00:00The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service says warrants have been issued for the arrest of Kai Yotsili,
00:06the common-law wife of deceased Joshua Samaru, in connection with his killing and the shooting at police officers earlier
00:13this year.
00:14According to the TTPS-Sili of Bamboo Settlement No. 1, Valsain is wanted for manslaughter
00:20in relation to the death of Joshua Samaru during an incident on January 20th
00:26at the corner of College Road and Bassey Street Extension, St. Augustine.
00:30Police say Sili is also facing three counts of shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm
00:36against police officers who responded to the incident.
00:39The charges follow what the TTPS described as a comprehensive investigation into the deadly confrontation.
00:46Investigators submitted a detailed file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions,
00:51which later advised that criminal charges be laid.
00:55The TTPS says additional related charges are also expected.
00:59Police confirmed that while the warrants have been issued, they have not yet been executed.
01:05The police service also moved to clarify statements made during Thursday's media briefing
01:10by Police Commissioner Alistair Guevaro.
01:13According to the TTPS, the commissioner never stated that the police officers would be charged in the matter.
01:19Instead, investigators were directed following consultations with the DPP
01:24to proceed with criminal charges arising out of the January 20th incident.
01:30Joshua Samaru was killed during the confrontation in St. Augustine
01:34that also involved an exchange of gunfire with police.
01:37The incident drew national attention and public speculation over whether police officers could face charges.
01:44Months later, the Director of Public Prosecution has advised
01:48that charges instead be laid against Samaru's common-law wife Kaia Sili for manslaughter
01:54and allegedly opening fire on responding officers.
