00:00To rise up into a position in the industry as a young woman, because it takes longer,
00:06that sometimes then making the decision to put all the focus into that
00:11or to put all the focus into the family is a complex thing that men don't often have to think
00:15about.
00:16I guess those TV series have been really in-depth, complex opportunities and characters
00:24to spend a lot of time with a character in a way that you don't really get to with film.
00:29And also it just happens, I mean, I receive TV and film and it just lately or for some time
00:36now,
00:37the film stuff has been the more interesting, meatier characters.
00:43So it feels definitely more complex women than I have read in the film scripts.
00:49I think it can be very scary as a young filmmaker to start out, particularly for young women.
00:54You know, very often women are overlooked in our industry and particularly women directors have a tendency to be overlooked.
01:03It really takes, you know, very, very concerted attention to direct something,
01:10to direct a film and be gone for many, many months at a time.
01:14And I think, too, sometimes the prospect of that for young women,
01:20it takes so long to rise up into a position in the industry as a young woman because it takes
01:27longer,
01:28that sometimes then making the decision to put all the focus into that
01:33or to put all the focus into the family is a complex thing that men don't often have to think
01:37about.
01:38I think there is, up until again recently, a perception that, you know, women just aren't as good.
01:45Today we have, you know, there are a wonderful handful of women,
01:52whether it's Chloe Zhao or Emerald Fennell or Greta Gerwig or, you know, there's Olivia Wilde.
01:59There are some very, very talented women out there and some, of course, who are being given, you know,
02:06huge budgets to and creating successful blockbusters.
02:13It feels like the worm is turning, not tables are turning, but it feels like things are turning for the
02:16better, certainly.
02:17But this really does feel like the first moment where there is even a consideration, I think,
02:27that, you know, potential blockbusters could be handed over to a woman and could have the potential of being successful.
02:34I've always been inspired by Jane Fonda and inspired by how she gives herself over to her politics.
02:46and she's incredibly brave and also she's a, you know, fantastic actor and a L'Oreal ambassador.
