02:17Welcome to a Weird News Roundup presented by the Something Offbeat Podcast.
02:22We bring you strange tales out of Odyssey stations from coast to coast.
02:28I'm your Roundup host, Lauren Berry.
02:30For our peek into the unusual this week, we're headed to the seashore.
02:35Our first stop is Riviera Beach, Florida, where we'll hear about the lucky recovery of a fanny pack filled with
02:43$30,000.
02:45You'll never guess where the money came from.
02:47Then we'll sail to New Orleans, Louisiana, along the Gulf Coast, to check on the global gathering of tall ships.
02:55Think pirate ships with those big masts and tall sails.
02:59All for the 250th anniversary of the United States this summer.
03:05In the second half of the show, things get a bit scarier.
03:08We'll learn about a surprising summer hazard.
03:12Beach and cafe umbrellas that can turn deadly.
03:16Then we'll listen to a conversation about whether the Dead Sea is doomed to dry up soon.
03:23Here's Bob Rose and Greg Cassidy of the Bob Rose Show out of Odyssey Station 97.3 The Sky in
03:30Gainesville, Florida.
03:32They're talking about a story that proves that while you gotta catch them all, it's also important to give them
03:39back sometimes.
03:40I promise that Pokemon reference will make sense in just a moment.
03:44Keep listening.
03:47A guy in Riviera Beach, Florida.
03:49He's in the bathroom.
03:51At a Wawa.
03:53Oh, they're pretty busy there.
03:56And spots a guy's bag who he left, you know, the guy left it behind, apparently.
04:01And, man, he tried to catch up to him and looking for him because he left his fanny pack hanging
04:06on a rail.
04:08He said, I saw it.
04:09I grabbed it, tried to locate the person, unable to find the owner.
04:12And then I opened it to try to find the person's identification so I could get it back to them.
04:19What did he find?
04:22$30,000.
04:24That's a lot.
04:25$30,000 in cash.
04:26Oh, my goodness.
04:27This is where your morals, mores, principles, everything has to kick in.
04:34I'd be like, I'm so happy I found your $4,000 in cash.
04:39I am so happy.
04:40Yeah, it was on the ground.
04:42Somebody looked like they started to go through it.
04:44I don't know.
04:45I shoot them away.
04:48Gosh, that's bad to even think like that.
04:50Yeah, but funny.
04:51Come on, snap out of it.
04:52Yeah, come on, Bob.
04:53All right.
04:54Be a good guy.
04:54He said, yeah, I knew the money belonged to somebody else, so he brought it to their attention.
05:01And this was, hey, this was real money.
05:03This wasn't like money laundering.
05:05You think, oh, $30,000 in cash.
05:06What are you up to, pal?
05:08Well, he sold his whole Pokemon collection for that.
05:12Oh, wow.
05:14Yeah, his whole Pokemon collection.
05:17Imagine that, $30,000 in Pokemon.
05:19Somebody handed him $30,000 in cash for his Pokemon card.
05:23Yes.
05:24But it gets even better.
05:27Yeah.
05:28The amount was going to be helping to pay for his sister's medical procedure.
05:35Oh.
05:35Yeah.
05:36So that.
05:37Oh, can you imagine how he felt when he realized he lost it then?
05:39Yeah.
05:40All the more so.
05:41Yeah.
05:42Oh, heartbreaking.
05:43Well, he was crying when he was getting the money back.
05:45I'll bet.
05:46And, yep.
05:47Wow.
05:48He said, that's a good man.
05:49Yeah.
05:51And that is.
05:52That's not always the way these things turn out.
05:54Yep.
05:55And his name is Luis Salazar.
05:58And he is today's unsung hero.
06:02I like that.
06:03Although he's getting sung a little bit.
06:04Well, that's all right.
06:05He should be.
06:05Because he was in Wawa's.
06:07That is a good Florida man story.
06:09We don't get too many of those.
06:11We'll take what we can get.
06:12Yep.

08:24As a good deed was melting hearts in Riviera Beach, a blast from the past was headed to
08:30the harbors of New Orleans.
08:32Fully rigged boats with tall masts that look like they're from a painting or a historical
08:38movie arrived from all over the world this week for a summer celebrating the 250th anniversary
08:45of the U.S.
08:47Tall ships were a key feature of bicentennial celebrations 50 years ago.
08:53Now, Sail 250 plans to celebrate the nation's cestercentennial with the largest ever flotilla
09:00of tall ships from around the world.
09:04Tell me about Sail 250 for people that have no idea what this is.
09:09Explain it from the beginning, please.
09:11Well, Tommy, thank you for that.
09:13We are proud to be the inaugural host city for Sail 250, which is part of America 250,
09:19the nationwide commemoration of the United States' 250th anniversary.
09:23That's Mark Romig, a senior advisor for New Orleans and Company and the lead for Sail 250.
09:30He joined Tommy Tucker from Odyssey Station WWL in New Orleans to discuss the flotilla plans.
09:38Is one ship not already in town?
09:41Yeah, actually, the Swedish tall ship, the Gladden, came in last week a little early.
09:47They wanted to give their crew some shore leave, so they sent them back over to Sweden
09:51and they kept the skeletal crew on the vessel.
09:54But they'll all be coming back today and tomorrow.
09:58So the Gladden is in.
09:59They're down there at Goldring-Wildenburg Riverfront Park.
10:02And then the Trent, the British ship, the Trent came in the day before yesterday.
10:08So they're down around Thalia Street.
10:10So they came in early.
10:12We're taking good care of them.
10:14But the majority of the ships start coming in tomorrow.
10:16And then the majority of the tall ships will start coming up the river.
10:20And you'll be able to see those beginning around 8 o'clock in the morning on Thursday.
10:24And they'll be coming in about an hour apart as they come to the Enville Street docking area
10:31and get moored, lined up, and get ready to host our visitors.
10:35So with the seamen that were on the ship and left, no scurvy or anything like that, right?
10:41No, all good.
10:42All good.
10:43All checked out.
10:44And I tell you, we're going to have about 3,000 crew members from around the world in New Orleans
10:51celebrating our 250th, but also getting a good taste of our hospitality,
10:56which, you know, no one does it better than us.
10:58Absolutely.
10:58So tell me how people can get involved with this and the ships.
11:02Can you see them from the Crest City Connection?
11:04I'm not advising people to take their eyes off the road.
11:07Let me rephrase.
11:09What's the best way to see the ships?
11:13I think the best way to see the ships is to go down to the Gold Ring-Wildenburg Riverfront Park,
11:18which, you know, has been opened into an expanded park area to view the ships right across from the,
11:28you know, the French Quarter area of the Bienville Street War Ferry will be where you can actually board
11:33the tall ships for tours beginning Thursday and running through Sunday.
11:38And those tours will run once the ship gets docked.
11:41The ships become ready to go the afternoon of that Thursday, but all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
11:47And then down toward Julia Street where the large amphibious aircraft carrier,
11:53the Kearsarge, will be docked along with Coast Guard and the ship from Great Britain,
11:59the British ship Trent, and the Friesland from the Netherlands.
12:03So you'll have an amazing, excuse me, the Friesland actually will be docked down at Pullen Avenue.
12:09It's the Mohawk and the Trent will be down toward Daly Street.
12:13But you'll have 12 ships total.
12:15It's the largest gathering of ships in my lifetime and the port like this.
12:19And, again, just another magnificent way for the family and your friends to come down and see these wonderful tall
12:27ships
12:27and great hulls, the military vessels.
12:30Boy, it seems like it reminds me of back in 1976 when I was just a mere lad, a very
12:37young lad,
12:38when the ships were sailing into New York Harbor.
12:41It's going to be that kind of thing, like almost, but not all at the same time, right?
12:45That's correct.
12:46You'll have, you know, we basically have used every bit of dock space along the east bank
12:51from Pullen Avenue all the way up to the Mississippi River Bridge for docking these magnificent ships.
12:59And, again, it's the beginning of the commemoration.
13:02So we are the inaugural port.
13:03The ships will leave our city on June 1st and head up the east coast and be seen in Norfolk
13:10and then Baltimore, New York for July 4th for a very large celebration of many, many, many more ships
13:17and then end in Boston, Massachusetts in the middle part of July.
13:21And we're just, you know, so honored that we were chosen to be one of these five ports
13:26to help celebrate our maritime history.
13:28It's a lot more than just the ships, right?
13:31Yeah, there's a lot of activity going on to ensure that not only the crew members are having a good
13:36time
13:36here in New Orleans, but also touching a number of exhibits that are happening in New Orleans
13:43to discuss the 250th anniversary of our nation.
13:46The Historic New Orleans Collection, the Louisiana State Museum, have wonderful exhibits discussing
13:53not only Louisiana, but New Orleans' impact on the birth of our nation.
13:58And then, of course, you know, you can't do it in any other city but New Orleans.
14:02We're going to have a seafood cook-off.
14:04We're going to be pairing the cook specialists or culinary specialists from each of the ships
14:08with a local chef.
14:09And the lieutenant governor has given us some Louisiana seafood to put into their menu recipes.
14:16And we're going to come up with some great dishes.
14:19And then they'll have some judges judging to see who did the best.
14:22And that'll be on Sunday down at Spanish Plaza at the Delacroix restaurant.
14:26Uh, the Kearsarge will start seeing guests on Thursday and Thursday afternoon after the
14:32tall ships are all safely, uh, docked, we'll, uh, or berthed, and we will start seeing some
14:37tours on the tall ships.
14:39And then, of course, all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
14:43They'll be, they'll be staged as they leave out on Monday with only one ship remaining till
14:48Tuesday, and that's the Libertad.
14:50Uh, but the blessing of the fleet will occur.
14:53It'll be a fitting way for us to do a symbolic blessing of all of the ships as they start
14:58departing.
14:58But that'll be another exciting opportunity to watch the ships as they leave New Orleans
15:03and head down the Mississippi River into the Gulf and then move on their way up the East
15:07Coast.
15:08As we get closer to Independence Day, there will be more events tied to the ships all along
15:13the East Coast.
15:14Now, stay tuned for more seaside voyages on this Weird News Roundup.
15:26Thank you for listening to this special presentation of Weird News from Odyssey's Something Offbeat.
15:33When I think about risks associated with summer, I think about getting a really bad sunburn
15:39or blisters, maybe sharks and, unfortunately, violent crimes.
15:44But I have to say, umbrellas have never crossed my mind.
15:48That's until I heard this story while listening to the Dana and Parks show out of Odyssey Station
15:54KMBZ in Kansas City.
15:56I have to warn you, if you have kids with you or anyone sensitive, this upcoming description
16:02is quite graphic.
16:04A story here from the New York Post.
16:07A female diner was killed in a freak accident.
16:11Oh, we have to talk about this.
16:13In front of her family.
16:15Ugh.
16:15When an umbrella flew through the air and severed the artery in her neck, according to authorities
16:22in South Carolina, Dana Weinger, 56 years old, was eating Saturday with her husband and other
16:30family members when she was killed at the Driftwood Grill Home of Lazy Gator in Somerton,
16:36South Carolina.
16:38Quoting here from the corner, it was a strong, strong wind like a microburst that came through
16:44and not just the umbrella, it knocked all the furniture and other debris came onto where
16:49they were sitting.
16:51I might want to bring this back a little later in the program and here's why.
16:54While rare, I no longer trust those umbrellas.
16:58Not on a beach, not on a patio.
17:01Oh, yeah.
17:02One of the things, if you've ever worked in a restaurant atmosphere, one of the things most
17:07people don't realize is how extraordinarily heavy those umbrellas are.
17:15That being said, in high winds, this is not anywhere near the first time this has happened,
17:19Scott.
17:20It happens in restaurants.
17:21It happens on the beach.
17:23I don't know what the answer is, if there's even a slight chance for a gust to win in the
17:27forecast.
17:27That's why you'll see signs at restaurants that say you must ask for staff assistance
17:32to raise the umbrella.
17:34Right.
17:34I was at a rooftop bar over the weekend, yesterday afternoon, and it was insanely windy.
17:40And I remember when I used to work at Panera, if the umbrellas were even moving slightly,
17:46like if there was enough wind to just kind of rotate them, we would go and take them down.
17:51And it was, I think, four umbrellas in a row, and we had the very last one, and they were
17:56swaying back and forth.
17:57I just stood up and held onto it, because I was not about to die, but nobody came to
18:02take them down.
18:03For fear that they would be lifted up and impale someone?
18:06Yeah.
18:07I mean, those systems aren't perfect.
18:08They're held in there with a screw-tight situation at the bottom.
18:13But the more they wiggle back and forth, that screw job that's holding it in gets looser
18:20and looser, and one upburst, and all of a sudden, your artery has been impaled in your
18:26neck by a flying umbrella.
18:28The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, because of this, now endorses a strict standard
18:35for these types of umbrellas, not only the manufacturing, but also the anchoring of this.
18:43And, like, if you look this up, Scott-
18:49I'm not laughing.
18:49I know, but there is some reporting that globally, there's around a million injuries and deaths
18:57a year because of these things.
18:59It's prolific enough that when you look into it, the first things that start popping up
19:05are the lawyer websites.
19:09Have you-
19:10For umbrella death.
19:11Scott, or severe injuries?
19:13You type in, can an umbrella, and the first thing Google brings up is, kill me.
19:18And the answer is?
19:19From the Herald Miami, and this is a few years ago, this common household item is killing
19:25millions of people.
19:26They are reporting two million deaths globally a year.
19:29No way.
19:29Scott, I swear to you, I saw the number two million quite a while.
19:33Quite a bit.
19:34And I couldn't help but notice, when we were in Cancun in early April, you know, you go
19:40to the pool, and there are the umbrellas, and they're all tied up and everything.
19:43If you even try to touch the umbrella, okay, to lift it up, to shade your little pool chairs,
19:56the staff will come running over.
19:58We got it, we got it, we got it.
19:59You are not allowed to touch the umbrellas yourself.
20:02It says the most dangerous type is the type found at the beach because their size and screw-like
20:08bases, meant to keep the umbrella upright in the sand, become deadly weapons on a windy
20:14day.
20:14According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are around 3,000 hospitalizations from
20:21umbrella accidents in the U.S. alone every year.
20:25To stay safe, people should keep large umbrellas closed when conditions are very windy, and make
20:32sure they're secured safely if outside.
20:35Next, we're heading out of the U.S. and making our way to the Dead Sea, a landlocked
20:41salt lake between Jordan and Israel in the Middle East.
20:45In recent years, the Dead Sea has been getting drier and smaller.
20:50A decade ago, the BBC reported that it was already shrinking at an alarming rate.
20:56Just this week, CNN reported that it recedes about four feet every year.
21:01Here's the Adam and Jordana show out of Odyssey Station WCCO News Talk in the Twin Cities with
21:08more.
21:09The lowest, David, what's the word I'm looking for?
21:12It's like the lowest point below sea level on the world.
21:15Below sea level on the planet.
21:18On the 1,400 feet below sea level.
21:21It's also like a mountain, like-
21:22Like down.
21:23Inverted.
21:24Yeah.
21:24So that's right.
21:25It's one of the world's saltiest water bodies.
21:29Ten times saltier than the ocean.
21:31It makes the water there, if you've ever been, I've been many times to the Dead Sea, you can
21:36float in the water and you don't have to, not on top, and you can sit in it, basically.
21:41And you can read a newspaper with your hands and have your feet out of the water.
21:46Yeah, because it's so salty that you become buoyant.
21:49That's right.
21:49It is.
21:50It's so dense.
21:51It is really an extraordinary experience.
21:54And now, I'm reading this morning that it's dying.
21:58The Dead Sea is shrinking.
22:01It's just drying up.
22:03And why?
22:04Well, human activities, climate change, they do take a heavy toll.
22:08But over the past five decades, its surface area has shrunk by roughly a third.
22:14And there's, you can see sinkholes.
22:17You can see, you know, obviously like salt pits at the bottom of it.
22:22I don't know if we can bring it back.
22:25And I'm sure this has happened many times during the Earth's history where you have bodies of
22:33water and then, of course, they dry up and they become something else.
22:37But every year, it is shrinking.
22:39So, I say this to you because I now am hearing about this for the first time.
22:43You should go and experience the Dead Sea and you should float in the Dead Sea.
22:49There are plans to try to save it, but sometimes we don't care about the environment and they're
22:57not always great plans.
22:58It is kind of a treasure.
23:00Like, it's the only place like it in the world.
23:02You floated in the Dead Sea, right?
23:04Yeah.
23:05Okay.
23:05Do you remember what that was like?
23:06I do.
23:06I just remember laying on my back.
23:08And like you said, you can have both of your feet and both your hands out of the water and
23:13your head, obviously.
23:14And you're not sinking.
23:15And it's an extraordinary feeling.
23:17And you can feel the water on your skin feels like distinctively different.
23:24So, yeah, it's an extraordinary thing.
23:27Do you think, Jordana, that it should be saved?
23:32Because the things they would have to do to save it, I mean, a lot of the water in that
23:36area is used for irrigation.
23:38So, that water could go there, but then you can't grow as many crops.
23:43And whatever else you do, I mean, the reality is the impacts of whatever you do to save a
23:49body of water like that also have other implications.
23:52So, like, how much should be put towards saving the Dead Sea?
23:57That's such a good question.
23:59A lot of it is man-made, the problems that we're having.
24:02You know, water that gets diverted to neighboring countries like Syria and Jordan and Israel,
24:07you know, from the Jordan River.
24:10By the way, the Jordan River is its main tributary.
24:12And because the Jordan River now has to, you know, is drinking water for people and crops,
24:20you know, obviously it's not feeding the Dead Sea as much.
24:24I don't know.
24:25Those people need water at some point.
24:28But I don't know if it should be.
24:31So, you say it's unlike any other place on Earth, which is partially true.
24:35However, there is a place in California called the Salton Sea that I visited that has a not
24:41dissimilar history.
24:43The Salton Sea has actually, like, been a sea and then drained several times in the last
24:49hundred years.
24:50And for a while...
24:53It comes back?
24:53Well, it comes back due to human intervention.
24:57Like, the Colorado River is diverted in so many different ways that it came back for a
25:00while and it was actually built up, I think it was in the 70s, as, like, kind of this resort
25:04area and people were, like, water skiing and hanging out there.
25:07But then it started to get saltier and saltier and saltier and shrink and shrink and shrink.
25:11And now if you go there, you can still visit the Salton Sea today.
25:14It's shrinking.
25:16You see the evidence of all of these resorts that used to be there that are just in decay.
25:20And it's just a place that's been forgotten.
25:23And people, like, it's no longer a place anyone lives or goes.
25:26And it's just a place that used to be this beautiful lake and has been abandoned.
25:31And is that what the Dead Sea is going to become?
