00:09direct-to-device satellite connectivity which would let regular smartphones link to satellites
00:14in places with weak or no mobile signal. Basically, your phone is not connecting to a cell tower on
00:19the ground that might be blocked by mountains or dense forests but with a satellite. It could be
00:24a game changer for emergencies in remote areas where regular mobile signals don't work.
00:29But while emergency satellite communication is free, everyday usage for certain applications
00:34come at a cost. Trials are already happening in the US, Canada, Australia and Europe. Users can
00:39already send SOS signals in distressed situations. But India is moving slowly. Why? Even though TRAI
00:46claims mobile connectivity of over 90%, rural areas in India still face connectivity issues.
00:51Smartphone makers like Apple and Google want clearer rules from the telecom-regulated TRAI,
00:56especially around India-specific manufacturing demands as per media reports.
01:01TRAI hasn't clarified whether India will use mobile frequencies or open dedicated satellite
01:06bands. For now, the Department of Telecommunications is still informally evaluating the tech as many
