The Falcons are one of several teams that are reporting to OTAs this week, but what sort of involvement can we expect from the players? What can they hope to build over the next several weeks?
Transcript
00:00All right, man.
00:00More guys sounding off if you missed the beginning of our show today.
00:03Day Day and I and Oren and Abe, we're doing our Twitch show on YouTube also.
00:07It's a sneak peek.
00:09We do like about a 15-minute, it's a quickie.
00:11And we give you like the day's show, what we're going to be rapping about.
00:14And a couple guys are sounding off, and we got into it because OTA started around the NFL.
00:17So organized team activities, which by nature are voluntary, but with a new coaching staff,
00:21we'd imagine you're going to have almost like, I would imagine 100%, you know,
00:25I would imagine attendance, right, for this from Falcon players.
00:28Certainly the young guys and, you know, a lot of players learning the nuances of the
00:31Kevin Stefanski, you know, offense.
00:33I heard Mike Johnson talking about it this morning.
00:36He said even a guy like Jake Matthews, an OG like Jake, has got to learn some of the things
00:39they're doing with the zone, with the scheme, and how you've got to get out.
00:41And, you know, you've got to be ready to do it as an O-lineman in this offense.
00:45Yeah, again, you mentioned it.
00:46New offensive coordinator, new head coach, new system, potentially a new quarterback with Tua.
00:51Again, we're getting into the Penix thing, and we'll see how it plays out.
00:54But a lot of moving parts.
00:56Yes, you've got, you know, a couple of things that you do have, and Drake London
00:59and Bajon Robinson and all that.
01:01But, yeah, why would you not want to make sure everything is, you know, up to speed
01:08and crossing the T's, dotting the I's, and just be as far along as you possibly can?
01:13There's a reason the league gives you, when you've got a new head coach,
01:17the ability to do things a little bit earlier than the other teams.
01:20Take advantage of it, and, yeah, you would think the attendance would be a part of that.
01:24The other thing in this camp is, you know, what is this wide receiver room going to look like?
01:29I mean, I don't even know what Jahan Dotson is.
01:31You know, I mean, I don't think Eagles fans could even tell you what he is because of the depth
01:34chart there.
01:35So, I mean, do you feel we addressed it, or is it still kind of just in a holding pattern?
01:39Lameda is a key.
01:40Yeah, he's an OG, too.
01:42It's a good question.
01:43The question is, who's the two, and are they a real two?
01:46Right.
01:47I mean, Zachariah Branch might come out of camp this summer as clearly as that guy.
01:51I mean, by the way, I mean, they love him.
01:53You heard the interview that we did with him.
01:55I mean, the guy, look, the nonsense in Athens was just that.
01:58It was just a waste of everybody's time.
02:00This guy's a pro.
02:01You heard the things that were said about him coming out of Athens, the work ethic.
02:04If you didn't hear the interview, it's online from Odyssey from a couple weeks ago.
02:07This guy, I think, can't stretch the field.
02:09I think, yes, you can do the gadget plays.
02:11You can do sweeps.
02:12But I just think he's a tremendous athlete.
02:14I don't want to put labels on guys because, you know, you set the bar too high.
02:17But you want him to be a Tyreek Hill-ish, you know, I mean, that kind of Antonio Brown-ish,
02:21you know, kind of guy that can do all sorts of things for you.
02:24You just want him to draw the defense one way or another, right?
02:27Right.
02:27And because when you have a guy like Kyle Pitts that can go over the middle,
02:29when you have a guy like Drake London that has lived in the middle of the field as well,
02:33you just want to open things up.
02:35And you know what?
02:35If you want to collapse on Kyle, collapse on Pitts, guess what?
02:38The guy on the outside will go deep.
02:39And that's what you're looking for is to threaten people deep.
02:43And that opens things up for Bajon out of the backfield as well.
02:46So, yeah, you know, it's going to be interesting.
02:49I think it's Dotson or Branch becomes your two, right?
02:52Right.
02:52I think we're in real no offense to Olamide.
02:55That guy shouldn't be your number two.
02:57The question partially is, all right, well, how are you using Kyle Pitts?
03:01Is he a tight end?
03:01Are you lining him up as a receiver?
03:03Are you lining up as a tight end?
03:04Is he kind of a de facto two in terms of where he's lining up, all that stuff?
03:08But there's possibilities for an explosion, right?
03:14Like, I don't think I'm the only one who feels that.
03:16I don't know if Dotson is a legit two or not.
03:19Right.
03:19But he might be.
03:21He might be a guy that gets a chance to stretch his wings and do his thing.
03:24Now, certainly, you know, with this offense and now the ball, if it's Tua, the ball's
03:29coming out quicker than – that's a question.
03:31Does the ball – is the timing of the offense going to be different with Michael Penix Jr.?
03:36I mean, if and when he's ready to rock, if he can – look, if he is ready to rock
03:40and
03:40he competes and he's able to go from day one of camp, fantastic.
03:43And he wins the job.
03:44I'd like to think the team, if they had a choice, would like to see Penix Jr.
03:47because of the nature of the salary control.
03:48He's a cheaper option long term.
03:50Tua is cheap right now.
03:51But Tua, it was just – they brought Tua in for a cheap option.
03:54I don't know why Carl does his Tua, T-U-A thing.
03:56I don't know.
03:57Tua, to me, they don't owe Tua anything.
03:59Literally.
03:59The Dolphins are paying for all that money.
04:01But how does it look different when Michael Penix Jr. is under center compared to when
04:04Tua, who in Miami was 1-2-3 and the ball was out?
04:06Yeah, I just don't know if that's a fair, oh, he's going to come from Miami and he can
04:10only run the offense that Miami ran.
04:12I agree that the ball did come out quicker.
04:14But you agree they both have to learn this new offense.
04:16Oh, sure, sure, sure.
04:17But – and I agree with you.
04:18The ball came out quick in Miami.
04:19Does that mean we have to design an offense that gets the ball out quicker?
04:23I don't think so.
04:24I think if you protect Tua, he can take his full drop.
04:26He can do his plant.
04:27He can look and survey the field and find what throw he needs to make.
04:31I'm not sold on it.
04:32It just has to come out quick.
04:33Now, it might help to come out quick with certain receivers, right, with the way that
04:37you want to get Bajon Robinson the ball quickly and get him into space.
04:40And you probably could say, at times, the same thing with Zachariah Branch.
04:43Does that mean we can't let plays develop?
04:45I don't buy that.
04:46The fact that they did it one way in Miami, not everything is going to travel with Tua.
04:51And so – and I'm also not – by the way, this whole – I hate to disagree with you
04:56on this, but this whole Tua's only here because he's cheap thing –
05:00He's only here because he's cheap.
05:00I only buy half of that.
05:02I only buy half of that.
05:03Why is he here?
05:04Because they don't believe in panics, right?
05:05No, no, no, no.
05:06So why is he here?
05:07First off, you had to have a backup.
05:08You had to have a backup.
05:09Right.
05:09There's a reason you chose Tua for $1.5 million and not Logan Woodside.
05:14No offense, Logan.
05:15No, look –
05:17Tua has been –
05:18He's been a really good quarterback.
05:19Statistically, he's better than anything we've done here since Matt Ryan left.
05:22And so all I'm suggesting is everything that went wrong in Miami all on Tua because we're
05:28blaming Zach Robinson for some appendix's early struggles.
05:31Are we sure that Mike McDaniel didn't just completely lose – we just talked about the
05:36Phillies running 15-4, and I know it's baseball football, but under Don Mattingly, it looked
05:40like a whole new team.
05:41Are we – maybe something went wrong in Miami where Mike McDaniel – because Tua was at
05:47one point one of the top five, six quarterbacks in the league, just from a numbers standpoint.
05:53I don't think you bring him in if there wasn't even like a little belief that that potential
05:58is still there.
05:58It may not be, Mike.
05:59It may not be.
06:00The money certainly helps.
06:02You're not having a, quote, quarterback competition between Tua and Panics if you don't think Tua
06:07actually has something to provide this team with.
06:10Look, I mean, it is a better option.
06:11We talked at the time it was Kyler Murray or it was Tua.
06:14If you want to guys who have experience, who started a bunch of games, you know, the
06:16only thing with Tua is it's funny.
06:18You know, two years ago, everything with Tua, every conversation you heard on national
06:22TV, on local radio, one hit away from career's over.
06:25Now all of a sudden that doesn't happen.
06:27That doesn't matter.
06:28He's still one hit away from his career being over.
06:29I think everyone's one hit away, so I've never bought that company.
06:32Well, when you've had half a dozen concussions that are documented, you are, not to mention
06:37the ones you've gotten in practice, the ones you've gotten in no lesser hit.
06:41That's right.
06:41I mean, but that's still a thing.
06:43You know, we just, oh, that went away.
06:45You know, my thing with Panics, and it's funny, we're talking to some guys who are watching
06:48on YouTube and on Twitch today, you know, talking about agendas.
06:51Guys, we want a fair competition.
06:53How can you have a competition if one guy can't do the same stuff as the other guy because
06:57of a physical limitation until he's 100%?
06:58That's all we've suggested.
07:00How that somehow turns into us hating on Panics, I hate to say it, you guys are just fanboys.
07:05Some of you guys are like little kids with this stuff.
07:07You want him to win so bad, you have your own agenda with this, and you're not listening
07:11to reason.
07:12We're talking logically about this.
07:14Yes, we like to, everybody, who doesn't like Panics Jr.?
07:17He's a great guy.
07:18He's a rootable person.
07:19There's nothing to root against Michael Panics Jr.
07:22We're just talking about the stark reality of the injury history and how that applies to
07:26trying to play in the NFL.
07:27Well, and we can talk more about this later as well, and you and I talked about it on
07:31the pre-show.
07:32The best thing for this franchise is that Panics takes the job and proves he's the future.
07:37Just from a financial standpoint, from a promising standpoint.
07:40The best thing is that Panics shows he is the guy.
07:42But he's got to be on the field to do that, and we're just waiting to see, waiting for
07:45the team to tell us, hey, he's 100% cleared, ready to roll.
07:48Hey, man, we've got plenty more to dive into, talk about the NFL as the OTAs are rolling.
07:52A-Ron, Aaron Rodgers.
07:54By the way, I met an Aaron today in Publix, in Tyrone.
07:57And again, he had never seen the Key and Peele day-day.
08:00And now everyone calls him A-A-Ron because he finally figured it out.
08:04That was, it's a skit.
08:05But anyway, appreciate him listening, brother.
08:07He works in, I want to say it's, he's a contractor.
08:11Is there anything?
