00:00I'm Andrew McIntyre, I'm a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Amsterdam,
00:05specifically at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation.
00:09And primarily my research investigates the socio-political impacts of AI-generated media,
00:17including deepfakes, and this is the majority of the work that I do with Solaris as well.
00:22We are seeing deepfakes, that's audiovisual content that can replicate a person
00:29and make it seem like they're saying something they would never say.
00:34So the production of deepfakes is becoming much more sophisticated,
00:38it's becoming easier as well, so it's much more widely available, this technology.
00:42So the issue we're seeing with that is that we may see disinformation much more sophisticated
00:51on a much higher scale or larger scale, and this may interfere with electoral processes
00:57but also democracy more generally.
01:00So it might exacerbate current polarisation within politics,
01:05and it might help to foster in what we're already seeing,
01:09which is this climate of uncertainty with media more generally.
01:13So people may feel that because there is such sophisticated AI-generated media out there,
01:19they may start to think that all media is fake or cannot be trusted.
01:24So you have this much broader issue beyond electoral interference
01:29in that people may not feel that they're able to even participate within democracy.
01:34They're not able to vote, they're not able to make up political opinions about things,
01:39and therefore they become disengaged, cynical, or much more polarised than what we're seeing right now.
01:45Yeah, no, no, it's not all doom and gloom.
01:48I mean, these are the immediate risks, but people are taking action to address them.
01:53We have regulation governing these AI technologies,
01:57but also increasing regulation and increasing policy to combat the spread of disinformation
02:03and other harmful content online.
02:05So hopefully these actions will have a good effect on this issue.
