A 19-year-old woman, allegedly murdered by her boyfriend after she became pregnant, was found in a skeletal condition in a forest area on the outskirts of Lucknow on Saturday, police officials said.

The victim, a resident of Sandana in Sitapur district, had left her home on May 25 to attend college in Kuchlai village. When she failed to return, her family lodged a kidnapping case at Sandana police station.

During the investigation, police questioned Vishal Pal, a resident of Saraiya village in Sitapur district. Investigators said the two were in a relationship and that the woman had become pregnant. The accused allegedly killed her following a dispute over marriage and the pregnancy.

Based on information allegedly provided by Pal, police reached a forest area near the ring road and recovered clothes believed to belong to the victim, along with a slipper, skull-like skeletal remains, bones and hair.

Police said the victim's family identified the recovered clothing and remains. Officials added that the body had completely decomposed after being dumped in the forest and was found in a skeletal state.

A forensic team collected evidence from the spot, and the remains have been sent for post-mortem examination. Police said DNA profiling and other forensic tests will be conducted if required.

Sitapur Additional Superintendent of Police Durgesh Singh said the accused was arrested and allegedly confessed during interrogation.

He further stated that while police were taking the accused to recover evidence on Saturday, he asked to attend nature's call and allegedly attempted to escape by snatching a pistol and opening fire at the police team.

Police retaliated, and the accused sustained a bullet injury to his leg. He was shifted to a hospital for treatment.

Officials said further investigation is underway, and several key pieces of evidence have been recovered at the accused's instance.
