Parola fire evacuees lament cramped, unsanitary conditions in shelters

Residents displaced by the Parola Compound fire decry the poor living conditions in evacuation centers, citing unsanitary restroom facilities and cramped spaces on May 27, 2026. Rosalina Malabarbas, a 56-year-old baker, told the Manila Times that living conditions in the Delpan Evacuation Center have become difficult, particularly due to poorly maintained restrooms. She added that they are left to clean the bathroom all on their own despite having barely salvaged any belongings from the fire. She also said families have been forced to stay in cramped quarters, with around 5 to 6 families sharing a single room in the evacuation center. The fire on May 23—which escalated to Task Force Charlie—displaced 2,134 families. About 500 families are currently staying at the Delpan Evacuation Center.
