SpaceX’s Starship V3 delivered a dramatic finale during Flight 12 after successfully completing major mission objectives before exploding moments after splashdown in the Indian Ocean.

The massive megarocket launched from Starbase, Texas, reached space, deployed Starlink simulator satellites, survived intense reentry heating, and executed a controlled landing burn before erupting into a huge fireball on the ocean surface. SpaceX described the event as a planned “rapid unscheduled disassembly” to gather valuable test data.

Elon Musk and SpaceX engineers celebrated the mission as a major breakthrough for future NASA Artemis missions and long-term plans for Mars colonization despite the explosive ending.

00:00The new engine's lit.
00:07Oh!
00:12Amazing!
00:18Yeah, Starship doesn't fly like an airplane.
00:21It's a lot more like a skydiver.
00:25Yeah, you can see the aft flap there making minor corrections.
00:30Starship is turning for final approach to landing site.
00:32Look at that turn.
00:34There we go. Minor corrections and a full turn.
00:39Yeah, Starship doesn't fly like an airplane.
00:42It's a lot more like a skydiver.
00:45Full belly flop on the way down using those flaps similar to arms
00:49to help change the path of the air over you.
00:54Coming up real soon.
00:56Again, going for a landing burn,
00:58trying to light two of these Raptor sea level engines.
01:05Passing.
01:06Landing burn start up.
01:07Landing burn start up.
01:11Two engines lit.
01:18Successful flip.
01:19Successful flip.
01:25Bowie cam.
01:25Starship is laughing.
01:28Good show time.
01:33Oh!
01:47Amazing!
01:59Hopefully we've got...
02:00The ship is starting the RTLS banking maneuver.
02:06And that right there, so we're starting a banking maneuver
02:10and essentially what that is, is when we come back to Starbase
02:14or when we plan to come back to Starbase,
02:17the trajectory is designed so we'll essentially swing out
02:20over the gulf and do a swoop maneuver
02:23to then come back to the towers for catch.
02:26And so we are doing that exact same maneuver
02:32as we head towards our targeted splashdown in the Indian Ocean.
02:47That's good.
02:50Skills are failing now.
02:52All right.
02:52Here we go.
03:12We're standing by for Starship basically to serve the first Dodger Dogs
03:18to low Earth orbit.
03:28And one out the door.
03:34And from this view you can kind of see on the right side of the satellite
03:38you see some bright white spots.
03:40Those are our flashlights beneath them.
03:42And the camera is going to attempt to look back
03:44and image Starship's heat shield
03:47as it flies slowly away from the vehicle.
03:51And there it goes.
04:00Let there be light.
04:03Yeah, it almost looks like the light is just shining right at us there.
