00:36Bienvenidos a Belgrade.
01:15So I would say Knez Mihajlo Brenović,
01:17the man that is on the horse on the Republic Square
01:20was one of the most important historical figures for Serbia
01:23because he was in charge of liberation
01:25at the end of the Turkish Ottoman period.
01:27In order to reach Belgrade fortress,
01:30we walk along some of the key bustling streets of Belgrade,
01:33with one important street being notable
01:35due to the fact that its name has not changed since 1870.
01:40So some streets in Belgrade has changed the name six, seven times,
01:43but this one never.
01:44As we approach the fortress,
01:46you truly appreciate the beauty of the exterior,
01:49with the building reflecting the name of the city itself.
01:53Beo means white and grad means city,
01:55and the name Beograd refers to the white colour of the fortress,
01:59which dominantly stand on the top of the hill
02:02once we are on the riverside and we look at the fortress.
02:05Some outer parts of the fortress are dominated by brown-red bricks,
02:10showcasing construction which occurred during the late 18th century
02:14when the city was under Austro-Hungarian rule.
02:17However, further into the fortress you can notice the rich history
02:22which dates back to the Celtic and Roman era.
02:26And even though the city has succumbed to many battles over time,
02:29the fortress has been rebuilt throughout these periods.
02:33Reflecting this very complex history,
02:36a statue was erected in the early 19th century
02:39to demonstrate the resilience of the people.
02:42Because it's a symbol of victory, power, pride and strength,
02:45but it's also naked and it's a symbol of a new life,
02:48new birth, new beginning.
02:49Wandering around the fortress is truly a history lesson through the ages,
02:54with further remnants of the past being showcased at every turn,
02:59even under the fortress itself.
03:02You definitely could spend a lot of time exploring,
03:05but I have one more stop with Jelko, the Church of St. Sava.
03:10First of all, St. Sava was the founder of Christian Orthodox Church,
03:14Serbian Christian Orthodox Church, but unfortunately his holy relics
03:18were burned by the Turks Ottomans in 1594.
03:22Construction of the church began in 1935.
03:26However, it was stopped due to World War II,
03:29and only then resumed in the 1980s.
03:32Inside the church, you notice its huge dome and golden mosaics,
03:37which span as far as the eye can see.
03:41Just a short drive out of the city sits Avila Mountain,
03:45a small but historically important mountain south of Belgrade.
03:50Joining me for a hike today is Milan,
03:53an active adventurer who knows the best route to the viewpoint.
03:57You like it?
03:58I absolutely love it. Yeah, I love being surrounded by trees.
04:01Yeah, clear nature close to the Belgrade. Amazing.
04:04Really amazing.
04:04I think that's definitely what sets this apart, right?
04:07You're not far at all from the city, but you feel a million miles away.
04:11The journey up the mountain is very picturesque,
04:14and we decide to stop at a freshwater spring
04:17to enjoy some local water.
04:20Mmm, some good water.
04:23And cold. Very cold.
04:25We continue with our hike,
04:26speaking about the importance of the mountain
04:28and also the history which surrounds the city.
04:31There's so many different layers to the history,
04:35different people coming in, that it's really complex.
04:39Yeah, we talk about that because the Belgrade
04:40is on the crossroad of Two River,
04:43a good point to control trading west of the east,
04:46and everybody wants to stay on the Belgrade
04:49or conquer the Belgrade to control trading.
04:52As we reach the top of the mountain,
04:54you are greeted by spectacular views from every angle.
04:59You can see Avala Tower.
05:02This is our symbol of Belgrade.
05:05There exist a couple more,
05:06but we like to say that that tower is a symbol.
05:09Unfortunately, in 1999, the tower was destroyed
05:13but was reconstructed to its former glory in 2010
05:17and stands as another important reminder of Belgrade's history.
05:25Back in the city and it's time to check out
05:27one of the most famous areas in Belgrade.
05:30When you're in Belgrade, everyone will mention to you Skedalia
05:34and it's clear to see why.
05:37I'm really excited to try some Serbian food.
05:40To embrace the flavours of Serbia,
05:42I'm heading to a well-known restaurant
05:44frequented by artists, politicians and royalty.
05:48Three shashira, or three hats in English,
05:52has been serving traditional food for over 162 years,
05:57closing for only six days over World War II.
06:00They allow me into their kitchen
06:02to prepare two very special dishes.
06:05Today we prepare cevapi,
06:08Serbian traditional meat.
06:11Cevapi are small finger-sized rolls of minced beef.
06:14They are very simple to make
06:16and are placed on a grill for around 10 minutes.
06:19There we go!
06:20I'm a natural!
06:23Once the time has passed,
06:25it is time to try some of my creations.
06:28Everything tastes delicious,
06:30very fresh and full of flavour.
06:33It's easy to see why this restaurant
06:35is so busy every single day.
06:39For my stay in Belgrade,
06:41I'm discovering an iconic hotel
06:43which has been beautifully restored to its former glory.
06:47The hotel's manager, Alistair,
06:50explains the significance of this incredible building.
06:53It opened in 1912
06:54and became very quickly
06:56the leading property in the Western Balkans.
07:00And now, after a long restoration work
07:02of nearly seven years,
07:04it's reopened in February as the Bristol Belgrade
07:06and brought back to its original shine.
07:09There's been excitement, there's been drama,
07:11there's been romance.
07:12We've been home to celebrities
07:14like Garry Kasparov,
07:16the chess grandmaster.
07:18We've been home to Tito,
07:21to the British royal family.
07:22The hotel is a real reminder
07:25of the stunning architecture
07:27which graced the city over the years.
07:29And even with the modern twists
07:32like the wellness facilities and spa,
07:35elegance and classic features
07:37are observed throughout.
07:39From relaxing in the library
07:40to admiring the royal suite,
07:42it is clear to see why this building
07:44has played a key role in Belgrade's history.
07:49When history and luxury come together,
07:51it truly is something to behold.
07:54It takes you back in time.
07:55You can imagine how it was
07:57all those years ago.
07:59Belgrade's architecture varies greatly
08:01across the city.
08:02And so I found a very unique way
08:05of seeing more sights.
08:07Welcome to Belgrade.
08:08It's a pleasure.
08:09Hopefully we will show you Belgrade
08:11from another perspective,
08:13especially from our tiny time machine
08:14called the Hugo Car
08:16to show you a little bit of Belgrade
08:18as a capital of a much wider country
08:20of Yugoslavia.
08:22A country that no longer exists
08:24but is still there in traces in Belgrade.
08:27We hop into the car,
08:28which Maria from Yugo Tours explains
08:31has a very interesting historical importance.
08:34This one that we are using today
08:35was produced in 1980
08:39and was actually purchased
08:40by a member of the secret police
08:42just the day after Tito,
08:44the presidents of Yugoslavia died.
08:45We start by heading to Novi Belgrade,
08:48an area which was mainly constructed
08:50post-World War I
08:52as Belgrade became
08:53the capital of Yugoslavia.
08:55One such building constructed
08:57in that period
08:58is our first stop,
08:59the Western Gate of Belgrade.
09:02This building is one
09:03of the iconic buildings
09:04of brutalist architecture.
09:06It got its name by French words
09:08Beton Brut, raw concrete
09:10that was used as the main material
09:13to build some of these things.
09:14The architecture might not be for everyone
09:17but it really is an important style
09:19which is observed throughout Novi Belgrade.
09:22To understand more about living
09:24within these buildings,
09:26Maria has brought me to block 23
09:28where we are walking in the footsteps
09:30of local residences.
09:32This is just an incredible space.
09:35As I say, it's an oasis
09:36in a concrete jungle.
09:37Definitely.
09:38There are schools, play areas, coffee shops
09:42and sports facilities
09:44all within the blocks of buildings.
09:46It truly is fascinating
09:48to understand the importance
09:49of these buildings
09:50in the industrialisation
09:52of the city post-World War II
09:54with many residences moving
09:56from the countryside
09:57to buildings like these.
10:00Arriving back in the old town,
10:03parts of modern life are evident around you,
10:06showcased perfectly by the incredible murals on display.
10:10Belgrade has been known for its murals,
10:12for its street art,
10:13especially this part of the city,
10:15Dorchil area.
10:16It's a reminder to be like,
10:17hey, things haven't always been perfect.
10:20And they still not are,
10:21but have fun on the way.
10:25There are two very important rivers in Belgrade,
10:28the Sava and the Danube.
10:30Where they meet is a large natural river island
10:34known locally as Great War Island.
10:37I've decided to explore this wonderful spot
10:39by kayaking with a local instructor named Daniel.
10:43It's a beautiful and calm day,
10:45making floating on the river feel extra special.
10:50Eventually, we make it around this part of the island
10:52and stop to enjoy the views.
10:55In the summertime, they come with the boats.
10:57Here is a lot of boats, small boats.
11:00We don't have a big yacht.
11:02And small boats like five meter long
11:06where families come and children swim here.
11:10Serbians have the best lifestyle.
11:12I can definitely get used to this.
11:14Kayaking, barbecues.
11:16This is my kind of place.
11:17Yeah.
11:18I really enjoyed paddling around the water,
11:21but sadly, it's time to head back to shore.
11:26Belgrade truly is a city which embraces and celebrates
11:30its unique past and traditions,
11:33whilst progressing into a more modern and bold city.
11:37I have collected so many incredible memories,
11:40which will last a lifetime.
11:42Belgrade is a city full of energy.
11:46You can't quite put your finger on what makes it so special,
11:50but I truly have had such a wonderful trip.
11:52But now, time for my next adventure.
11:55.
11:55.
11:55.
11:55.
11:56.
11:56.
11:59.
