00:30...placed by hostility.
00:32You're useless at this! That's enough!
00:34Sorry, darling.
00:35All trust has gone.
00:36For your sake!
00:37Sorry! Sorry!
00:38It's okay. It's okay.
00:39Compounded by the fact that they seem unable to communicate in a meaningful and a reciprocal way.
00:45I feel unheard when I talk to you about how I'm feeling.
00:52Well, often when you do want to talk, I've got work on my mind and...
01:00...that's important, too.
01:02So it's just a case of bad timing, that's all.
01:05Their marriage doesn't make sense to them anymore.
01:08Over the course of the coming weeks, I'd like to see if we can retrace the steps that led to
01:13this situation.
01:14See if we can work out how they got here.
01:17Next, we have Luke and Stacey Warbur.
01:21I believe the fault lines don't run as deep with them.
01:24I'm grateful for how patient you are.
01:27And that you're here with me now, doing this.
01:32Because I know I'm not giving you what you need.
01:35That's so sweet, babe.
01:37On the surface, they have a loving marriage.
01:41But now can we try taking each other's hands, please?
01:45And maintaining that same eye contact.
01:48By their own admission, there are significant intimacy issues.
01:51Why can't you do this?
01:55Uh, I'm sorry.
01:58I'm sorry, sorry.
01:59Could you take five?
01:59It's okay.
02:00Of course.
02:01It's okay, Luke.
02:04Take your time.
02:06I mean, it's okay.
02:07It's all part of the process.
02:10It's Friday, it's the beginning of the weekend now.
02:13But Monday will be a big day.
02:15I have exciting plans.
02:16I think that there could be a real breakthrough.
02:22Hello.
02:23Darling.
02:26Mine's good.
02:28This looks nice, doesn't it?
02:30Yeah.
02:31Hi, everyone.
02:32Hi.
02:32I just wanted to say thank you very much for all your hard work and your commitment this week.
02:38You should be very proud of yourselves.
02:41There's more for us to do next week.
02:44But for now, enjoy your evening.
02:46Thank you.
02:47Thank you.
02:48Thank you.
02:49Right, bon appetit.
02:51Cheers, everyone.
02:52Cheers.
02:55Cheers.
02:57Cheers.
02:57Wow.
03:19I just feel like every single thing I say is wrong.
03:23Every word, every utterance.
03:25She pounces on it like a wild animal.
03:28Yeah.
03:29She certainly has a way with her words, your missus.
03:35I thought you'd never ask.
03:36It's only duty free.
03:40That's Kira's stuff.
03:42Can't still be swimming, can she?
03:44Great.
03:45All that can be three words for me.
03:48Thank you.
03:59Thank you.
04:03Thank you.
04:04Thank you.
04:05Thank you.

33:31Qu'est-ce que c'est pour toi, sir ?
33:32Oh, c'est un bon.
33:35Qu'est-ce que vous deux ?
33:36Vous avez quelque chose ?
34:16Kira Mayhew's practice
34:17était juste un peu plus de mille.
34:20C'est aussi, on 1 April 2021.
34:24Et Kira Mayhew,
34:25elle s'est passé six mois après.
34:27C'est possible que...
34:29C'est ce que c'était ?
34:31Kira était derrière un accident de voiture ?
34:36C'est bon travail.
34:37C'est bon travail.
34:38C'est bon.
34:38C'est bon.
34:39C'est bon.

37:05Maybe I should take this one
37:20Everyone knows, don't they?
37:22Only us. May I?
37:30Can you tell me when you found out, Mrs Warbur?
37:36Thursday night, I went to get some air on the beach and Kira was there.
37:41She'd been drinking. I've not seen it like that.
37:44She'd always been so composed.
37:46She could hardly stand up, so I helped her back to her bungalow.
37:51She was sort of rambling.
37:54Talking about some guy who had betrayed her back in England before she moved here.
37:58I'd been cheating on her.
38:00I got her home and put her on the couch.
38:03And she looked me in the eyes and spoke to me.
38:06Stacy.
38:07Like it really mattered.
38:08Don't be like me.
38:10Don't, Stacy.
38:11There was just something in the way she'd said it.
38:15Then I knew she'd had a one-to-one session with Luke that day and maybe whatever he'd said, like,
38:20triggered her.
38:22It reminded her of her own betrayal. That's why she was drunk.
38:26So when she was asleep, I saw her notebook.
38:33I felt sick.
38:35Couldn't even process it.
38:38Couldn't even breathe.
38:41So I just pretended I didn't know.
38:44Stacy, you've been through a lot in the last couple of days.
38:50If you were in denial, if Kira was pressing you to confront what you'd found out...
38:57No. No, I didn't.
38:59I admit there was all this pent-up stuff inside me, but I didn't kill Kira.
39:04I swear.
39:14All right.
39:15Well, thank you for talking with me, Mr. Shaw.
39:18What did the ex-boyfriend have to say for himself?
39:20The ex-fiancee.
39:22The affair he was having had been going on for three whole years behind Kira's back when she found out.
39:29Wow. That must have flawed her.
39:31I mean, her job is to provide relationship advice when all the time she was blind to a three-year
39:35-long deception.
39:36Explains why she suddenly upped and left for another country.
39:40And why Luke's betrayal triggered her so much.
39:43And why she had one or three over the limit.
39:45But it still doesn't explain why she was murdered three nights ago.
39:51Inspector Diaz-Thomas, I think we got something.
40:01Patrick Campbell, therapist. Consultation fee, $150.
40:07He's based in Guadalupe. Specializes in hypnotherapy.
40:11Kira called him Friday afternoon, asking for advice.
40:15He offered to share their conversation as part of our investigation.
40:20On what?
40:21She said a client of hers, Margot Hartnell, had just opened up to her and was struggling with the memory
40:26of an event of her recent past.
40:28Because she had completely blocked it out, which apparently is not uncommon for people dealing with traumatic experiences.
40:34And according to Mr. Campbell, it's a pretty unorthodox approach for Kira to resort to hypnotherapy so early on in
40:41the process.
40:42But she was convinced it was necessary.
40:44So this forgotten memory, do we know what it's to do with?
40:48The night their daughter was killed in a hit and run five years ago.
40:52Mrs. Hartnell does not remember a thing about it.
40:56But ever since, she's been growing this feeling of guilt, you know?
41:01Like, maybe she might have done something bad that night.
41:06Wait, you don't mean...
41:10All that was known was that it was a female driver.
41:15Well, Mrs. Hartnell wanted it all off the record.
41:18That's why there was nothing in her notes or recordings.
41:22Right, we need to talk to Mrs. Hartnell and that therapist.
41:25We need him here sharpish. Come on.
41:29Well, at first it was just guilt I felt.
41:32Our grief counsellor said it was normal as a parent to feel a sense of responsibility.
41:38Look, whatever I did five years ago, I want the truth to come out.
41:41If you think I killed Kira Mayhew because I wanted to stop that happening, you're wrong.
41:47She arranged for me to have hypnotherapy today.
41:49Well, that can still happen, Mrs. Hartnell.
41:52We've arranged for a hypnotherapist to speak with you, if you feel you're able.
41:58Inspector!
42:00If you wouldn't mind going with Sergeant Fletcher.
42:03Yeah.
42:08I guess all we can do now is wait.
42:17Ah, we're back to the bingo ball.
42:19Inspector!
42:20Sarge!
42:22Just got back from dusting off the bingo ball machine for prints.
42:26Unfortunately, nothing.
42:33What's up with the inspector?
42:36Am I alright?
42:39Inspector!
42:40Everything alright, sir?
42:41You've got something?
42:45Sir, what are you doing?
42:49It's a little experiment.
42:51The bingo balls float.
43:07The bingo ball floats.
43:12Okay, so, why take it out of the bingo ball cage thingy and bring it to the sea? To the
43:20water's edge?
43:21Was it just to see if it floats? Or, maybe it's to see where it goes?
43:32In which case...
43:34So, how did one of them manage to leave the dinner table, run down to the beach, somehow get themselves
43:39100 metres out to sea, drown Keira Mayhew?
43:42None of them left the table for more than two to three minutes at a time.
43:46And was that a regular thing? Or going for a swim at that time?
43:51Most evenings.
43:52She said Keira seemed distracted.
43:59Of course!
44:01That's why you were there, you little beauty!
44:08Okay, I need to speak to a fisherman, or an oceanographer-ologist type of person, basically anyone who knows the
44:14currents in this bay.
44:15T.S. Thomas, I need a toxicology report done on Keira Mayhew.
44:19Officer Rose, I need you to collect some evidence from her office.
44:22But, you know who did it?
44:24I do.
44:25And I know how they managed to drown Keira Mayhew 100 metres out of sea, without even stepping a foot
44:31in the water!
44:32Come on!
44:37For those wondering why Margot Hartnell isn't here with us, it's because she's currently with a hypnotherapist.
44:44Doing what she was always supposed to be doing today.
44:46Trying to recover a buried memory of what really happened five years ago.
44:52The night her daughter died.
44:54Why am I telling you this?
44:56Because Margot's therapy sessions were meant to be conducted by Keira Mayhew.
45:02Until somebody tried to stop the truth from coming out.
45:06By murdering her.
45:07Mr. Hartnell.
45:13Me? I did no such thing.
45:15Oh, but you did. I know you did.
45:18But how? I was at dinner when it happened. On dry bloody land.
45:22Yeah, you were. Which is why it was so clever of you.
45:25But now that I've got a better understanding of what's gone on, I believe you created a small window of
45:30opportunity in which to commit murder.
45:33But not 100 metres out at sea. You drowned Keira Mayhew right outside your own bungalow.
45:42Because from the very start of this case, we've worked on the assumption that as Miss Mayhew's body was discovered
45:48100 metres out at sea in a straight line from where she swam, that's where she was drowned.
45:54But what if actually, when Miss Mayhew went for her evening dip, she preferred to swim along the shore rather
46:03than out from it?
46:05That would mean she'd have to swim past your bungalow farther along the beach.
46:11And that would give you opportunity to commit murder.
46:16But when? I told you I was at dinner when it happened.
46:21Yeah, we have security camera footage that shows you leaving the dinner table to get your glasses at 18 minutes
46:27past seven.
46:28I was gone, what, a couple of minutes, three minutes at the most.
46:32You're not seriously suggesting I was able to physically drown a fit and healthy woman in that time without getting
46:39soaked in water?
46:40Yeah. Sounds impossible, right?
46:43But I don't think Miss Mayhew was as fit and healthy as she might normally be.
46:48I believe you sedated her.
46:52We know that your wife uses sleeping pills.
46:55None of us been to bed.
46:57No one took a sleeping pill.
46:59And we also know that you are the last person to have a one-to-one session with Miss Mayhew
47:04that day at 5pm.
47:05One-to-one sessions in the afternoon with Stacey Warbur, then Alistair Hartnell.
47:11And while there, we believe you spiked her drink when she wasn't looking.
47:20We didn't believe Kira was drugged because the finger marks on her neck suggested she was held down by force
47:26and drowned.
47:27We're awaiting the toxicology report and results from the glass Kira drank from.
47:32And I've no doubt we'll get confirmation that there were significant traces of sleeping pills in her system.
47:38And so, while Miss Mayhew was swimming, she suddenly felt drowsy and swam ashore.
47:47When you returned to your bungalow under the pretense of getting your glasses, you ran down to the beach where
47:54Miss Mayhew was lying unconscious on the sand.
47:56And then you did two things.
47:59First, you grabbed her neck and shoulders, making sure to leave bruises so it would look like someone had strangled
48:07her and forced her under the water.
48:10Before moving her into the sea for her to be carried away, making sure that she was face down so
48:18that still unconscious, her lungs would fill with water.
48:22It took less than a minute.
48:24All you had to do now was hurry back to the dinner table and leave Kira to drown and let
48:30the sea do the rest of the work for you.
48:34We checked with a local oceanologist at the university, and the current in this bay moves in a north-westerly
48:42direction, which means it would have carried Miss Mayhew's body diagonally, taking her from your bungalow here to where her
48:51body was discovered here.
48:53And with her clothes being left on the beach here, we'd all assume she swam in a straight line.
49:02Now, you had no idea where the currents would take Kira's body.
49:05So, you had to test it first, didn't you?
49:10You went and found this.
49:13And you threw it into the sea to observe which route it took, which was conveniently in a north-westerly
49:19direction, from your bungalow directly to where Kira began her nightly swim.
49:23And that's when your plan finally came together.
49:26Kira's body was found still at sea, not long after she drowned.
49:31But this ball, left overnight, ended up washing up ashore.
49:35And that was your undoing.
49:37But why would he do this to her?
49:40Because he didn't want Kira to help his wife remember.
49:44Well, remember what?
49:45What he did.
49:53I remember, Alistair.
49:57I remember all of it.
50:01All the horror of it.
50:04You rushing in and telling me someone had hurt our little girl.
50:10And I remember the ambulance and the police and the shock and the pain.
50:19And I remember you coming in and holding me in tears shaking.
50:28Both of us heartbroken.
50:34And I remember, in that moment, the smell of alcohol on your breath.
50:44And I remember coming back inside.
50:50And seeing you.
50:58I checked the original case file, Mr Hartnell.
51:01And the phone call to the police, in which the hit and run driver was described as female,
51:07came from an anonymous caller.
51:10That was you, wasn't it?
51:12Trying to direct suspicion away from yourself.
51:22I would have lost everything.
51:32Alistair Hartnell.
51:34I'm arresting you on suspicion of the murder of Kira Mayhew.
51:37You didn't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned
51:42something you later rely on in court.
51:57I never want to see you ever again.
52:15Well, well, well. Good evening to you both.
52:19Good evening.
52:20Catherine, we spoke at Marian Edwards' charity barbecue, I think.
52:25I don't remember.
52:26I certainly enjoyed our little chat.
52:31Commissioner, can I get you a rum?
52:33That won't be necessary. This won't take that long.
52:36Think I'll have one, Catherine, if you wouldn't mind?
52:40I appreciate you giving me an advance copy of the article.
52:45Here is my written statement in response.
52:51Saying...
52:52I agree with every single word you've written.
52:59Sorry?
52:59After receiving some sage advice from my good friend here.
53:04As I say in my statement, it hurt to think that the bond I had forged with this island had
53:12been broken.
53:13But the circumstances were of my own making.
53:16So, I will be the one to fix it.
53:20And how will you do that?
53:21As of tomorrow, I will be commencing an initiative with my team.
53:26And with a little help from the Highlands Mayor.
53:29An initiative to strengthen our relationship with the community.
