miss Sarah.
35:25But this is a nice tribute to her.
35:36Jill is a beautiful woman.
