00:00And in other topics, having to choose between eating lunch or dinner, that is the reality for millions of working
00:06families in the United States.
00:08According to a study by the Urban Institute, high gas prices and soaring inflation are driving an increasing number of
00:15U.S. citizens to seek alternatives to meet their basic food needs.
00:18Reporting from New York, our correspondent Henry Camelo has the details.
00:23In major U.S. cities, cities like this are becoming increasingly common.
00:30Long lines of people at food banks, desperate to find a way to put food on tables.
00:36The war with Iran and the skyrocketing cost of living mean that for millions of Americans, their paychecks simply aren't
00:44enough to make it to the end of the month.
00:48The price is going up for many working people, many non-working people, especially pensioners like myself.
00:55And it's a concern, it will last as long as there's instability in the world.
00:58I see, I noticed it's the price.
01:01For example, before like $4.99, now it's $9.99, it's $10.99.
01:05Yeah, it is increased.
01:07According to the most recent data from the Department of Labor, inflation in the month of May went up to
01:133.8 percent.
01:15A further increase is expected in the coming month.
01:19For economic analyst Louis Montes, the war against Iran has marked a turning point in the purchasing power of the
01:29working class, both in the United States and across the rest of the world.
01:35For example, you have the U.S. consumer has been severely impacted by this war.
01:42In this case, you have, for example, diesel, which is key to transport many of the goods that we consume.
01:51These are, they are, they have a direct impact on the U.S. consumers.
01:56Gas, as I previously mentioned, has gone up more than a dollar, 10 cents up to $1.50 in certain
02:03instances.
02:04You know, this is basically a direct impact on the economy.
02:08According to the AAA, the national average price per gallon for regular gasoline stands at $4.56, while diesel is
02:19at $5.65, more than double the price from a year ago.
02:25But for President Trump, neither the high inflation or the economic hardships Americans are enduring seems to matter.
02:34I don't think about American financial situation.
02:38I don't think about anybody.
02:39I think about one thing.
02:40You cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon.
02:43It's just beyond repulsive to hear that a president is not considering the well-being of the U.S. consumer
02:52just because he is trying to settle some political score or even for his own ego, a word that is
03:02hard.
03:02First of all, that it has not, that the goals of the war have not been declared, that he's not
03:07even able to call a war a war.
03:10He calls it an expedition and later plays around with semantics to call it a truce, to call it, you
03:17know, anything but the real thing, which is a war.
03:21While President Trump's priority remains focused on his international militaristic crusade intended,
03:28according to analysts to divert attention from such sensitive matters as his involvement in the Epstein files,
03:37millions of Americans who cast their votes based on the promise to make America great again,
03:43continue to stand in long lines, holding on to the sole hope that at least today, at this community food
03:50bank, the supplies will not run out.
