00:00We begin with big breaking news tonight out of the district.
00:02We are getting reports now that several shots were fired near the White House this evening.
00:06Fox News reports it was a male gunman armed with a pistol who opened fire around 6 p.m.
00:11At this hour, we know Secret Service shot a person and law enforcement say that they also shot a bystander.
00:17Both are in critical condition at this hour.
00:19A lockdown at the White House was lifted in just the last hour.
00:22Regina Yurita is live near that scene now as we learn more.
00:26Regina, I know you've been on scene for quite a while.
00:27What can you tell us?
00:30Yeah, well, Sidney, you can still see the large police presence right behind me.
00:35This is on Pennsylvania Avenue and 18th Street.
00:37This area still blocked off.
00:39We have a perimeter line, and this is really as far as we can go.
00:43So we have Secret Service right in front of us, MPD, as well as the FBI.
00:47They're all coordinating with each other to try to get more information of what happened.
00:51But again, the large police presence coming after reports of shots fired outside the White House.
00:56We know President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time that shots were heard.
01:01As of right now, limited information.
01:03We're still trying to get details confirmed from authorities.
01:06But Fox News is reporting an individual fired gunshots at least three times outside the White House.
01:12The Secret Service apparently returned a fire.
01:16Fox News also reporting that another person was hit somewhere between the gunfire exchange.
01:21And as mentioned, there's also reports that the bystander, as well as the shooter, are in critical condition.
01:29On social media, FBI Director Kash Patel, he posted that he would update the public as soon as they're able
01:36to.
01:36But, Sidney, we also know that journalists were working there at the time when they heard gunshots.
01:41They were told by authorities to seek shelter as the White House was placed on lockdown.
01:46Keep in mind, this is all unfolding just a few blocks from the White House, an area where we see
01:51tourists, residents walking, especially on Memorial Day weekend.
01:54So it's still unclear how many bystanders were in that area when those shots were fired.
01:59But definitely a scary experience for that person that is in critical condition.
02:04Of course, the people who were there to hear those gunshots and possibly witness what happened.
02:11We spoke with tourists who were walking to see the White House, and they were met with this.
02:16Scary, I didn't understand what happened, and then I understand that it was shutting, and they closed the White House.
02:24It's very scary.
02:25Tons of cars, of police cars just running, and also a couple of, like, ambulances just everywhere, like, going from
02:36there.
02:37And then we started walking back to our hotel, and we saw, like, they closed all the streets.
02:46And, of course, we just got sound from those tourists, but I'm telling you, just here in this area, we
02:51continue to see people stopping by to get more information of what happened.
02:56As soon as we hear more details, we'll be sure to share it with you.
02:59This is still an ongoing investigation.
03:01Sydney?
03:02Regina, as you mentioned, I understand that that lockdown at the White House has since been lifted.
03:07What can you say about sort of the level of urgency that exists around you?
03:12Obviously, we can see several law enforcement officers.
03:15Do they seem to be on guard, be alert?
03:18Do they seem more relaxed at this hour than they did when you first arrived?
03:24Yeah, I mean, definitely seeing the amount of police officers here is a good sign.
03:29They are definitely on guard just to know what happened.
03:33They have to remain that way.
03:35But we're not seeing people alarmed because they're seeing that police seem to have it under control.
03:40And, of course, we're still trying to get confirmation.
03:42But really seeing this level of law enforcement and the way that they're handling this,
03:48it does bring some relief to people who are walking here because they know that as long as Secret Service,
03:54FBI and MPD are here to handle anything that is in this area, they can feel some sort of safety.
04:00And so that's really the main message that, you know, some of the Secret Service and police officers
04:06are trying to tell people here who might be alarmed.
04:09And just to mention, I mean, this just comes weeks after the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
04:13So really, definitely some alarm and, of course, concern just from what's been happening the past couple of weeks.
04:22Sydney?
04:24Hi, thank you, Regina.
04:25We will check back in with you soon.
04:27And as Regina mentioned, this, of course, comes nearly a month after that shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.
