00:00April 12th, Ankutuna, 1957, Chennai Maya Bazaar released.
00:13Now, 11th June, two months after.
00:20That's how it will feel for him, I know.
00:24Nothing has changed and cinema is with him.
00:30Till today.
00:31And that's very rare.
00:34And when I looked, I don't know what is the youngest in the group of the direction team.
00:4224.
00:44I met him before that.
00:47I was 21 when I did all that these boys had done with him.
00:58I was inadvertently, wantonly his assistant director.
01:05It so happened, I'm also the producer of the film.
01:10But the main idea was to work with them.
01:14Our first movie happened casually somewhere in Bombay.
01:19One day we must do a film.
01:21And we met after the award and the film fair award, Taj Hotello.
01:28Then he told me two stories.
01:32One of them was called, at that time was called Advaita.
01:38And we made that film.
01:40The other movie we kept talking we couldn't make nearly 45 years ago.
01:46And that is this movie.
01:51I was, I was 20 when we were talking about it.
01:57Now I see, I'm 71 and I see this movie.
02:05Some ideas are ageless.
02:10And that is why he's like that.
02:13He's full of ideas.
02:15And hence, age is just a number.
02:19Like take two, take three, take four.
02:23That's how he treats it.
02:27And we've come a good big circle, I think, between the two of us.
02:33And I'm happy to see that there are more people joining this great music called Singitham.
02:45For once and all in Kodambagam, there was always a confusion.
02:48How to pronounce his name.
02:51In Tamil Nadu, he used to get very upset.
02:54Because say, Mr. Sangeetam.
02:56No, it is Singitham, please.
02:59But after 40 years, you've cleared it.
03:01Now nobody can mispronounce.
03:04Nobody will call him Sangeetam.
03:06Now he's back to his original name, Singitham.
03:10But for me, that name itself is music.
03:15I feel happy working with him.
03:19And the way we spoke of Pushpag.
03:27Somewhere in Kerala, we were sitting.
03:30Adweta became Pushpag.
03:31And we had a holiday.
03:35And we always keep, we come from this hot studios.
03:41Sweating, you know, hot studios.
03:43We just shot in Ninerbat for Kalki.
03:46So the whole film, Pushpag, we were so proud.
03:49We shot it in air-conditioned.
03:51Because we shot in a five-star hotel.
03:53So we came out.
03:55The first thing we were proud of was total film, air-conditioned.
04:02Others praised us for doing the movie without dialogues.
04:07But we were happy working in AC.
04:11I'll brush my teeth.
04:13We'll come and rehearse.
04:14I'll go have a bath, comb my hair, and take one begins.
04:18That's how we worked in Pushpag.
04:21I still miss those days.
04:24And when I see the photograph of Dr. Rajkumar, he's giving clap.
04:29He has worked with people with heart.
04:33And they'll never let him go.
04:39And we probably enjoyed more.
04:41It was a very difficult film to shoot.
04:43Because it was sun, Bombay, no permission.
04:46But we enjoyed doing Mumbai Express.
04:50It is a good movie.
04:52We did a lot of experiments.
04:54It's also the first digital movie shot on 720p.
05:02It is not before these cameras.
05:05All of these.
05:06And we enjoyed that.
05:08Now he's going one step forward.
05:10He's always ahead of Gen Z.
05:16And I'm happy to celebrate a young man like Mr. Singitham Srinasrakar.
05:26Age is a nuisance.
05:28But mind can surpass it.
05:31And he's a great example.
05:35And I'm learning.
05:37In that, I want to be his assistant director.
05:41To maintain that state of mind.
05:45And I thank Nagi Garu, Swapna Garu, Bhaijanti Movies, all of them, for understanding.
05:52Cinema is all about passion.
05:57And then only it becomes a business.
06:01So we are doing it the other way around.
06:04We now check how much it will make.
06:07100 crores?
06:08200 crores?
06:09300 crores?
06:10No.
06:11The day we made Pushpak for 15 lakhs, we felt like we made 150 crores.
06:20But that's not an exaggeration.
06:23It must have already collected more than 200 crores.
06:27That's the truth of the industry.
06:29We don't realize.
06:30We don't even fully monetize our films.
06:35We are learning now.
06:37But he has traveled from that time of passion.
06:41And his passion has not dwindled at all.
06:44And I don't see why the industry should lose its passion.
06:49Learn it from these people.
06:52And some of the greatest ideas.
06:54Nobody can write out a pro note and say this film is a success.
06:59Super hit film.
07:00Success film.
07:02Nobody can say this will surely fail.
07:05But we can say we will be happy at the end of this film.
07:11If you are not, we won't release it.
07:16How simple is that?
07:18That happened in Aburu Saudargil.
07:20First 20 days of shooting, we are all happy.
07:24All film making starts with euphoria.
07:27And then it ends with blaming.
07:31Or sharing an award.
07:34Deserving, undeserving, everybody will get an award.
07:37But when it comes to a failure, you start blaming.
07:40That award we were willing to take, both of us.
07:46Everybody will leave us.
07:49And we will hold on to that award.
07:51One such award is Pushbuck.
07:55One such award is Mumbai Express.
07:58If you don't have success, ask us.
08:02So that is the spirit with which we work.
08:06And that spirit is there in the movie.
08:08You've already completed your success function.
08:14This is it.
08:17That's the only way to make films.
08:20And nobody can say which is a good film.
08:25So every film, we are doing a big film.
08:29How do you know it's a big film?
08:32Your cast does not decide it as a big film.
08:35We have a great idea.
08:38That's where a film begins.
08:40And this has that great idea.
08:42And that's how we tried to.
08:46Aburu Saudargil, first 20 days, we scrapped.
08:50That would have been a failure film.
08:52We stopped it from becoming a failure.
08:55And the decision was made by two of us.
08:57The 20 days, we had to answer for the money spent on it.
09:02But we were not worried.
09:03Because we know that is wrong.
09:05And we wanted to do something right.
09:07And we did it.
09:10And the tension of doing that film, only we know.
09:13Because only the two of us were responsible.
09:16Even he didn't know, after three shots,
09:19how I'm going to continue being a dwarf.
09:22It came to us.
09:25After a lot of hair loss.
09:28We arrived on the right things at the right moment.
09:33Because one trick...
09:34Appu is not a one trick dog.
09:37He has many tricks.
09:38But where to place which trick?
09:42Everyone can find out how we did the film.
09:44But they will not be able to say where we did what gag.
09:49That's all there is to it.
09:51And we were so tense.
09:53And it's truly a full circle.
09:54Because we used to shoot at Wiener Studio.
09:58By the time lab results come to us,
10:01it will be at least 45 minutes.
10:05However fast, motorcycle, whichever way you go.
10:08And then we got so...
10:11Because we had to wait for the lab to send us
10:13whether the masking worked or not.
10:16Then we had our own little box where we developed,
10:19looked at the film.
10:21Then we went to the next shot.
10:23By the end of the movie, the tension was too much.
10:26We started shooting on top of this roof.
10:29The climax chase.
10:32Because the lab is there.
10:34We can look down and say,
10:36is it okay?
10:37Okay, next shot.
10:41That's how we did it.
10:42And now this time we are inside the building.
10:45And the picture is ready.
10:48We've been at the back end.
10:50Now we are at the front end.
10:51That's all.
10:52It doesn't matter which company produced the film.
10:56It is like I feel like I have produced it.
11:00And at least Mr. Nagi knows,
11:03I feel like a co-producer.
11:06You know it.
11:08So that's why I am here.
11:11I always respected him.
11:13I don't need an occasion to respect him.
11:15Or pay my respects.
11:16This is yet another film that Raj Kamal wishes it has produced.
11:26So it doesn't matter.
11:28This is not a race.
11:29We are running together.
11:32Not to get ahead of each other.
11:34So I am very happy that you invited me.
11:38You should have told me at least three, four months back
11:41I would have been standing on the stage along with those boys.
11:46I missed that opportunity.
11:49I missed that opportunity.
11:51But I trust this gentleman so much,
11:55I might get that opportunity again.
12:00So thank you very much.
12:03And sing along with Singitham.
12:08Thank you so much, sir.
12:11Requesting you to please be seated.
12:14You won't believe.
12:15What a beautiful speech it was, sir.
12:18I want to speak to you in the industry.
12:19I want to speak to you in the industry.
12:22Because what you mentioned about the business and the...
12:25...
