00:25A restaurant in South Delhi.
00:28A Wednesday morning and a fire that turned a busy building into a nightmare in minutes.
00:35It's just before 9 a.m. in Malvia Nagar, one of South Delhi's most bustling neighborhoods.
00:41People are starting their day. Staff are showing up for work.
00:46And somewhere inside the Lemon Green Restaurant, a multi-story building in Haas Rani, something goes very, very wrong.
00:55A spark, possibly a short circuit around 8 a.m.
01:00By the time Delhi Fire Service gets the call, it's already 9.45.
01:06The fire has had nearly two hours to breathe.
01:09Ten firefighting vehicles rush to the scene. Water tenders, bowsers, the works.
01:16But this isn't a simple fire. It's spread through the kitchen, climbed the floors and jumped to an adjoining hotel.
01:24And the worst part? People are trapped in the basement.
01:29Firefighters go in. They pull out at least three people from underground, choking, disoriented, alive.
01:37Across the building, rescues add up to 11. But not everyone makes it out.
01:42At least 20 people are dead, over 11 injured, many of them not burned, suffocated by smoke they never saw
01:52coming.
01:53Op leader Somnath Bharti, the former MLA from this very constituency, is on the ground.
01:59He's calling for compensation, for an investigation, for answers.
02:04At last afternoon, there was a fortress on the kitchens, is on the harbor.
02:15At which time in Pardos Mattress is a small Butcher, there is a total in the place that has been
02:1820-25 schwerers.
02:20The buildings are around there is a mass hospital, when people health AWAY people call it.
02:27The metal CUTS IN EXPLOS unit is located in the kitchen and all the floor remained stuck with the doctor
02:32on neue walls.
02:32foreign
03:02and the poisonous gas,
03:05that is how many people are.
03:09And 99% of people are foreigners.
03:13Whether they are South African, Somalia,
03:16or Gulf countries,
03:20all the people who have been here,
03:23they will tell us,
03:25but the truth is very sad.
03:28And I hope that
03:49And the question everyone's asking, the one that comes up after every fire like this
03:55in India, is the same.
03:56Was this building even compliant with fire safety rules?
04:02The fire is now under control, but cooling operations are still going.
04:07The death toll may still change.
04:09And somewhere in that building are families waiting to hear if their person made it out.
04:16This is a developing story.
