00:00:04I'm going to take it out, you guys.
00:00:32I didn't know anyone was still here.
00:00:34You must be doing those exercises.
00:00:37Can you really see a difference?
00:00:38Yeah.
00:00:40Just stand over here.
00:00:48You're a tough one.
00:00:51Didn't want to get with the program.
00:00:56No!
00:00:57No!
00:01:00I'm sorry I had to be so hard on you.
00:01:03No!
00:01:04No!
00:01:05Don't!
00:01:05No, don't!
00:01:39No!
00:03:21You're going to be late for Casey King's coach if you don't hurry.
00:03:26Mom?
00:03:29Thanks for making this happen for me.
00:03:33I'll get that scholarship and go on to college.
00:03:36That's what your dad wanted for you.
00:03:39I will.
00:03:48I can't look at you all for something about later.
00:03:51Students participating in Saturday's track and field events, please meet Coach Handsome on the field.
00:04:10Listen up!
00:04:14What do we have to do to win?
00:04:15Tina, let's hear it.
00:04:16Believe it.
00:04:17Julie, how does it go?
00:04:18Believe it.
00:04:19Everybody, Brad, Julie, let's hear it.
00:04:21Believe it.
00:04:22Okay, don't forget.
00:04:24If you believe it, you'll achieve it.
00:04:26The moment you disbelieve, you lose.
00:04:29All right.
00:04:30Now, before we get started today, we've got a new secret weapon.
00:04:34Everybody, say hello to Mickey Carlisle.
00:04:38Hi, Mickey.
00:04:38She's a mature runner, she's got great stats, and best of all, she runs the 800 meters.
00:04:44So, Julie, you're not the only half-miler anymore.
00:04:47Remember, average is as close to the bottom as it is to the top.
00:04:53Nobody on my team is average.
00:04:56Not for long.
00:04:58Believe it.
00:05:00Achieve it.
00:05:02If you can imagine it, you can do it.
00:05:05Winning is scary.
00:05:07Dare to risk winning.
00:05:09Most people won't.
00:05:11Most people choose losing.
00:05:13It's easier.
00:05:15It's understandable.
00:05:16It's more comfortable.
00:05:17Well, a lot of things are comfortable.
00:05:20Sleeping is comfortable.
00:05:21Death surely is.
00:05:23Running is many things, but it is not comfortable.
00:05:27Tina, get the stat board.
00:05:28Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
00:05:31Mom, you won't believe it.
00:05:33I'm running and meet on Saturday.
00:05:35So soon?
00:05:36Coach says I'm ready.
00:05:38It's really a team, Mom, not like Taft at all.
00:05:40And everyone's a serious runner.
00:05:42That's great, honey.
00:05:44I've got to eat light meals seven times a day to keep my metabolism constant.
00:05:47That's what triathletes do.
00:05:49Okay, slow down.
00:05:51Coach says the workout the body gets running is three times what it takes for bodybuilding.
00:05:55Okay, I know the drill.
00:05:56Just give me the menus and recipes.
00:05:58Coach is amazing.
00:06:00It's like he knows your inner fears.
00:06:02What stops you from achieving your goals?
00:06:04He has this thing called the results method.
00:06:06You focus on your weakest area.
00:06:08Figure out a device and work on it every day.
00:06:38Good.
00:06:39Real good.
00:06:41But there's this one girl, Julie Vaccaro.
00:06:43She's the only one who's beaten my time.
00:06:45Well, then that's your first goal.
00:06:46You have to beat Julie Vaccaro.
00:06:48I'll do another 200.
00:06:59Hey, I heard you were top-ranked at your old school.
00:07:03Yeah.
00:07:05Race you to the fence.
00:07:07Okay, go.
00:07:37What's wrong?
00:07:39My leg cramped.
00:07:41Julie, what the hell's wrong with you?
00:07:44It's three days to a meet and you risked two of our best runners?
00:07:46I didn't hold a gun to her head.
00:07:56Rule number one.
00:07:57Never run without warming up.
00:08:00Into the whirlpool, now.
00:08:02God.
00:08:08Coach?
00:08:10You're going to be late for class.
00:08:13I do understand about warm-ups.
00:08:18You know I've been watching you.
00:08:20What did you think?
00:08:23I think that you could be a winner.
00:08:27I hope you're right.
00:08:30If there's one thing I know about Mickey, it's running.
00:08:34The fact that you're a little raw is in our favor.
00:08:37There's fewer bad habits to unlearn.
00:08:39You just watch, listen, and absorb.
00:08:43Your legs will take care of the rest.
00:08:46But not without warming up.
00:08:56All runners in the women's 800 meters, please check in with Marshall on the infield.
00:09:01This is the last call for the first team of the women's 800 meters.
00:09:13Are you sure you're warming up?
00:09:15That's what it looks like.
00:09:21This is the final call for the women's 800 meters.
00:09:24Let's bring it in.
00:09:25All competitors should be checked in in Marshall in the start area.
00:09:28Okay.
00:09:30Concentration is the name of the game.
00:09:32I can run you through the ringer.
00:09:34I can get you ready.
00:09:36It's what's in your heart that makes you a winner.
00:09:48It's all blonde.
00:09:50Get your split, even if she's got a big lead.
00:09:53She'll come back to you.
00:09:54Wait up the final curve and eat her up.
00:09:57She can't outkick you.
00:10:04Have your attention to the track now.
00:10:06We're at the starting line.
00:10:07The women's 800 meters is about to get underway.
00:10:11Runners, take your mark.
00:10:26Go!
00:10:27Go!
00:10:52Runners are entering the final turn.
00:11:15Runners are entering the final turn.
00:11:15Runners are entering the final turn.
00:11:15Runners are entering the final turn.
00:11:16Runners are entering the final turn.
00:11:16Runners are entering the final turn.
00:11:16Runners are entering the final turn.
00:11:18Runners are entering the final turn.
00:11:42Carlisle, what were you doing out there?
00:11:44Because it sure as hell wasn't what I told you to do.
00:11:46You want to stay on this team.
00:11:48You better listen to me.
00:11:51Stand up.
00:11:56Next race, you talk to your legs.
00:12:00As you run, really talk to them.
00:12:02Repeat over and over.
00:12:04Easy, free, balanced, now.
00:12:08You got that?
00:12:12Walk it off.
00:12:17At the final bend now.
00:12:20About 150 to go.
00:12:23Easy, free, balanced, now.
00:12:28Easy, free, balanced, now.
00:12:35Go, go, go, go, go!
00:12:47Here they come down the whole stretch.
00:12:51Come on!
00:12:52Yes!
00:12:53Yes!
00:12:54Yes!
00:12:55Yes!
00:12:57The winner is Mickey Carlisle.
00:13:00We're really high.
00:13:03Yes!
00:13:08It's great that you won, but I don't like that he chewed you out in front of everyone.
00:13:12He's the coach, Mom.
00:13:14He knows what he's doing.
00:13:15I don't care who he is.
00:13:16Yelling at people...
00:13:17It's no big deal.
00:13:18Coaches do that all the time.
00:13:20Well, I don't remember your father ever browbeating anyone.
00:13:23Coach Ansem's different.
00:13:25It's his style, that's all.
00:13:26I mean, I won the race, shaved off three-tenths of a second for my personal best.
00:13:31And how do you know you wouldn't have done that anyway?
00:13:33Why are you being so weird about this?
00:13:36It's like you're mad I won or something.
00:13:37That's not true, honey.
00:13:39I love that you won.
00:13:41I was so proud.
00:13:42But I don't like to see you or anyone treated badly.
00:13:45That's all I'm saying.
00:13:47Okay?
00:13:50Okay.
00:13:52Good.
00:13:53Let's celebrate.
00:14:18What are you listening to?
00:14:20What?
00:14:21What are you listening to?
00:14:23Oh, um, Free Eleven.
00:14:25Yeah, I like them too.
00:14:27You know, they're playing the amphitheater next Friday.
00:14:29Really?
00:14:30Yeah.
00:14:31My mom has a friend who can get tickets.
00:14:32Do you want to go?
00:14:34Sure.
00:14:35Um, I mean, I think so.
00:14:37Yeah, that'd be great.
00:14:40Gotta go.
00:14:47That was great.
00:14:50At your last meet, you were right there for the first 400.
00:14:55When you should have sat in on Julie, instead you ran on the rail.
00:14:59But I recovered.
00:15:00It'd still cost you two meters.
00:15:02We have to fix this before it does you in.
00:15:05And trust me, it will.
00:15:07What can I do?
00:15:08How hard are you willing to work?
00:15:12How about you have to devote more time to track?
00:15:14Didn't you tell me you're already having trouble getting your math assignments in on time?
00:15:17I know, but I...
00:15:18No, no, no, but.
00:15:19You're up at four.
00:15:20You have to track by five.
00:15:21You're so tired you're falling asleep over your homework.
00:15:24And now you say you have to do more?
00:15:25Uh-uh.
00:15:26I'm sorry.
00:15:30Oh, good.
00:15:30Just the man I want to see.
00:15:33Mom, don't.
00:15:34Wait in the car.
00:15:38Coach Hanson.
00:15:39Yes.
00:15:40Hi, I'm Margaret Carlisle, Mickey's mother.
00:15:42Oh, hi.
00:15:43So pleased to meet you.
00:15:44We've been meaning to give you a call to tell you how happy we are to have Mickey on the
00:15:47team.
00:15:47Oh, well, thank you.
00:15:48I appreciate that.
00:15:49But there seems to be a problem developing here.
00:15:51Well, what kind of problem?
00:15:53Mickey's schoolwork is starting to suffer.
00:15:55And frankly, with the schedule you've got her on, I don't see how she can keep up.
00:15:59Well, don't underestimate her.
00:16:01Oh, I don't underestimate her.
00:16:03I'm just trying to be realistic.
00:16:05Well, believe me, the discipline she learns from me will help her with her studying.
00:16:08And with you pushing on the academic end, she'll do just fine.
00:16:12Well, I hope you're right.
00:16:14But in the end, her education is more important to me than running.
00:16:16So I want you to know that...
00:16:17I understand completely.
00:16:18But trust me.
00:16:20I've been doing this a long time.
00:16:42Hey, I was watching her run.
00:16:44You've got a really great breakout.
00:16:46Thanks.
00:16:46Um, so you want to go to a movie or something?
00:16:50Myers!
00:16:51This is not a social club.
00:16:56Mickey, you're up.
00:17:07Go!
00:17:37You're up.
00:17:38Sixty.
00:17:38I can't believe it.
00:17:41Believe it.
00:17:42But I've been running faster than that on the machines.
00:17:45That's why only competition counts.
00:17:48Me standing here with a stopwatch, wind, distractions, all of which and more can happen at a meet.
00:17:54You have to learn to deal with it.
00:17:56But I'm doing everything.
00:17:59Don't you meet me in my office after we're done here.
00:18:01I think I see the problem.
00:18:05I'll send this video to a great sports clinic.
00:18:07Get your alignment analyzed by experts.
00:18:11You just stay in your regular stride and relax.
00:18:16You're still developing.
00:18:18The way you carry your shoulders, the weight of your hips, can throw off your spine.
00:18:23Now, slow down.
00:18:26I need to get to know my runners.
00:18:29If you have a problem with your stride, we'll fix it.
00:18:33Any internal obstacles, we'll fix those too.
00:18:35Internal obstacles?
00:18:37Any thoughts that get in the way, mental bad habits.
00:18:40Running can be as much mental as it is physical.
00:18:42My dad used to say that.
00:18:44Your state of mind is everything.
00:18:46You gotta work your mind the same as you work your muscles.
00:18:52Okay, that's it.
00:18:55Get dressed, I'll walk you out.
00:18:57Okay.
00:19:02You got a boyfriend?
00:19:04I don't have time for dating.
00:19:06It's a good attitude.
00:19:08Boys will just distract you.
00:19:11What are you thinking about out there?
00:19:13When you run?
00:19:15I'm trying for nothing like you want us to.
00:19:18I can tell you've got something on your mind.
00:19:22I think about my dad a lot.
00:19:25How he died and how maybe it was my fault.
00:19:28He was pacing me when he had his heart attack.
00:19:31Blaming yourself for something like that is ridiculous.
00:19:34And really harmful.
00:19:36Not just in running, but in life too.
00:19:39Nothing good can come out of it.
00:19:41You gotta learn to control your thoughts, just like you do your muscles.
00:19:44That's what makes a champion.
00:19:48Go on, go home.
00:19:49Rest up.
00:19:50We got a lot of work ahead of us.
00:19:56Yep.
00:19:58A lot of work ahead of us.
00:20:03So tell me about the videotaping.
00:20:05All I did was walk back and forth in front of a video camera.
00:20:09That's all it was?
00:20:10Walking back and forth?
00:20:11Yeah, why?
00:20:13Just curious.
00:20:14You know me.
00:20:15I like to get all the details.
00:20:16Coach says the sports lab can isolate the individual muscle or tendon that throws a runner off.
00:20:20Isn't that incredible?
00:20:21It seems like running's become more science than sport.
00:20:24I just hope you remember to have some fun.
00:20:26I have plenty of fun, but now I have a chance to win.
00:20:29That's good.
00:20:30That's great.
00:20:31But remember what I said about your grades.
00:20:33Oh, that's Tina.
00:20:34I gotta run.
00:20:35Bye.
00:20:35Bye, sweetheart.
00:20:36I love you.
00:20:37Love you too.
00:20:38Mickey?
00:20:42Bye.
00:20:46I thought I'd run down for you what else you're gonna need to qualify for that scholarship.
00:20:51Besides athletics.
00:20:52Yes.
00:20:52Three letters of recommendation from academic teachers.
00:20:56Okay.
00:20:58And colleges like to know that you have other interests besides track.
00:21:02Like what?
00:21:04Join a club, something like drama or journalism.
00:21:06And of course, good grades.
00:21:09Well, my grades won't be a problem.
00:21:11Well, I see from your records you're a little weak in math.
00:21:15You can't fall below a 75 or you're off the team.
00:21:19Is that for every marking period?
00:21:21Yes.
00:21:24We have tutors.
00:21:26All you have to do is show up after school.
00:21:27But I have practice after school.
00:21:33Hey, you look like you just dropped the baton in the four by four.
00:21:37I wish.
00:21:39You know, I'm a really good listener.
00:21:42My guidance counselor said I could be taken off the team if I don't keep my grades up.
00:21:45And I'm terrible at math.
00:21:48That's all you're worried about, Matt?
00:21:50That's all?
00:21:52I don't have a problem with geometry, but trig is like my worst nightmare.
00:21:55Ah, trig's a snap.
00:21:57For you, maybe.
00:21:59Okay, well then get a tutor.
00:22:01They got a great tutoring program here.
00:22:03The only time they operate is when we have practice.
00:22:07Well, then I'll help you.
00:22:09What do you mean?
00:22:11I'll tutor you.
00:22:12Me.
00:22:13After practice.
00:22:14Great.
00:22:15Thanks.
00:22:28Julie scares me.
00:22:30I think she's more scared of you.
00:22:33You know, before you came along, she was the fastest.
00:22:36I beat her one time.
00:22:38Who knows if I can do it again?
00:22:40You were faster a week ago.
00:22:42Then your form's gone to hell.
00:22:45Why are you giving individual training sessions to Mickey?
00:22:50You mean like I did with you?
00:22:52She's fast, but she's got no power.
00:22:56Running against you is what will eventually make her reach for it.
00:22:59Just like running against her is what will make you reach for that final kick.
00:23:04Mickey Carlisle is the best thing that could have happened to you.
00:23:07What's this special about her?
00:23:11Mickey Carlisle could be a minute next Casey King.
00:23:24Come on, girls.
00:23:26600.
00:23:27Let's go.
00:23:32Okay, let's go.
00:23:35Let's go.
00:23:37Light up.
00:23:43Set.
00:23:46Go.
00:23:48Go.
00:23:51Let's go.
00:23:53Go.
00:23:57Go.
00:24:03Go.
00:24:04Go.
00:24:05Go.
00:24:05Go.
00:24:06Go.
00:24:07Go.
00:24:07Go.
00:24:30Are you okay?
00:24:32What happened?
00:24:33It's my knee.
00:24:36Damn it, Julie.
00:24:37We could be penalized for that.
00:24:39I didn't mean to.
00:24:40Not to mention injuring one of your fellow teammates.
00:24:42Get off the track.
00:24:44It was an accident.
00:24:46Get off the field.
00:24:47Go home.
00:24:49I don't want to have to look at you anymore.
00:24:57It's all right.
00:25:00In there?
00:25:02Yeah, okay.
00:25:05What about that?
00:25:07Fine.
00:25:12It's okay, really.
00:25:14Thanks.
00:25:15Hop down and walk in a circle.
00:25:19I think it scared me more than anything else.
00:25:23Yeah, it scared me, too.
00:25:25Drawing.
00:25:29I got the results from the video.
00:25:32Those guys at Gray's Sports Clinic are magicians.
00:25:34They pin down where your stride's off.
00:25:37Hop back up.
00:25:37I'll show you.
00:25:39I've got a math quiz.
00:25:40They can take me off the team.
00:25:41I've got to be home to study.
00:25:43Well, it's your career.
00:25:46Can we do it tomorrow?
00:25:49First thing in the morning.
00:25:52Well, I hear you got Brad to coach you in math.
00:25:57I have my spies.
00:26:00Brad's a smart boy.
00:26:03But, you know, if you're going to be a track star, there are sacrifices.
00:26:07You can't live like regular kids.
00:26:10Brad and I are only studying together.
00:26:13Mm-hmm.
00:26:15You tell Brad I said to behave himself.
00:26:23Wow, so until 1980, your dad was a world-class runner.
00:26:27And teacher and coach.
00:26:29He ran long distance.
00:26:31The USA decided not to compete that year.
00:26:34Sounds like your dad was really cool.
00:26:37I think I got my stubborn streak from him.
00:26:40Maybe it's not stubbornness.
00:26:41Maybe it's determination.
00:26:56God bless you.
00:26:58Oh, thank you.
00:26:59They sent me home.
00:27:00No way at a hospital a nurse can be sick.
00:27:02You must be Brad.
00:27:03Mickey told me you might be coming over.
00:27:05Yeah, hi, hi, hi.
00:27:06Oh, no, don't check hands with somebody with a call.
00:27:08It might be contagious.
00:27:10Um, do you want me to get you something, Mom?
00:27:12Um, some tea or something?
00:27:13No, honey, I'm fine.
00:27:14Just finish studying.
00:27:15It was a nice day.
00:27:17Oh, no, sorry.
00:27:19Nice to meet you.
00:27:21See you.
00:27:27So, if you look here at the sign, that angle there, see?
00:27:35Brad finally got me to see the difference between sign and cosine.
00:27:39Good.
00:27:40Is there something going on between you two?
00:27:43Not really.
00:27:44I mean, I like him.
00:27:45What do you think?
00:27:46He seemed nice.
00:27:47Well-mannered.
00:27:48Good-looking.
00:27:49And he definitely likes you.
00:27:51You don't know that?
00:27:52Oh, Mickey, believe me.
00:27:54He likes you.
00:27:55Well, he'd better.
00:27:56We're gonna have to spend a lot of time together for me to ace math.
00:27:59Well, it seems like you made a new friend besides Tina.
00:28:02I guess I don't think of boys as friends.
00:28:05Your dad and I started out as friends before we realized we loved each other.
00:28:09There's something nice about that.
00:28:12Take some advice, honey.
00:28:13This boy-girl stuff, it's not a race.
00:28:16It's best to go slowly.
00:28:20Well, I can still remember my first kiss.
00:28:23These are wonderful years, Mickey, but they can be confusing, too.
00:28:28I'm doing okay.
00:28:29Good.
00:28:30Good, I'm glad.
00:28:31I know you are.
00:28:33But, you know, just in case, you can always talk to me.
00:28:46Come look at this.
00:28:52You see how your thighs are perfectly proportioned with your calves?
00:28:56You are like the perfect running machine.
00:28:59Sit down.
00:29:04They've spotted it.
00:29:06It's your inner thigh muscle, the adductor longus.
00:29:08That's what's throwing you off.
00:29:10Well, that's great, right?
00:29:11I can fix that.
00:29:12Here's the drill.
00:29:13Twice a day, morning and night.
00:29:15Deep massage and stretching to elongate that muscle.
00:29:19That's how Casey King made her breakthrough in the 800.
00:29:22Casey King ran 206 in high school.
00:29:24I'd never broken 210.
00:29:27Your mechanics are superb, but you're in decent shape, not great.
00:29:31You need to double your miles per week and focus on your speed training.
00:29:34I'm already doing 15 miles.
00:29:37230.
00:29:40Here, let me show you that.
00:29:46You see, muscle is viscous.
00:29:48It needs to be worked.
00:29:52I think I've got it.
00:29:58Suit yourself.
00:30:02Here are those exercises written out.
00:30:05Twice a day.
00:30:06No excuses.
00:30:12I'm telling you, no way.
00:30:14Not Coach Ansem.
00:30:15But I swear, his hand was off.
00:30:17Come on, Mickey.
00:30:17He was massaging your muscle.
00:30:19That's what coaches do.
00:30:20I hope you're right.
00:30:22Ansem's cool, Mickey.
00:30:23Thinks you're a good runner.
00:30:23And that's why he's paying attention to you.
00:30:26So I'm imagining things.
00:30:27Let's drop it.
00:30:30Oh, uh, about the concert this Friday.
00:30:32We'll pick you up at 8.30.
00:30:34What time do you think it'll end?
00:30:36I don't know.
00:30:37Why?
00:30:37Well, it'll be late, that's all.
00:30:40It's a Friday.
00:30:41Who cares?
00:30:42I know, I know.
00:30:46Carlisle!
00:30:48What's with you and the first split?
00:30:50Sorry, Coach.
00:30:52You know what?
00:30:52That'll get you.
00:30:53Do another five laps.
00:31:03Myers, leave that equipment out there.
00:31:05Mickey will bring it in.
00:31:06No, it's okay.
00:31:07I got it.
00:31:08Who made you coach?
00:31:10Mickey needs to build her upper body strength.
00:31:17Get the lead out!
00:31:21Hmm.
00:31:41I don't know.
00:31:45I don't know.
00:31:47Oh, this is going to be a good one.
00:31:48I don't know.
00:32:42I don't know.
00:32:48You scared me.
00:32:50I didn't know anybody was here.
00:32:52I thought someone left the water running.
00:32:55Sorry.
00:33:05You know, I don't think I've ever seen Mickey move so fast. Have you, Brett?
00:33:09Well, it's not every day you get to meet your island.
00:33:11Hey, see you guys there.
00:33:14But looks like I'm not the only one who's excited about seeing KC King.
00:33:17I met her last year when they brought her in to get a speech.
00:33:19You never told me you met KC King?
00:33:21Yeah, she's nice.
00:33:24Oh, uh, back tonight. Change of plans. Can you be ready at 8?
00:33:27It's tonight?
00:33:29The 3-11.
00:33:31The amphitheater is in. We have tickets. What's with you?
00:33:35I can't go. I'm sorry. It's just that...
00:33:38What?
00:33:39I made a promise. Have to be in bed by 10.30, no exceptions.
00:33:42Promise to?
00:33:43Myself. It's all about discipline.
00:33:46If you ask me, it's about obsession.
00:33:49I'm sorry, Tina.
00:33:50You know, forget it. Forget it. I'll get someone else to go.
00:33:57Hey, you want to get together and study later?
00:33:59I can't. I have to put in my six miles.
00:34:02You can overdo a good thing, you know.
00:34:04Coach is working me for strength and endurance.
00:34:07I hope it's worth it.
00:34:12And now I'd like to bring to the podium our very own coach, Kurt Ansem,
00:34:17to induct his former student, KC King, into the Waverly High Hall of Fame.
00:34:29Well, let's have a hand for Principal Ed Miles, the mayor, and the city council,
00:34:32for making this special day possible.
00:34:43When I first met KC King, she had no idea what she was capable of.
00:34:48Until she started believing in something bigger than herself.
00:34:52KC happens to be a runner, but it doesn't matter what area you choose.
00:34:57Running's just a metaphor for living.
00:34:59For going that extra mile when you think there's no way you can.
00:35:03And that's about believing you can do it.
00:35:06That's what KC King did.
00:35:07She chose to believe, and then she chose to achieve.
00:35:12She struggled against long odds and overcame many obstacles
00:35:16to become All-City Champion, State Champion, and, of course, National Champion.
00:35:23Welcome back.
00:35:24KC King.
00:35:41Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
00:35:43I want to tell you what an honor it is to be here,
00:35:46especially in front of the current track team.
00:35:48And for those of you who don't know,
00:35:50just by making the Waverly team,
00:35:52these runners are already in the 90th percentile
00:35:56of all the runners in the U.S.
00:35:58So, let's give them a hand.
00:36:00Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
00:36:53Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
00:36:55That way you key off for pace,
00:36:56and then you go like a bat out of hell for the inside track.
00:36:58Just like Coach said.
00:37:01Thanks.
00:37:02Sure.
00:37:04Mickey.
00:37:08Don't idolize anyone too much, okay?
00:37:11Including me.
00:37:13Okay.
00:37:15And don't be too eager.
00:37:17Too eager?
00:37:19Just take care of yourself, okay?
00:37:30I don't want to go to Seattle for my birthday.
00:37:32Why not?
00:37:34First off, it'll screw up the regimen.
00:37:36Oh, Mickey, one day off's not going to kill you.
00:37:39Yes, it will.
00:37:40And how's that?
00:37:42I just can't deal with all these outside influences.
00:37:46You know, you're starting to worry me.
00:37:48I think running's taken over your life.
00:37:51That's just like you.
00:37:53You tell me to give it all I've got,
00:37:54and when I finally have a chance to make it,
00:37:56you want me to pull back.
00:37:57What are you talking about?
00:37:59Sometimes I just don't think you understand
00:38:01what it means to be a runner.
00:38:03I don't understand running.
00:38:05I married running.
00:38:06I ate, slept, and breathed running
00:38:07with your father for almost 20 years.
00:38:09So don't tell me I don't understand running.
00:38:12I'm sorry.
00:38:13I didn't mean it the way it sounded.
00:38:17Can we forget it?
00:38:19Please.
00:38:22Okay.
00:38:37Anyone sit in there?
00:38:39Not that I know of.
00:38:42Look, I am.
00:38:43I'm sorry I got mad at you the other day.
00:38:45It's just, uh, why miss you?
00:38:50There's an empty seat.
00:38:55So?
00:38:58How's the trade work going?
00:38:59Better.
00:39:00You're a big help.
00:39:02What about the speed work?
00:39:04I'm still hovering at 2.10,
00:39:05but I'll break through it.
00:39:09Myers!
00:39:11You still owe me three laps from this morning.
00:39:13It's hard to do on a full stomach.
00:39:16Now?
00:39:17Did someone hear a whiny cat?
00:39:20Meow.
00:39:26See him?
00:39:27Yeah.
00:39:33Greasy French fries.
00:39:35Like putting molasses in a fuel-injected engine.
00:39:39Not on our program.
00:39:41Sorry.
00:39:43This afternoon, let's concentrate on endurance.
00:39:46Get yourself a baked potato.
00:39:49Go.
00:39:50All right.
00:40:23I've noticed your strides improving.
00:40:26I didn't know anyone was still here.
00:40:29You must be doing those exercises.
00:40:31Can you really see a difference?
00:40:33Yeah.
00:40:34I want your way to tell.
00:40:36Why don't you stand over here?
00:40:44You're a tough one.
00:40:46You didn't want to get with the program.
00:40:54What you see, it's all going in the right direction.
00:40:59No.
00:41:00No.
00:41:04I'm sorry to be so hard on you.
00:41:07No.
00:41:08You're supposed to do this.
00:41:10No.
00:41:11No.
00:41:12No.
00:41:13Don't.
00:41:14No, don't let you go?
00:41:15Is that what you're saying?
00:41:17No.
00:41:20No.
00:41:23Please.
00:41:24Stop.
00:41:26Don't worry.
00:41:28I won't hurt you.
00:41:29Please don't worry.
00:41:30Stop.
00:41:32Stop.
00:41:56Mickey?
00:41:57Mickey?
00:41:58Hey.
00:41:59Hey, Mickey, what's going on?
00:42:01Nothing's going on.
00:42:04I just don't feel well.
00:42:06Oh.
00:42:07What is it?
00:42:09Headache?
00:42:09Stomach?
00:42:10It's no big deal.
00:42:11What you just said.
00:42:12Just can't I just not feel well without getting the third degree?
00:42:15Stop being a nurse.
00:42:17I'm not being a nurse.
00:42:18I'm being a mother.
00:42:21I've got my period, okay?
00:42:26Okay.
00:42:27I'll keep dinner warm.
00:42:30I'll be there a little later.
00:42:31Okay.
00:42:40I don't know.
00:43:09I need you, buddy.
00:43:11Mickey!
00:43:15Mickey!
00:43:22Hey, Mickey!
00:43:25Where have you been all week?
00:43:27We haven't been to one practice.
00:43:31I'm late.
00:43:32Class has already started.
00:43:35Oh, no.
00:43:45Mom?
00:43:47Mom, are you home?
00:43:50Did the fuse blow again?
00:43:53Surprise!
00:43:54Happy birthday!
00:43:57I can't believe you're 17.
00:44:00Blow the candles.
00:44:01And the new rule is you can't wish for anything that has to do with running.
00:44:05Yeah.
00:44:05I wasn't going to.
00:44:10Yeah.
00:44:10All right.
00:44:12Yeah.
00:44:13Did you make a wish?
00:44:14Did you make a wish?
00:44:15I made a wish.
00:44:16I made a wish.
00:44:19What did we do?
00:44:19I don't know.
00:44:23Mickey.
00:44:25Mickey.
00:44:26Mickey, if the party was a bad idea, blame me.
00:44:29Don't be rude to your friends.
00:44:31It's a bad idea.
00:44:34Honey.
00:44:35Honey, what's wrong?
00:44:37Nothing's wrong.
00:44:39Just this party.
00:44:40No, I don't mean now.
00:44:42I mean the last few days.
00:44:43You've been acting so unlike you.
00:44:47I don't know what you're talking about.
00:44:50You stay in your room for hours.
00:44:52You're not working out mornings.
00:44:53I haven't seen you open a school.
00:44:54Will you stop it?
00:44:56Please.
00:44:57Okay, fine.
00:44:59Fine.
00:44:59We can talk about it later.
00:45:02And I'm sorry if I screwed up.
00:45:03I really am.
00:45:11I was worried about her before I got notice of her cutting mouth, but that was the last
00:45:14straw.
00:45:16It's like she's gone through a total personality change.
00:45:18Well, sometimes that's just the nature of being a teenager.
00:45:21No, this isn't hormones.
00:45:23Is there any sign of drugs?
00:45:25I have trouble getting her to take aspirin.
00:45:27What about boyfriends?
00:45:29You know, sometimes breakups at her age can be devastating.
00:45:32You know, there's this boy on the track team she's interested in, but it's not serious.
00:45:35I don't think it could be that.
00:45:38No, I just don't think she realizes what she's doing.
00:45:42You mean about cutting the math classes?
00:45:44Well, the cutting, not doing her schoolwork, even her running's gone haywire.
00:45:48It's like everything she's ever worked so hard for is going down the tubes.
00:45:53And to be honest, with her father going and me on a nursing salary, we can't afford a
00:45:57good college without a scholarship.
00:45:59Then she won't go.
00:46:01Or she'll earn her own way.
00:46:03Well, that's not right.
00:46:04I don't think you understand.
00:46:05She's got to...
00:46:05What I meant was, at some point, all you can do is make sure they understand the consequences.
00:46:12And after that, it's their choice.
00:46:18Why is she throwing it all away?
00:46:21I think that you need to ask her that.
00:46:29Mickey?
00:46:35All of a sudden, I'm getting letters from school about you cutting.
00:46:38What is this?
00:46:40I missed two classes.
00:46:42And math of all subjects.
00:46:44The one you're most worried about.
00:46:47I thought there was going to be a substitute.
00:46:49Mickey, I don't care if a chimpanzee is scheduled to teach.
00:46:52You never cut a class.
00:46:54Fine!
00:46:57One week you're getting tutored, the next week you're cutting.
00:47:04Honey, grades aren't everything.
00:47:06Running isn't everything.
00:47:08But your future is.
00:47:11Why are you throwing that away?
00:47:13I don't believe in the future.
00:47:16Don't ever say that again.
00:47:18Look, I don't know what's going on with you.
00:47:20But whatever it is, it's going to stop.
00:47:22Starting now.
00:47:24Starting right now.
00:47:43No point in timing, you.
00:47:45I don't know what you're doing out there.
00:47:47Give me three more laps.
00:47:50Why'd she stop trying?
00:47:53Coach is going to cut her from the team.
00:47:55She's not even picking up her knees.
00:47:57It's like she's letting herself fall forward.
00:47:59Hey, come on.
00:48:00Let's run with her.
00:48:12What's going on?
00:48:14You look lonely out here.
00:48:15Come on, Mickey.
00:48:16Set up some pace.
00:48:18Some other time.
00:48:23Come on.
00:48:25Say we didn't try.
00:48:40First, you don't come to practice for a week.
00:48:43Then you just walk off the field.
00:48:45I didn't feel well.
00:48:55You're in a slump.
00:48:58But sometimes a slump can be creative.
00:49:01Like a plateau.
00:49:04Progress isn't noticeable on the outside because it's taking place within.
00:49:07A slump.
00:49:08That's what it is.
00:49:09It takes trusting yourself.
00:49:12But she'll break out of it.
00:49:14Trust me.
00:49:15Now get back to your exercises.
00:49:17Oh.
00:49:19I almost forgot.
00:49:23A present.
00:49:24Heard you had a birthday last week.
00:49:28Go on.
00:49:29Open it.
00:49:48You are, you know.
00:49:50My number one.
00:50:16Nicky.
00:50:19Some bad news.
00:50:21The math grades came in and you didn't pass.
00:50:27I'm off the team.
00:50:29I'm sorry.
00:50:31I know what this means to you.
00:50:33I guess I screwed up.
00:50:35It doesn't have to be permanent.
00:50:38You know what you have to do.
00:50:41Yeah.
00:50:46Is everything all right at home?
00:50:49Why?
00:50:51Your mom came to see me.
00:50:53She's worried about you.
00:50:54She's just like that.
00:50:56Since we lost my dad, you know, she worries a lot.
00:50:59I'm okay.
00:51:00Remember about that after school tutoring program.
00:51:03Okay?
00:51:05Yeah.
00:51:06Maybe I can join that club now, too.
00:51:34I hear you're failing.
00:51:37math. I'm off the team. Mickey, math running, same rules apply. Figure out what you're good at,
00:51:47what you're bad at, focus on what you're bad at, work on it till it gets better.
00:51:55What are you doing? I'm not responsible for your academics, Mickey, but I'm counting on you to
00:52:01keep training on your own. You get your grades back up and get back out on the team. We need
00:52:05you.
00:52:06I want to go now. I miss you.
00:52:11Hey, coach, I just finished. Sorry. Don't touch me. Don't ever touch me again. Don't be so sensitive.
00:52:19I don't want anything from you. Mickey, don't go all hysterical on me. I mean it. I'll tell.
00:52:28Who the hell do you think you are? Where do you get off talking to me like that?
00:52:31After what you did. Is that what this is all about? I thought you were more mature than that.
00:52:35You're sick. No, you're the one who's sick. You screwed up your schoolwork, you're running badly,
00:52:41so now you're turning it all into something else. I'll take care of my own running. Not without me,
00:52:45you won't. You don't make state championships without me. Don't blow your career by letting
00:52:49your emotions get the best of you. Your state championship, your track scholarship, same thing.
00:52:55one word. All that goes away.
00:53:15Mickey, are you okay?
00:53:17Hey, don't do that. What? Like I'm some baby or something. Are you sick? That's all you think
00:53:29about. That's all you ever think can be wrong with somebody. Well, then tell me, Mickey. Tell me
00:53:33what's wrong? Nothing. I need a day off, that's all. And a week off and a month off. And my
00:53:42life off.
00:53:43Honey, please tell me what's wrong. Please tell me.
00:53:49I'm afraid.
00:53:50Of what?
00:53:53She might not believe me.
00:53:55Yes, I will. Of course, I will. Just tell me.
00:54:01I can't.
00:54:16Something horrible.
00:54:18Just say it.
00:54:23It's about Coach Ansem.
00:54:28What about Coach Ansem?
00:54:38He raped me.
00:54:41What?
00:54:43He raped me.
00:54:48Oh, my God.
00:54:54Oh, my God.
00:54:57Oh, no.
00:54:59Oh, no.
00:55:00Oh, no.
00:55:01Why didn't you tell me?
00:55:23You're nervous?
00:55:24A little.
00:55:26Well, just tell her the truth, honey.
00:55:28Tell her everything.
00:55:29Exactly the way it happened.
00:55:31Okay.
00:55:33You'll be all right.
00:55:46Mrs. Carlisle?
00:55:47Yes.
00:55:48Hi, I'm Christina Valdez.
00:55:49Hi, I'm Margaret Carlisle.
00:55:50Nice to meet you.
00:55:51Is your daughter with you?
00:55:53Yes, she is.
00:55:54Mickey?
00:55:55Mickey?
00:55:56Mickey?
00:55:58This is Ms. Valdez, logistic attorney's office.
00:56:00Nice to meet you.
00:56:01Nice to meet you.
00:56:01I am terribly sorry about all of this, Mickey.
00:56:04Unfortunately, it just seems to be happening more and more these days.
00:56:07I'm just up on the second floor.
00:56:08Do you want to come with me?
00:56:09Go.
00:56:11First off, I have to be honest with you both.
00:56:13The fact that there was a two-week delay before telling anybody is a big negative.
00:56:17What are you saying?
00:56:19This won't be an easy case to win.
00:56:21Therefore, I'm going to have to think very hard before filing charges.
00:56:23You mean you're not going to arrest him?
00:56:25Well, it's difficult to arrest somebody about probable cause, and we also have no physical
00:56:28evidence.
00:56:29Well, what do you mean?
00:56:30In sexual assault cases, we're looking for abrasions, semen, DNA.
00:56:35Mickey didn't report it right away, so any physical evidence there was probably got washed
00:56:39away.
00:56:40Are you telling me this bastard's going to get away with raping my daughter?
00:56:43No, I'm not.
00:56:44But I am saying it's not going to be easy.
00:56:46No, I just want to prepare everyone, especially Mickey, for what's up the road.
00:56:51Nothing could be worse than what already happened.
00:56:52And I understand that, believe me, I do.
00:56:55But Coach Anson has an extremely high profile, there will be a lot of publicity, and it could
00:56:59get very rough.
00:57:09Once again, Mickey, no detail is too small.
00:57:12So the more information you can give me, the better.
00:57:14Okay?
00:57:16Okay.
00:57:17Good.
00:57:18So let's get started.
00:57:21During the assault, did you tell Kurt Anson no, or use any words to that effect?
00:57:27I told him no.
00:57:29I begged him not to.
00:57:31And stop.
00:57:32I said stop.
00:57:33Did you fight back?
00:57:35Did you put up any kind of physical struggle?
00:57:38I just froze, and it kept happening.
00:57:42What about witnesses?
00:57:46I talked to Tina Beal once about him touching me.
00:57:49Touching you when?
00:57:51One time when he was massaging my calf.
00:57:53And then there's Brad, Brad Myers.
00:57:55He's a runner, too.
00:57:57He saw the coach try to kiss me.
00:58:01And where did that take place?
00:58:03In the weight room.
00:58:05He walked in on us.
00:58:08Good.
00:58:09It gives us something to go on.
00:58:13Now, before the incident, had you ever engaged in sexual intercourse?
00:58:23I know this is hard, but it's one of the first things they'll go for.
00:58:29Once.
00:58:31It was at a party about a year ago.
00:58:33My dad had just died.
00:58:35It was a mistake.
00:58:37Okay.
00:58:40You know what would really help us out, Mickey, is if you were to take a lie detector test.
00:58:46I know it sounds scary, but it's really not.
00:58:49And it would be a sure way for us to prove that you are, in fact, telling the truth.
00:58:58Okay.
00:59:01Did Kurt Ansem restrain you in any way?
00:59:04Yes.
00:59:05Did he ever hit you?
00:59:07No.
00:59:13Do you live at 2061 Orland Drive?
00:59:16Yes.
00:59:17She's cool under pressure.
00:59:19That's good if this goes to trial.
00:59:20Well, it's so hard to watch your child go through something like this.
00:59:28Consider the alternative.
00:59:29Letting Kurt Ansem get away with it.
00:59:32Hmm?
00:59:33Letting him do the same thing to somebody else's daughter.
00:59:35And who knows how many times he's gotten away with it before.
00:59:37I know that.
00:59:39What I don't know is the effect it's going to have on Mickey.
00:59:42I know some very good psychologists who can help.
00:59:45But what about all this?
00:59:47Lie detectors.
00:59:49Newspapers.
00:59:50Unfortunately, there's no way around it.
00:59:53But you see, Mickey has a better chance of healing from something like this by standing up for herself, seeking
00:59:58justice.
01:00:00Besides Mickey's stuff.
01:00:02She's a trained athlete, and all of that discipline is going to help her.
01:00:12I hope so.
01:00:23Kurt?
01:00:27We have a situation.
01:00:29The school board turned down my funding?
01:00:32Apparently, there's been a charge of sexual assault filed against you with Child Protective Services by one of your students,
01:00:40Mickey Carlisle.
01:00:42Mickey?
01:00:44I can't believe it.
01:00:45I've just come from an emergency school board meeting.
01:00:48It's been decided...
01:00:49Ed.
01:00:50You know me.
01:00:51That's impossible.
01:00:52I don't know why the girl would say such a thing.
01:00:54The point is, whatever actually took place...
01:00:58Nothing took place.
01:00:59Certain gears have been set in motion, and there's protocol to follow.
01:01:05Protocol?
01:01:06I'm afraid we have to place you on temporary suspension.
01:01:10Ed, this is nuts.
01:01:13It's out of my hands.
01:01:16Would I jeopardize my entire career?
01:01:18I suggest you get yourself a good lawyer, one that specializes in this sort of thing.
01:01:25Suspended for how long?
01:01:26Pending the outcome of the investigation.
01:01:33I can't believe some delusional teenager...
01:01:35Kurt, don't.
01:01:37Whatever you say now, I might be forced to repeat in court.
01:01:44Get yourself a lawyer.
01:01:54You couldn't hack the competition, so you had to ruin it for the rest of us?
01:01:57I could hack the competition.
01:01:59She made sure none of us made it to the state championship.
01:02:09Hi.
01:02:11Hi.
01:02:13Look, I told you some things, like Ansem touching me.
01:02:17The district attorney is going to ask you about them.
01:02:20Wait a second.
01:02:21Why are you dragging me into this?
01:02:23You've got to tell them.
01:02:26I don't have to do anything.
01:02:29Just leave me out of this, Mickey.
01:02:36What was that all about?
01:02:37Nothing.
01:02:38Let's just go back to work.
01:02:41Go back in a second.
01:02:50The police said you told them that I saw the coach molesting you?
01:02:53That's not what I said.
01:02:55Yeah, because it's not true.
01:02:56I saw you and him kissing, but that's all I saw.
01:03:01Then just say that.
01:03:03I won't lie.
01:03:04No one's asking you to lie, Brad.
01:03:06All they want is for you to tell what you saw.
01:03:08Yeah, well, he's the coach.
01:03:09Either way, I'm screwed.
01:03:20Oh, God, they interviewed Coach Anson.
01:03:23They did?
01:03:25If you ask me, Mickey Carlisle is just a kid who had a dream of being a track star.
01:03:31When she got cut from the team and knew there'd be no scholarship, she and her mom went for the
01:03:35next best thing, a million-dollar lawsuit.
01:03:38Where does he get this crap?
01:03:41He makes it up.
01:03:42Oh, I'm so sorry.
01:03:48Let's eat.
01:03:50I'm not hungry.
01:03:52Okay.
01:03:56You never said anything.
01:03:59You know, when it came out that I had sex, I mean, before.
01:04:08I just figured you'd come to me when you were ready.
01:04:11Do you believe me about the coach?
01:04:15Of course I do, Mickey.
01:04:17Why even ask me that?
01:04:19I don't know.
01:04:21I even thought maybe you'd think I was a bad person.
01:04:26Oh, Mickey.
01:04:28Get that out of your head.
01:04:31Oh, damn it.
01:04:33Damn it.
01:04:34Look what this case is doing to you.
01:04:39Bye.
01:04:40Sorry to keep you waiting.
01:04:42That's okay.
01:04:43Well, I have some good news and some bad news.
01:04:47Give us the bad news first.
01:04:51Even though Mickey passed the lie detector test with flying colors, my boss wants me to drop the case.
01:04:57What?
01:04:58He can't do that after all we've been through?
01:05:00We were hoping that once the story got leaked to the press, some of Ansem's other victims might have come
01:05:05forward, but that hasn't happened.
01:05:07And as you can well imagine, there was a lot of political pressure with this case.
01:05:14So what's the good news?
01:05:16He's given me 72 hours to come up with somebody else.
01:05:19But what if there is nobody else?
01:05:23Mary, can you send in the young man, please?
01:05:31Come in.
01:05:34Brad?
01:05:35What are you doing here?
01:05:37Hey, Mickey.
01:05:38I'm Miss Carlin.
01:05:40Brad gave an interview to the police earlier and something came up that I thought you should hear.
01:05:45What is it?
01:05:48I really can't remember who told me this.
01:05:52I was a freshman, and I just kind of put it out of my mind.
01:05:57Please, Brad, just tell us.
01:06:02Um, the rumor was that Coach Ansem did the same thing to another runner.
01:06:10Really?
01:06:11Who?
01:06:14Casey King.
01:06:15What?
01:06:16Casey King?
01:06:17Yeah, um, that's what I heard.
01:06:39Miss King, Coach Ansem raped my daughter.
01:06:43I'm sorry.
01:06:45I'm terribly sorry, but what does this have to do with me?
01:06:51We've been told that a similar incident happened between you and the coach.
01:06:55Then someone's lying to you.
01:06:57Well, if it's true, please.
01:07:00We really need you to come forward.
01:07:03I'm afraid you've come to the wrong person.
01:07:06That day in the parking lot, you were trying to warn me, weren't you?
01:07:10Look, I don't know what you're talking about.
01:07:12You told me not to idolize anybody, not to be too eager.
01:07:16Did he do the same thing to you?
01:07:20I'm going to have to ask you to leave now.
01:07:22If it happened to you and Mickey, don't you think it's happened to others, too?
01:07:26Why are you protecting him?
01:07:31Miss King, my daughter looks up to you.
01:07:34She has your posters, your calendars, all your articles.
01:07:37She talks about you all the time.
01:07:39She's admired you since...
01:07:41I'm sorry.
01:07:41I'd like you to leave now, okay?
01:07:47Come on, Mickey.
01:08:09Hey, Mickey.
01:08:11What's going on?
01:08:13Coach Hanson's been reinstated.
01:08:16It can't be.
01:08:18It was on TV and everything.
01:08:20How can they?
01:08:21It's something about union rules.
01:08:24I'm sorry.
01:08:35It can't be.
01:08:37It can't be.
01:08:42It's someaa.
01:08:43It can't be.
01:08:44It can't be.
01:08:44It can't be, it can't be.
01:08:45Go!
01:08:59I'm prepared to put this all behind us Mickey no hard feelings you get your grades back up get
01:09:05back in shape you'll be back on the team in no time
01:09:20okay we've got the state championships coming at us like a freight train so I don't know what
01:09:25you're doing sitting around here stuffing your faces let's get out there
01:09:39I didn't know who else to go to I'm just rushing to a staff meeting I'm sorry but I'm having
01:09:44second
01:09:44thoughts about urging Mickey to go on with the case why now well because of the kinds of questions
01:09:49she's trying to ask now she's turning it all in on herself a lot of guilt a lot of doubt
01:09:54look maybe it's just the way she's processing it and maybe it's good she's talking about it
01:09:59but you see I was the one who pushed her to report it what if that was a mistake I
01:10:03mean what if it's
01:10:03just too much for a teenage girl are you sure it's not you that it's too much for oh yeah
01:10:08I'm sure
01:10:10I want to get this guy and have you asked Mickey what she wants of course I have I've asked
01:10:15her
01:10:15and asked her and she says she wants to go ahead with it so trust your daughter how can she
01:10:23know at
01:10:23her age what's right for her I'm her mother don't I have to protect her above all else whether this
01:10:28man gets punished or not
01:10:38is it true what Mickey said of course not well why would she lie about you like that it's called
01:10:45pressure some athletes eat it up some crumble she crumbled so why'd you tell her she'll be back on the
01:10:53team because I mean it she's fast we need her no I think it's a mistake she hurt you she
01:11:03hurt the
01:11:04team let's concentrate on you now what do you mean we've got to get you faster you're my big hope
01:11:12in
01:11:12the four byes you've been working on your breakout like I told you I can't believe you remember my
01:11:18running problems when you've got all this other stuff on your mind hey I'm a coach that's what I do
01:11:28come here
01:11:31I need a hug
01:11:50well I never really saw anything outright but uh you told me to list anything suspicious
01:11:56mm-hmm and maybe we'll find something here that works how about number three often sees coach
01:12:02massaging a girl's leg he's a coach coaches do that and what about number five and some pats the girls
01:12:10on their rear ends that we can use number six works with girls after dark he always found some
01:12:18way to keep me after practice mmm everyone knows runners train hard that's not gonna do it for us
01:12:25okay number nine coach handsome drives the girls home never the guys explainable protection there's no
01:12:31jury that's gonna bat an eye at that what about number ten Julie Vaccaro hangs out in coach's office
01:12:39so well ever since Mickey left he's been concentrating on her a lot hmm Julie could be his next victim
01:12:45if she hasn't been already maybe she can tell us something that'll help let me talk to her are you
01:12:53sure that's such a good idea well from experience we find there's no pressure like peer pressure
01:12:57I meant for Mickey not the case mom I want to
01:13:10you stay the hell away from me I'm not your enemy Julie yes you are you're an enemy to the
01:13:16whole team
01:13:17I'm just trying to do what's right coach says the pressure got to you he feels sorry for you Mickey
01:13:24I do too
01:13:26he gave me one of those
01:13:32so
01:13:35Julie he's a great coach but he's a bad man what he did to me was wrong what you say
01:13:41he did he could do it to you
01:13:43maybe he already has look I don't know what you want but I want to run and you're not gonna
01:13:52keep me from
01:13:52doing that we've got to stop him he never did anything to you you only wish he did
01:14:02just be careful Julie because if I'm telling the truth and then that's a big if you could be next
01:14:20hello

01:18:04Let's go.
01:18:36What did you say to the DA?
01:18:39I didn't say anything.
01:18:44You know how it is, Casey.
01:18:46These girls come to me.
01:18:48They think they're in love.
01:18:50I'm an emotional guy. I'm passionate.
01:18:53I touch people.
01:18:55They get confused. They romanticize.
01:18:57Yeah, I know how it is.
01:18:59It's like us.
01:19:01Nothing happened between you and me that you didn't want.
01:19:04And you know that.
01:19:05No, I don't know that.
01:19:06Oh, really?
01:19:08So what do you know?
01:19:10That you raped me.
01:19:12Just like you raped Mickey Carlisle.
01:19:16In your dreams, Casey.
01:19:20I knew you'd get it all mixed up.
01:19:22If you don't leave me alone...
01:19:23What? You gonna start screaming?
01:19:25Cry wolf?
01:19:28You listen to me, Ms. King.
01:19:30If your coach gets discredited, so do you.
01:19:33I am not gonna lie.
01:19:35How many endorsements do you think you'll get
01:19:37once I tell them the truth about Casey King?
01:19:39No one is gonna believe you.
01:19:43They will when they read these.
01:19:49Those are copies of your love letters written to me.
01:19:53Very provocative reading, Casey.
01:19:56Very provocative.
01:19:59You bastard.
01:20:01Don't throw it all away, baby.
01:20:04This is a lose-lose situation for everybody.
01:20:15And picture your face at the finish line.
01:20:18I miss you so much,
01:20:19and I can't wait to be with you again on Saturday.
01:20:21I love you, Casey.
01:20:24This is not good.
01:20:27But those letters were written before he raped me.
01:20:30Mm-hmm.
01:20:30And here's the problem.
01:20:31They're gonna twist everything around
01:20:32and say that this is proof
01:20:33you were always obsessed with him.
01:20:35That's ridiculous.
01:20:36They'll say the relationship was always delusional,
01:20:39and now you're making everything up to get back at him.
01:20:41Get back at him for what?
01:20:43Well, for losing interest,
01:20:44for taking a new girlfriend.
01:20:46I don't believe this.
01:20:48There is no way I'm gonna testify now.
01:20:51What do you mean?
01:20:52It's all too much.
01:20:54I mean, it's just too messy.
01:20:55Casey, nobody ever said this was gonna be easy.
01:20:57No.
01:20:58I can't do it.
01:21:01You know I have the power to subpoena you
01:21:02before the grand jury.
01:21:04I'll deny everything.
01:21:05And commit perjury?
01:21:06I know what you're thinking,
01:21:08but it isn't like that.
01:21:09It isn't about my image and the endorsements.
01:21:12Then why don't you tell me what it is about?
01:21:14My mom and my entire family
01:21:17sacrificed so much to get me where I am,
01:21:19and I can't let them down.
01:21:22But you're letting Mickey Carlisle down,
01:21:24and you're letting Kurt Ansem win.
01:21:25I know.
01:21:26And I feel terrible.
01:21:28But I can't let this stuff get into the papers.
01:21:31I just can't.
01:21:36Okay, I'm sorry.
01:21:41Then there has to be another way you can help.
01:21:44Like what?
01:21:48You know Kurt Ansem as well as anybody, right?
01:21:52Yeah.
01:21:54So what really makes him tick?
01:21:56And how can we force him to make a mistake?
01:22:06We heard the charges were dropped.
01:22:08We just want to tell you how sorry we are.
01:22:10Yeah.
01:22:10Thanks.
01:22:11Mickey, I just want you to know,
01:22:13I believe you.
01:22:14I didn't at first, but I do now.
01:22:15It's okay.
01:22:16Really.
01:22:17Believe me.
01:22:18A lot of people admire you for it.
01:22:20And hope you're going to keep running, too.
01:22:21I don't know what I'm doing.
01:22:23Everything's happening so fast.
01:22:26Look, I'm sorry I didn't say something sooner.
01:22:29I feel like I let you down.
01:22:32Me, too.
01:22:35Thanks.
01:22:36I'm late for class.
01:22:36I really got to go.
01:22:38Hey, well, what about tutoring?
01:22:40You still need help with that?
01:22:41I'll call you later.
01:22:56Hi.
01:23:00Mickey.
01:23:03Yes, you won.
01:23:06There's no winning in something like this, Mickey.
01:23:09Why'd you come here?
01:23:11I don't know.
01:23:11I feel like my whole life has been ruined.
01:23:15Don't go blaming me.
01:23:16I'm not.
01:23:17I'm blaming myself.
01:23:18All I ever wanted to do was run.
01:23:21Well, you can still do that, Mickey.
01:23:23You've got the legs.
01:23:26You just need to straighten some things out up here.
01:23:28I know.
01:23:30Anyhow, I just wanted to say goodbye.
01:23:33It looks like I'm going to transfer to another school.
01:23:37Well, I think that's smart.
01:23:43You take care of yourself.
01:23:51Why did you have to force yourself on me?
01:23:54I love you.
01:23:55Mickey.
01:23:57I would have done it with you anyway.
01:23:58I would have done anything for you.
01:24:00Why did you force yourself on me?
01:24:03I didn't force myself.
01:24:04Yes, you did hurt.
01:24:06I told you it hurt.
01:24:07I thought that's what you wanted.
01:24:09I said, no, stop.
01:24:11Please, you're hurting me.
01:24:12But you wouldn't listen.
01:24:15Why?
01:24:15I thought you wanted me to.
01:24:17That's why I did it.
01:24:19Bingo.
01:24:19We got him.
01:24:20Code 4.
01:24:21Repeat code 4.
01:24:24I'll help you at the other school if you want.
01:24:28I can still make a champion out of you, Mickey.
01:24:31Kurt Asselm.
01:24:32What's this all about?
01:24:33You're under arrest for the rape of Mickey Carlin.
01:24:35You have the right to remain silent.
01:24:36You have the right to an attorney.
01:24:37This is outrageous.
01:24:38If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.
01:24:40Do you understand what I have just told you?
01:24:43You can't do this.
01:24:45This is insane.
01:24:51Just keep moving.
01:24:54It's all right.
01:24:56It's all over.
01:24:59You did a great job.
01:25:01Yeah.
01:25:02Thanks to Casey, I did.
01:25:06You were so right about him.
01:25:09About the crying.
01:25:10Yeah.
01:25:11Kurt can't resist rescuing a damsel in distress.
01:25:14That's how it starts with him.
01:25:16I was so scared he was going to find the wire.
01:25:18We were listening the whole time.
01:25:19There was no way we would ever let him touch you.
01:25:22Yeah, I would have been here with a baseball bat.
01:25:24Oh.
01:25:59Mom, you think Dad knows?
01:26:01Yeah, he knows.
01:26:04I'm sure he's just as proud of you as I am.
01:26:07You really think Coach Anson will go to jail?
01:26:09Christina says for at least five years.
01:26:11It was all because of you.
01:26:14Too bad they don't give out trophies for what you did, honey.
01:26:17You were so brave.
01:26:18I guess you inherited that from your dad.
01:26:22I got a lot from Dad.
01:26:24But I got my courage from you, Mom.
01:26:27Thanks for being there for me.
