A devastating fire destroyed part of Daishoin Temple in western Japan on Wednesday (May 20), including the historic Reikado Hall that housed a sacred flame believed to have burned continuously for more than 1,200 years.

The flame, known as the “unquenchable” fire, was originally lit by a Buddhist monk in the year 806.
