Former IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi has made sensational claims about the early years of the Indian Premier League, alleging that fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim's network targeted him after he refused to allow match-fixing in the tournament.

In a candid interview with ANI, Modi claimed he survived three assassination attempts allegedly linked to Dawood Ibrahim and turned down offers worth hundreds of millions of dollars to ignore attempts to manipulate IPL matches.

Modi also spoke about his exit from Indian cricket administration, the challenges he faced while running the IPL, and why he believes criminal syndicates wanted him removed.

Watch this explosive interview as Lalit Modi shares his side of one of cricket's most controversial chapters.

00:00So, when you left India, you said you faced a threat from Dao Dibrahim.
00:06Which was very true.
00:07Who told you about Dao Dibrahim was threatening you?
00:09Who said this?
00:10He took three hits at me.
00:11How do you know it was him?
00:13Because it's very clear by the Mumbai police, Rakesh Bariya, and very clearly, it was all
00:19over the media.
00:20He's given…
00:21Dao himself said it.
00:22Have you seen Chhota Shaqeel's interview?
00:24No.
00:25Please go to Chhota Shaqeel, he gave a live interview when he was caught.
00:32See he said he wanted to kill Lalit Modi.
00:34And he missed three times.
00:35Why did they want to kill you?
00:37Because I didn't look the other way when they wanted to fix matches.
00:40I threw people out.
00:41I did not allow fixing to take place.
00:43They offered me hundreds of millions of dollars to look the other way.
00:46They bet the main problem started, I'll tell you well.
00:50Dao Dibrahim is a known bookmaker.
00:53He controlled the cricket book.
00:56In those days, it was used to be two billion dollars of underground betting.
01:00Today is four billion dollars of underground betting a game.
01:03It's huge.
01:04It's huge.
01:05It's unimaginably huge.
01:07Every ball there's odds change.
01:09It's a satta bazaar, okay?
01:12Nobody fixes games anymore.
01:15You fix overs.
01:17You fix the ball.
01:18Even now?
01:19I don't know now.
01:20But that's what they do in pajama cricket and all the other crickets.
01:22You fix games, okay?
01:24We don't know what's fixing.
01:25It's become so sophisticated.
01:26Somebody takes out a handkerchief, somebody rubs something the other way, and it's a sign.
01:30Okay?
01:31We watch for these signs.
01:32We look for these signs.
01:33Okay?
01:34What happened?
01:34And if you look at the first three years when I ran the IPL, there was no fixing.
01:40I took a lot of people to task and I threw a lot of people out of the stadium.
02:12I banned a lot of people to come in.
02:14It was chatter that came from Bombay police.
02:15Bombay police put me on Z security.
02:17I didn't ask for it.
02:19All of a sudden, I have Z security.
02:20There was a shootout outside my house in Bombay.
02:23There was a hit for me in Johannesburg and I'm in Cape Town, which was picked up by the
02:28South African government.
02:29There was a hit on me in Montenegro, which was picked up at the Croatian border.
02:32Okay?
02:33My son was kidnapped in London on Sloan Street, right there, by a guy called Mughal Aazam,
02:42Baba Aazam.
02:43He lives on Park Street.
02:46MI5 is trading them.
02:48This is not fiction.
02:50This is real.
02:51And you tie all of them to the Dao Debraham camp.
02:53It is.
02:53We found it.
02:54It is them.
02:55I then go.
02:56They have not told this story to anybody.
02:59I'm telling first time.
03:00Now you pushed me to it.
03:02I'm called at 3.30 in the morning.
03:06I forget that guy's name.
03:08He'll come to me in a minute.
03:10A cop?
03:10No, no, no.
03:11A tout.
03:13You see them around all the IPL matches.
03:17I have to get his name.
03:19He calls me.
03:20He's a friend of ours.
03:20He's been seen around all these games.
03:23He's around politicians.
03:25He's London-based guy.
03:29And when I say a Tao to me, he's a fixer dealer type of guy.
03:34And he's there.
03:34I see him around.
03:35He says, you have to come and meet this guy Baba.
03:39I said, 3 o'clock in the morning.
03:41No, you have to come now.
03:43So I said, maybe something important.
03:44I go to Baba's house.
03:48Penthouse.
03:48Back-to-back painting of Hussein.
03:51Rolling chalas.
03:54He said,
03:58You have to come from India.
04:01We need an IPL team.
04:03I said, I don't have to go to India.
04:05So I have to go to India.
04:05So I have to go to the IPL team.
04:06Who do you need to go to India?
04:06Let's go and see.
04:07Who do you have to go to India?
04:10He said, no.
04:12And all of a sudden,
04:13I said, we don't go to India.
04:14We have to go to Dawood.
04:16He said,
04:17I will fix it.
04:18It was all orchestrated by them.
04:20He goes on his terrace.
04:21Takes out his satellite phone.
04:22And calls Dawood on the phone.
04:24I pissed at my pants.
04:25I tell you this.
04:26Without doubt.
04:28Okay.
04:29Right there and then.
04:31And I had MI5 downstairs.
04:33Security.
04:35Baba says,
04:36Dawood bhai, Lalit bhai,
04:38I said, I'm not talking.
04:41I said, I'm not talking.
04:42I said, I'm not talking.
04:44And he says,
04:45Simply.
04:52Put down the phone.
04:54I go home.
04:58I tell my wife, you know.
05:00This incident happened.
05:01And I think our problem is resolved.
05:06They just expanded.
05:08Do you remember which year this was?
05:122012.
05:14Do you remember where?
05:16Did he call Pakistan?
05:18Did he call Dubai?
05:19I don't know where.
05:20I don't know.
05:20You don't know where Dawood was?
05:21I didn't speak to him.
05:23He was on a satellite phone.
05:24On a satellite phone.
05:25On the terrace.
05:26Did you tell the cops here?
05:27Yes.
05:27Everybody said my recorded statement.
05:29Okay.
05:30Number one.
05:31It's a recorded statement of mine.
05:33Okay.
05:33Number one.
05:34Number two.
05:35So.
05:35Now.
05:36Look at the drama.
05:40The drama begins.
05:42This Baba.
05:43Is now seen everywhere.
05:45He's a man of the world.
05:47Huh?
05:49I'm having dinner.
05:50One day with Shokhat Aziz.
05:52Prime Minister.
05:53Of Pakistan.
05:54Pakistan.
05:55He had just.
05:56Not.
05:56He had left.
05:57He had left Pakistan.
05:59And we were having dinner.
06:00There was an India-Pakistan match taking place.
06:02At the World Series.
06:03In.
06:04In Birmingham.
06:06He said like.
06:07I'd like to go.
06:08I said.
06:08Chalo.
06:09You will.
06:10He said.
06:10I have a Pakistan flag.
06:11I have India flag.
06:12So I had the India flag on my shoulder.
06:15And this guy.
06:15The former Prime Minister of Pakistan.
06:17Good friend of mine.
06:18Okay.
06:19We bonded because.
06:20We.
06:20I knew him.
06:21Before he was Prime Minister.
06:22He was Citibank.
06:23Yeah.
06:24And I would meet him at Prameshaya.
06:25Goddraji's house.
06:26Prameshaya was a very dear friend of mine.
06:28Bombing.
06:28Okay.
06:28That's how we met.
06:29And you know.
06:30I've developed relationship.
06:31Nothing else.
06:32He liked cricket.
06:32I like cricket.
06:33It was good.
06:34Baba happened to be there.
06:36Sitting.
06:37At a table in Chinatang.
06:38I remember.
06:39At the bar.
06:40And I asked.
06:41Shokhat Bhai.
06:42I said.
06:42I don't know.
06:42I said.
06:43I don't know.
06:44I said.
06:45You could confirm with him.
06:46He said.
06:48That was all.
06:49And then.
06:51They start calling me up.
06:52On a weekly basis.
06:54Who?
06:55The Baba.
06:56Okay.
06:56And said.
06:58Dosti is not about.
07:02Forgot.
07:03Forgiven.
07:04Come.
07:04We need something back in return.
07:07Hmm.
07:07So I said.
07:07What happened?
07:07That's when I learned the story.
07:09That the hits were being put on me.
07:11Is because.
07:12I moved it to South Africa.
07:14America.
07:15So now you have to make good.
07:17Now you look at Shota Shaqeel's interview.
07:21Wait.
07:21No, no.
07:22You hear.
07:22If you Google now.
07:23And you put on your.
07:24On your iPad.
07:25You are saying that.
07:26They didn't.
07:27That.
07:27There were two people who didn't want it to be moved to South Africa.
07:31According to you.
07:32In this interview.
07:33You have said.
07:34One was Mr. Chidambaram didn't want you to move there.
07:36Because of elections.
07:37And the second one.
07:38You are saying.
07:39Is that.
07:40He plays against anything.
07:41And that the bookies.
07:42Bookies are betting.
07:43Or whether he happens.
07:44Who didn't want you to move to South Africa.
07:45No, no.
07:45Bookies are taking bets.
07:48There's a whole drama going on in media.
07:50Okay.
07:51IPL.
07:51South Africa.
07:52England.
07:53There were all these bets going on.
07:55So there were two things that Dao Debraham wanted from you.
07:57One.
07:58He wanted a team.
07:59And two.
07:59He wanted you to stop the betting thing.
08:02Which you were stopping.
08:03No.
08:03Two reasons.
08:03I wasn't stopping anybody.
08:05No, no.
08:06I think there's again miscommunication.
08:07Yeah.
08:07Explain to me.
08:08It's getting confusing.
08:09It is getting confusing.
08:10So let me explain to you.
08:11So it's better.
08:15They accused me.
08:17Of moving IPL to South Africa.
08:20When they thought.
08:21It's not going to move.
08:22Because they ate the bets up.
08:24So they lost a lot of money.
08:25Apparently.
08:26Okay.
08:27So.
08:28They wanted.
08:29Me.
08:30To make good that money.
08:31I didn't ask you to take the bet.
08:33I don't have to do it.
08:34You said that this prime minister will become the chief minister.
08:39That is your business.
08:40I am not in the book making.
08:41So you are no longer in the head list.
08:42Why?
08:43One minute.
08:43I will come to that.
08:44You will see his own statement.
08:47You will see his own statement.
08:48And live statement.
08:50He said we have resolved issues with Lalit Modi.
08:52What resolved issues?
08:53Did you?
08:53I didn't.
08:54I just said.
08:57I will retire from cricket.
08:59I gave my word.
09:00I will retire.
09:01Is it because of Daud Ibrahim that you retired from cricket?
09:04It's one of the biggest reasons.
09:06One of the biggest reasons.
09:08Seriously?
09:09I have never said this before.
09:10One of the biggest reasons.
09:11Why would I subject myself.
09:13To media pressure.
09:14Government pressure.
09:16And then.
09:17Life threatening.
09:17Life threatening pressure.
09:19So.
09:20I am saying it for the first time.
09:21You have seen Durandhar?
09:22I have not seen it.
09:23But I want to see it.
09:24Because Ranveer is a good friend of mine.
09:25And he wants to play me in a movie.
09:26And I have to see it.
09:27Because I have just been so busy.
09:29No.
09:29I am talking about Daud Ibrahim.
09:31No.
09:31I haven't seen it.
09:31I haven't seen the movie.
09:32He is there in part 2.
09:33Okay.
09:34In the movie.
09:35They show him in part 2.
09:37Which is why I am asking you.
09:38But I thought movies are fictional.
09:39Or this is a real movie.
09:40Well.
09:41It is based on real life events.
09:43You know how all Bollywood movies are.
09:44They say it is based on real life events.
09:46I don't see Bollywood movies.
09:47To tell you the truth.
09:48I have seen 3 movies.
09:49The reason I am asking you is about Daud Ibrahim.
09:52Because he is a character in that.
09:53Who is paying a price for the Bombay bomb blast.
09:56Which happened.
09:57And the attack.
09:57Do you know about Bombay bomb blast now?
09:59I will give you another story.
10:01And this will blow you off.
10:02Completely.
10:03The Bombay bomb blast.
10:05Is on the 26th of November.
10:072008.
10:09At the Taj Hotel.
10:11In Oberoi Hotel.
10:12And at the.
10:14I am at the Taj Hotel.
10:16At 5 to 7.
10:17In the morning.
10:19With 200 people.
10:20At the souk restaurant.
10:22Having a security briefing.
10:24And I step out.
10:26Exactly at 7 o'clock.
10:27Or something around then.
10:29To go to have drinks.
10:30On the boat of Vijay Madhya.
10:32The cross on the harbour.
10:34What is happening on the 27th?
10:36The 100% of the hotel is booked by me.
10:39Champion League is beginning.
10:41The opening ceremony is on the 27th of November 2008.
10:44And.
10:46And.
10:46Eight.
10:47I have all the teams landing that night.
10:50I have booked the whole Taj Hotel.
10:53I have booked the whole Oberoi Hotel.
10:55The next day.
10:57That night.
11:00I have 200 security personnel.
11:02At the souk restaurant.
11:04Doing a briefing.
11:05I walk out.
11:06I have just reached the gateway of India.
11:08And the gunshots begin.
11:12And.
11:14All I can say today.
11:15Is.
11:15I am so thankful.
11:17And grateful.
11:18That it happened on 26th.
11:20And not 27th.
11:22From my perspective.
11:23If it was 27th.
11:24It would be a complete different cable.
11:39If it was 27th.
11:41It would be a complete different cable.
