00:00Today, I graduate as a doctor from Harvard Medical School,
00:03largely because my family sacrificed so that the possibility always felt imaginable to me.
00:10But I also know that this life was shaped by circumstance, by borders, timing, and luck.
00:17The kind of circumstance that found me here in class,
00:19while a U.S. missile flattened our home in Arab Salim, the village where my mom hails from.
00:25Lucky.
00:27Unlucky, and unlike me, there are medical students in Lebanon and in Palestine
00:31who also dare to imagine a future in medicine,
00:34except they are forced to study beneath the nauseating hum of drones overhead.
00:40They memorize the same anatomy, lose sleep over the same exams,
00:44except their classrooms collapse around them,
00:47and the hospitals they once trained in are now rubble.
00:50The past few years have laid bare the most profound contradictions.
00:54In the very classrooms where we learned to recognize dehumanization as a danger to medicine,
00:59we were told to stay silent, a ghazza unfolded before us.
01:03Funded by our own tax dollars, materially supported by this university's own endowment,
01:09and ideologically justified by those who taught us better.
01:12We discussed health equity and the social determinants of health,
01:16only to learn quickly that those principles disappear when the lives in question become politically inconvenient.
01:22And yet, amidst that disillusionment, we saw something even more powerful,
01:26a movement of students refusing to trade their conscience for comfort.
01:31And so let me do the same now.
01:33As we make our oaths, as future doctors devoted to the protection of all human life,
01:38let us never underestimate the power we carry,
01:40not only as doctors, but as human beings capable of altering a conversation,
01:44a community, and the course of a life.
01:46And I was able to say thank you to many teachers who we believe.
01:48And if you all struggle, you need to be ovulated.
