00:00The Stanley Cup final game number one, and it starts tonight at 8 p.m.
00:05Vegas and Carolina.
00:06The favorite is Carolina.
00:08Minus 154 here and a total listed at five and a half.
00:13Both of these teams playing unbelievable hockey, hot as a pistol as they get in.
00:17The favorite should be Carolina.
00:19They're the better team.
00:20There was a time, Joe, in the final, what, two weeks of the season?
00:23Look at this.
00:24Carolina's going to be in easily.
00:26They're going to be the number one overseas.
00:27But Vegas, they wanted to get in.
00:29What, they hired Tortorella?
00:31This franchise is a joke.
00:32How could you do that?
00:33They're in the Stanley Cup final, Joe.
00:35Give me a spread line tonight.
00:36Vegas on the road to take on the Hurricanes.
00:39A lot of, Donnie, and I mean a lot of experience on the ice here tonight for this game.
00:45And listen, Vegas, as good as Carolina has been, Vegas has been just as good in a different way.
00:53I mean, any team that can take down Colorado the way they took down Colorado has got my vote here,
01:00Donnie.
01:01Not to mention, and you know this, I think they have the better goaltender.
01:05And we know what wins in these kinds of games and these kinds of series, right?
01:10Hot goaltenders.
01:12Carter Hart has been unbelievable.
01:15And listen, you know, give Freddie Anderson all the credit in the world.
01:18But when you only have to stop 13 shots a game, it makes it a little bit easier here.
01:23I think the Golden Knights have a lot of value in this series, Donnie.
01:28I'm sure we'll get to it next hour when we talk about the prediction markets.
01:33But I would not be shocked if the Golden Knights come out swinging early in this one.
01:38And by the way, Joe points out there, you're looking at Carter Hart.
01:41They win this series.
01:42He's going to be a big factor, Joe.
01:43He's 13-1 doing the Conn Smythe here.
01:45If he stands on his head, maybe that's a chance for him to actually get that award with a double
01:50payoff for you there.
01:51In the NHL as we prepare for Stanley Cup Game 1 action tonight in Carolina between the Vegas Golden Knights
01:58and the Hurricanes.
01:59You did have some sad news over the past week.
02:01As we talked about right here on this show, Claude Lemieux passing away due to suicide.
02:05Now, here's what the family is doing.
02:07They've chosen to donate his brain to Unite Brain Bank at the Boston University CTE Center for Research into Long
02:14-Term Effects of Repetitive Head Impacts and Traumatic Brain Injury.
02:17And you say, well, that's kind of weird.
02:18No, it's not.
02:19Like a 60-year-old guy, like when you were playing hockey in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, same thing
02:23in the NFL.
02:24They don't treat concussions nearly the same way.
02:27Hey, do you see one or two fingers?
02:28Two?
02:29Good.
02:29Get back out there.
02:30Hey, I just got knocked out on the ice.
02:31Oh, look, he returned back for the third period here.
02:33We don't do that anymore because we know more about these brain injuries.
02:36And for somebody that just had such a high on the ice throughout his career, brought back as a hero
02:43into Montreal where they were trying to fight their way to a Stanley Cup and getting all that crowd adoration
02:48there once you got in.
02:50And it turns out a few days later, he passed his way due to suicide.
02:53I like when the families do this, Joe, because, you know, it's tough and it's public and they're donating his
02:58brain to society, basically.
02:59But hopefully this gives us some answers on the impact of how we can actually avoid this here and make
03:05the science better that goes into concussions.
03:09It's just such a sad story, Donnie.
03:12It really was.
03:13I mean, to think where just a couple of nights prior, the way they celebrated him, and rightfully so, the
03:18guy is one of the all-time greats in one of the blue blood organizations in the NHL, in the
03:25Montreal Canadiens.
03:25And he was just, I mean, a legend.
03:29And then, you know, to come on, you just don't know what folks are going through, man.
03:34But, you know, there's, you know, you got to kind of wonder here.
03:39And you're right.
03:40I mean, we hear about guys playing with broken spleens like after what, like, what are we doing here?
03:45Yeah, it's a cautionary tale, so it's good that at least they're going to, they donated and are going to
03:54try to get some answers in a situation that you may never find the right answer.
04:00You know what's interesting about this, too?
04:02Like, it's across all sports, and again, we're much better with this.
04:04Like, oh, the guy got a concussion, be tough, and get out there.
04:06Early 2000s, I remember the conversation in the Pittsburgh Steelers locker room.
04:10Hines were calling out Ben Roethlisberger because he had a concussion and wasn't able to play the next week as
04:15almost being soft.
04:16Boy, those times certainly have changed, and good, because we want to see these hockey greats live a comfortable life
04:21once they retire, not to worry about, hey, I can't walk or better yet.
04:24Boy, my brain is so scrambled, I can't even act, and I can't get through depression here, so hopefully this
04:29goes a long way, and athletes continue to do this along with their families, so we can finally get some
04:33of these answers and put that issue to bed here.
04:36How about the NHL?
04:37Joe, you ever hear this before?
04:39Ratings are due to surge here in the Stanley Cup Final.
04:41What could have changed?
04:42In the past year, Joe, where all of a sudden, you snap your fingers and everybody watches sports at record
04:49-breaking numbers.
04:49The first round was high, the second round's high, the NHL Finals also looking to be high as well, Joe.
04:54I can't figure it out, though.
04:56It's a shocker.
04:58Most watched, Donnie, and yeah, it's, listen, it delivers every year.
05:04It doesn't shock me, because the amount of seven-game series, the game sevens that we've got in the overtime,
05:10it's been phenomenal.
05:12So, yes, it's not exactly, you know, it's two expansion teams, shall we say, right, Carol?
05:18Well, even though they've been around a while, Caroline and Vegas, but I mean, they're certainly not the bluebloods of
05:24hockey.
05:25So, it's the idea that more and more people are getting interested when the only thing they have to go
05:32up to is, I mean, let's face it, Donnie, the NBA playoffs versus the, it should be the highest-rated
05:39thing on television here.
05:41Yeah, it'll be interesting, too, because you have a hockey series with two smaller market teams, and then you have
05:46San Antonio and the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals.
05:49It'll be fun to watch you play it over the next week and a half.
05:51Two champions will be crowned.
05:53How about champions aren't really crowned in Toronto, particularly in hockey, but Mitch Marner was there for a long time.
05:58And look, when he was there, they were a superstar, talented, laden team, and they just couldn't get it done.
06:03So, Spittin' Chicklets with a tweet yesterday, if Vegas wins the Stanley Cup, Mitch Marner will elaborate on his dark
06:09times comment here.
06:10And if anybody didn't hear what Mitch Marner said, basically asking, like, hey, man, it's been some dark times in
06:14my early career.
06:15Well, who was early in your career?
06:16Oh, it was the Toronto Maple Leafs.
06:18And what were those dark times?
06:19A lot of pressure, can't get over the hump.
06:21Now you're in Vegas, Sin City, and you're looking to be in the Stanley Cup final to get over that
06:25hump here.
06:26Yeah, because like other franchises, Donnie, and across all sports, the unrealistic nature of the expectations of fans and the
06:38organization, it weighs on you, man.
06:41If it's great and you win a championship, Donnie, you're a legend, right?
06:46But if you're great and you fall just short, they are going to keep looking to blame somebody.
06:54And guess who?
06:55They blamed a lot here for the failures of that organization.
07:00They have here.
07:01And again, if you would win in Toronto, you would be a legend for life.
07:04Every single game, asking questions and Mitch Marner's dad on the radio, trying to stick up for his son.
07:09But how about this?
07:10Let's hear from Torts here and Mitch.
07:14I'm from Toronto, so I'm contractually obliged to ask you about Mitch Marner for either one of you that wants
07:19to take the question.
07:20I heard you ask Rod Brindamore.
07:21I did.
07:22I did.
07:23What is it about the setup in Vegas that's maybe worked a little better for him this season, certainly in
07:29the postseason, than in the past for him?
07:30I did an interview last week.
07:32I spoke to that.
07:33And for me, I think the change has helped him.
07:37But I think our team is deeper and a better team than what he had played on in Toronto.
07:43Not that Toronto didn't have real good teams.
07:45But you have to have that depth throughout your roster because to go through three rounds or ultimately, hopefully, four
07:51rounds, everybody's got to take their turn.
07:53So there's going to be a time where, you know, somebody else's line steps up.
07:57When you look at Carolina, some of the players on their team that have stepped up, our team is the
08:00very same.
08:02Mitch is playing with tremendous confidence.
08:04I think that he, like, you know, there's probably eight or nine guys in our team that have never been
08:09to a finals before or final before.
08:11And I think he's, you know, really savoring the moment.
08:15That would be a highway I would answer that.
08:18Talking about that Stanley Cup final here, Joe, coming up.
08:20And how about this from ESPN Insights?
08:22The Carolina Hurricanes are the first team to enter the Stanley Cup final with one or fewer losses since the
08:27Oilers back in 83.
08:29They started 11-1.
08:30Then they faced off against the Islanders.
08:32And they got swept.
08:34Super hot team going into the finals.
08:35I don't know if it's going to be a sweep by the Vegas Golden Knights.
08:38But an interesting stat, Joe, nonetheless.
08:42Yeah, that was part of the Al Arbor there for Pete.
08:47I think for the Islanders, 83-84.
08:49Yeah, that was, they ran into a juggernaut there.
08:53You know, the way it kind of feels is like experience matters here.
08:57And nobody's got more experience in the finals than what this Vegas Knights team has.
09:02That's for sure.
09:03That was interesting.
09:04The NHL back in the day, the Flyers won Cups against the Bruins.
09:06How does that happen?
09:07The Flyers won a Cup against the Sabres.
09:08How does that happen?
09:09Kind of interesting here, the way it goes down.
09:11It is what it is.
09:12The NHL on fire.
09:14We'll be back next.
09:21Keep the fire going, Joe.
09:23Lead off.
09:24Show us the way.
09:25What is the play?
09:27Yeah.
09:28Well, I mean, listen.
09:29We got one championship game getting ready to kick off here tonight.
09:33And that's Vegas and Carolina.
09:36And listen, who are we kidding?
09:38In Carolina, the blueprint for them is pretty simple, Donnie.
09:42Right.
09:43It's keep the other team from scoring a lot of goals here.
09:47And I do think they're going to be able to do that.
09:50Game one of this finals totals at five and a half, Donnie.
09:54And I think the formula is simple.
09:56Don't get into a shootout with Vegas.
09:58You'll be fine.
09:59I think Carter Hart is going to make it very difficult for Carolina to score.
10:03I don't think that Vegas is going to have a ton of success in game one.
10:08I think the under at that price, Donnie, carries a lot of value here.
10:13Carolina wins very simply.
10:152-1, 3-1 games.
10:17That's exactly, I think, what we're going to get in game one.
10:21Under and Carolina for me here tonight.
10:23And it starts tonight as we go to the Cal State Marketplace.
10:26The Vegas Golden Knights taking on the Carolina Hurricanes.
10:298 p.m. start from Raleigh, North Carolina.
10:32And the favorite tonight, it's not a surprise.
10:34It's a team that's only lost one time so far in these playoffs.
10:38And that's the Carolina Hurricanes as the favorite listed at 58% to win game number one.
10:44If you take a look, you can also get into the metrics of will they win by two goals or
10:48not.
10:48But simplicity, Joe, if they win tonight, that contract listed at $0.59, so $100 investment pays back $1.70
10:55if the Hurricanes are going to take a 1-0 series lead tonight, Joe.
10:59Yeah, and listen, I mean, the Vegas is, by sweeping Colorado, which is just unthinkable here, Donnie, they've given themselves,
11:08well, a lot of time off.
11:10I mean, a week-long layoff now after that sweep.
11:14And listen, when we usually get situations like this, we see, you know, the pause is good to get healthy,
11:20but it also kind of slows teams down a little bit here.
11:25So it's going to be advantage Carolina at home.
11:28But I still think the goaltending is going to be the story here.
11:30I think Carter Hart, outstanding, unbelievable playoffs thus far.
11:36And what he did to, you know, Colorado, that offense there, unbelievable.
11:42So I am not expecting this to be some sort of high, crazy shootout.
11:46I think this is going to be very methodical.
11:49I like Carolina to win the game.
11:51But I also think if you're expecting 5-4, I don't think we're getting it in this game.
11:56I think this is going to be a much lower scoring affair.
11:58I'd look at the unders here tonight.
12:01Watch out for that penalty kill tonight for those Carolina Hurricanes, man.
12:05Tough to get through good, cocky teams on both sides.
12:08And Torts and Carter, if they win it, Flyers fans, look the other way.
