00:00Whether they involved a truck trying its best not to be blown to smithereens,
00:04iconic characters coming horrendously close to saying goodbye for good,
00:09or prehistoric menaces stepping into the kitchen for the very first time,
00:13this is WhatCulture and here are the most stressful movie scenes of all time.
00:18A silent birth, a quiet place.
00:21Take that intense scenario of a mother pushing out their baby,
00:24add in a terrifying alien creature that murders anything that makes even the slightest of sounds,
00:29and you have a recipe for a truly mesmerizing slash horrifying scene.
00:34That's precisely what occurred during John Krasinski's first A Quiet Place picture.
00:39From the moment Evelyn's waters break, every second that follows feels like an agonizing lifetime.
00:44Things then go from bad to excruciating as Abbott only goes and pierces her foot
00:49on the gigantic nail protruding from one of the basement steps.
00:53That step on Lego x1000 perfectly sets the stressful stage for the arrival of the aforementioned
00:59sightless creature, with each bathtub contraction, gasp and cry as Evelyn prepares for the inevitable
01:05big push, possibly being her last as the frightening monster edges closer.
01:10Thankfully, her clever family had some fireworks handy to draw the blind villain away just in time,
01:15but that still couldn't completely erase the memories of one of the most nail-biting births in movie history.
01:20Howard's luck runs out, uncut gems.
01:23Just when gambling addict slash jeweler Howard Ratner's luck is seemingly finally in,
01:27life finds a way to throw him right back into a perilous scenario.
01:31And that's exactly what makes the final stretch of the 2019 Safdie Brothers Netflix thriller
01:36Uncut Gems so damn gripping.
01:38After choosing to bet the money that could have repaid his debt with the Mafia on a Boston Celtics
01:43game, Ratner foolishly decides to lock those same gangsters within his store's security doors.
01:49Oh boy.
01:49If the stress of witnessing a defiant Howard be dangled out of a window by the understandably
01:54incensed gangsters wasn't bad enough earlier, the subsequent minutes of a charming Ratner
01:59poking the bears within this particular cage becomes more unendurable with each passing moment.
02:04Then, after witnessing Howard's million-dollar gamble remarkably pay off, all of that dreadful
02:09tension appeared to have actually been worth it.
02:11But rather than celebrate with this volatile character, an infuriated Phil opts to blow a
02:16hole through the slippery Ratner's head out of nowhere.
02:19It's a masterful and believable swerve conclusion to what initially seemed like a surprising
02:25happy ending for this doomed figure, after the longest and most intense basketball game
02:30you'll ever see.
02:31The Close Call, Mission Impossible.
02:33Attempting to get his hands on an all-important list in Tom Cruise's first Mission Impossible
02:38outing, Ethan Hunt is lowered into a CIA vault that will set off a massive lockdown should a
02:43noticeable sound be made, or the temperature rise above a certain level.
02:47Oh, and if any weight hits the floor when CIA analyst William Donlow isn't present.
02:53Sure enough, just as Hunt looks to have somehow pulled off this suitably impossible mission,
02:57a rat entering the overhead duct results in disavowed IMF agent Franz Krieger almost dropping
03:03his pal onto the sensitive floor.
03:05The stress is real as Cruise jolts and winces inches off the ground while the temperature slowly
03:11rises.
03:11Knowing a single bead of sweat could also blow the whole operation.
03:15Thankfully, a droplet is caught and Hunt is yanked back out of trouble just in time.
03:20But Close Calls do not get much closer.
03:23Enter the Bear, Annihilation.
03:25After already losing one of their fellow Shimmer explorers during a shocking mutant bear attack
03:30earlier in 2018's sci-fi horror Annihilation, Gina Rodriguez's panicked Anya suddenly snaps
03:36after noticing her fingerprints are moving and decides to tie the rest of the team to chairs.
03:41However, just when it looked like Anya was about to start slicing up her defenceless former allies,
03:46a familiar voice wanders into the room.
03:49Cassie, presumed dead after that aforementioned bear encounter, seemingly calls out for someone
03:54to help her.
03:55But in a distressing turn of events, said freaky animal was simply using the dead geomorphologist's
04:00voice to lure in their prey.
04:02Anya takes the bait and an utterly petrifying few minutes ensue.
04:06From here, this grotesque, disfigured carnivore stalks the three frozen women, letting out
04:11the occasional horrendous Cassie, HELP ME, from its blood-soaked jaws.
04:16At any given moment, this nightmare fuel could very much add the rest of the squad to its
04:21list of victims.
04:22And it's those never-ending seconds of the creature slowly figuring out its next move
04:27that leave your heart sitting in your mouth right up to the point Anya makes a welcome
04:31return.
04:32The Toys in Serious Trouble
04:34Toy Story 3
04:35Anyone who was raised on the glorious adventures of Woody, Buzz and the gang in the 90s will
04:40likely tell you that 2010's Toy Story 3 contained one of the most traumatic movie moments of
04:45them all during its fiery climax.
04:48With the beloved clan of Toys actually going out of their way to save the film's main antagonist,
04:52Lotso, from being shredded to pieces when the team end up at a landfill, the purple villain's
04:57betrayal moments later is even harder to swallow.
05:00Leaving the cowboy and his mates on the conveyor belt, dragging them towards a toy-ending incinerator,
05:05few will ever forget the stress that was felt watching Bullseye trying to wiggle away from
05:10a fiery death.
05:11The poor guy.
05:12Hands were held, tears began to flow.
05:15Surely it couldn't all end like this?
05:16Of course it didn't.
05:18The faithful claw yanked them out of danger in the nick of time.
05:21But your childhood being dangled over a burning fire for a while there was about as stressful
05:25a cinematic experience as they come.
05:28Crossing the Bridge, Sorcerer
05:29The late William Friedkin's 1977 thriller, Sorcerer, tells the story of four men who find
05:35themselves in a South American village, with each of them eventually helping to move some
05:39dynamite from one location to another.
05:42Sounds simple enough?
05:43The only problem is that said explosives are sweating and are rather unstable, meaning
05:48that even the slightest jarring movement could set off the dynamite.
05:52So the squad set out on a 200 plus mile journey in two trucks.
05:56What could go wrong?
05:57Well, during this extremely dangerous endeavor, the two vehicles end up caught in the middle
06:02of a massive thunderstorm.
06:03And if that didn't already make carefully driving these two highly explosive trucks somewhat
06:08difficult, the fact they were then faced with having to make their way across a pretty
06:12flimsy bridge, swiftly turned a hard job into a seemingly impossible one.
06:16Even Ethan Hunter'd struggle.
06:18Every inch the heavy machinery travels along the rickety and slippery surface sends a shiver
06:23up your spine.
06:24Then after watching Roy Scheider incredibly get across the death trap, you're then treated
06:28to the other half of the unit going through the whole ordeal again.
06:32Hans Lander enters the farm, Inglourious Bastards.
06:36Unleashing a masterclass intention, Quentin Tarantino gets Inglourious Bastards started with
06:41the arrival of the iconic Colonel Hans Lander, as the officer stops by the Lepidit farm for
06:47a glass of milk and a quick smoke.
06:49If only that were the truth.
06:51Instead, as the tension ever so slowly rises with the reveal of Lander being on the lookout
06:56for a Jewish family known as the Dreyfusses, it soon becomes clear that Denis Menoshe's
07:01Perrier Lepidit has been lying about what he knows about them.
07:04They're actually sitting right beneath the floorboards as they speak, adding a whole new
07:09layer of intolerable stress to the interrogation.
07:12After much deceptively charming and tense discussion, Lander finally offers Lepidit one last
07:17chance to confess in order to keep his own family safe.
07:20And as Perrier's silence grows more deafening, Lander precisely peels back the lies, asking
07:26his host to point out where they're hiding below them.
07:29While you dare to believe there's a world where Perrier could outsmart such a ruthless
07:33and clinical SS officer throughout, Lander was simply waiting for his moment to strike during
07:39the stressful opening, likely knowing all along that what he was looking for was literally
07:43right underneath his nose.
07:45The bathtub moment, what lies beneath?
07:47Robert Zemeckis' chilling psychological horror, What Lies Beneath, contains another
07:52bathtub moment that is guaranteed to leave you feeling all kinds of stressed out.
07:57In the wake of being paralysed by her husband, Norman, not long after he admitted to killing
08:01the woman he was having an affair with, Michelle Pfeiffer's Claire Spencer is placed in a tub
08:06by said hubby.
08:07Here, the doctor proceeds to fill the container with water, as Claire can do nothing but watch
08:12on, completely frozen.
08:14As the water rises, so do the stress levels.
08:17Not even Norman knocking himself out after seeing the ghost of the murdered Madison,
08:21or Claire finally regaining the ability to move her foot, can stop the rapidly falling
08:26liquid from submerging the rest of her immobile body.
08:29And accidentally breaking the chain with her escape attempts, seemingly acts as the excruciating
08:34nail in the liquid coffin.
08:35But just as Claire looks to be done for, the shower head knocked into the bath by the slipping
08:40Norman comes to the rescue.
08:42Pulling it just enough to nudge the tap and slow down the water, Claire finally drains
08:47her aquatic tomb with one last plug pull, and both herself and the audience are given the
08:51opportunity to catch their breath.
08:54The velociraptors arrive in the kitchen, Jurassic Park.
08:57Forced to sprint into one of the park's kitchens as the two realise they're not alone mid-feast,
09:02Tim and Lexi Murphy soon learn the hard way just how clever Jurassic Park's velociraptors
09:07actually are.
09:08Every panicked scurry or fearful gasp feels like it could be the catalyst for another
09:13shocking dino dinner, with both the impressive CGI and practical versions of the pair of
09:18vicious killing machines, fully convincing you that one accidental sound could bring this
09:23chaotic ride to a tragic end for the youngsters.
09:26The stressful and entirely iconic moment, Tim almost ends up getting caught by a sniffing
09:31monster, before Lexi successfully just about distracts the two murderous beasties with a
09:36clever reflection trick alone, is Spielberg at his marvellous best?
