Designer Hartley a Venezia con prototipo da Design Museum London

00:03I'm a bespoke bicycle framebuilder and I hand make steel and stainless steel bicycles in
00:09my workshop in London. Each bicycle is tailor made for an individual so that we can get the
00:16best fit, the best comfort, the best performance and really tailor the entire bicycle to do all
00:26the individual things that that customer requires and the type of cycling they want to do. Each
00:35bike is handmade from the tubes so we start with the raw materials, tubes, sheet metal and
00:44then cut and mitre the tubes, braise them together and then finish. And then my background was
00:53a jeweller so I add lots of custom unique details either in sterling silver or stainless steel
01:00to the bikes to try and fabricate a bike that's both beautiful and functions really really
01:06well. So the bikes I've got on show here, one this one here was exhibited at the Design Museum
01:14in London and made for an exhibition they had called Cycle Revolution and this is a kind
01:21of celebration of UK craftsmanship so I tried to bring together lots of UK craftsmen and
01:28engineers to make a bike that celebrated the heritage of making in the UK. And then the
01:36other bike I've got in front is a customer's bike and this is a very high performance lightweight
01:42stainless steel road bike made with Columbus tubing which is an Italian manufacturer. And whilst I'm here
01:50at the show I'm going to be working on this frame here so this is just been braised it's like
01:56in
01:56it's it's like its initial stage. I will be cleaning up all of the the fillets here to make it
02:04perfectly
02:04smooth ready for paint. I'm also going to be working on some smaller components which is one of my
02:10specialities. These are stainless steel so these are parts for the bar ends of a bike so these have been
02:18hand carved initially in wax and then cast and it's the jewellery making technique that I've transferred
02:23to bicycle making. Homo Faber for me is about the importance of continuing with a handmade tradition
02:34but also like bringing in performance and utilizing machines where necessary but it's like the the
02:41marrying of the two like hand making and technology together.
