A pod of around 50 short-finned pilot whales has been spotted near a pier in Hualien, giving local whale watchers a rare, close-up encounter. Marine experts note that while these deep-sea mammals reside permanently off Taiwan's east coast, it is rare to witness them "spyhopping" — a curious behavior where they lift their heads vertically out of the water like a periscope.
