00:00If you're going to do it, do it.
00:05Say what you can do.
00:07Do what you say.
00:09If you can't do it, don't say you can do it.
00:10Don't over-leverage yourself.
00:11Don't over-leverage a decision and then jump in and kind of dip a toe.
00:15I think I'll try it out.
00:16No, think if you're going to try it out beforehand, but when it's time to go, dive.
00:20Finish it.
00:21Find out.
00:22Come out the other side.
00:23Don't leave it and go,
00:26Ooh, if I just woulda, uh-uh.
00:28That keeps me up at night.
00:29I think it keeps a lot of us up at night.
00:30When you half-ass something that you just don't know, whether you failed or succeeded,
00:35got what you want or didn't get what you want,
00:36finding out and looking in the mirror and going,
00:40I didn't half-ass it.
00:42I went all the way.
00:42I found out and that ain't for me.
00:44Or I found out and you're damn right that is for me.
00:47That's a great place to get to.
00:49I think part of the challenges in life is a lot of us are running around half-assing ourselves,
00:56half-fooling ourselves, not full of ourselves,
00:58not studying ourselves enough,
01:00not holding ourselves to task enough,
01:02not patting our own self on the back when we do get what we want enough,
01:05not cracking our own whip on our backside when we do get out of line even though we knew better.
01:10I wish we were more full of ourselves that way.
01:15Someone said this to me before.
01:16Matthew, you're so full of yourself.
01:18And without thinking, I was like, well, who else am I supposed to be full of?
01:22That's a good line.
01:22And I stopped after.
01:23I was like, that's exactly what I meant.
01:25And I wrote that down.
01:26I wish more people were more full of themselves.
01:30I think we should take some time to be able to look in the mirror and own that thing that
01:34we pulled off
01:35and go, good job.
01:38That's what you wanted.
01:40That's what you got.
01:41At the same time, be able to, as we do more often, look in the mirror.
01:46When we fail and go, eh-eh, bogey, you did not want to.
01:53Give others and yourself more credit.
01:57Happiness, you can't guarantee it, but there is a science to satisfaction.
02:02You can look at habits that engineered less pain in your life, maybe more pleasure,
02:09but at least less pain.
02:11And that's a win.
02:14So much easier to be supportive and gentle of other people than of ourselves.
02:19You know, you will happily bestow this sort of gentle, reassuring pat on the shoulder
02:26when somebody succeeds or falls short when they tried their best.
02:30Yet, given the fact that you tried your best, you give yourself a kick on the way out of the
02:35door
02:35and a harsh word to follow you.
02:37Yep.
02:37Because I got myself in the pickle.
02:39Because things didn't go how I wanted it to go or how I believed it could go.
02:43Life's the ironic tragedy.
02:45Life is pain.
02:47I mean, I'm the reason that I stepped in shit, which is also an asset.
02:52Even if someone goes, why are you giving yourself so much credit for screwing that up?
02:58We're going to make mistakes.
03:00You've got to own them.
03:02Then you've got to make amends.
03:04And then you've got to move on.
03:06Guilt and regret kills many a man before their time.
03:10Well, turn the page.
03:12Get off the ride.
03:14You are the author of the book of your life.
03:21There are habits that I notice of things I take care of in my life, health-wise, faith-wise, father
03:26-wise, husband-wise.
03:27If I'm doing that consistently, there's less valleys.
03:31The ironic tragedy is that life has to be lived forward but only makes sense in reverse.
03:35When you look back, we can all connect every single dot.
03:39It's mathematical, scientific how we got to this table right here.
03:44It's all connected if we go back and look at it.
03:46And there's a whole lot of, I thought that was the end.
03:49Well, it was the end, but it was the beginning of this thing.
03:54What you're leaning into is that mystery going forward, right?
03:57That ironic tragedy that you have something to push off the,
04:00well, I don't know what I do want, but I do know I don't want that.
04:03You have leverage.
04:04Yes.
04:05You know, it's there.
04:09You know, we always say, well, who are you?
04:11You know, I want to figure out who you are.
04:12And we ask, I try to ask my kids that now.
04:16Well, I want you to know who you are.
04:17And a part of that who's helped me is Bob Dylan's line.
04:20It's like, I don't know what all this talk's about who we are, man.
04:22We are all just what we create ourselves to be.
04:25And that gives me a little, oh, that's relaxing.
04:27But the, it's so much easier to figure out who you're not.
04:33And if you start eliminating the who I'm not,
04:36by sheer mathematics, you end up.
04:39Moving towards.
04:40More of what feeds you and who you are.
04:42And it's a hell of a lot easier thing to go,
04:45how can I get rid of some bullshit in my life than it is to go,
04:48well, how do I go to my true self?
04:53Do I want to press the accelerator more quickly?
04:56Or do I want to take my foot off the f***ing brake?
05:03Sometimes the hard work and the endurance and the elbow grease,
05:06the work harder, we were talking about that hustle,
05:08is not the way out.
05:10Sometimes it's, I need to back up, laugh,
05:12have a sip of my favorite whatever,
05:14and dance my way through the raindrops out of this sun.
05:20And even looking at the things that are bad and going,
05:23oh, thank you.
05:25Appreciate that.
05:28I think one of the themes of your worldview
05:31that I've become familiar with
05:32is alchemizing bad times into good ones.
05:36A reminder that things that seem bad
05:38can end up being good.
05:40How can people,
05:42or how do you,
05:43have more of that perspective during a hard time?
05:49I probably start off
05:51intellectualizing something
05:52that I know I probably should believe in
05:54but don't believe in it,
05:56and convince myself,
05:58even to an extent to trick myself,
06:01that, you know,
06:02to sit here and go,
06:03well, you just tell yourself,
06:04this too shall pass.
06:05Okay, great.
06:05Well, what the hell's that mean?
06:06Even if it's true.
06:07In the moment, you're like,
06:09what are you f***ing talking about, man?
06:10I'm in the debit section.
06:12I'm in a warning section.
06:15This sucks.
06:17I think that,
06:18how much I'm conscious of it or not,
06:21my undeniable optimism and faith
06:25that this isn't all it is,
06:27and if it is,
06:29oh, so what?
06:31That's, okay.
06:32Well, then really, so what?
06:33You know what I mean?
06:34What's the big deal?
06:35It minimizes,
06:37I don't,
06:37I seem to have a tendency
06:38not to make a bigger deal
06:40out of things that
06:42other people make a bigger deal.
06:44Dramas.
06:44I don't like to create false drama.
06:45When it comes and it's hard,
06:46I am affected.
06:49I get the blues.
06:50I get sad.
06:51I get mad.
06:52I'm a s*** to be around.
06:53I can't get to sleep.
06:55I got demons in my own head
06:56trying to work the riddle out.
06:58Why did this happen?
06:59That's the other thing
07:00that's tough for me
07:00is I think that any bad thing
07:02that happens to me,
07:02my initial reaction is,
07:03what'd you do wrong
07:04to lead to this?
07:08I heard a quote recently
07:09that said,
07:10every man knows reflection
07:11and introspection
07:12when he's at his lowest.
07:14Bad times,
07:15you can't do anything
07:17other than wallow
07:18in retrospective assessment.
07:20Yeah.
07:21But one of my favorite things
07:23I've learned from you is
07:24when things are going well,
07:26given that that's presumably
07:28what you want to have more of,
07:30maybe worth deconstructing that.
07:32Yes.
07:33Can I try and bottle
07:35some science here
07:36to why things are going well?
07:38And I did find consistencies.
07:40You were appreciating more.
07:42You were pointing out
07:43beautiful things
07:43and not taking them for granted.
07:45And so I found a list of things.
07:47I'm like,
07:47and when I get off track,
07:48I try to remind myself,
07:49ah, you've been slacking
07:50on some of those.
07:50I've definitely found consistencies
07:52and I think we all have them
07:54if we just notate them along the way
07:56that they're not by accident.
07:58Let's cheers.
07:59Let's have a cheers on the way
08:00for all the things
08:01that are work
08:01for when we have going right.
08:03Also knowing that it's not forever,
08:05that we will have a mountain
08:07to climb here shortly.
08:09What's my best advice
08:10I need to give myself right now
08:11is listen to my own damn advice.
08:18Well, we used to look up in the sky
08:20and wonder at our place in the stars.
08:23I want to skip the flattery
08:25and the attaboys
08:26because I do know this.
08:29The sooner that we become less impressed
08:32with our life,
08:33with our accomplishments,
08:34with our career,
08:35with whatever that prospect is
08:37in front of us,
08:37the sooner we become less impressed
08:39and more involved
08:40with that and these things,
08:43the sooner we get a whole lot better
08:46at doing it.
08:48It's like we've forgotten
08:49who we are at home.
08:51Explorers, pioneers,
08:52not caretakers.
08:53Now, why do you pursue things
08:55that scare you?
08:56Why seek the role that's hard?
08:58Because it costs me something.
09:01Because it costs.
09:02It comes with a price.
09:04It's not really a risk
09:04unless you lose the fight.
09:06I feel more alive in them.
09:08I have an experience
09:09in the making of them.
09:11I'm nervous every day
09:12I come to work.
09:13I hear the things
09:14you can't get away with
09:16in this world
09:16and everything you can't.
09:18Life is not easy.
09:19It is not.
09:20Don't try to make it that way.
09:22Life's not fair.
09:23It never was.
09:23It isn't now
09:24and it won't ever be.
09:25Do not fall into the trap,
09:27the entitlement trap,
09:29of feeling like you're a victim.
09:31You are not.
09:32Get over it.
09:33Get on it.
09:34And yes,
09:34most things are more rewarding
09:36when you break a sweat
09:37to get them.
09:38I feel like
09:39when I nail a day
09:40and I knock
09:41and I know I did,
09:42I feel like,
09:43yes!
09:43I have a measure
09:44at the end of the day
09:45of like,
09:46you set out to do something,
09:47you prepared for it,
09:48you had intention
09:49and you did it.
09:50That gives me gratification.
09:52That makes me feel,
09:53gives me significance.
09:54That gives me confidence.
09:56Be brave.
09:58Have courage.
09:58And when you do,
10:00you get stronger.
10:01You get more aware.
10:02You get more respectful
10:04of yourself
10:06and that which you fear.
10:09I want to talk about
10:10our opponent
10:10this afternoon.
10:12They're bigger,
10:12faster,
10:13stronger,
10:14more experienced.
10:15And on paper,
10:16they're just better.
10:18And they know it too.
10:22I want to tell you something
10:23that you don't know.
10:27They don't know
10:27your heart.
10:30What,
10:30because heading out there
10:31is what I feel like
10:32I was born to do?
10:34And it excites me.
10:37Just because you can?
10:40Nah,
10:41come on.
10:42It's not a good enough
10:43reason to do something.
10:45Even when it means
10:47having more.
10:48Be discerning.
10:50Choose it
10:51because you want it.
10:53Do it
10:53because you want to.
10:56It's on you.
10:59It's on you.
11:06We remember the stuff
11:07we earn,
11:08the stuff we experience
11:09more than what the teacher
11:10tells us
11:11or what someone gives us
11:12for free.
11:13We just do.
11:14We broke a proverbial
11:15sweat on it,
11:16whether it was mental
11:16or physical or whatever.
11:17We built it.
11:19We understand.
11:19We felt how we got it,
11:21how we achieved it,
11:22how we got what we wanted.
11:26Those stick with us,
11:27whether we forget them
11:28intellectually,
11:29they were written
11:30in our lineage
11:30and they build resilience
11:32and they build
11:33a healthy,
11:35true optimism
11:35going forward
11:36to know that,
11:37oh, no,
11:37I've worked for something
11:38before and achieved it.
11:40Delayed gratification.
11:41Oh,
11:42there are choices
11:43I can make today
11:43for myself
11:44that will pay me back
11:47later in life.
11:49And I've got friends
11:50and trust me,
11:51I've done it myself,
11:52you know,
11:53that lose a job
11:55and then get another
11:55but won't take it
11:56because it's less salary
11:57than maybe the one
11:57they had before.
11:58And all of a sudden
11:59find themselves
12:00three, four, five,
12:01six, seven, eight years,
12:02a decade later going,
12:04they're still stuck.
12:05They didn't do anything.
12:06They're still saying like,
12:07no, I'm going to find that thing.
12:09And I'm going,
12:09you missed a decade, man.
12:11Just go do that one
12:12that you love to do
12:13that maybe was going
12:14to pay you less
12:15because you'd at least
12:16been building something
12:17through the day
12:18and who knows
12:18what that would have led to.
12:20Maybe that would have led
12:21to something
12:21where you're getting paid
12:22five times more
12:22than you were
12:24doing something else
12:25you love even more.
12:26So sometimes it's not even
12:27about what choice we make.
12:29Just make a choice
12:29and commit to it
12:30and go and dive in.
12:35So while we're here
12:37and they're going to run
12:38across the Jumbotron,
12:39let's make it a place
12:41where we break a sweat,
12:43where we believe,
12:45where we enjoy
12:45the process of succeeding
12:47in the places and ways
12:49that we are fashioned to,
12:50where we don't have to look
12:51over our shoulder
12:52because we're too busy
12:53doing what we're good at,
12:56voluntarily keeping
12:57our own counsel
12:58because we want to,
13:00traveling towards
13:01immortal finish lines,
13:02we write our own book,
13:04overcoming our fears.
13:06We make friends
13:06with ourselves.
13:08And that is the place
13:10that I'm talking about.
13:13from the soles of your feet
13:15with every ounce of blood
13:16you've got in your body,
13:18lay it on the line
13:19until the final whistle blows.
13:20And if you do that,
13:24if you do that,
13:28we cannot lose.
13:30So turn the page,
13:32get off the ride.
13:34You are the author
13:35of the book of your life.
13:38Knowing who we are
13:39is hard.
13:41It's hard.
13:42Give yourself a break.
13:44Eliminate who you are not
13:46first,
13:47and you're going to find yourself
13:48where you need to be.
13:51And the Oscar goes to
13:54Matthew McConaughey.
13:55I had a very important person
13:56in my life come to me
13:56and say,
13:57who's your hero?
13:57And I said,
13:58I don't know,
13:58I've got to think about that.
13:58Give me a couple of weeks.
13:59I come back two weeks later,
14:00this person comes up
14:01and says,
14:01who's your hero?
14:02I said,
14:02I thought about it.
14:03You know who it is?
14:03I said,
14:04it's me in 10 years.
14:06So I turned 25,
14:0710 years later.
14:09That same person comes to me
14:10and goes,
14:10so are you a hero?
14:11And I was like,
14:12not even close.
14:15No, no, no.
14:16She said,
14:16why?
14:17I said,
14:17because my hero is me at 35.
14:19So you see,
14:19every day,
14:20every week,
14:20every month,
14:21and every year of my life,
14:23my hero is always 10 years away.
14:26I'm never going to be my hero.
14:27I'm not going to attain that.
14:29I know I'm not.
14:29And that's just fine with me
14:30because that keeps me
14:31with somebody
14:32to keep on chasing.
14:38So to any of us,
14:39whatever those things are,
14:40whatever it is we look up to,
14:42whatever it is we look forward to,
14:44and whoever it is we're chasing,
14:45to that I say,
14:46amen.
14:47To that I say,
14:47all right,
14:48all right,
14:48all right.
14:50And to that I say,
14:51just keep living,
14:52huh?
14:57Nobody has ever choked?
14:59I have.
15:01You know what I'm talking about,
15:02fumbling at the goal line,
15:03stuck your foot in your mouth
15:04once you got to the microphone,
15:05had a brain freeze on the exam
15:07that you were totally prepared for,
15:09forgot the punchline to a joke
15:10in front of 4,000 graduating students
15:12at the University of Houston commencement.
15:16Or maybe you've had that feeling of,
15:18oh my God,
15:19life just cannot get any better
15:22than this moment.
15:23And ask yourself,
15:25do I deserve this?
15:26Now what happens when we get that feeling?
15:29Tense up.
15:31We have this sort of outer body experience
15:33where we are literally seeing ourself
15:36in the third person.
15:37And we realize that the moment
15:39just got bigger than us.
15:43You ever felt that way?
15:45I have.
15:48And it's because we have created
15:51a fictitious ceiling,
15:53a roof,
15:54to our expectations of ourselves.
15:57A limit where we think
15:59it's all too good to be true.
16:01But it's not.
16:03And it's not our right to say
16:05or believe it is.
16:08We shouldn't create these restrictions
16:10on ourselves.
16:12A blue ribbon,
16:13a statue,
16:13a score,
16:14a great idea,
16:15the love of our life,
16:16a euphoric bliss.
16:18Who are we
16:19to think that we don't deserve
16:21or haven't earned these gifts
16:22when we get them?
16:25It's not our right.
16:27But,
16:28if we stay in process,
16:31all right,
16:31within ourselves,
16:32in the joy of the doing,
16:35we will never choke
16:36at the finish line.
16:38Why?
16:39Because we aren't thinking
16:40of the finish line.
16:41Because we're not looking
16:42at the clock.
16:43We're not watching ourselves
16:45on the jumbotron
16:46performing the very act
16:47that we're in the middle of.
16:49No,
16:50we're in process.
16:51The approach
16:52is the destination
16:53and we are never finished.
16:55Bo Jackson,
16:56what did he do?
16:57He used to run
16:57over the goal line,
16:58through the end zone
16:59and up the tunnel.
17:01The greatest snipers
17:02and marksmen
17:03in the world,
17:04they don't aim
17:05at the target.
17:06They aim on the other side
17:08of the target.
17:09We do our best
17:11when our destinations
17:11are beyond
17:12the measurement,
17:14when our reach
17:15continually exceeds
17:16our grasp
17:17and when we have
17:18immortal finish lines.
17:20And when we do this,
17:22the race is never over.
17:23The journey has no port.
17:25The adventure never ends
17:26because we are always
17:27on the way.
17:29So do this.
17:31Do this and let them,
17:32let somebody else
17:33come up and tap you
17:34on the shoulder
17:34and say,
17:35hey,
17:35you scored.
17:37Let them run up
17:38and tap you on the shoulder
17:39and say,
17:39man,
17:39you won.
17:41Let them come tell you,
17:42you can go home now.
17:44Let them say,
17:46I love you too.
17:48Let them say,
17:50thank you.
17:52Take the lid off
17:53the man-made roofs
17:54that we put above
17:55ourselves
17:56and always play
17:57like an underdog.
17:59Here we go.
18:10Responsibility of freedom
18:10and the freedom
18:11in responsibility.
18:12Life's more than just
18:14straight Saturdays
18:15with as much cake
18:15as you want to eat.
18:16It just is.
18:17You will see how long
18:17you last doing that
18:18if you really do it.
18:19You won't last that long.
18:21Responsibility is
18:21appreciation of a past.
18:23It's building of a lineage.
18:25It's investing in ourselves.
18:26It's investing in something
18:27we started to build yesterday
18:28that we want to take
18:29into tomorrow.
18:30There's a response
18:31that gives us freedom.
18:33So to actually
18:34have true freedom,
18:35we have to be more
18:36responsible for certain things
18:37for ourselves,
18:38who we are,
18:40constantly investigating
18:41and interrogating
18:42our better selves
18:43to say,
18:44I'm going to be a little bit
18:45better at this tomorrow,
18:47knowing that
18:48that we never land.
18:49We never,
18:49we never,
18:50there's no,
18:50there's no ta-da moment.
18:51And that is one thing
18:52I think we all got to watch
18:53because we all
18:54are so result oriented.
18:57But there's no ta-da moment.
18:58We're always chasing yet.
19:00And if we can get comfortable
19:02and understand
19:02and laugh
19:03and be ready to work hard
19:05at the fact that
19:05we're all just achieving
19:07our way to the unachievable
19:09and that's as good as it gets
19:11and that's pretty damn awesome.
19:16Good luck.
19:18You're Steve Levitt.
19:19You're Steve Levitt.
19:45You're Steve Levitt.
