Surah story
Transcript
00:00Oh Muhammad, we will give you the most beautiful women of Makkah!
00:10We'll pour gold at your feet!
00:15Muhammad, we will even make you our king!
00:19Just worship our idols for one year,
00:23and then we'll worship your Allah the next.
00:27But the answer shook the city.
00:30He said,
00:39You are Kafir. There will be no deal, no compromise.
00:45That day the leaders of Quraysh became furious,
00:48and what followed was pure cruelty.
00:52They announced to all of Mecca,
00:55anyone who follows Muhammad.
00:58No trade, no food, no marriage with them.
01:02A total ban.
01:19A wall of boycott and hunger.
01:23But why did the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, reject their offer of peace?
01:29Why do these surahs begin with the command,
01:32Kul?
01:33Why did he call them Kafirs?
01:35Why did the Quraysh torture Bilal?
01:40Why did they forbid trade and marriage with the followers of the Prophet?
01:44And most importantly,
01:46what does this 1,400 year old surah still teach us today?
01:52If you want to know the answers to all these questions,
01:56watch the full story.
01:58In this video, we will break down this surah verse by verse.
02:02This is the story of Surah Al-Kafirun.

02:39This story is based on true events,
02:42beautifully brought to life with the help of artificial intelligence.
02:46So take a deep breath.
02:49Turn off the noise around you for the next few minutes.
02:54Let's begin.
02:58In our Muslim households, after Al-Fatiha,
03:02the first surahs we teach our children are the four Quls.
03:16But in our society,
03:19how many of us carelessly throw around the word Kafir?
03:22Hey, look, Asma Khatun is drinking juice in Ramadan.
03:27Oh, she's a Kafir.
03:31Look also, Hamza.
03:32He didn't come to Friday prayers today?
03:35No.
03:36Really?
03:37He is a Kafir.
03:38So, what does Kafir really mean?
03:42It means to conceal, to hide the truth.
03:47We often translate it as disbeliever,
03:50but the Arabic root goes deeper.
03:53In ancient Arabia, long before Islam,
03:57the Arabs used the word Kufar for farmers,
04:00and its singular form is Kafir.
04:03Why?
04:04Because a farmer takes a seed and covers it with soil.
04:09In the Quranic sense,
04:11a Kafir is someone who knows the truth deep down,
04:14like a seed in the earth,
04:16but deliberately covers it up with arrogance,
04:19denial, or pride.
04:21Scholars tell us this surah was revealed in Mecca,
04:25during a time when the chiefs of Quraysh were exhausted.
04:29They had tried every torture,
04:31every trick,
04:32and every oppression.
04:34They would shout.
04:36Four days you've been like this.
04:38Just say,
04:40Al-Uzza is your God.
04:44They placed heavy stones on the chests of believers.
04:48They burned their skin with hot iron.
04:51They beat them until the flesh separated from the bone.
04:54Do you still believe in him?
04:59Call your Allah now.
05:02But despite the pain,
05:04the believers did not break.
05:06Ya Allah, please increase my Iman.
05:10Allahu Akbar.
05:12The chiefs realized that violence wasn't working,
05:15so they changed their strategy.
05:18They decided,
05:20If we can't beat him,
05:22let's buy him!
05:24Yes!
05:26Yes!
05:26One chief said,
05:28Our plans are failing.
05:29We called him a poet,
05:31a madman,
05:32a magician.
05:33Nothing works.
05:35Another chief said,
05:36There is only one way left.
05:38We buy him with beauty and money.
05:41We make him our king.
05:43But this failed too.
05:45How can you buy a man who has been granted Al-Kawthar,
05:49which means abundance,
05:51by the creator of the heavens?
05:53So, Walid ibn al-Mughira came up with a master plan,
05:58a plan he thought could not fail.
06:01Walid said,
06:03We need a middle ground.
06:06We can't stop him,
06:08so let's make a deal.
06:09A compromise.
06:12A way where his business runs,
06:14and our business runs.
06:17They approached the prophet with a smile.
06:20Welcome, Muhammad.
06:23We have an offer you cannot refuse.
06:27If you say yes,
06:29then we are all brothers from today.
06:32For one entire year,
06:35we will all worship your Allah.
06:38And in return,
06:39the following year,
06:41you will worship our gods,
06:43Al-Lat and Al-Uzza.
06:45And we will take turns forever.
06:48They continued,
06:50That way, everything will be equal.
06:53No more fighting between us.
06:55If your Allah turns out to be true,
06:58then we will all believe in him.
07:01And if our idols prove to be true,
07:03then the victory will be ours.
07:06At least, they said,
07:08Just touch our idols once,
07:11please, Muhammad.
07:12Just touch our idols once.
07:15Show them some respect.
07:17Maybe ask them for wealth,
07:19or blessings.
07:20That's all we're asking for, Muhammad.
07:23Just one small gesture.
07:26They thought it was brilliant.
07:28Co-existence.
07:30What a beautiful idea, they thought.
07:32What do you say, Muhammad?
07:35The Prophet, peace be upon him,
07:37remained silent.
07:39He stood up and walked away.
07:41His silence made them anxious.
07:44The whole city began to whisper.
07:47Why doesn't he answer?
07:48Ask him again.
07:50But the Prophet, peace be upon him,
07:52does not speak from his own desire.
07:55He was waiting.
07:56Waiting for the command from the heavens.
07:59And then,
08:01the answer came.
08:02It wasn't a negotiation.
08:05It was a verdict.
08:06This surah is known as Al-Mukashqisha,
08:10the remover.
08:11Because it removes shirk from the heart,
08:13like a cure removes a disease.
08:16The next morning,
08:17the Prophet went to the Kaaba.
08:19The leaders were waiting,
08:21hoping for a yes.
08:23Instead, he recited Surah Al-Khafirun
08:26to their faces.
08:27It was a slap in the face of their arrogance.
08:31It destroyed their hope.
08:33They realized Muhammad could not be bought,
08:36intimidated, or tricked.
08:38The line had been drawn.
08:40The truth stood clear from falsehood.
08:44But this refusal came at a heavy price.
08:48Enraged, the four special leaders of Quraysh wrote a document,
08:52a total boycott against the Banu Hashim and the Muslims.
08:56They hung it inside the Kaaba.
08:59The rules were brutal.
09:01No trade with them.
09:02No marriage with them.
09:04No food.
09:05No help.
09:07Until they hand over Muhammad to be killed.
09:11For three years, the Muslims starved in the valleys of Mecca.
09:15Children cried from hunger, eating leaves to survive.
09:19And the torture intensified.
09:21They dragged Bilal onto the burning desert sand and placed a massive crushing rock on his chest, demanding he renounce
09:32Allah.
09:34He only whispered,
09:35Ahad.
09:37Ahad.
09:37Ahad.
09:38Ahad.
09:39Ahad.
09:40They pushed Khabab ibn al-Arat, radiallahu anhu,
09:44onto burning coals until the fat from his back melted and extinguished the fire.
09:50But despite the hunger, the pain, and the isolation, not a single believer traded their faith.
09:57They remembered the lesson of al-Kafirun, no compromise.
10:02Let's understand this, verse by verse.
10:05A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytani r-rajeem.
10:14Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim.
10:20Qul ya ayyuhal-kaafirun.
10:25A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytani r-rajeem.
10:27Verse 1.
10:29O Muhammad.
10:30Say directly.
10:32O Kafir.
10:34Kafir means disbelievers.
10:37Notice the word,
10:38Kul, which means say.
10:41It's not a suggestion.
10:43It's a command.
10:44If that word,
10:45Kul, wasn't there,
10:47the verse would simply read,
10:49O disbelievers.
10:50Or,
10:51O leaders of Quraysh.
10:53Or,
10:54O respected chiefs of Arabia.
10:57But Allah directly calls them Kafir or disbelievers.
11:02Why?
11:03Because the message had to be firm.
11:06Allah knew his prophet,
11:08Rahmatul lil'alamin,
11:10the mercy to all worlds.
11:12His nature was gentle,
11:14filled with kindness.
11:16It might have been difficult for him to use such harsh words.
11:19So Allah said,
11:21Say it, O Muhammad.
11:23This is not from you.
11:25This is my command.
11:27Verse 2.
11:29La a'abudu ma ta'abudun.
11:35I do not worship what you worship.
11:39La a'abudu.
11:41This is present and future tense.
11:43I do not worship them now.
11:46And I will not worship them tomorrow.
11:48No deal.
11:49No compromise.
11:51Not today.
11:52Not ever.
11:54Verse 3.
11:55Nor are you worshipers of what I worship.
12:08This is profound.
12:09They claimed they wanted to worship Allah for a year, right?
12:13Allah calls their bluff.
12:15He says,
12:16You don't actually worship Allah.
12:19Why?
12:20Because worship requires submission.
12:22They didn't want to submit.
12:25They wanted to negotiate.
12:26You cannot worship the one true God while holding on to your idols.
12:31That is not worship.
12:33That is a game.
12:35Verse 4.
12:37Wala ana a'abudum ma abattum.
12:43Nor will I be a worshiper of what you worship.
12:48Here the grammar changes to the past tense context.
12:51Ma abattum.
12:53Allah is saying,
12:55O prophet, tell them,
12:56I have never worshipped your idols in the past.
13:00Even before prophethood,
13:02I never bowed to a statue.
13:05So if I didn't do it when I was young and unaware,
13:08why would I do it now that I have the light of revelation?
13:12Verse 5.
13:15Wala an tum a'abiduna ma a'abudu.
13:23Nor will you be worshippers of what I worship.
13:26It repeats.
13:28Why?
13:29To show anger.
13:30To show finality.
13:32Like when a parent tells a child,
13:35I said no!
13:36Did you hear me?
13:37Did you hear me?
13:39It is to confirm to them,
13:41Stop asking.
13:42The door is closed.
13:44This deal will never happen.
13:54For you is your religion,
13:57and for me is mine.
13:59Lakum deenukum waliyadeen
14:03This is the total separation.
14:05And the word deen here doesn't just mean religion.
14:09As Dr. Zakir Naik explains,
14:12deen means a system,
14:14a way of life,
14:15a final outcome.
14:17It means,
14:18you have your system,
14:20and you will face the consequences of it.
14:23And I have my system,
14:25and I will receive the reward for it.
14:28Ustad Noman Ali Khan said,
14:30You cannot pick and choose in a system.
14:33You cannot say,
14:34I like the prayer part,
14:35but I don't like the inheritance part,
14:37or the business ethics part.
14:40Deen is a package deal.
14:42It is a system of governance over your entire self.
14:461400 years ago,
14:48Surah Al-Kafirun drew a line in the sands of Mecca.
14:52Today, that line still runs through our hearts.
14:56This Surah isn't only about the Quraysh or their idols.
15:01It is about every moment in life
15:03when truth and compromise stand face to face.
15:10So, what does Surah Al-Kafirun teach us today?
15:14First, let's stop throwing the word Kafir around so easily.
15:20Faith and disbelief aren't always black and white.
15:24If someone slips, misses a prayer, or sins openly,
15:28it doesn't erase faith from their heart.
15:31Pray for their guidance instead of writing their judgment.
15:35But the greatest lesson is about integrity.
15:39We live in an age that whispers,
15:41Relax a little.
15:43Hmm.
15:44Adjust.
15:44Blend in.
15:46Everyone's taking interest loans for homes.
15:48Why don't you?
15:49Don't be so strict.
15:51Religion should be flexible.
15:53Modern pressure has a new name.
15:56Compromise.
15:57We're told to be liberal Muslims,
16:00soft enough to fit any crowd.
16:02But this Surah still echoes through time,
16:05reminding us,
16:06you can be gentle,
16:08you can be peaceful,
16:09but you cannot sell your principles.
16:12You cannot trade Allah's commands for acceptance or comfort.
16:17You might be an Abid, a worshiper,
16:20but are you a Abd Allah,
16:22a servant of Allah 24 hours of every day?
16:26Or does your loyalty change with convenience?
16:30Because a half Muslim in conviction
16:32is no different from a follower of shifting gods.
16:36The Prophet, peace be upon him,
16:38used to recite this Surah often,
16:41in the Sunnah prayers of Fajr and Maghrib.
16:44Why?
16:45To remind himself every morning and every night,
16:49I am different,
16:50I have a mission,
16:52and I do not compromise on the truth.
16:54He would also recite it before sleep,
16:57together with Surah Al-Ikhlas,
17:00as a shield from Shirk,
17:02any trace of associating partners with Allah.
17:05Scholars call it Al-Bara'a Min Ash Shirk,
17:10the Surah of Freedom from Idolatry.
17:13Do you know something amazing?
17:15Did you know that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said,
17:18according to At-Tirmidhi,
17:20that reciting Surah Al-Kafirun
17:23is equivalent to reciting one-fourth of the Qur'an?
17:27Why?
17:29Because the entire Qur'an is about Tawheed,
17:32oneness of God,
17:33and this Surah purifies your belief completely.
17:37The Prophet advised his companions,
17:40Recite,
17:41قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ
17:48when you go to bed,
17:49for it is a freedom from Shirk.
17:52Imagine ending your day every single night
17:55declaring your loyalty to Allah.
17:58It protects your soul while you sleep.
