04:35of course yesterday reported that the EU could
04:37be prepared to intervene the supply
04:39chain and there's also been reports
04:41that the EU will seriously now consider
04:43plans to diversify
04:45suppliers coming into Europe. So a lot
04:47of that will feature heavily in this meeting.
04:49Pretty high stakes meeting and this meeting comes of course
04:51as Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, is on his
04:53way to Beijing but just tell us as well
04:55speaking of energy, we've seen Italy's Georgia
04:57Maloney upping the ante over deficit
04:59rules here in Brussels. Well she has and these
05:01two stories of course are connected
05:03because energy prices
05:05we've seen now more than three months of elevated
05:07energy prices. The Strait of Hormuz
05:09is a crucial point for
05:11global oil and is still far
05:13from as I mentioned operating. Normally
05:15all of that is having trickle down effects on
05:17the European industry for a country like Italy
05:19really is the SMEs
05:21it's the small and medium companies
05:23that are the backbone to this country
05:25this is having a serious
05:27impact and the Italian
05:29Prime Minister is facing an election next year too
05:31so she's now sending a letter which hopefully
05:33we can put up on the screen
05:35Maeve, everyone in Brussels got a copy
05:37of this letter yesterday. It was leaked
05:38all over the place so really the Italians
05:40wanted to send a big message with this
05:43what they argue is that this is an
05:45emergency, it's just as important as
05:47defence, this is critical for Europe
05:49and they call on the Commission to
05:51relax their fiscal rules
05:53remember for European countries every year
05:55they have to keep their deficit below
05:573% what Georgia Maloney argues
05:59is that unless there is an easing
06:01on those rules unless there's an
06:03exemption to measures related
06:05to energy, well Italy
06:07will go above the 3% or if they
06:09don't want to do that they will not be able to
06:11play into a massive defence programme
06:13that the EU wants, that the Commission
06:15wants which is the safe. So she's
06:17really saying if you want me to play ball on defence
06:19you need to help me out on energy
06:21a lot of that the Italians feel their concerns
06:23have not been addressed properly by Brussels
06:25and all of this is happening in anticipation
06:26of a European leaders summit. We now see that
06:29the Italian leader is saying
06:31either we get flexibility
06:33on energy or this is going to have an impact
06:35on defence, we cannot spend for
06:37everything. The problem however
06:38is Brussels says in order to put forward
06:41extraordinary measures you need to
06:43have a severe economic downturn
06:45but the EU is not quite there yet
06:46there is a risk of stagflation but we've
06:49not seen a massive recession manifest
06:51Okay Maria Seu, thank you so much
06:53for that analysis and you can catch more
06:54of Maria's analysis on her brand new newsletter
06:57that is called Off the Record. But now
06:59we can take you to the French city of
07:00Strasbourg where MEPs are meeting for
07:03a routine voting session. Tough talks
07:05are set to take place late into the night
07:07about whether or not to rubber stamp
07:09that controversial EU-US trade deal.
07:12For a refresher first though, to hear
07:13what's at stake, here's our Jakob Janus.
07:17Hey, what are you doing tonight
07:19at 9pm? Maybe going
07:21for a date? If so
07:23better thought for European lawmakers
07:25and diplomats locked tonight in a room
07:27in Strasbourg, desperately trying to
07:29prevent an all-out transatlantic trade
07:31war. And the clock is ticking down
07:33to an unforgiving 4th of July
07:35deadline set by Donald Trump
07:37who has threatened a 25% tariff
07:39on European cars if
07:41Brussels refuses to accept his terms
07:43All right, so how did Europe end up
07:46in this mess?
07:49Last July, Trump and Ursula von der Leyen
07:52struck a trade deal in Scotland.
07:53And the maths looked simple.
07:55Zero tariffs on US industrial goods
07:57against a 15% cap on European exports.
08:00And all of that was built to protect
08:02a relationship with almost 1.7 trillion euros.
08:06And that's a lot of zeros.
08:08But now the European Parliament
08:10is pushing back.
08:11After a US Supreme Court ruling
08:14against the tariffs,
08:16Washington introduced new duties
08:17on steel and aluminium,
08:19effectively violating the treaty
08:21before signature.
08:22And European lawmakers argue
08:24Europe cannot be bullied,
08:25so they are baking free
08:27defensive shields into the text.
08:29The known as Sunrise Clause
08:31stoles the deal until Washington
08:33drops these steel duties.
08:34And there is also the Sunset Clause,
08:37which automatically ends the agreement
08:38in March 2028,
08:40so just before Trump leaves office.
08:43Finally, there is also the Greenland Clause,
08:45allowing Brussels to suspend everything
08:48if Trump threatens European territorial integrity again.
08:52And quite predictably,
08:54this has split Brussels.
08:55The center-right EPP wants a quick deal
08:58to avoid industry chaos.
08:59But the socialists are digging in.
09:02And top European Parliament negotiator,
09:04Bern Lange,
09:05insists European legislation
09:07must not be dictated by threats from Washington.
09:10So if negotiators reach a compromise tonight,
09:13the tax heads to a plenary vote in June.
09:16But if the deadlock holds,
09:18this massive trade relationship
09:20hits a cliff edge.
09:21And that 4th of July deadline
09:23will bring a wave of American tariffs
09:25straight to Europe's doorstep.
09:27So if you are going on a date tonight,
09:29you now have a perfect icebreaker topic.
09:32And no, you don't have to thank me for that.
09:40Jakub Janis there.
09:41Well, our correspondent in Strasbourg,
09:43Vincenzo Genovese,
09:44has plans for tonight.
09:45He'll be covering these crunch talks
09:47for Euronews.
09:48And he's standing by for us this morning
09:49in the very European Parliament in Strasbourg.
09:52So good morning, Vincenzo.
09:53Just tell us, it is make or break time now
09:56for the EU-US trade deal.
09:57Tell us more.
10:00It is, Maeve.
10:01Good morning.
10:02Good morning from Strasbourg.
10:03As you said, as you explained,
10:05the clock is ticking,
10:06pressure is mounting
10:07from the US administration
10:09to get this deal done.
10:10But there are still some clauses,
10:13some details to fix.
10:15And we are here with Juliana Zovko,
10:17who is one of the people
10:18who will be in the room.
10:19She's the negotiator
10:20from the European People's Party.
10:22Why is it taking so long?
10:25But we must understand
10:28that we are here
10:29represented by different political groups.
10:31So on one hand,
10:32I'm representing
10:33the European People's Party,
10:35the central-right party
10:36that is pro-business,
10:38jobs-orientated,
10:40and it's trying to save
10:41the European industry
10:42and European jobs
10:43and to give them certainty
10:45by making this deal done
10:46and by closing this deal.
10:48But on the other hand,
10:50you have groups
10:50who are really advocating
10:52ideological fight
10:53on the other side
10:55of the ocean,
10:56which I'm strictly against.
10:58And we are having
10:59all these geopolitical changes
11:01being a part of the deal,
11:04which is not,
11:05from the start,
11:07meant to be.
11:08So the prolongation,
11:10extension,
11:11is despite our will,
11:12despite the will
11:14of the European People's Party.
11:15The socialists are trying
11:16to stick to stricter clauses,
11:18let's say, like this.
11:20OK, but US President Donald Trump
11:22said there is a deadline.
11:24For July, after this,
11:25much higher tariffs.
11:27So do you feel the pressure?
11:29But that's a part
11:31of the interpretation
11:33how this European Union
11:35is treating the deal
11:37that was done
11:37in August last year.
11:39I mean, if I was an American,
11:41I would also be confused
11:42about our side of respecting
11:45the deal,
11:47because Americans
11:47have started his part
11:49immediately.
11:50The process is much more simple,
11:53but the complex process,
11:54procedure that is
11:56completely acceptable
11:58from this side
11:59and all this legislative procedure
12:01is taking a long time.
12:04And ideological fight,
12:06as I already said,
12:07in what is going on
12:08in the United States.
12:09We, European People's Party,
12:11wanted this deal done
12:13immediately,
12:13but I'm afraid
12:15we cannot do it
12:17on our own.
12:18But do you feel confident
12:19for tonight?
12:19I mean,
12:20what are the most
12:20contentious points?
12:22I know it's a difficult question.
12:24I mean,
12:25I felt confident
12:27yesterday.
12:28It's like the weather
12:29in Brussels
12:30or here in Strasbourg.
12:32It changes,
12:33you know,
12:34every hour.
12:35And by the news
12:37that I'm receiving,
12:39I'm also receiving
12:40different messages
12:41from my colleagues.
12:42And I'm not so confident
12:44this morning
12:45by the...
12:48What did it change?
12:50No,
12:50I haven't seen
12:51that the position
12:52has changed.
12:53So we will see.
12:54We have a shadows meeting
12:55and I will discuss
12:56with my colleagues
12:57how serious
12:58we are
12:58to enter
12:59into negotiations
13:00to get this deal
13:01done tonight.
13:02But what happens
13:03if you can't
13:04track a deal?
13:04I mean,
13:05this is one
13:05of the last chances
13:06to get
13:07the deal done
13:08and for it
13:09to be approved
13:10in June
13:11plenary session
13:11to match
13:13Trump's deadline.
13:14What will happen?
13:16It will happen
13:16a perfect storm
13:17for our industry,
13:18for our jobs,
13:19for our tourism.
13:21I'm from Croatia.
13:22Everything will,
13:23you know,
13:24spiral
13:24from German car industry
13:27to Italian cheese industry,
13:29wine and everything
13:30to Croatian tourism industry.
13:32The perfect storm
13:33will happen
13:34and then the consequences
13:35will be clear
13:36who will be paying it.
13:38And from the start
13:39I was saying
13:39I was for our part
13:41of the deal
13:41to be respected
13:42and I'm not responsible
13:43for a perfect storm
13:44we are running into.
13:46Okay,
13:46let's hope not.
13:47Geliana Zovko,
13:48thank you very much
13:49and good luck.
13:50I think you need it.
13:52May.
13:52Of course,
13:53good luck.
13:54We'll all keep
13:55a very close eye
13:55on whether that does
13:56end out to be
13:57a perfect storm
13:57and report it here
13:59on Euro News.
14:00But Vincenzo,
14:01before you go,
14:01tonight MEPs
14:02or today
14:02will also be taking
14:03a moment out
14:04to hand out
14:05the so-called
14:05European Order
14:06of Merit prize.
14:07It goes to a figure
14:08who's been working
14:09towards pushing
14:10EU values
14:11and integration.
14:12There's some
14:12well-known figures
14:13up for the prize.
14:14Tell us more.
14:17Yes,
14:18indeed,
14:18the European Parliament
14:19President
14:19Roberta Metsola
14:20will honour
14:21the laureates
14:22of the European
14:23Order of Merit.
14:2420 prominent
14:25European figures
14:26have been selected
14:27including
14:28Ukrainian President
14:30Volodymyr Zelensky,
14:31Moldovan President
14:32Maya Sandu,
14:33former Polish
14:33President
14:34Lech Walesa,
14:35there are also
14:35the Irish rock band
14:37U2
14:37that you know
14:38very well
14:38and basketball player
14:40Gianni Santetokounmpo.
14:41But the most
14:42controversial name
14:43is probably
14:44former German
14:45Chancellor
14:46Angela Merkel.
14:47We know
14:48her legacy
14:48is quite disputed.
14:50She has been
14:52a stabilizing force
14:53during her
14:5416 years
14:55in power.
14:56She was
14:57a reassuring
14:58presence
14:59in the Germans
15:01nicknamed her
15:01Mutti,
15:02which means
15:03Mom.
15:03But she
15:05had also
15:05let's say
15:06dark sides.
15:08For example
15:08the debt crisis,
15:10Germany's
15:11interdependence
15:12with Russia,
15:13the appeasement
15:13towards Vladimir
15:14Putin
15:15after the
15:16annexation
15:16of Crimea
15:17in 2014,
15:19the shutdown
15:19of nuclear
15:20energy
15:21was also
15:22a contentious
15:22point
15:23and
15:23Commission
15:24President
15:24Ursula von
15:25der Leyen
15:25criticised
15:26it
15:26in the
15:29past months.
15:30So opinions
15:30are quite
15:31divided
15:32on Merkel's
15:33legacy
15:33and it
15:34will be
15:34very
15:34interesting
15:35to see
15:36how the
15:36hemicycle
15:37will react
15:38today
15:39to her
15:40brief address
15:41here in
15:42the plenary
15:43in Strasbourg
15:43at 11.30.
15:45And of course
15:46we will follow
15:47it on Euronews,
15:48Maeve.
15:48We will indeed.
15:49A long
15:49morning and
15:50night for you
15:50there in
15:51Strasbourg,
15:51Vincenzo
15:52Ginovese.
15:52Thank you so
15:53much for
15:53that live
15:54update.
15:55But now
15:55back in
15:55Brussels
15:56exactly.
15:5725 years
15:58ago EU
15:58member states
15:59agreed to
15:59set up an
16:00EU
16:00military
16:01committee
16:01to respond
16:02initially to
16:03the Balkan
16:03conflicts of
16:04the 90s.
16:05And this week
16:06EU chiefs of
16:06defence from
16:07all across
16:08Europe will
16:08be flocking
16:09to Brussels
16:09to celebrate.
16:10But souring
16:11the mood of
16:11course will
16:12be the
16:12ongoing war
16:12in Ukraine
16:13and the
16:14conflict in
16:14the Middle
16:14East.
16:15For more
16:15I'm joined
16:16here in
16:16the studio
16:16by General
16:17Sean Clancy
16:18that's the
16:18chairman of
16:19the EU
16:19military
16:20committee.
16:20Good
16:20morning.
16:21Good
16:21to have
16:21you with
16:21us.
16:22So this
16:22week as I
16:23said
16:23chiefs of
16:23defence will
16:24be flocking
16:24to Brussels
16:25to celebrate
16:26but are you
16:27all on the
16:27same page
16:27when it
16:28comes to
16:28the threats
16:28facing the
16:29union today?
16:30Very much
16:30so.
16:31I think
16:31flocking
16:32into
16:32celebrations
16:32I think
16:33it's a
16:33moment of
16:33reflection
16:34more than
16:34celebration.
16:35I think
16:35it's a
16:36time to
16:36pause
16:36and reflect
16:37how far
16:38the
16:38European
16:39military
16:39committee
16:41has come
16:42as a
16:42whole
16:43over that
16:43period of
16:43time.
16:44No more
16:44so in
16:45the last
16:45four years
16:45and you've
16:46mentioned
16:46it,
16:46Ukraine
16:46which is
16:47the
16:47number
16:47one
16:47priority
16:48for
16:48all
16:48of
16:48us
16:48and
16:49the
16:49focus
16:49of
16:49everyone.
16:50Although
16:50we do
16:51come from
16:51the
16:51geographical
16:52spaces
16:52throughout
16:53Europe
16:54so it's
16:54north,
16:55south,
16:55east and
16:55west and
16:56we take
16:56all of
16:57these
16:57things
16:57into
16:57consideration
16:58but
16:58Ukraine
16:58of course
16:59is
16:59the
16:59primacy
17:00and
17:01the
17:01priority
17:01on
17:01which
17:01we
17:02examine
17:02it.
17:02And
17:03this
17:03week
17:03with
