00:00I'm having a great time with you, Sean.
00:02This is definitely the last time I'm ever doing this.
00:04Oh.
00:05Oh.
00:13Hey, what's going on, everybody?
00:14For First We Feast, I'm Sean Evans, and you're watching Hot Ones.
00:17It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.
00:19And today we're joined by Mr. Beast.
00:21He's an entertainment industry juggernaut who's built an empire on challenges,
00:24survival stunts, enormous cash prizes, philanthropy, and much more.
00:28Feastables is his snack brand, and his record-shattering competition series is back for Season 2.
00:33Check out Beast Games, now airing on Amazon Prime Video.
00:36Jimmy, welcome to the show.
00:37Thanks for having me.
00:38Hey, guys.
00:39I am terrified because I don't normally eat spicy food, but it should be a lot of fun.
00:43Yeah, I'd imagine that there's probably a reason why this has taken more than a decade for the two of
00:48us to get together.
00:49We meet, what, like twice a year at conferences or events, and we're always like, yeah, we should do it.
00:54And, uh, oh, half the reason is because I'm terrified of the hot wings, and the other half is because
00:58we're both busy.
00:59So I decided we could make it work.
01:21Okay, I start here.
01:23Okay, Garlic Delight.
01:25Cheers.
01:29Okay, not too bad.
01:35I mean, my mouth's burning a little bit.
01:38I'm concerned what the hell is number five if that's number one, but so far we're good.
01:42Locked in, baby.
01:43Yeah.
01:44So psychology is woven into the fabric of Beast Games with dilemmas that mirror classic ethical debates, like the trolley
01:51problem, which was featured in season one.
01:53Yeah.
01:53What, if anything, have you learned about human behavior hosting this show?
01:57Like, are there any patterns you've observed?
01:59You would think people would be way more ruthless than they are.
02:02That's what I've noticed watching the video.
02:04Like, the way people sacrifice themselves for the team, it happens much more often than I'd expect.
02:08Exactly, yeah.
02:09And so, like, we have the largest cash prize in history they're competing for, yet sometimes people do something that
02:14worsens their odds to, you know, help a friend they just met two weeks ago.
02:17And so, honestly, Beast Games kind of brings out my faith in humanity quite a bit because I'm like, wow,
02:22that person just turned down a million dollars for these strangers?
02:25And so, I don't know, but there's also a double-sided of it because they know the show's going to
02:29get tens of millions of views, and so they're also worried about how they'll be portrayed on it.
02:32So, it's not also just, you know, helping people out, but it's, so it's interesting to see all these dilemmas
02:36and to see what people care about more than others.
02:39And then the really funny part is seeing, like, on TikTok after we drop these things, everyone's like, nah, I
02:44would have just taken a million dollars.
02:45And so, it's kind of funny because that's what people say, but then when they're in that spot, they always
02:49act differently.
02:55Okay, let's do it.
03:01Okay.
03:03Tastes about to warm.
03:05Okay, so you know.
03:06Yeah, there you go.
03:08I should swallow faster.
03:10Sometimes you just have to let the sauce speak to you a little bit.
03:14You know, they can be a little misleading at first.
03:16Mm-hmm.
03:17From burying yourself alive to spending days on end in solitary confinement, what's the most you've ever pushed yourself in
03:24the noble pursuit of entertainment?
03:26So, there's three things I hate.
03:27I really hate being in the sun because I'm white.
03:30I burn like crazy.
03:31I don't know.
03:32I share the experience.
03:33Yeah, exactly.
03:34I understand the plight.
03:34Yeah.
03:34And so, when we did a video of seven days on a deserted island, it was basically everything I hate,
03:39like being sleep deprived.
03:40And then I also really hate insects.
03:42Like, having bugs bite you is annoying.
03:44And so, on day two on seven days on a deserted island, I woke up after sleeping on the beach.
03:48I didn't know sand fleas were a thing.
03:50Oh, yeah.
03:51And my leg is just covered with thousands of little—I thought I was going to die.
03:55I was like, what?
03:56Like, everywhere from my waist down, just like bug bites everywhere.
04:00I mean, I couldn't see my skin.
04:02There's so much.
04:02And then I was like slightly sunburned.
04:04And I was really hot.
04:05And I was like, nah, I'm out.
04:07I'm out.
04:07So, I quit.
04:08It's one of the few times I've ever quit a challenge.
04:10And I was just like, no.
04:12We got to go back.
04:13And we went back out there, and we did it.
04:14But that first time, like, it was the most miserable I've ever felt in my life.
04:22My nose is, like, dripping snot.
04:24I don't know if that's a side effect, but let's keep going.
04:27Oh, the producers must not like me.
04:29That's a lot of sauce.
04:31Okay, is this what Jennifer Anderson and everyone had?
04:34This is the white hop mustard sauce.
04:38Okay.
04:39So, I like the taste.
04:43I'll wait.
04:44It really hits when you breathe, so I'm going to breathe.
04:46Mm-hmm.
04:47Oh, yeah.
04:48Oh, yeah.
04:48Okay.
04:50Hit the milk.
04:51Mm-hmm.
04:52It's time.
04:53Okay.
04:54So, you're known for being a mentor to countless creators on YouTube and not gatekeeping the
04:59lessons that you've learned along the way.
05:01So, if you'll humor me, I want to pull up the mock-up of what we expect your thumbnail to
05:07look like for this video.
05:08Do you have any notes for Editor Mari?
05:11Um, I do think the background's a little noisy, especially because, like, if you were to shrink
05:16that thumbnail down for a phone, wow, my tongue is actually burning.
05:19I need to stop letting this touch my tongue.
05:21Um, it would be kind of hard to tell.
05:25Um, so, maybe just a little less noisy background, but for the most part, this is what people
05:31have come to expect from your brand.
05:32So, it'd be weird if you deviated too much, to be honest.
05:35If there was going to be an evolution or change, I think it would have to stem from you because
05:38people can tell when it's authentic to you.
05:40Hot Ones is you.
05:41You know, there's no Hot Ones without Sean and Vice versa.
05:43So, it's like, if it doesn't come from you and the audience doesn't feel that, they're
05:48just going to revolt.
05:49So, I could say whatever.
05:50But honestly, whatever I say, if you actually did it, it would just piss them off.
05:53You know what I mean?
05:59Okay, habanero and peach.
06:00That's interesting.
06:06And this, to me, is the first kind of step.
06:10I can tell because this is also the first one that's actually making me cry.
06:13Yeah, and then this is where I'll tell you, be careful around the eyes.
06:16You know, you'll have this instinct.
06:18I'm just going to put this over here and grab a new napkin.
06:20Yeah, we have lots of napkins over there.
06:21Yeah, thank you.
06:22Damn, that one is full of snot.
06:26My airways are opening up.
06:28I can breathe.
06:29Clearing the sinuses.
06:31This is nice.
06:31Apparently, I'm sick.
06:33I didn't know.
06:34Do you have a take on the way the legacy chocolate giants have reacted to upstarts like yours?
06:39And are you at all motivated by rivalry?
06:42A big part of Feastables is there's over 1.5 million kids in illegal child labor.
06:46And Cote of Arangana, where almost all the world's cacao comes from, it's in West Africa.
06:51And so I actually talked to a lot of other big chocolate companies.
06:54And they're just kind of like, yeah, child labor is just how you get cacao.
06:57You know, there's nothing you can do about it.
06:58So anyways, I'll save the long story.
07:00But that's why with Feastables, we pay all our farmers the living income reference price.
07:03We use fair trade beans.
07:04But in exchange, they have to let us audit and remediate the child labor on the farm.
07:07So we do sourcing completely different than big chocolate companies do.
07:11So I imagine they're not the happiest because, you know, now that we're doing that,
07:15we're proving that you can, you know, ethically source the cacao.
07:18You know, it shows that they could if they wanted to.
07:20They just don't.
07:25Would you believe me if I told you we're at the halfway mark?
07:28Thank God.
07:31Oh, I took way too big of a bite.
07:33Oh, God.
07:34We're in it, baby.
07:35Yeah.
07:36I need smaller bites.
07:37Oh, yeah.
07:38Yeah.
07:38That one.
07:38I think that was the step up, to be honest.
07:41Like, I've taken like three hits of this and it's not going down.
07:43Three hits.
07:44Yeah, yeah.
07:44You've been.
07:45Yeah.
07:45The chocolate hits.
07:47But not enough.
07:48Not on these.
07:50And then I would suggest maybe slowing down because sometimes the milk problem that you
07:56create for yourself can be worse than the hot sauce problem.
07:58Oh, I would rather have diarrhea than your face.
08:01Oh, then my tongue be burning.
08:02I'm just speaking from experience.
08:04That's future me's problem.
08:05Me right now needs the tongue not to burn.
08:07Right.
08:07Okay.
08:08Then let's continue to be instinctive.
08:11Grab the jug.
08:12Yeah, I just, I don't know.
08:13Who needs these glasses?
08:14I'm just joking.
08:15I'm going to eat a lot.
08:16I hate spicy stuff, but I'm doing this because I love you and I think this will be fun, but
08:20oh my gosh.
08:26That was only five?
08:32Too quick.
08:35And swallow.
08:36Okay.
08:37So you built this empire on escalation, you know, bigger prizes, more money, larger scale.
08:43Do you ever think about the ceiling of that or is the constantly accelerating spectacle
08:49the thing that's fun for you?
08:51Oh, um, yeah.
08:53So we do always what?
08:55Wow.
08:56Speaking while your tongue is burning is interesting.
08:59We do always one up everything.
09:01But the thing I think most people look at like one upping yourself is like linear.
09:06Like the only way to do it is to give away more money or do a bigger set, which we
09:11do quite
09:11a few times, you know, increase your prize pool or build big, build bigger sets.
09:16Um, you're right.
09:17It is getting harder to talk.
09:18Oh, people have seen me give away a bunch of money, a bunch.
09:22They've seen me build big sets a ton.
09:24Now the thing that will keep them coming back because eventually we'll get numb to those
09:27two things.
09:28I think it's good stories that make you feel something.
09:31And, uh, that's been my main focus.
09:33And that's like theoretically a lever over here.
09:35If that makes sense.
09:36I'm following.
09:37I'm following, you know, no matter what you're going through eloquent in the fog of war over
09:43here, Jimmy.
09:45Um, let me just grab a new napkin.
09:47Yeah.
09:48Keep them in rotation.
09:55Ooh, I like that name.
10:02How dramatic am I compared to other people?
10:04I like these kinds of episodes where somebody's pushed to the brink, to be honest.
10:08I really, um, I don't handle spicy stuff.
10:11How many school bills is that?
10:13So this is another step, you know, like now we're approaching, you know, now we're deep.
10:18There's sauce in my milk, you know, and a lot going on.
10:25So I once heard you talk about how painful it is to see people drop out of school or quit
10:31their jobs to pursue content full time.
10:34Yep.
10:34How do you think about the balance between the ambition of chasing one's dream and the
10:38reality that such a small percentage of the people who try break through?
10:43I think that in my case, I, bro, the more I talk, the more I break.
10:50Oxygen on the fire.
10:52Do you want some ice cream?
10:54Yes.
10:54Ice cream would be here.
10:55Come on in.
10:56Oh, she was ready.
10:57We are always ready.
10:58We're always ready.
10:59You knew that was coming.
11:01Hmm.
11:02If I think about let this sit on my tongue, I can't answer the question.
11:04Yeah.
11:05Give me a shot.
11:06Okay.
11:06This is good.
11:07I can, I'm good.
11:08I don't feel it.
11:09It was either I wanted to be a YouTuber.
11:11I didn't care if it's that important to you and you're willing to make all those sacrifices
11:14and willing to really go all in, then I don't think it's as crazy.
11:18And most people don't want it that bad.
11:20And in that case, I don't recommend you take the risk.
11:22Like only take the risk where you could potentially, I mean, truthfully ruin your life.
11:26If it really means that much to you where you can't envision yourself being happy unless
11:29you achieve it.
11:30And I think maybe you'd agree with this too, but like being on the inside of it, unless
11:35you love it, it ain't worth it anyway.
11:37Exactly.
11:37That's the other thing.
11:38Like, unless you really, really love what you do and love creating content, like you're
11:42going to, if you were in my shoes, you would get trapped in a hell accidentally.
11:47Like this.
11:48Right.
11:48Yeah.
11:49You could be tethered to this seat eating scorching hot chicken wings for over a decade.
11:54All right.
11:54Let's keep going.
11:55And including this sauce, this is Da Bomb Beyond Insanity.
11:59Oh God.
11:59I don't, bro.
12:00I don't like the symbol.
12:01I'm sorry.
12:01I screwed that bottle.
12:03Yeah.
12:03I don't like the symbol on this.
12:04This scares me.
12:10Am I going to be okay?
12:14Okay.
12:15Prepare mentally.
12:15All right.
12:16Let's do it.
12:20Oh God.
12:21Why are you showing your hawk?
12:23I wanted a small bite.
12:26Oh no.
12:28So I was watching an interview that you did with Nick Serto.
12:31Yep.
12:31Where you talked about how in high school you would fuck people up and speed up.
12:35Oh yeah, I would.
12:36Well, you know what?
12:36That's easy to do with a clear mind.
12:38Try doing that after you've eaten a gauntlet of scorching hot chicken wings.
12:41So if you'll humor me, I have a fast math pop quiz for you.
12:45Go for it.
12:46All right.
12:46If DJ Khaled taps out after the third wing on the hot ones gauntlet, what percentage of
12:53the lineup remains uneaten?
12:56Why is your hot sauce on us?
12:5860, 70%.
12:59Bang, bang, bang.
13:00You're renting a studio for $5,125 per day.
13:05If you shoot there for 12 days straight, what does your rental bill come out to?
13:13Bro, I've never felt my tongue this way.
13:16I'm feeling nerves on my tongue I didn't know I had.
13:19I'm sorry.
13:20I don't know what you said.
13:21Okay.
13:22You don't have to ask again.
13:23It's fine.
13:24You have 88 chocolate bars to split equally in 11 care packages.
13:29How many chocolate bars in each care package?
13:31Eight.
13:32That's easy.
13:32You got that.
13:33Ah, my tongue is burning.
13:36You've done a brand deal that pays you 23% of $650,000 in back-end revenue.
13:44What's your check for?
13:47Hold up.
13:50What's 2% of 5?
13:52$550,000.
13:53That is $1,000.
13:56Two.
13:57Wait, you said $20,000?
14:02$130,000?
14:04Oh, wait.
14:04But you said the $3,000?
14:05$100,000.
14:07I don't know.
14:08Close.
14:09$149,500.
14:12How are you feeling?
14:14You can tap if you want to.
14:17Bro.
14:18Come on.
14:19You think I'm going to tap?
14:20One second.
14:20Sorry.
14:28It's only two more.
14:29Well said.
14:33This next one, if you're ready, is the Smoked Squash Reaper X.
14:38Bro, it's coming back.
14:40Oh, whatever.
14:42Whatever.
14:42Let's do it.
14:45Is my tongue red?
14:47It looks actually a little white, to be honest.
14:49I think it's the ice cream.
14:50The ice cream.
14:51Okay.
14:53I'm sorry, guys.
14:54This interview is not going to get any better.
14:56Yeah, I'm sorry.
15:05From a $100,000 sundae to a $70,000 pizza, you've tried some of the most expensive foodstuffs in the
15:12world.
15:13Uh-huh.
15:13Which ultra-lux menu item was most worth its outrageous price tag?
15:18None of them.
15:19None of them.
15:19Bro.
15:20It's crazy because a $5 smash burger will taste better than a $70,000 golden pizza with black truffles on
15:26it.
15:27I do not like expensive food.
15:30It's weird.
15:31You're not missing out at all.
15:33So, the more expensive, like caviar, I don't like caviar at all.
15:39It's just like fish eggs.
15:40Who?
15:42Oh, my gosh.
15:44I need more ice cream.
15:49What were you talking about?
15:52All right, Mr. Beast.
15:54You can call me, Jimmy.
16:00I don't want to.
16:02We'll keep it out.
16:06Bro, is smoke coming out of my mouth?
16:08No, but in post, we can make it happen.
16:10How long does it last?
16:11You know what?
16:12And this is the truth.
16:16After you leave the studio, for 20 minutes, you'll be floating a little bit, but then it'll clear, and you'll
16:22almost feel like you could do it again.
16:24Okay?
16:25I am starting to feel it in my stomach.
16:26My gosh.
16:28Hey.
16:29There's a lot of ice cream, a lot of milk.
16:30Okay.
16:32All right, I just feel burning and pain.
16:35You don't have to either.
16:36No.
16:37I'm not quitting.
16:41Bro, I swear.
16:42People are going to put me in, like, TikTok edits beside other celebrities, and they're going to be like, oh,
16:45it's not that bad.
16:47Please tell me most people struggle.
16:49No matter what you're going through, no matter how silly you feel, way crazier things have already happened on this
16:55show.
16:55You know, there's a long legacy.
16:57There's a long history.
16:58The TikTok edits are just going to find the one person that's like, oh, that's not that bad.
17:02They're not going to put me in.
17:03Don't think about the TikTok edits at a time like this.
17:05Because that's what I live with.
17:07I live with a fucking TikTok.
17:09We're one bite away.
17:09We're one bite away from getting there.
17:10Make you fun of me.
17:11We're one bite away from getting there.
17:13What they'll do is they'll admire the determination to get through this.
17:17Oh, you think that's what they're going to do?
17:18Despite the odds.
17:19Oh, yeah.
17:19I'm shaping.
17:20Totally.
17:20That's what you guys are going to do.
17:21I'm shaping the narrative right now.
17:23That's what they're going to do.
17:23I'm shaping the narrative right now.
17:26I feel like I'm going to throw up.
17:28Let's do it.
17:35And with that, the wings of death are behind us.
17:38You have conquered the Hot Wins Gauntlet.
17:40And to close things out, you published a video called Hi, Me in 10 Years, where you talked
17:46to your future self, a 17-year-old, Jimmy Donaldson.
17:50Yeah.
17:50With a trillion Scovilles coursing through your veins.
17:53I'm wondering if you could send another message to your future self.
17:56And if you want, you can stare down the barrel of the camera.
17:59What would you tell Jimmy in 10 years if he's considering doing Hot Wins again?
18:06Don't.
18:06It's not worth it.
18:07It's not worth it.
18:08It's literally not worth it.
18:10Sean's cool.
18:13It's not worth it.
18:15And with that.
18:19I'm never eating spicy food again.
18:20You have taken on the Hot Wins Gauntlet and lived to tell the tale.
18:24Now, there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you.
18:27This camera, this camera, this camera.
18:28Let the people know what you have going on in your life.
18:36Well, I just dropped Beast Game Season 2.
