00:00You co-authored piece,Taiwan is the key to AI dominance through WA extension here in
00:05Taiwan
00:05So why is Taiwan more than a bargain trip?
00:08And has Washington truly grasped that losing Taiwan means losing the AI economy?
00:15I think that there's some strong understanding in Washington
00:20about Taiwan's enormous strategic significance of course
00:24And that Taiwan's strategic significance has many factors
00:30And they include Taiwan's geographic position
00:35The defense commitments that the United States has long had to Taiwan
00:42Taiwan's role as a democracy
00:47And these are long-standing reasons
00:49But there's also an economic centrality that Taiwan has
00:53Putting it at the absolute center of the world
00:56And the real center of America's own vision
01:00For its own future economic growth
01:02Because Taiwan is completely unsubstitutable
01:07As the center of global AI manufacturing
01:10Sometimes ideas like the Taiwan centrality
01:17To U.S. Semiconductor and AI manufacturing
01:22Might go away in 18 months
01:24Or even in a few years
01:28But that seems to be a major misunderstanding
01:33Of just how central Taiwan is
01:35And how Taiwan's centrality is because of an enormously dense
01:40And complex ecosystem here
01:43Not just of leading-edge logic manufacturing
01:47But of packaging and bonding
01:51And enormous range of manufacturing activities
01:57That reflect a long history here
02:01And the geography here
02:03And the particular economic actors
02:05And workforce and government policies here
02:08And that the United States and its allies
02:12Will need many many years
02:15Before having anything like
02:18A ability to no longer be dependent
02:24On this particular ecosystem here in Taiwan
02:27If unfortunately China takes over Taiwan
02:32Especially Taiwan's semiconductor production offline
02:35How severe would the global impact be
02:38Especially the U.S.
02:39In the United States for example
02:42The Trump administration has talked about
02:45The importance of American AI leadership
02:48And AI dominance
02:51That has been a very important
02:53Strategic principle of U.S. policy
02:57There's no question that we want the United States
03:00And its friends
03:02To lead the world in AI
03:05Because the stakes of AI leadership
03:08Are
03:09Not just economic and commercial
03:11They're fundamentally strategic
03:13AI leadership could be the thing
03:15That determines
03:16Power and influence in the world
03:18And there's a major question
03:20About whether
03:21The AI era
03:23Of not just personalized medicine
03:26But personalized warfare
03:28And the potential for terrible personalized tyranny
03:33Will that be a world
03:34That is more influenced by democratic values
03:36Or by totalitarian values
03:38The stakes are enormous
03:41And Chinese control of Taiwan
03:45And of the AI manufacturing ecosystem here
03:49Could be decisive in that context
03:52In that contest rather
03:54And it could be
03:55As we wrote in the op-ed
03:58The decisive factor
03:59In whether the United States
04:00And its friends
04:01Have tech hegemony in the future
04:03Or China and the Chinese Communist Party do
04:06And вкусed
04:07You said we could do
04:07It's the physicalots
04:07The civil fandom
04:09will have that
04:09It's the main cot
04:10You said we'll be
