00:00:27Portland
00:00:28Portland has one major professional sports franchise, the Trailblazers.
00:00:39People care here.
00:00:42They care so deeply about the team.
00:00:47They won the championship in 1977.
00:00:55It was immediately transformative, but it's been more than 20 years and there hasn't been that Camelot feeling that they
00:01:05had in 1977.
00:01:07And here came Rasheed Wallace, Damon Stoudemire, and Bonzi Wells.
00:01:14It was this collection of players that in no way, shape or form probably would work.
00:01:19They were immature, petty, but so good.
00:01:23This was the greatest sociology experiment in sports.
00:01:28The biggest opponents the players once defeat are themselves.
00:01:31Rasheed Wallace is the man that Blazer fans are counting on to carry their beloved team to their second title.
00:01:37This was going to be it, the chance to win a championship.
00:01:40Rasheed Wallace has battled the Lakers and sometimes himself.
00:01:43They might have won back-to-back NBA championships. It was set up for them.
00:01:48But it cascaded out of control.
00:01:51Marijuana, cocaine, assault.
00:01:53The longest period without any incident was just 17 days.
00:01:57Jail time for drunk driving.
00:01:59Sucker punched a teammate.
00:02:00I'm a sportscaster. I'm not a crime reporter.
00:02:02For the third time in 16 months, Stoudemire faces drug charges.
00:02:06I'm sure we got a lot of angry fans.
00:02:08This is a technical, and there it is.
00:02:10Technical foul to Ole Wallace.
00:02:12They're an insult to the city.
00:02:13F***ing ass, Tommy.
00:02:14Morphes of them are kind of thugs.
00:02:16You have got to be kidding me.
00:02:17For fuck's sake, can you guys just get out of trouble?
00:02:20It's a full-on fight, and look out.
00:02:22Rasheed Wallace took a swing and a fan.
00:02:24I've never seen a town turn on a team like this.
00:02:26Shame on you, Rasheed Wallace.
00:02:28I know what happened, but this is the only thing I'm going to tell y'all.
00:02:33Yo, I don't fucking know you.
00:02:34I don't care to know you.
00:02:36It's your job to get to know me.
00:02:54How much do you think this advanced operating environment is worth?
00:02:57It's $99. It's an incredible value, but it's true.
00:03:01It's Windows from Microsoft.
00:03:03Order today.
00:03:04Microsoft.
00:03:05Microsoft.
00:03:05Microsoft is the world's largest software company.
00:03:09Bill Gates co-founded his company with his high school buddy, Paul Allen.
00:03:13Paul Allen.
00:03:14Paul Allen is the third wealthiest man in the world.
00:03:17One of Allen's ideas would lead to the personal computer revolution and launch Microsoft.
00:03:22Microsoft's not just the biggest fish in the sea, they're the water we swim in.
00:03:26Allen has spent his wealth on a hodgepodge of many interests.
00:03:32The adventure capitalist now has his sights set on the small town of Portland, Oregon.
00:03:37The Trailblazers announced today they have sold the team to Allen, who is now the youngest owner in the NBA.
00:03:44I bought the team because basketball is one of my real passions and I wanted to be personally involved with
00:03:50a championship quality team.
00:03:52Allen's big move in building a championship team?
00:03:55Hiring the current NBA general manager of the year, Bob Whitsitt.
00:04:01I see my role right now as coming to a great organization and trying to add to what is already
00:04:06very, very good.
00:04:07I'm coming off the best record in the NBA.
00:04:10Whitsitt spent eight years turning the Seattle Supersonics into a powerhouse.
00:04:14Nobody built it better than that.
00:04:17I wasn't so much interested in building an entire organization and selling tickets and educating the market on what the
00:04:26NBA was.
00:04:27And I said, Paul, I really only want to build the basketball team.
00:04:31So, Bob Whitsitt's nickname was Trader Bob.
00:04:35Trader Bob.
00:04:37Trader Bob.
00:04:37Trader Bob.
00:04:38Trader Bob.
00:04:39Trader Bob was an interesting guy.
00:04:42He's computer-like, analytical.
00:04:45He doesn't care much about chemistry.
00:04:47I'm not a chemistry major, I'm a sports major.
00:04:50You have to understand, it's a very difficult thing to be the general manager in Portland.
00:04:56It's Portland.
00:04:57Rainy, wet, tucked in the northwest Portland.
00:05:00Small market.
00:05:01It's viewed as a predominantly white community.
00:05:05NBA players are not interested in that.
00:05:07All you had was the draft and trade available.
00:05:10Trader Bob came in at a time when the Drexler era was ending naturally.
00:05:15The Drexler era.
00:05:16Twelve years.
00:05:18Two finals appearances.
00:05:20But no championships.
00:05:22He had to figure out how to deconstruct and reconstruct at the same time.
00:05:27I went in there today and there was a phone and a computer.
00:05:31I was so excited I went in there and I shut the door and I locked it.
00:05:33With Sonics we did not have computers.
00:05:35We had no technology.
00:05:37If you don't have that computer literacy today, you're going to have trouble succeeding in the next century.
00:05:43The second I got hired by Paul, I had a laptop, I was on email.
00:05:48My world got more efficient, smarter.
00:05:52So Paul said to me, it's my money.
00:05:55Let's go do this at all costs.
00:05:58I want to win.
00:06:04Oh, and by the way, Bob, we're going to be in the playoffs next year.
00:06:09Which signaled to me, you don't have much time.
00:06:15He was looking for value.
00:06:17And so he was taking damaged guys, the guys that had been in trouble.
00:06:27If you did your time, I believe you should get another shot.
00:06:34It's time for a new Trailblazer chapter.
00:06:38I was going to be tested to my limit.
00:06:40Can I clean this guy up, repackage him and turn it into something spectacular?
00:06:47Whether it's draft picks, more cap space, better player.
00:06:56We did all our moves, and Rasheed was my target.
00:07:01After amassing players and picks, trader Bob has made his first big move.
00:07:07Portland has traded for the former fourth overall pick, 21-year-old Rasheed Wallace.
00:07:12My challenge with Rasheed was trying to manage the emotion, the adrenaline, the temperament.
00:07:20You know, certain people play with certain attitudes.
00:07:22You have some guys who get out on the court, and, you know, they're calm and cool and collected.
00:07:27And you have other guys who, you know, they're like, they're full of rage.
00:07:30It's just the competitiveness, and I'm a competitive person.
00:07:33Wallace's first impression raised some eyebrows with his T-shirt that read,
00:07:38Expletive, who you know, we're still gonna kill you.
00:07:41And here they are, at forward, number 30, Rasheed Wallace.
00:07:49I told motherfuckers, yo, I ain't no role model.
00:07:51To my kids, maybe, but I still fuck up with them, too.
00:07:55Well, I was the first one up there.
00:07:57There wasn't none of the glitz and glamour.
00:07:59It was like, we basketball in here, so that's what we preaching.
00:08:03We don't have time for all the other stuff, and I like that.
00:08:06When Rasheed arrived in Portland, it was like someone dropped the base on this franchise.
00:08:16The NBA is desperate for a new face. They may have found it here in Portland.
00:08:20Now, the Blazers are a unique team.
00:08:23Rasheed Wallace, no doubt, and I think he's an emerging superstar.
00:08:26Rasheed was an insane talent.
00:08:30He was temperamental.
00:08:32Rasheed is like basketball's version of John McEnroe.
00:08:35He would scream.
00:08:37He was just so emotional.
00:08:38He could pull up from three.
00:08:41This was long before the three-ball era we're in now.
00:08:44Wallace, he's dynamite on the court, but we desperately need to get him some help.
00:08:49We were looking for a point guard.
00:08:51At 5 feet 10 inches, some people thought that Stoudemire was too small.
00:08:55Damon Stoudemire, rookie of the year, high scorer, hometown boy.
00:09:00Lived here my whole life, played high school ball here.
00:09:03Seems like the Blazer organization is changing.
00:09:05It'd only be fitting to get a hometown kid to start everything off.
00:09:08You get a call from Bob with it.
00:09:11It just happened.
00:09:13Trader Bob is unloading the war chest.
00:09:15He moved three players and three draft picks for Toronto's Damon Stoudemire.
00:09:19He's from Portland.
00:09:21I think they got a good deal.
00:09:22Actually, I'm glad to see him coming.
00:09:23You know, I think it'll help the team out really well.
00:09:26This is the night.
00:09:28Damon Stoudemire, the hometown boy.
00:09:31Back home and in a barrel blazer uniform.
00:09:34He came for the steal.
00:09:35Ryder, smartly held up.
00:09:37Damon Stoudemire!
00:09:39When Damon came to the Blazers, he was hot shit.
00:09:42Stoudemire to Wallace.
00:09:44It clicked with him from the top.
00:09:46With Portland having Rashid Wallace, Damon Stoudemire, fast, quick guy.
00:09:49Six, but four in this quarter.
00:09:53And then Bonzie came along.
00:09:55I got drafted by Detroit.
00:09:56Detroit Pistons.
00:09:57With the 11th pick, the Detroit Pistons select Bonzie Wells from Ball State University.
00:10:04Don't talk about my suit, man.
00:10:05I don't want to...
00:10:08I was going my way back to Detroit and they called me like,
00:10:11well, we're 99% sure we're going to trade you.
00:10:12I was like, oh, Lord, what did I do?
00:10:14Like, what did I do?
00:10:16We're going to Portland.
00:10:17And I was like, Portland?
00:10:18Where the heck is Portland?
00:10:20Portland, Maine?
00:10:21Like, where am I going?
00:10:21And I looked at the map.
00:10:22I was like, man, I'm going way over here.
00:10:24Hopefully we didn't give the coach too many problems bringing in more guys,
00:10:27but we like to try to give them as many guys to work with as we can.
00:10:32Me, Damon, we were the cool kids.
00:10:36When Bons first got to Portland, he wasn't one of the cool kids.
00:10:40And then one game, Bonzie had a little scuffle match.
00:10:45She told me, like, Bonzie, if we don't win the game, let's win the fight.
00:10:49Bonzie went right back at his ass.
00:10:52You know, Bonzie became a cool kid then.
00:10:55We're a bunch of physical guys.
00:10:56People don't really realize that we're real.
00:10:58And we ain't going to let nobody test our manhood.
00:11:00We'll test yours back.
00:11:02The Blazers were a little bit the outlaws.
00:11:04They weren't on brand for the NBA.
00:11:08Dudes were just scared of us because they didn't know what we was going to do.
00:11:11That chemistry was starting to boil together more each game,
00:11:14and that's what we need, and we don't want to get back.
00:11:17Rasheed, Bonzie, them was my boys.
00:11:20There was always us three.
00:11:23We were in the window, but I needed the window to be a lot more solid.
00:11:29I wanted to keep the core, but I wanted to upgrade.
00:11:34And the Lakers were gunning to get Scottie.
00:11:38If Scottie goes to the Lakers, not only do we not take another step up,
00:11:43we're taking a step back.
00:11:48And now, with six NBA World Championships,
00:11:54your Los Angeles Lakers.
00:11:58The Lakers are sort of this Tiffany product.
00:12:01The Lakers are going for it all.
00:12:03This offseason, they brought in legendary coach Phil Jackson from the Chicago Bulls.
00:12:08It used to be Michael and Scottie. Now it's Shaq and Kobe.
00:12:12They had Shaq.
00:12:15I have set myself a renaissance man.
00:12:18Young kid having fun, just, you know, following his dream.
00:12:22Stand out of trouble.
00:12:24And they had Kobe.
00:12:28And they always had stars that moved the needle.
00:12:33There was a great divide between the city of Los Angeles and little old Portland.
00:12:43Portland's not a Porsche town or a sports car town.
00:12:46It's not a real showy town.
00:12:48I mean, it's counterculture.
00:12:52It's sort of a wet Austin, Texas.
00:12:56And it's a one newspaper town.
00:13:00This was a rivalry.
00:13:02We were the underdog.
00:13:05So, I was ready to really put this thing in motion.
00:13:14Scotty told you, flat out, I'll never go to Portland.
00:13:16Yeah.
00:13:18So...
00:13:19A lot of people have been saying, Scotty Pippen's gone.
00:13:21You know what, I don't even miss him to that bull crown.
00:13:23I finally found a button.
00:13:26Gosh, Scotty, you're kind of like the fourth banana.
00:13:29You only won championships with Michael and Phil.
00:13:32And you're only going to go win again with Shaq and Kobe and Phil.
00:13:39Our place, you're going to be the best player, the headliner, and you're going to win it without Michael and
00:13:45without Phil.
00:13:49And at some point, Scotty finally said, let's do it.
00:13:54This team is very talented, and it's very deep, and they have a great chance of winning even without Scotty
00:14:02Pippen.
00:14:03That's about as good as I can do.
00:14:05When he got traded to Portland, if you would have saw the smile on my face back then.
00:14:09We all seen Pipp as young boys.
00:14:12Knew the history.
00:14:14Man, we was like, all right, shit, we got somebody on our team now who's been to the mountaintop and
00:14:19sipped the juice six times.
00:14:21Six rings, man.
00:14:22Whew.
00:14:23His locker was over there, and I'm sitting there, and I'm looking at him.
00:14:25He just looked like a god.
00:14:29Scotty walks in, and he has security.
00:14:32We said, man, take that old Hollywood Chicago shit back to Chicago.
00:14:36Pipp saying, no, no, no.
00:14:38Pipp had security, man, for about four or five days, and man, that shit was dead.
00:14:42Pipp was one of us.
00:14:43We had Scotty getting his hair braided.
00:14:45We had him wearing throwback jerseys.
00:14:46Pipp crazy.
00:14:47He's institutionalized by the Blazers.
00:14:51It's been a long time since Blazer fans have been this excited.
00:14:55Thanks to Scotty, tickets are already sold out for the upcoming season.
00:14:59For us, it was finals or bust.
00:15:02We was trying to win a championship.
00:15:04Scotty Pippen has become the go-to guy on defense.
00:15:07Couldn't tell us nothing.
00:15:07Yeah, we in there.
00:15:09The Lakers were our nemesis, but you still gotta get through the 82 games, and both teams did that.
00:15:15You still gotta get through the first couple rounds.
00:15:17Both teams did that.
00:15:19So now we're staring at each other in the conference finals.
00:15:22We hit them on the ropes.
00:15:30A week ago today, the Lakers led the Blazers three games to one.
00:15:34Only six teams in NBA history have overcome a 3-1 deficit.
00:15:38It's game seven.
00:15:39Ain't nothing else on TV.
00:15:41So you know all eyes gonna be on the game, man.
00:15:44Game seven is a tough ticket to score, but celebrities have their way.
00:15:51We come out and we were smoking.
00:15:54And Pippen pulls up for three.
00:15:56And Portland's off to a great start.
00:15:59It's gonna be Scotty.
00:16:01The Blazers were not intimidated by the Lakers.
00:16:04The Blazers have a comfortable eight-point lead.
00:16:06I remember asking Phil Jackson in that series, how do you stop Rasheed?
00:16:10And Phil Jackson paused.
00:16:12You don't.
00:16:15This young man's counting on him.
00:16:18Tough hook.
00:16:19Inside two minutes to play.
00:16:20To the paint for the slam.
00:16:23And the Lakers have been on their heels the entire first time.
00:16:26We just took advantage of our youth.
00:16:28We took advantage of our bodies that we threw at them.
00:16:30And, but it just felt good for us.
00:16:31Cause we was like, oh man, we, these guys are legends.
00:16:37We didn't fear them at all.
00:16:40Fade away jump.
00:16:42Wallace with 10 points in this quarter.
00:16:44With 23 points for the game.
00:16:46I mean, we was rolling.
00:16:47This is a 15-point game.
00:16:51You see the dreary looks on their faces.
00:16:55I look over at the bench a little bit.
00:16:57I see guys just jumping up and down.
00:16:59It's like, yo, we almost here.
00:17:02Stunning.
00:17:03How big is that?
00:17:04And he's done that for us.
00:17:06So the Lakers bring the ball back down court.
00:17:08We're playing on tough defense.
00:17:10And then.
00:17:12Shaw.
00:17:14Trover shot it and faked it in for.
00:17:16Kinda hit the side of the backboard and then went in.
00:17:18I was like, oh, here go the bullshit.
00:17:20But it's still a 13-point Portland lead.
00:17:24Heading into the fourth.
00:17:25We were up 13 going into the fourth.
00:17:28And they had nothing to answer what we were doing.
00:17:32But then we missed a few shots.
00:17:37We get the great shot.
00:17:38I kind of get on the edge thinking, that's in.
00:17:45We missed four straight shots.
00:17:48Time out.
00:17:49Time out.
00:17:51Now we just gotta make a bucket to break the run.
00:17:56Who gonna make this bucket?
00:17:57But they gotta make a back.
00:17:59These things are.
00:18:00Shhh.
00:18:01Shhh.
00:18:02Shhh.
00:18:03Shit, we need a bucket right here to stop this bleeding.
00:18:05It's Wallace.
00:18:0630 dozen for Portland.
00:18:07Lakers on a 12-ball run.
00:18:09And the problem.
00:18:09Is there a jinx going on?
00:18:11Tiffin' for three.
00:18:12Tiffin' for three.
00:18:13Tiffin' for three.
00:18:13Was it a fucked up game?
00:18:15Shhh.
00:18:17It comes at 75.
00:18:21Tiffin' for three.
00:18:21Yeah.
00:18:22We ended up missing 13 shots in a row at the worst time possible.
00:18:24I missed, like, six or seven of them.
00:18:27But, man, all I remember is that it culminated with the lob.
00:18:31Point to shot!
00:18:35That shit was just over from there.
00:18:37He was like, damn.
00:18:41That's it.
00:18:42I'm gonna throw up the Lakers again as much as they escaped.
00:18:56That's the nature of sports.
00:18:59Sometimes you need a little luck,
00:19:00and on that particular day, in that particular quarter,
00:19:05we had the worst luck.
00:19:08You took time off, and you still, you know, thought about,
00:19:13we gonna get them next year.
00:19:15We gonna run this thing back.
00:19:17And that's when everything started happening.
00:19:29There was so much change going on in the NBA,
00:19:31where the salaries were starting to escalate
00:19:33beyond anybody's wildest dreams.
00:19:36Money got out of control.
00:19:39And so, guys was getting money.
00:19:41We moved into Lake Oswego.
00:19:45The thriving city of Lake Oswego,
00:19:47just minutes from downtown Portland,
00:19:49is centered around Oswego Lake.
00:19:54The large private lake, a boating playground,
00:19:56is surrounded by beautiful homes with stunning views.
00:20:00They were young, rich,
00:20:01and wanted everyone in Lake Oswego to know it.
00:20:04You'd see a nice car, you're always like,
00:20:06that must be a blazer.
00:20:08Right here is where me and the boys play a lot of football at.
00:20:10Over there, where we were at, it was myself.
00:20:13A little waterfall right here.
00:20:15This is real relaxing.
00:20:16Damon.
00:20:17Hi, everybody.
00:20:18I'm Damon Stoudemire.
00:20:19And welcome to my crib.
00:20:21Bonzi was in the little neighborhood, too.
00:20:24It was the rich, white side of Portland.
00:20:28Now, other than my son,
00:20:30I want y'all to see my two babies.
00:20:32There are some people, white people,
00:20:35maybe even some other people of color
00:20:37that don't like seeing young African-American men
00:20:39making a lot of money so quickly.
00:20:41It's like, well, they didn't earn that.
00:20:43It's a 96 Bronco right here.
00:20:45A lot of my teammates called me OJ.
00:20:48A majority of the police didn't want us out there.
00:20:51You definitely got to make sure you're doing a speed limit.
00:20:53I got, in the back, I got a couple speakers.
00:20:56You know, I love music.
00:20:57It gets me pumped up before basketball games.
00:21:00One particular day in the summer,
00:21:02I got pulled over three times in one day.
00:21:07I just never said it out loud,
00:21:08but we used to call it Lake No Negro.
00:21:10Lake No Negro.
00:21:11It's Lake No Negro.
00:21:12It's Lake No Negro.
00:21:13You see so much whiteness there
00:21:15that it takes a little to getting used to.
00:21:19They were used to guys who would come to the games
00:21:23in the suits, Magic Johnsons,
00:21:26the Michael Jordans.
00:21:28Here we come.
00:21:29We're loud boisterous riding around in our big car
00:21:32smoking weed.
00:21:33So we're definitely the opposite of that bullshit.
00:21:38It was the bling-bling era.
00:21:40Everybody was all turnt up with the jewelry.
00:21:42The real Iceman.
00:21:43The real Iceman.
00:21:44We're wearing baggy clothes.
00:21:45Now we're wearing big jerseys
00:21:47and all this type of stuff to pay homage to our past.
00:21:49Our shit was baggy.
00:21:51Fucking Carl Kenei jeans.
00:21:52The guy wears one X, he's got on three X jeans.
00:21:55Jeans, white teeth, hats, Air Force Ones.
00:21:59Portland has its own beat.
00:22:01And those young NBA players had their own beat.
00:22:03And it didn't know it was coincide.
00:22:06It was a culture shock.
00:22:10Here's Michael Thompson.
00:22:13And welcome to the fifth quarter
00:22:14on this Sonic Boom of a Saturday
00:22:16as those booms were heard echoing all the way down here
00:22:19from the Key Arena in Seattle.
00:22:21This was a major game on the schedule tonight.
00:22:24You had the two Northwest rivals squaring off.
00:22:27So driving back from Seattle,
00:22:31we just got finished playing the Sonics.
00:22:33We were so close that, you know,
00:22:36some family members drove up from Portland.
00:22:39So one of Big's guys drives up.
00:22:42So Biggie's my nickname.
00:22:45And I say, yo, Big, shit, I'll just ride back with you.
00:22:49Mark a J up or some shit.
00:22:53Just enjoy the little two and a half hour ride.
00:22:57So we driving.
00:22:59Boom.
00:23:00I roll up.
00:23:01Smoke.
00:23:04Biggs roll up something.
00:23:06You know, he smoke.
00:23:13I'm just saying that was a good time.
00:23:17Just as soon as we finished smoking,
00:23:21Big's guys speeding up.
00:23:24I told my man, I was like, yo, slow down, dog.
00:23:27Like, it's a yellow Hummer, man.
00:23:28Like...
00:23:29He told him twice.
00:23:30He told his buddy to slow down.
00:23:31Yo, slow down.
00:23:32Fucking 11.30 at night.
00:23:33Yo, slow down.
00:23:35You know, so it's just like, man, just drive, man.
00:23:37We got time, man.
00:23:38We ain't rushing.
00:23:39Yo, slow down.
00:23:39Right when Damon told him to slow down...
00:23:43Dude!
00:23:44We get pulled over, and I was just like,
00:23:47man, ain't this about a bitch, man.
00:23:49And so it obviously still reeked a little bit of the weed.
00:23:52Where's the weed at?
00:23:53Oh, I smell it.
00:23:54We smoked it.
00:23:55Man, we don't got nothing.
00:23:57Ain't even really talked to the guy who was driving.
00:24:01Just talking with me and Damon.
00:24:02You know, I heard a dude in the car,
00:24:04like, when they was on the dispatcher.
00:24:06That's Damon Stenberg and Rasheed Wallace.
00:24:08Like, I'm listening.
00:24:09Are you gonna threaten us?
00:24:10Oh, we'll bring the dogs out.
00:24:12Tear the car apart.
00:24:14Man, they got the dogs on jump through the car.
00:24:17They ain't find shit.
00:24:18Nothing.
00:24:18All they found was fucking crumbs in the car.
00:24:21So me and Damon standing on the side of the road,
00:24:23we like...
00:24:25Dog, who comes down the road?
00:24:29The fucking team bus.
00:24:31I'm like, man, are y'all serious, man?
00:24:33I'm like, is that a yellow Hummer?
00:24:35Is that...?
00:24:36The slow-mojo, it's like, you know,
00:24:38when you're watching the movies, it's just...
00:24:43All slow motion.
00:24:44I swear that's how that bus rode by.
00:24:47And I could just read everybody's face on there.
00:24:54I'm like, damn.
00:24:56Man, I just can't believe this shit.
00:25:01We end up, they give us a speeding ticket.
00:25:04Big's like, man, you think this shit gonna be on the news or something?
00:25:07I'm like, dog, it's routine.
00:25:10She's like, man, ain't nothing gonna happen.
00:25:11I said, yes, it is, man.
00:25:12They're like, man, what you talking about?
00:25:14It's gonna be on the news, bruh.
00:25:16Like, all right, bet.
00:25:17Go home.
00:25:17Go to sleep.
00:25:24I wake up to my wife hitting me.
00:25:26Get up!
00:25:27Get up!
00:25:28What'd you do?
00:25:29What'd you do last night?
00:25:31What happened?
00:25:32Whoa, whoa, what you talking about?
00:25:33I ain't do nothing.
00:25:34I just woke up!
00:25:35I'm like, yo, what are you talking about?
00:25:39Just before midnight, Stoudemire and Wallace were pulled over for speeding.
00:25:44This morning, they've been cited for marijuana possession.
00:25:47Yo, Mike, really?
00:25:50Centralia Police's canine unit, Bach, came out to check the car for drugs.
00:25:55All over the goddamn TV, man.
00:25:57Teammate Rasheed Wallace were cited for pot possession.
00:26:00Damon Stoudemire and Rasheed Wallace for marijuana possession.
00:26:03I think they should be disciplined for it, definitely.
00:26:04We actually had a pretty long talk about drugs today as a result of it.
00:26:08Athletes should live by the same standards as the rest of us.
00:26:10Mother call, father call, you're all on the radio.
00:26:13Okay, next caller, you're on the air.
00:26:15Baby smoking all this weed is why we missed so many shots.
00:26:18When you wake up this morning and you learn about that, it's very frustrating.
00:26:22It's very disappointing.
00:26:23It's unfortunate.
00:26:24That's poor examples for a lot of people and young kids who look up to them.
00:26:29So, it's too bad.
00:26:31Nowadays, we know so much about NBA players.
00:26:34I'm chilling in the bed, you know, at the time I'm married.
00:26:36My wife's there with me.
00:26:38Chappelle's show came out the hottest fucking shit on TV.
00:26:41And every time I do something sweet or cool, I would...
00:26:44Jordan!
00:26:47So, they said a couple NBA names, so it's ha-ha-ha.
00:26:51Kobe.
00:26:53And he come into a car that's full of smoke and taps on the glass.
00:26:58You're under arrest.
00:27:00And when Charlie Murphy rolled that window down and said,
00:27:04Rashi Wallace.
00:27:05It was that one!
00:27:08My wife was like, yo, that shit ain't funny.
00:27:11Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da.
00:27:12In my head, you know what I said to myself?
00:27:15Mama, I made it!
00:27:17I made it, yes.
00:27:19But no, I was crying, like...
00:27:23Just kept rewinding.
00:27:24Rewinding.
00:27:26I just can't get mad at this shit.
00:27:27It's comedy.
00:27:28Like, it's funny shit.
00:27:30Nah, fuck that.
00:27:31Fuck this show.
00:27:32I'm like, nah, you can't say that.
00:27:33I'm like, this nigga's funny right here.
00:27:35Yeah.
00:27:42Being from Portland, I never wanted to play the race card
00:27:45because I had as many white friends as I had black friends.
00:27:49You know?
00:27:50So it wasn't in my face.
00:27:53Right?
00:27:54And so I was all right with that.
00:27:56And even as I was with the Blazers, I still don't think...
00:28:00I still don't think that stuff was racial.
00:28:04There were racial undertones, but I wasn't calling it racial.
00:28:10But there was one time that I was particularly bothered.
00:28:19I come home, I was like...
00:28:25Somebody been in my place.
00:28:28I live by myself.
00:28:30There was things that just was out of place.
00:28:33So I was like, man, this is just weird.
00:28:36Like, this is weird.
00:28:38Like, this is weird.
00:28:39Like, this is weird.
00:28:40And an hour later, the police came to my house.
00:28:45Police were called to Stoudemire's home here in Lake Oswego
00:28:48after something tripped the home's burglar alarm.
00:28:50Officers responded to a burglar alarm
00:28:52and entered the home without a search warrant.
00:28:54Once inside, sources tell us that the police began searching the home
00:28:58and found one pound of marijuana behind an attic access door.
00:29:02They broke into his house saying that something about his alarm was going off.
00:29:07So they went into the house to check to see if it was any burglars and this and that
00:29:13and came across this marijuana.
00:29:16And now he's under arrest.
00:29:18I'm like, man, get the fuck out of here with that bullshit.
00:29:21I was like, you know, y'all got to talk to my lawyers.
00:29:24My lawyer did his homework and, you know, I had to go turn myself in.
00:29:30According to the Clackamas County District Attorney,
00:29:33a Lake Oswego police report contains allegations of felony drug possession
00:29:37against Damon Stoudemire.
00:29:39First degree felony.
00:29:40It had me like I was a drug dealer and all the different stuff.
00:29:45Any comment from your parents, Damon?
00:29:48How you holding up?
00:29:48After posting the $50,000 bail, the Star Point guards sprinted home around 2 in the morning as reporters swarmed.
00:29:57This case will be presented to a grand jury for their consideration.
00:30:01I just couldn't understand why they would treat a hometown kid that way.
00:30:05This has been difficult, but, you know, I'm going to hang in there and I'm going to be fine.
00:30:12Flanked by attorneys and his father, Trailblazer star Damon Stoudemire walks into court facing a felony drug possession charge.
00:30:21It's very hard for players to come home and play in their hometown.
00:30:24You're dealing with the scrutiny of a tremendous spotlight on you.
00:30:28Very, very intense.
00:30:30You're on the only stage in town and people are judging you unrealistically.
00:30:41I wanted to be someone that inspired, like, everybody in the neighborhood and the people around us coming up like,
00:30:48man, we can be seen on TV too.
00:30:50I wanted to be a role model.
00:30:54Even though Stoudemire has yet to be proven guilty, the damage is already done.
00:31:00I don't know if they'll look at him the same way.
00:31:01He just...
00:31:03I don't...
00:31:04I don't know.
00:31:04I don't...
00:31:05He's not my role model.
00:31:06Not anymore.
00:31:13Throughout the day, arguments from the defense and prosecution were heard.
00:31:17But in the end, it was the police who committed a crime.
00:31:22A Portland judge ruled that the entry into Stoudemire's home was illegal.
00:31:27I feel like the police was trying to find something.
00:31:30They was trying to make an example of somebody or another.
00:31:36You can go in somebody's house because you got a badge and just go in there when they gone.
00:31:40Any comment, Damon or Steven?
00:31:42No.
00:31:43No comments today.
00:31:44Thank you very much.
00:31:44I was like, man, this is not it for me.
00:31:48Like, I used to be around there paranoid.
00:31:51Man, it got bad.
00:31:53And so I never went back to the spot and I just sold it.
00:31:56A lot of this stuff, this is the first time that I'm even saying anything.
00:32:00It's like therapy.
00:32:01That's why I never...
00:32:02That's why I stayed away from home.
00:32:04Some people are like, man, why you stay away from home?
00:32:06I was like, man, I'm like, it's weird old stuff.
00:32:20It's so hard to build a team and climb the mountain.
00:32:26You don't get close very often and when you get to taste it, it makes you want to have it
00:32:31even more.
00:32:33I told Paul, this is the year.
00:32:36When we lost to the Lakers in 2008, that could have went either way.
00:32:40Run it back.
00:32:41Give us one more year to kind of figure it out.
00:32:43Let's go back to the drawing board.
00:32:45We was this close.
00:32:45I will say this and I'll say it today and I would have said it 40 years ago and I'll
00:32:52say it 10 years from now.
00:32:54You need to be innovative.
00:32:56You need to stay young in your thinking.
00:32:59You need to be ahead of the curve.
00:33:01I guess what I'm saying is don't break it if it's not broken, but if you stay status quo, you'll
00:33:09never get ahead.
00:33:10In a flurry of moves this August, Trader Bob has retooled one of the best rosters in the league.
00:33:15Yeah, he brought in a couple extra veteran players, got rid of some of the glue to the team, some
00:33:20of the glue to the bench.
00:33:21The biggest fish is undoubtedly the three-team deal that brought Trader Bob's former Seattle Sonic star, Sean Kemp, to
00:33:30Portland.
00:33:30Bob drafted me, so we had always stayed in touch and had conversations.
00:33:34You know, it just shows you that he wanted to win that bad.
00:33:38And I think that's what excited me at the time.
00:33:41Sean Kemp.
00:33:43Now, we don't need to go too much into Sean Kemp's reputation or exploits.
00:33:48This week, Sean Kemp publicly addressed the issue of his chronic lateness and irresponsibility.
00:33:53He denied speculation that he had a drinking problem.
00:33:56Here's what you need to know.
00:33:57Kemp was drafted by Witsip.
00:34:00He was a former all-star.
00:34:04And I underlined former all-star because he was carrying so much weight that he could barely dunk.
00:34:10He was overweight.
00:34:12He didn't have the same game he had before.
00:34:14But I'm willing to risk that in a second.
00:34:16Can I roll seven again?
00:34:18I think that's the key to success.
00:34:19You have to keep pushing forward in an aggressive way, knowing that not everything you do will work out.
00:34:25You begin to suspect that they have a type instead of a plan.
00:34:29He's getting on the court.
00:34:31He tries to find Rasheed Wallace.
00:34:33He heads up here.
00:34:36Rasheed Wallace quickly gets him back under control.
00:34:39No, he doesn't.
00:34:40Surprise, surprise.
00:34:41A technical on Rasheed Wallace.
00:34:42This is just unbelievable by Rasheed Wallace.
00:34:44One thing we were trying to manage during our championship window was one of our best players that we needed
00:34:52to stay on the court was getting many more technical fouls than he should have gotten.
00:34:59Portland's biggest problem all season long has been trying to find a way to keep Rasheed Wallace in the games
00:35:04and under control.
00:35:04That was more of a loose cannon.
00:35:07I wouldn't necessarily say I played with hate, but I'm trying to go at your neck.
00:35:13He trash talk officials more than he trash talk other guys.
00:35:19Somehow he's got to control himself.
00:35:21Now some nights, I might call him, you know, a couple curse words or some shit like that.
00:35:26Yeah, for sure.
00:35:27Risks a technical, and there it is.
00:35:29That's another 7-6 technical.
00:35:31Technical on who else but Rasheed Wallace.
00:35:34And he's out of the game.
00:35:36Rasheed Wallace in a 30-point game gets a technical foul here.
00:35:39That's embarrassing.
00:35:41What other nights is just look at him, hmm, oh, technical.
00:35:47Whack, get out.
00:35:49Come on, cut that shit out.
00:35:51Well, Doug, can he get tossed for looking at a guy funny?
00:35:54People were okay with him battling emotionally for the game.
00:35:57And even getting technicals because we didn't like the refs either.
00:36:01But he would never shut up.
00:36:03And it could cost him a possible chance at a championship if he does not control his emotions.
00:36:07Dr. John Givi is a sports psychologist.
00:36:10He says Rasheed's behavior crosses the line.
00:36:13His conduct at this point is detrimental to him, detrimental to his team.
00:36:20When you're known for yelling in custody at the referees,
00:36:23sometimes people lose faith in you.
00:36:26They look at you like you're the problem.
00:36:28Recently, Wallace was at the airport when a mother and son came asking for an autograph.
00:36:33I held out my magazine and my pen.
00:36:34He shook away and said no.
00:36:36I ripped the picture of Rasheed out of the magazine and crumpled it up and I threw it at his
00:36:41feet.
00:36:41He threw it right back and hit me in the face and said, ooh.
00:36:45Fuck it.
00:36:47I might as well say how I feel.
00:36:48We got the nod that Sports Illustrated was coming and doing an article on us.
00:36:53The controversy centers around the latest Sports Illustrated article where Bonzi Wells is quoted as saying,
00:36:59we're not really going to worry about what the hell the fans think about us.
00:37:03They really don't matter to us.
00:37:05They can boo us every day, but they're still going to ask for our autographs if they see us on
00:37:09the street.
00:37:10That's why they're fans and we're NBA players.
00:37:14It reflects an arrogance that this team has taken this town for granted.
00:37:18It was a hot topic.
00:37:19You know, you just can't go public in that way.
00:37:23The Blazers had lost the fan base.
00:37:25When you say things like that, it really doesn't inspire people to really even want to go and see the
00:37:30game.
00:37:30Fans are the stockholders.
00:37:31They're the customers, you know, and it's ridiculous to spit in the face of fans.
00:37:35These fans turned on me like...
00:37:40That didn't help the cause. It doesn't help anybody's cause.
00:37:43It's a stupid quote. I mean, what else can you say?
00:37:47The fans were fed up.
00:37:48They were already fed up with some of the stuff that was going on.
00:37:51Like the yellow hammer, smoking weed.
00:37:54There were problems and red flags and issues, especially with Sean Kemp.
00:38:01Trader Bob's big signing is ending his season early.
00:38:03Sean Kemp has entered rehab for cocaine abuse.
00:38:06Scottie Pippen said that the acquisition of Sean Kemp was the worst move ever in the history of pro sports.
00:38:12That's kind of making a bullseye at your general manager.
00:38:15We all want to be known as winners, but sometimes it just doesn't happen.
00:38:19We were aggressive. Made sense. I failed.
00:38:31I feel like the alignment was all the way messed up.
00:38:35After a promising start, the Blazers finished the season going 15 and 17.
00:38:39The team's in a lot of turmoil, I think, right now.
00:38:41They're always losing and I'm wondering why.
00:38:42The drug rehab slam dunk from Blazer Sean Kemp has left fans wondering about the championship.
00:38:48I think it's just an atrocity.
00:38:50We got to pull the loser.
00:38:51Then we get the damn playoff who we see first round Lakers.
00:38:56Blazer turnover and here comes Bryant, front court, moving quickly.
00:38:59Throws to Shaq and he dunks it.
00:39:01Blazers want to travel on Bryant. They don't get it.
00:39:04Final score.
00:39:05The Lakers 99, the Blazers 86.
00:39:08L.A. wins the series, three games to none.
00:39:12We got swept.
00:39:14And so it was just one of them things, man, you just want to decompress, you know,
00:39:17because the way the year ended, it was just like, man, this is crazy.
00:39:20You had local Portland media bitching and complaining, some of them punks.
00:39:25I just got tired of all my shit just getting misconstrued.
00:39:30So it's like, man, stop fucking with y'all, period.
00:39:33Do you consider yourself a role model to all the fans that show up in the games?
00:39:36Carbine, why don't you?
00:39:38Why you aren't talking?
00:39:39Because your reporters only report negativity.
00:39:52Yo, I don't fucking know you.
00:39:54I don't care to know you.
00:39:56It's your job to get to know me.
00:40:02He didn't appreciate how the media in Portland was portraying him.
00:40:11I understood, because I remember walking into the locker room.
00:40:18Almost all white reporters, Jeffriano at the Oregonian.
00:40:21The Oregonian has black reporters?
00:40:24He's like, yo, you mind if I do a story on you?
00:40:27You know, it's not going to be about a lot of the negativity.
00:40:31I'm like, all right, no problem.
00:40:36He said, do you mind if I record and write everything you say?
00:40:41I'm like, no, I ain't got shit to hide.
00:40:43I'm not trying to sugarcoat nothing.
00:40:46You just say it.
00:40:47Now, the part that did surprise me, I didn't know he was going to put all the motherfuckers and niggas
00:40:51in there that I said, though.
00:40:58I thought it was an opportunity to get to know him and for others to get to know him, not
00:41:04the Rasheed technical foul, not the Rasheed screaming at the referees.
00:41:08There was another side.
00:41:11You don't know where I come from.
00:41:12You don't understand me at all.
00:41:14You want me to be that good Martin Luther King.
00:41:19As great of a person he was, I'm not Martin Luther King.
00:41:23I'm more in that spirit of Omega Evers or Malcolm X.
00:41:31He's not going to conform.
00:41:33He just wasn't going to do that because that's not who he is.
00:41:35And one of the things I always respected about Rasheed was that he was who he was.
00:41:44Some people think the pin is mightier than the sword.
00:41:46Here's the thing.
00:41:47The pin isn't mightier than right.
00:41:50The article in the Oregonian titled Raw Sheed has caught the attention of many across America.
00:41:56The article even made its way to the office of NBA commissioner David Stern.
00:42:00Mr. Wallace's hateful diatribe was ignorant and offensive to all NBA players.
00:42:08You're entitled to your opinion, but don't go overboard with it.
00:42:12You know what I'm saying?
00:42:13I'll respect your opinion no matter what it is.
00:42:15You call me a fucking nigger and all this and that.
00:42:18All right.
00:42:19You said your piece.
00:42:22Keep it moving.
00:42:23Because if you keep reiterating shit and reiterating things and trying to come back at me.
00:42:28All right.
00:42:28Well now.
00:42:30Yeah.
00:42:30The nigger going to come out.
00:42:41When things started shaking and crumbling.
00:42:45Everybody said we need a cultural change.
00:42:48So instead what they did is double down.
00:42:56I'm a fan first.
00:42:58And as a fan I want my team to win.
00:43:01And I told everybody we got to stop the Lakers.
00:43:06He's known as the Kobe stopper.
00:43:08The Kobe stopper.
00:43:09The Kobe stopper.
00:43:10The Kobe stopper.
00:43:10He didn't back down from Kobe.
00:43:12I'll tell you that.
00:43:13He played Kobe hard.
00:43:15Kobe even said that.
00:43:18Bob's like we're not a free agent market.
00:43:20We don't have top five picks.
00:43:22I'm trying to effing beat Kobe and Shaq.
00:43:25I got to get players in length.
00:43:27And those teams won't get Reuben Patterson.
00:43:30There's no one answer as to what you look for with any one player.
00:43:36Trailblazer Reuben Patterson.
00:43:38The NBA's first registered sex offender.
00:43:41There are people that deserve second chances.
00:43:44And Reuben is definitely one of those people.
00:43:45And I think as an organization we're open minded that way.
00:43:52You know his transgressions happened with another team.
00:43:58At another time.
00:44:00Patterson's victim was a 23 year old woman we will call Jenny.
00:44:04In January 2000 she was hired by Patterson's fiancee Shannon as a nanny.
00:44:10She told police Patterson forced her to perform oral sex.
00:44:16I'm not saying it was the greatest signing we ever did.
00:44:19I'm not suggesting that at all.
00:44:20I'm saying when we did it we weighed a lot of factors.
00:44:24But the real risk honestly was a certain amount of cash.
00:44:33You had a registered sex offender in a Blazers uniform.
00:44:37You were holding him up as part of the team.
00:44:40That's not good.
00:44:41Like you can't do that.
00:44:42You can't be that franchise that's okay with that at any cost.
00:44:46Fine day isn't it?
00:44:47The Blazers public relations department in the midst of an aggressive campaign aimed at reconnecting with the fans.
00:44:53Has pulled the plug on its current TV ads.
00:44:56The focus now is damage control.
00:44:59I'd like to have a team that I could really stand behind and really be proud of.
00:45:01I don't feel that way.
00:45:03I think we need like kind of a role model.
00:45:04A new good guy for the Blazers because more of some of them are kind of thugs.
00:45:08And that came in fucking the chemistry up of the team.
00:45:12And yeah I would say that's the only time that I truly, you know, could say was mad with Bob
00:45:19or a little upset with Bob.
00:45:22Since the trade for sex offender Reuben Patterson, the antagonistic on court behavior and drug incidents with multiple players,
00:45:30the front office has received numerous calls from fans, some of them hoping to cancel season tickets.
00:45:37With Reuben, what's the need to bring in somebody with this history?
00:45:41I don't think there's a shortage of guys in the league who occupy Reuben Patterson.
00:45:46Well let's stop there.
00:45:47You're wrong.
00:45:48Go back at that time in that free agent class and tell me who all those players are.
00:45:57And I'll be the first to say you're right.
00:45:59So I'll wait right now for you to start listing those players.
00:46:04And you won't have them, okay?
00:46:06And if his character was such, he did not act up at all while he was in Portland.
00:46:17I was in Arizona going to school, you know, get my degree.
00:46:22So, I'm going to New Orleans.
00:46:24This is the Tucson International Airport's security screening area, and this is where Damon Stoudemire ran into trouble.
00:46:31According to the Sheriff's Department report, Stoudemire removed a package wrapped in aluminum foil before he walked through a metal
00:46:38detector.
00:46:39Sheriff's deputies searched Stoudemire, finding 39.95 grams or 1.4 ounces of marijuana.
00:46:46I had to go to David Stern's office.
00:46:48David Stern sits across from me now and he'd be like, don't fuck my league up now.
00:46:52For the third time in 16 months, Stoudemire faces drug charges.
00:46:56I just wish they'd stop getting in trouble because I was tired of fucking covering news conferences about non-basketball.
00:47:04Well, Portland's Rasheed Wallace has tied the NBA record that he set last season.
00:47:09It's a bit of a dubious distinction. 38 technical fouls.
00:47:12Somebody should go and tell Rasheed Wallace to sit down and just be quiet here.
00:47:18I thought that it was at times a lack of awareness for when and when not to on his behalf.
00:47:27This is a major problem for this franchise with so much pride and dignity and class to have this young
00:47:33man, this star with an $80 million contract setting a record for technical fouls.
00:47:39Ended up leading the league, so that record still stands to this day.
00:47:43Setting a league record for technical fouls, throwing a towel in the teammate's face, these are not criminal offenses.
00:47:50The biggest opponent the Blazers must defeat are themselves.
00:47:54This is sports, but in the end, you are perpetuating the legacy and you're perpetuating that brand.
00:48:01And we all know how strong a brand can be, and unfortunately, the Blazers brand got pushed in that direction,
00:48:06and the momentum never stopped.
00:48:08Trader Bob's latest draft pick, Zach Randolph, was arrested Tuesday morning for underage drinking.
00:48:13Look, not only does Bob Whitsitt trade for problematic players, Bob Whitsitt is almost an addict now drafting problematic players.
00:48:23Making matters worse, instead of fighting for a playoff spot, the team seems to be fighting with itself.
00:48:29Zach Randolph sucker punched teammate Reuben Patterson during a practice.
00:48:32Officers note they found two loaded handguns in the car, one with a bullet in the chamber, and say Randolph
00:48:39smelled of marijuana.
00:48:40When Bob made another deal with a player that had had troubles, it was like, ugh, ugh.
00:48:45It's been a rough week for Quintel Woods.
00:48:48Monday, he watched detectives and animal control officers search his home for evidence of dogfighting.
00:48:53I'm a sportscaster, I'm not a crime reporter.
00:48:56Spills and Bonzi Wells pushing and shoving.
00:48:59It's a full-on fight, and look out!
00:49:01The benches have cleared.
00:49:03Rasheed Wallace took a swing at a fan.
00:49:05The fans were pouring something on him.
00:49:08I think they're an insult to the city.
00:49:09I have no interest in them winning.
00:49:11I just assume they lose.
00:49:17What's your name?
00:49:18Sam, my husband is Reuben Patterson.
00:49:20All right.
00:49:21And is he still there?
00:49:22Yeah.
00:49:23Where is he?
00:49:24But I need to leave.
00:49:25He just tried to...
00:49:30At the Washington County Courthouse, Blazer Reuben Patterson met his probation officer to discuss his latest arrest.
00:49:37Patterson faces felony domestic assault charges after an altercation with his wife Monday night.
00:49:43I don't want our players even in a situation that makes us even have to talk about it.
00:49:50That's what bothers me right now more than anything.
00:49:53A visibly frustrated Bob Whitsitt told the media today,
00:49:56I take all responsibility for anything that happens with the Portland Trail Blazers.
00:50:01The timing, the city, it just kind of all went together, and it hit all at once.
00:50:07After charges of drugs, dog fighting, loaded guns, and assault, the team is now being called the Jail Blazers.
00:50:15That was just the beginning of the end for myself, Rasheed, and Damon in Portland.
00:50:19Some say the Blazers' criminal record off the court is causing the team's lowest attendance at the Rose Garden ever.
00:50:27For the third straight year, the Blazers are facing the Lakers in the playoffs.
00:50:32What was once a matchup between two ascending teams has turned into two teams headed in two very different directions.
00:50:44A woman and her eight-year-old stepson were thrown out of the Blazers' playoff game yesterday.
00:50:49It all had to do with a sign they were holding.
00:50:52This is the sign.
00:50:53Catherine Topaz and her stepson, Will Abels, say they had to leave at the half
00:50:58because they aren't fans of the team's general manager.
00:51:01Will believes there's only one reason he had to leave.
00:51:05I think it was Bob Whitsitt.
00:51:10It was a real rollercoaster ride for us.
00:51:14And, boom, we fast-forward to next year.
00:51:17I wasn't talking to the media.
00:51:20Rasheed was getting fined for not speaking to the media.
00:51:24And the numbers started to get big.
00:51:26The Blazers' forward was fined $10,000 for failing to cooperate with the media after Sunday's game
00:51:32and another $20,000 on Monday.
00:51:34I was getting bombarded by the league.
00:51:36It's my job to make him talk.
00:51:39I don't know why it became my job, but it is because I'm the guy in charge.
00:51:43So I'd start meeting with Rasheed.
00:51:45Well, if you don't say nothing to the media, Rasheed, you're going to get fined.
00:51:48I'm like, all right.
00:51:49He understood, but he also made it clear I don't like them.
00:51:53I would fucking love to go to they job right now and heckle the shit out of them.
00:51:58Boo, you can't ride.
00:52:02You can't ride.
00:52:04Oh, what?
00:52:05You didn't put the abbreviation right there where it was supposed to be?
00:52:08No.
00:52:08So now the Blazers are also getting fined.
00:52:12The league said next move is we're going to suspend Rasheed.
00:52:17So that's even more money and we'll fin the team.
00:52:20But now, Rasheed, if you get suspended, you're hurting the team.
00:52:25Well, how about this, dawg?
00:52:27You want me to say what you want me to say?
00:52:28Have your secretary write up a dictation and I'll say what you want me to say since you want to
00:52:33put words in my mouth.
00:52:35If a media person says, hey, I heard your teammate got arrested for speeding last night on the highway, what
00:52:41do you think?
00:52:42You don't have to answer that question.
00:52:44You just simply say, both teams played hard.
00:52:48Both teams played hard.
00:52:49So sure enough, I guess that registers.
00:52:53So now I'm watching the post-game press conference.
00:52:57Great.
00:52:58He's at the podium.
00:53:00That's all I needed.
00:53:01And here come the questions.
00:53:03It was a good game.
00:53:05Both teams play hard.
00:53:06So I kept saying that through the whole joint.
00:53:08Both teams play hard.
00:53:09She don't talk to the media.
00:53:11Both teams play hard.
00:53:12Both teams played hard.
00:53:14So somebody asked another question.
00:53:17He was like, both teams play hard, my man.
00:53:20Both teams play hard, my man.
00:53:21This boy damn fool.
00:53:24God bless and good night.
00:53:25We got fined for that.
00:53:29God bless and good night.
00:53:31God bless and good night.
00:53:44God bless and good night.
00:53:46He's out.
00:53:49Nash out to Novitski.
00:53:50He's open.
00:53:51He got it!
00:53:52But where is Bonzi Wells and Rasheed Wallace?
00:53:55They have phoned this one in.
00:53:58It was pretty busy.
00:54:00Before and after games.
00:54:01People coming in, having a good time.
00:54:03Excited.
00:54:04And now what's it like?
00:54:06We don't really have too many people coming in excited anymore.
00:54:09And for the third straight year, the Blazers' season ends with a first round playoff loss.
00:54:16I was like, man, the window up.
00:54:18Fans say the problem starts in the front office.
00:54:21Get rid of Witsett while they're at it.
00:54:22I think they should fire Bob Witsett.
00:54:24It's not...
00:54:25He's made a lot of...
00:54:26He gives away good players.
00:54:33The owner, Paul Allen, was one of the wealthiest men in the world.
00:54:38One day, he bought the Seahawks.
00:54:42Paul says, oh, and by the way, but you, Bob, have to be the president and run the team.
00:54:48And I go, I can't do that.
00:54:50I'm running all your businesses in Portland.
00:54:54What started out as just going to Portland only to run the basketball side.
00:55:00I'm now running all of the Blazers basketball, the Rose Garden Arena, you know, a WNBA team, radio stations, all
00:55:08kinds of businesses in Portland.
00:55:11And I'm the full-time president of the Seahawks.
00:55:16Eventually, I said to Paul, this is dysfunctional.
00:55:19I've told you, you need more people running these things, and you won't do that.
00:55:24So this is my last year in Portland.
00:55:29So long, Trader Bob.
00:55:31The beleaguered GM announced he's stepping down today.
00:55:34When I left, we averaged 50 wins a year for nine years and made the playoffs every year.
00:55:39What an accomplishment for the Portland community.
00:55:42Most fans we spoke with are happy to see Witsit go, but Ken Body has the perspective of two former
00:55:48Blazer fans.
00:55:49One who was on the inside, and another who feels she was pushed out.
00:55:54I thought it was about time, but should have been done some time ago as far as I was concerned.
00:56:00The last 40 or 50 years in the NBA, there's only been three teams that have a moniker.
00:56:05You got the showtime Lakers.
00:56:10Then you got the bad boy Pistons.
00:56:15And then you got the jail Blazers.
00:56:19Mr. Witsit didn't get Portland. He didn't get it.
00:56:23The whole idea of community and what we want in the team.
00:56:26You can't have a moniker with a bad team, a lousy team, a non-playoff team.
00:56:33You got to have a team that's really good, has some personality, has some excitement.
00:56:40I think the majority of Portland would rather have a team maybe that's not winning and have a bunch of
00:56:44people that we can't support.
00:56:46By far the biggest regret I have for my time in Portland is that we didn't get to hang the
00:56:52championship banner for our fans.
00:56:54That's what haunts me.
00:57:00The Blazers was moving into a different phase.
00:57:05Paul, he had for the most part turned into an absentee owner.
00:57:09Then they got rid of Witsit and put John Nash in there.
00:57:13A new era begins today.
00:57:16New GM John Nash met with the press at the team's practice facility.
00:57:20For right now, what you see is what you get and we're kind of pleased with where we stand.
00:57:26We were in training camp.
00:57:28Sheed walked in.
00:57:29He was just waving bye to everybody.
00:57:31Bye.
00:57:32Bozzie starts saying bye.
00:57:33Dane.
00:57:33I'm like, what you talking about Sheed?
00:57:35I said, you see that motherfucker right there standing next to Moe?
00:57:38That motherfucker's about to trade me.
00:57:40I'm like, man, what you talking about?
00:57:42He was Sheed's general manager in D.C.
00:57:44He'll trade me before he'd trade one of y'all.
00:57:47Started getting everybody some dap, the little bro hug.
00:57:50I'm like, yo, I'm out of this bitch.
00:57:51I'm gone.
00:57:55And what happened?
00:57:57John Nash traded my ass up out of there.
00:58:03We recognized that at some point in time that the Portland Trailblazers and Rasheed Wallace were gonna have to part
00:58:09ways.
00:58:10Yeah, that's all she wrote.
00:58:16Next thing you know, I'm at the crib.
00:58:18Dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun.
00:58:20Bonzi Wells, guard forward, traded to Memphis Grizzlies.
00:58:24They didn't give me the courtesy to call me.
00:58:26They didn't say nothing to me.
00:58:27They just, I found out on SportsCenter.
00:58:33Memphis' Bonzi Wells is making his first return to Portland tonight.
00:58:37How do you feel about coming back, Bonzi?
00:58:39It's good.
00:58:40What do you expect from the crowd tonight?
00:58:41I don't.
00:58:43I never left home before in my life until I went to Portland, Oregon.
00:58:46That's 2,500 miles away from Indiana.
00:58:48I turned into a man out there and then it gave up on me.
00:58:51And that hurt me more than anything.
00:58:56The last of the Mohicans, man.
00:58:59We had a totally different group of guys.
00:59:03You know, I finished out the year and I made the best of it.
00:59:06Which it was fun because, you know, I got a chance to help the young guys and shit like that.
00:59:11But, like I say, man, I was checked out.
00:59:18Damon Stollemire!
00:59:24Sometimes, partying ways is the best.
00:59:26It's this time.
00:59:28In that last game, it was just like, a little tear come to my eye.
00:59:33Because I'm like, man, these people tried to break me.
00:59:41I won't say I was ready to get it over with, but I was ready to close that chapter.
00:59:49New fresh start.
00:59:51Was excited.
00:59:52Detroit had a good team.
00:59:54And I was like, shit, we could probably be some good contenders in about a year or two once we
00:59:59really get to know.
01:00:00Little did I know.
01:00:03Detroit Pistons have just shot the Los Angeles Lakers.
01:00:11He was meant to be there.
01:00:13I was happy for him.
01:00:15At least one of us got to, you know, get that feeling.
01:00:19It was joyous.
01:00:21It's what I came into the NBA to do, is to win a championship.
01:00:25And I think for me, it made it sweet because we beat the Lakers.
01:00:30And for the Lakers, it truly will be the end of a particular era.
01:00:34They plan to appreciate it.
01:00:36I was jealous, you know, being honest.
01:00:38I'll keep it real. I mean, but I was happy.
01:00:40Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for him.
01:00:41But when I saw him smiling with teammates, that wasn't me.
01:00:46Man, I just feel like we should have done that with him.
01:00:49Rasheed Wallace!
01:00:53He put a little more swagger into an already very confident team.
01:01:03When I went back to Portland after we won it, I knew I was gonna get booed.
01:01:09I didn't think I was gonna get booed like that.
01:01:12I was like, damn.
01:01:13And everybody on the Pistons, we cracking up.
01:01:15They like, man, damn, she, they really hated you out here, huh?
01:01:18And this and that. I was like, dog, I'm telling y'all.
01:01:21Y'all just don't know what I've been going through out here.
01:01:25This sociology experiment did not work.
01:01:28The message was, we're going back to our roots.
01:01:31We're pivoting. Character matters all of a sudden.
01:01:34This is really about reclaiming the brand and the trailblazers for Portland
01:01:39and the great fans of this community.
01:01:41You go from trailblazers to jailblazers.
01:01:44That moniker was very catchy.
01:01:47But Damon, Bonzi, and Rasheed,
01:01:52they didn't go to jail.
01:01:54And most of these things, they were fined or released or there was no charges.
01:01:59Basically, to me, it came down to conformity.
01:02:02Why aren't they doing what we want them to do?
01:02:06Now, if they had won a championship, maybe the fans would say,
01:02:11well, we'll hold our nose and clap for them,
01:02:15but we can't forget all the things that they did.
01:02:18But they didn't win it, so that's why not being a fan,
01:02:21none of them have come back to the Rose Garden.
01:02:26Do you think they'll ever get to a point where they'll invite them back or no?
01:02:30Nope.
01:02:31Why?
01:02:32They'd rather forget that era altogether.
01:02:41Good morning. Happy Tuesday, everybody. Hello.
01:02:43We just had big breaking Blazer news.
01:02:46The Blazers have announced a Rip City reunion with members of the 1999-2000 Portland Trailblazers.
01:02:55Dude, that team could have won a title.
01:02:56The last time a Blazer team made me cry.
01:02:59This place looks so different to me now.
01:03:02It used to look like home to me now.
01:03:03I just look like I'm just such a visitor here.
01:03:05You know, I used to know these streets from back side to side.
01:03:07I knew where to go.
01:03:08I knew where to eat.
01:03:12And I was just like, man, this looks so weird to me.
01:03:15Are we cool with Bonzi? Is there water under that bridge?
01:03:19We hated him at the end when he was a Blazer.
01:03:21Yeah, he flipped us off.
01:03:23Yeah, it didn't end well.
01:03:25It didn't really end well for any of them.
01:03:30To the people who didn't support me and wanted me gone, fuck them.
01:03:36I left.
01:03:37Yeah, and you're still mad.
01:03:39You know, I'm not mad.
01:03:41You're still mad.
01:03:42So, sleep on that one.
01:03:47Hey, my boy!
01:03:48What's up, family?
01:03:49Man, we back.
01:03:51What's up, buddy?
01:03:52What you up here doing?
01:03:53Oh, man, it's getting my mind right.
01:03:55You getting ready?
01:03:56Here I am, man, coaching in college.
01:03:59Coaching kids.
01:04:00On the highest level.
01:04:05I've been through some shit.
01:04:07And so it makes it a lot easier for them to understand me,
01:04:11because it's not cookie-cutter for me.
01:04:13You know?
01:04:14Because I wasn't perfect.
01:04:15And as I tell them I wasn't perfect, just Google me.
01:04:18I wasn't perfect.
01:04:19You can Google me.
01:04:20I don't know, man.
01:04:21I'm getting older.
01:04:22I get all nostalgic.
01:04:24You know, I'll be thinking back to a lot of stuff,
01:04:26and it's going to be interesting to see how them people
01:04:28receive us over there at the arena tonight.
01:04:33I'm excited, but I hope that we'll receive the right way.
01:04:37Right.
01:04:37You know, that's my biggest thing.
01:04:38I hope we'll receive it the right way.
01:04:49Fans, it's a Rip City reunion here at Motor tonight.
01:04:52As we celebrate the 1999-2000 Trailblazers team.
01:04:56I'm honored to have representatives at the front office and team here tonight.
01:05:00So let's reintroduce them to you now.
01:05:04So, Bob Whitsitt.
01:05:06I think most people in Portland would consider him the black sheep.
01:05:10I see Bob a little different.
01:05:12He had an open checkbook, and he did what he thought he needed to do to bring a championship.
01:05:18Chapter manager, Bob Whitsitt.
01:05:23There's a human element to everybody.
01:05:26I'll be honest, I haven't shared this to you, but I only did this for you.
01:05:35And the reason I did it for you is because you grew up here.
01:05:40You learned a lot of your first year.
01:05:44You know, I think that this meant a lot to you.
01:05:47Yeah.
01:05:48You almost got me in tears over here, bruh, because, you know,
01:05:51that Sports Illustrated thing killed my career.
01:05:53It's been 20 years that I've been trying to change my narrative on one person at a time.
01:05:59Bonzi was misunderstood his whole time in Portland.
01:06:02The man never got in trouble.
01:06:04He got a couple quotes that they hung on to.
01:06:08For whatever reason, they lumped him in.
01:06:10Number six, Bob Whitsitt!
01:06:19It's just almost like, not closure, but it just makes you kind of like,
01:06:22okay, let me let go and move forward.
01:06:24You know, let me let go of the past hurts and all that stuff that we went through.
01:06:27We didn't have the personalities of the teams that came before us.
01:06:30We had our own personalities and our own identity,
01:06:33and I think that made us the group that we were.
01:06:35Number three, Dan!
01:06:43It wasn't easy coaching this group back here.
01:06:46We had, we had a lot of, we had a lot of egos that we had to put to the
01:06:51side
01:06:52to come together for one common goal, and that was to ultimately try to win a championship.
01:06:56We did not succeed that, but some of the best years that this franchise has had was with this group
01:07:03of gentlemen right here.
01:07:04And once they came to hit the group, we got a handful of reasons, for this group of Ma'am.
