00:00My dear heroes, I'm not sure what to make of this yet, but apparently there's a... in some multiverse
00:05A different Spider-Man than me?
00:07Yes, I took a look at his story to tell you whether it's even worth it or not.
00:13whether you should stick with the original Spider-Man.
00:15So, grab a drink, sit down comfortably, and here's my spoiler-free review of Spider-Noir.
00:27Yes, my dear heroes, the time has finally come.
00:30Spider-Noir, the new Spider-Man series from Prime Video, will launch on the streaming service on May 27, 2026.
00:39And yes, you don't have to wait week after week, no, you'll get all eight episodes on May 27th.
00:46And that's even in two versions.
00:48You can watch Spider-Noir, the new series with Nicolas Cage, in both color and black and white.
00:55Yes, that's roughly what it looks like. Only better.
00:58But with a different Spider-Man than me, namely Nicolas Cage.
01:03He also voiced/played Spider-Man Noir in the Miles Morales animated film series, and now...
01:10He plays him in live-action.
01:12However, this Spider-Man Noir is supposedly not the same.
01:18This might also be due to the fact that in the new series, Spider-Man isn't called Spider-Man, but Spider.
01:23and Peter Parker is not Peter Parker, but Ben Reilly.
01:27We'll discuss the differences between this and the comics in a separate video for the launch on the 27th.
01:35Today I would like to talk about these eight episodes.
01:38The eight episodes, whether in black and white or in color, take you back to the 1930s.
01:43New York.
01:44Where a certain Ben Reilly, played by Nicolas Cage, is working as a private investigator, but is more of a shadow of his former self.
01:52represents.
01:54He used to drive a Spider.
01:56But then a tragedy occurred, and since then, well, nothing really works properly anymore.
02:02Until he is drawn into an investigation that leads him to meet other people with superpowers, after which he abandons his old self.
02:11He digs out his coat, his old costume, his old hat, and goes out as Spider.
02:17That's exactly what you get to watch in Spider-Noir.
02:21I will not tell you any more about the content at this point.
02:25From now on it would be a spoiler, but what I've told you is basically how the story goes.
02:30is set in motion.
02:31But the whole thing takes place in the 1930s.
02:34And this 1930s setting is maintained throughout the entire series.
02:40Because with Spider-Noir you're basically getting a crime series from good old Hollywood, from the golden age of Hollywood.
02:48Black-and-white.
02:49And that's not only because the color and the decade play a role in the content, but also because the whole
02:57The style of this series is very reminiscent of old black and white crime films.
03:03It starts with how the characters are written, how they act.
03:08In some parts completely over the top, or the game is rather exaggerated, more theatrical, but also in terms of camera angles.
03:18In the past, people often filmed from a slightly lower angle, and not everything was shown.
03:24centered, but everything is designed in a slightly artistic way to convey a certain mood to the outside world.
03:30All of that is contained in Spider-Noir, which is why I can recommend watching the series in black and white.
03:37to look.
03:38I haven't actually watched this series twice yet.
03:42I've always done it this way: one episode in black and white, one episode in color.
03:45And there are really extreme differences here when it comes to color, and what kind of effects that has.
03:53But I would say, after everything I've seen, it's even more fun in black and white, because
04:00This black and white color scheme simply suits the staging and design of the series better.
04:05From the gameplay to the staging, everything feels more like an old TV series, like an old crime film.
04:13at that time.
04:13But that also means that you're basically getting a crime film in series form.
04:19Yes, you will experience Spider.
04:21But he's not in action as often as you might expect from Spider-Man movies.
04:27It's a typical series where the costumed, cheesy hero keeps popping up.
04:32But the bigger part is always the one where you see Nicolas Cage without his mask.
04:38Nevertheless, you don't have to wait forever like in other hero stories before he's seen in costume.
04:44But it's not like you get Spider-Man action every five minutes.
04:50So, above all, you're not getting Spider-Man action here, but Spider action.
04:54And yes, the whole thing features Nicolas Cage, who gives a truly incredible performance.
05:00I don't think I've seen Nicolas Cage in such a fitting role for years.
05:05Firstly, he played a really good Spider-Man, or rather Spider.
05:10But then he also has moments where he can really let loose, be as crazy as he wants.
05:17especially in his earlier films.
05:19So, where he just embodies such craziness with his facial expressions alone, where you think, wow, I want to be with him
05:25not be in the same room.
05:25He's a bit too wild for me.
05:27Awesome, really. It's incredibly fun to watch him do it.
05:31And it's also fun that people here don't take themselves too seriously.
05:36Everything is set in a serious environment, specifically in the 1930s, and takes place in this old crime novel.
05:42-Charm here.
05:43But that also means that a lot of it comes across as a bit slapstick.
05:46Certain fights, and perhaps certain chases as well.
05:51Everything has that, well, good old Hollywood charm.
05:55And yes, you have to like that sort of thing.
05:56And if you don't do that, you could have extreme difficulties with this series.
06:00Especially when you see it in color.
06:02Because you can tell, when you look at the color version, that this series was deliberately produced for black and white.
06:11In other words, extreme emphasis is placed on color contrasts so that the black and white image stands out properly.
06:17But the black and white is also clearly used to highlight certain, let's say, computer animation effects and their weaknesses.
06:27cover it up.
06:29For example, it starts with a scene where you're on top of a very tall building.
06:34And everything in the background just looks like a typical canvas.
06:40Completely.
06:40You can really see, wow, that's a canvas.
06:43And so, this building, where you are standing, really looks like a set piece from some studio.
06:49Which, of course, also fits the way production was done at that time.
06:55In other words, even back then, it was theoretically possible that it might now be a constructed setting.
07:01And that's kind of cool on a meta level.
07:04But it looks a bit strange in color.
07:08And as a result, certain fights and power plays sometimes seem a bit, well, more like a cheap TV movie.
07:17-Series from the 2000s, which was about superheroes.
07:21At the same time, the charm of this color variant is somewhat similar to Gotham.
07:28Everything is a bit over the top in terms of the characters, kept minimalist.
07:32And yes, there are one or two very quirky dialogues, and at the same time, that old Hollywood charm in the dialogues.
07:41in speech, in play.
07:42That's what Gotham has consistently delivered.
07:45And I have to say, it's kind of fun to watch this color version again.
07:50Because, well, if you don't take it too seriously, you really experience some cool moments here that you might
07:56I couldn't even see it that clearly in the black and white version.
08:01But in black and white, the whole thing simply has more flair, more glamour.
08:06The weaknesses are easily recognizable in the color version.
08:09And yes, certain settings, especially, I was referring to this angled view from below, just work the best.
08:16when you have everything in black and white,
08:18where a shadow in the background can really be played with effectively, because it emerges from the darkness in that way,
08:27While it is in a color version, yes, it is a shadow, but I can also distinguish it from everything else.
08:33recognize,
08:34which is not so easily possible in the black and white version, resulting in a completely different dynamic, a completely different
08:39A feeling arises.
08:40So basically, you could say that no matter which version you watch, Spider-Noir is a kind of work of art.
08:47And I have to be completely honest, this artwork initially confused me a little, but then it also...
08:55It was incredibly fun.
08:56However, this is despite the fact that the content of this series itself is not particularly sophisticated.
09:03So, it remains quite superficial, quite predictable, it often goes in circles and remains very one-dimensional, which
09:12as far as the individual characters are concerned.
09:14But one could argue that this, too, is perhaps another game with what one...
09:19What I want to convey here is, well, yes, we are just an old film.
09:23Nicolas Cage even says he hopes the series will encourage people to revisit old classics.
09:28look.
09:29And yes, I would say that anyone who likes this series in black and white might even do it because this
09:34The series gets one used to accepting and enjoying this old style again.
09:41There's really not much to be gained in terms of content.
09:43But still with one or two positive moments.
09:48Oh, I just really like the cast. LeMond Mawson, for example, also as a reporter here.
09:54But above all, of course, Nicolas Cage, as I just mentioned.
09:56He's done another fantastic job here; it's incredibly fun to watch him.
10:01But I must also say that, for example, when it comes to Origin, it's super interesting because you
10:07has chosen a different path here.
10:08Also different from the comics.
10:10And here too, certain things are hinted at again, where one isn't quite sure, ah, what do you want from us?
10:14Is this really the right place to tell the story?
10:16And yes, they play with familiar elements from the Spider-Man world and make it their own.
10:23You could really say this is simply a variation of Spider-Man in his own unique world, detached from reality.
10:29of everything.
10:29You don't need any prior knowledge, you can just jump in and watch it and you might enjoy it.
10:34But you shouldn't expect a typical Spider-Man movie, but rather a Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man in which
10:401930s film,
10:41who doesn't always take himself too seriously, but at the same time is serious enough to continue following this story.
10:49want.
10:50I mean, in recent years there have been repeated attempts to recapture that old charm, that old style and
10:54A wise way to bring this vibe into the modern age.
10:56Spider-Noir really succeeded in this because you really thought, hey, come on, let's really stick to the line here.
11:02We are not trying to be modern while simultaneously imposing that old charm.
11:08No, we're trying to completely recapture the old charm, from slapstick to camera movements, acting, and...
11:16Dialogues.
11:16And it works.
11:18But in terms of content, there's basically not much to be gained.
11:22This entire investigation by Ben Reilly is completely irrelevant.
11:26I mean, really, in the end I stood there and briefly thought about what exactly had happened here, so
11:33Actually, it was a Matt Guffin.
11:34But that's perfectly fine, because I think people watch the series primarily for Nicolas Cage as Spider.
11:41to see.
11:41And he fulfills this job 100%.
11:45Lots of fun, lots of typical Spider-Man moments, but significantly less Spider-Man action than you might expect.
11:55as you might be used to from the movies.
11:57And if that sounds good to you, then take a look.
12:00And maybe you'll do it like I did at first.
12:01You watch one episode in black and white, one episode in color, and then after two episodes at the latest you will also
12:06We need to know whether you prefer to watch in black and white or in color.
12:10This should definitely not stop you from watching this series.
12:15It's not Sin City, it's really a good old Hollywood crime film in black and white, which is light and breezy.
12:25wants to be, plays with a certain vibe and simply delivers a great Nicolas Cage.
12:32And yes, if you're thinking, "Kühn, you hardly ever talk about the others, I think they're all fine,"
12:37But they don't really offer me any great depth here, or anything where I say, wow, that was special.
12:44Except perhaps when it comes to a certain secretary and a certain reporter, but I don't want to go into detail about that.
12:50address that.
12:51They already make such a good pairing for Nicolas Cage, he needs that in one way or another.
12:58But basically every scene, no matter which one, works because of him and not necessarily because of the others.
13:04I would argue that you could theoretically replace all the other cast members, but not Nicolas Cage.
13:12If this sounds interesting to you, take a look and feel free to write to me on the 27th about how you like Spider.
13:17Noir finds.
13:19And yes, we will also talk about the differences between the comic book source material and, of course, this series.
13:24It starts with the fact that he's called Spider here, and the series is called Spider Noir, and
13:30he Ben Reilly instead of Peter Parker.
13:31So, I'd be happy if you checked this out. That's definitely it for my spoiler-free opinion.
13:36to Spider Noir.
