00:00Have you ever wondered why Brazil wear yellow?
00:02This yellow jersey might be the most iconic in the game, but it has its roots in one of
00:07the World Cup's greatest humiliations.
00:10When the Brazilian national team played its first game in 1914, players wore an all-white
00:14kit with a blue collar.
00:16That white and blue combination remained until 1950, and a game that would stun the soccer-mad
00:22nation.
00:23Brazil were just one game away from winning the 1950 World Cup on home soil until losing
00:28to underdogs Uruguay in their final game.
00:31That loss, known as the Maracanazo, was a huge blow to Brazilian soccer culture, and it was
00:36decided that a new image was needed to help the team move forward.
00:40So in 1953, Brazilian newspaper Correio da Manha ran a competition to design a new kit.
00:46An 18-year-old illustrator, Alde Garcia Schley, submitted a sketch with yellow shirts, blue
00:52shorts and white socks.
00:53That ended up being the winning submission, and Brazil duly adopted the kit.
00:57The national team then went on to win the World Cup for the first time in 1958, establishing
01:02themselves and that classic yellow jersey as the dominant force in international soccer.
