00:24Chris Beatty here for Vocal Coach
00:26with a practical tip to help you
00:28become a better singer and become
00:30more aware of your voice
00:31so here's the question
00:33do you know what your voice sounds
00:36like to others? I mean
00:38what does your speaking voice sound like to others?
00:40what does your natural default
00:41singing voice sound like to others?
00:44and the fact is most of us
00:46don't know. We're used
00:48to recording a message on our cell phones
00:50then being kind of shocked
00:51at the sound of it, only to
00:54find out from our friends that
00:55yeah, that is how they hear
00:57our voices
00:58well, why is there this difference
01:01between what we hear
01:02and what others hear?
01:04well, here's the answer
01:05we get a preview of sound
01:08that comes up the side of the face
01:10right into the ears
01:11in addition to that
01:13we get some inner vibration
01:14in the ear, in the head
01:16and we judge that
01:18as being our sound
01:20but it really isn't
01:22well, then the question is
01:23how can we find out
01:25what we sound like
01:26so we know
01:27without having to record it
01:29well, the answer is
01:30found in something
01:31as simple as this
01:34I'm going to use
01:35these file folders
01:36as sound deflectors
01:39go ahead and look around
01:40where you are right now
01:42and find some file folders
01:44maybe a couple of magazines
01:45a couple of pieces of paper
01:47something that you can
01:49put up in front of your ears
01:51sticking out from the side
01:53of your head
01:54that will block
01:55that preview of sound
01:57that comes up the side
01:58of the face
01:58now when I talk to you
02:00like this
02:01it sounds just the same
02:02to you
02:03but it sounds quite
02:04different to me
02:05because the sound
02:06is now going out
02:07in front of me
02:09around the room
02:10and it's affected
02:10by temperature
02:11humidity
02:12number of people
02:14present
02:14thickness of carpet
02:15just all these variables
02:17then
02:18around into my ear
02:20and that's what
02:21the listener hears
02:22so I want you to
02:23find something
02:25put it up in front
02:26of your ears
02:27if you can't find
02:28anything else
02:28use your hands
02:30and we're going to
02:31count from one to five
02:32I'll do it first
02:33and then you do it
02:34and see how different
02:35your voice sounds to you
02:37one
02:38two
02:38three
02:39four
02:40five
02:41now you do it
02:45it sounded different
02:47didn't it
02:47now this time
02:48let's go like this
02:49one
02:50two
02:51three
02:52four
02:53five
02:54six
02:54seven
02:55eight
02:56nine
02:57ten
02:58and the sound
03:00changed
03:00as far as you heard
03:02but to the listener
03:03it didn't change at all
03:05in other words
03:06we're not used to
03:08what our own voices
03:09sound like
03:10why is this important
03:11because it helps you
03:13get a handle on
03:14how others
03:15hear your voice
03:16in future vocal tips
