00:53air drivers on highway one push to get home for the holidays but stuck on a blind corner
01:10a disabled utility truck called to the scene it's a little bit of a sketchy job Jamie Davis see even
01:27here is not much shoulder right is on a mission to retrieve it okay let's go we're gonna be quicker
01:33too with swamper Martin Steffek that service truck has lost its back wheels it's on an off-ramp and on
01:42a bad corner with drivers racing by Jamie the road flare-up takes control of the traffic for me this
01:57job is all about safety we're on a bad corner you don't have good line of sight here
02:04no more more I'm going to oversee everything there that'll keep it
02:12okay let's go
02:16but on the narrow six foot shoulder dangerous you know in a 100 kilometer per hour zone
02:25drivers on the holiday rush they don't seem to slow down for us and they should move over
02:31close a close threat it's our lives too you know that matter very easily this truck could be hit by
02:39another truck coming around the corner oh my lord doesn't see it bang there's just gonna be flagging for a
02:48bit
03:14they're just at the off-ramp sir on highway one through hope
03:18so just take that one up as far as you can go just five minutes from his yard we're gonna
03:25block the
03:25whole off-ramp off Jamie and his team handle their own traffic control you can't see coming around that
03:33flying corner to remove a utility truck from a bad spot I want you to stay about right in here
03:42yeah but
03:43with no rear axle they can't lift it from the front in order to pick this thing up by the
03:49back end the
03:49tow trucks actually got to be facing the wrong way in traffic signaling to drivers ahead of the corner
03:55Jamie will block off the exit enabling his record to drive the wrong way down the off-ramp to the
04:04wreck
04:08okay you guys you can come up now with the off-ramp closed oh here we go long-haul expert

04:20drives against the flow in a 35-ton wrecker I could not hook up to the front of this vehicle
04:26because it's
04:27his rear that's gone I'm left with no choice I have to go the wrong way on the highway let's

04:36also pitching in tonight Jamie's latest recruit Maxim Chamberlain Norman there's not much thing that
04:44secure me right oh look at this guy wow but you never know if there's a transport that's gonna come
04:54and not gonna break safely in position gotta make sure she lines up they move quickly stop bring it
05:08back a little well to hook up and get off the highway okay stop yeah now go up a bit
05:20yeah we're in I'm good on my side you do yeah it's gonna be a tricky tricky haul with the
05:28wreck
05:28loaded up put the straps on yep ratchet straps lock it down you're good on your side we are good

05:52we got a little bit of a scary thing here to back up in traffic oncoming drivers okay so you're
06:00gonna follow me and back up and stay over that side continue to race by at over 100 kilometers an
06:06hour
06:07keep my lights off until I get to the other side yeah till you go to make the right turn

06:13a fairly tricky maneuver to do what we're doing here this isn't something we do every day well I've
06:20never done this way before you're ready to go there mark yep okay we're leaving now it's a very scary
06:29feeling going the opposite way on traffic

07:03near Revelstoke BC
07:06I heard there was a big wreck
07:10visibility is not great a bends towing 50 ton hurdles along Highway 1 with lead operator Mike
07:20topper track this section of highway is going to be a little bit foggy at times that doesn't help
07:26matters it's been a busy night up here tonight time recruits trying to keep up but there's only so
07:32much you can do on a day like this every available hand is out making sure the highway stays open
07:38Mike
07:39is the operations manager for the day-to-day functions in Revelstoke very focused highly skilled
07:46definitely the right guy just ahead a refrigeration trailer knocked clean off its hitch traveling
08:07eastbound the loaded semi lost traction crossing lanes decoupling as it crashed
08:17it's well in the ditch arriving at the site so Mike see here
08:26gets a peek at the trailers frozen goods french fries
08:36this is probably right off but we also need to get that cargo salvage as quickly as possible
08:41especially with a perishable load like this while he waits for an unload crew
08:49the highway's foreman is determined to clear the tractor their job is to make sure that the road is
08:56flowing as freely and smoothly as possible and we're in obstruction on that road right now
09:03oh yeah ready to start pulling here
09:11Mike winches with a line to the tractor's frame
09:18but the rear axles are deep in the ditch as I'm pulling I'm watching how the wrecks reacting I need
09:27to put down and re-rig somewhere better to get a better angle that's gonna be a little bit of
09:43a head
09:58I'm going to try and bring the tractor up without bending or breaking the frame right now the problem is
10:04just gonna be getting
10:05it to the road in one piece swapping a line to the far side makes for a more gentle lift
10:17it's all pretty good for a buggered up unit
10:20and Mike's quick thinking
10:25gets the damaged unit back on the road
10:28perfect
10:29they don't usually get folded up quite this bad
10:32but his tractor troubles are just getting started
10:36there's no really good way to tow a twisted truck like this
10:41it's really much choice
10:44how am I going to pick this up
10:49there's a lot of loose pieces a lot of loose trim loose plastic
10:53there you go
10:55in this case the frame is also bent and cracked
10:58my biggest concern right now is that if we go down the road that crack will get worse
11:03and we'll end up with us dropping the wreck on the highway
11:07adding to the pressure
11:09highways authorities urgently want the blocked lane clear
11:16this needs to be off the road
11:21so we're going to truss it up the best way we can to take it away
11:27right there
11:30with a 10 kilometer drive back to home base
11:33perfect
11:36oh yeah let's see if that's going to hold it
11:37Mike does what he can with the chains he's got
11:41are you taking to your yard or are you just going to dump it at the pullout

12:53now this is where it gets kind of dangerous

12:59Mark's wrecker will tow the wreck
13:01half a kilometer against traffic
13:04crossing at a nearby turnaround

13:11people ain't used to seeing a truck
13:13or any other vehicle
13:14coming towards them
13:16when they're going one way
13:17and I'm coming at them this way
13:20got a wrong way driver

18:29emptied the load of french fries
18:32must have taken them all day
18:33to unload that trailer

18:38think you're grabbing both axles

35:48this year we actually
35:49had the military reach
35:50out to us and they
35:51wanted to participate
35:52so they are here today

38:08toy drive is underway
38:12and with over 50 tow trucks
38:14from across bc
38:15wow that's a lot of trucks
38:18yeah
38:19it's their biggest
38:22and brightest to date
38:24all of us in the industry
38:26i think take pride in that
38:27it shows their dedication
38:29to helping people
38:31there's the army
38:32look at that
38:34it's even caught the attention
38:36all the kids
38:37of the big man himself
38:39i feel like i need some

38:47since

38:51i'm very proud to see them

39:11being able to see the trailer fold up
39:13is definitely a rewarding feeling
39:15santa will be leaving with his heaviest haul yet

40:38i've never seen a truck needing two tow-ups to get up a hill before
