00:00fit here now and reflect how long she's played,
00:04the longevity, and really the greatest female tennis player
00:07ever that grab a racket,
00:08and in my opinion, is the greatest female athlete of all time.
00:16I gave a call in 1991 a guy knows Richard Williams,
00:20he heard of me because I coach Capriati, funny guy,
00:24he said, you know, I have two daughters and...
00:27I decided to come and look at her
00:30because we live in Compton California
00:32I knew nothing about Compton
00:34other than what you saw on TV
00:35riots and that stuff
00:37I promise you won't get shot
00:40he was the funniest guy ever
00:42and for whatever reason
00:43for whatever reason
00:47it was May
00:48and summer camp was about to start
00:50I said I'm going to go to Compton
00:52and take a look at these two girls
00:53as I said today
00:54I'm probably the only guy in the world
00:56that can say their best vacation ever
00:58was going to Compton, California.
01:00The guy pulls out a piece of paper.
01:02He starts grilling me like I'm in a deposition.
01:05I'm going, who is this guy?
01:07But I think if he wanted someone
01:10to be involved with them,
01:12he wanted a father figure, a role model.
01:15If someone has been there, done that.
01:17We go across the basketball court.
01:19It's parts like the Red Sea.
01:20They were like little celebrities
01:21and they haven't done anything.
01:23They're nine and 10 years old.
01:24but I think getting that publicity in Compton
01:27for two young little girls was very, very uncomfortable
01:30so now I'm seeing these two little kids
01:32arms, legs, hair, beads flying off their head
01:35I'm going, what in God's name am I doing in Compton, California?
01:40the whole landscape changed
01:41when I said game on
01:43they started popping the popcorn, extra butter
01:45the preparation got better
01:47but the burning desire
01:49there was a rage
01:51there was something inside these two little girls
01:54and it blew me away
01:56I go, let me tell you something
01:57it was more about Venus
01:58because she was more mature
02:00you got the next female Michael Jordan on your hand
02:03and he puts his arm around me
02:05he goes, no brother man
02:06I got the next two
02:08I knew both girls
02:09with the right coaching
02:11and financial help
02:13they could be number one in the world
02:17and they could transcend the sport
02:19I just saw a total package
02:22both girls different
02:23that could
02:24but it had to be molded
02:25you know, it had to be developed
02:26and it needed to be nurtured
02:29and they needed the financial help
02:30but it's what I saw on the inside
02:32or I would have left Compton that night
02:34when they were little
02:35okay
02:36Sharina was a prankster
02:38she was still very immature
02:40like most kids
02:41and she would mess around
02:42I would say
02:43you got to run
02:44she'd go, why?
02:45her determination
02:48was like no other
02:50it was like a little pit bull
02:51when she got a hold of you
02:52she wasn't going to let go
02:54when she competed
02:56it didn't matter
02:57there was a piece of chicken on the table
02:59or first to get in line
03:00she had to be first
03:02that's a great quality
03:04to have in your pocket
03:06along with speed
03:08quickness
03:09strength
03:10eventually the best serve ever
03:11in women's tennis
03:12and the ability just to play through you
03:14to sit here now
03:15and reflect
03:16how long she's played
03:18the longevity
03:19and really the greatest female tennis player
03:21to grab a racket
03:22and in my opinion
03:23the greatest female athlete of all time
03:25she's checked every box
03:27and she created a few more
03:29I think it was when she was 17
03:31and she won her first U.S. Open
03:32and beat Hingis
03:33it was unexpected
03:34and you could see the look on her face
03:37if you go back and look at that tape
03:40it's like
03:40oh my god
03:41did I just win the U.S. Open
03:43right then and there
03:45I knew even more so
03:46even though I knew it
03:47the best is yet to come
03:49I didn't know it'd be 22 more Grand Slams
03:52and she'd be playing until age 40
03:54but the first one
03:55is always
03:56I think most people will say
03:58the most special
03:59in a lot of
04:00in a lot of sports
04:02I think she wore her emotions on her sleeve
04:05I think she said
04:06to all female athletes around the world
04:09or young girls
04:10you can
04:11you can
04:13motivate yourself
04:14you can inspire yourself
04:15and be loud
04:16you know
04:17because off the court
04:18you're this
04:19but on the court
04:20you're there to compete
04:22okay
04:22and I think she brought that element
04:24that rage
04:25just like I saw
04:27when she was 9 years old
04:28that Compton street fight
04:29and she showed it on her sleeve
04:31I think she knows
04:33it's time
04:34you know
04:35she probably feels
04:36you know
04:36she doesn't have the cat-like reflexes
04:38like before
04:39you know
04:40you lose a little firepower
04:41people aren't afraid of you
04:43I think she just loves
04:44the crowd
04:45she's a performer
04:46she's a showman
04:47she loves the competition
04:49I don't think
04:50she had it planned out
04:52how it was going to happen
04:53it's just a feeling
04:54that you get over time
04:55I think it's the best possible way
04:58because
04:59she's doing on her term
05:01I think this is the perfect way
05:02for her to call
05:03game set match
05:04Serena Williams
