Rick and Ron take restoration by the horns when they agree to revive a vintage mechanical bull. Can they stay steadily astride this rough ride or will they be ...
Transcript
00:04Up next on American Restoration.
00:06What kind of yard sale do you go that you find a flippin' bull?
00:10I don't know if any number of safety precautions is gonna help Ron.
00:14Two, one.
00:15Oh, man!
00:16This thing's awesome.
00:18I came down to get my Pepsi cooler restored.
00:20It's a 1940s Gullwing because of the Gullwing doors.
00:23That's one rare Pepsi cooler.
00:26It's a 65 Ford.
00:27I've been wanting to restore a truck for myself for a while now.
00:30How do you think I'm gonna get my dad to be able to buy this for me?
00:33Hey, Dad, I know I'm gonna get this.
00:35Remember back in the day when things were made by hand and people took pride in their work?
00:41My name's Rick Dale, and I bring these things back to life.
00:46Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:50There's no owner's manual for what we do, but there's no job we can't handle.
01:09Ron just got a call from his buddy Bill about an item he has that he might want to get
01:13restored
01:13as a surprise for his dad.
01:15I can't wait to see what he's got.
01:17What's up, Bill?
01:18How you been?
01:18Rick, good to see you.
01:19You too.
01:19Ron?
01:20I invited Ron and Rick out here to take a look at a mechanical bull, see if it's worth
01:24restoring.
01:25That is a mechanical bull, and we picked up at a yard sale.
01:28What kind of yard sale do you go to if you find a flipping bull?
01:31Ron, what the hell are you doing?
01:33I'm right!
01:35Woo!
01:36Yee-haw!
01:37Most people know about mechanical bulls from Western-themed bars, but they were originally
01:42designed for rodeo training, so that cowboys could learn to ride without getting trampled.
01:47So this is the buck position.
01:48This is going to come up in the air.
01:52We plugged that thing in, you'd be on the floor.
01:57How much do you think you'd trust to restore it?
02:00You would have a new skin on there, and it'd look a little more like a bull.
02:03All the motors will be redone, all new belts are going to be done, everything is going
02:07to be right around 25-5.
02:10And I get to see him on it.
02:13You get to see him probably falling off of it.
02:15I'm going to ride the hell out of this thing.
02:19I know my father's been wanting to get it restored.
02:21With him being in Idaho, it'll be a great time to get the mechanical bull done, and when
02:25he gets back, it'll be a nice surprise for him.
02:27I'll do it if you make this thing look badass.
02:29I'll know.
02:30All right, you got it.
02:32Badass.
02:33Badass it is.
02:34I can't wait to see the bull restored, working, and bucking around off.
02:38Ready?
02:38One, two, three.
02:46Perfect.
03:00God, that's awesome.
03:03I've been wanting to restore a truck for myself for a while now.
03:06Brett Lee, I think I finally found the one.
03:10How's it going?
03:12Well, it's going good.
03:13I got breakfast.
03:14Is it warm?
03:15You look pretty jolly.
03:16I know.
03:17I am jolly.
03:17Look at this.
03:18It's a 65 Ford.
03:19It's like the same year as yours.
03:21After helping Brett Lee rescue his Chevy from the scrap heap, I figured it'd be cool to
03:25restore my own truck.
03:26How do you think I'm going to get my dad to be able to buy this for me?
03:28I don't think he's just going to buy me a truck.
03:30Dude, you're graduating high school.
03:32Tell him to get you a graduation present.
03:35Say, I don't want a laptop, Dad.
03:36I'm not going to be doing homework.
03:38I'm going to be driving my truck.
03:40All right?
03:41That's a good idea.
03:42All right.
03:43Shotgun.
03:43As soon as my dad gets back from wherever he is, I'm going to ask him if we can take
03:47a look at this beauty.
03:56Man, that's awesome.
03:58That's one rare Pepsi cooler.
04:01Hey, Rick.
04:02How you doing?
04:02How you doing, Wayne?
04:03How you been?
04:03Good.
04:04Good to see you.
04:05Man, this thing's awesome.
04:06I came down to Rick's Restorations today to get my Pepsi Go Wing cooler restored.
04:11Yeah.
04:12Okay, okay.
04:14I'm an owner of a fly fishing shop.
04:16Our store has a vintage theme.
04:18Rick's restored two Coke machines for us before, and that Pepsi cooler's going to fit just perfectly
04:22where we want to put it.
04:24It's a 1940s Go Wing because of the Go Wing doors on a Mercedes.
04:28Oh, okay.
04:29So with it open and double doors, that's how it got its name.
04:32And this is stamp lettering.
04:33This isn't just a decal on here.
04:35Nowadays, you go to a place and you just see a square thing, but this stuff here, it's
04:39all steel.
04:40It just says a lot.
04:41I love working on anything Pepsi or Coke related.
04:44I mean, heck, it's my specialty.
04:47And this cooler is really neat and really rare.
04:51The upper body work is not too bad.
04:53It's basically the bottom.
04:54And I can see a rust line of five inches running all the way down the side.
04:57This has a piston-type compressor in it.
05:00It cools efficiently, but at the same time, if you put it in a house that's got a wood
05:04or a tile floor, it's going to sound like you've got a V8 sitting in your room.
05:09Well, I want to keep it quiet and I want it to run efficient.
05:11So we're going to go ahead and replace that one.
05:14Okay.
05:15So we'll put an updated version of the compressor inside there.
05:18It'll run very efficiently.
05:19So what do you want this thing to look like?
05:21You know, I want to make it really pop.
05:23I like some color with it.
05:25I'm not real sure if I'm real king on the white.
05:27Yeah.
05:28So maybe the Pepsi Blue would look great.
05:30Pepsi Blue is, to me, is beautiful.
05:32And it does pop.
05:33The lettering on there ends up going to white instead of the red.
05:36So we'll tear it apart and pull the liner out.
05:38Once we get that out, the rest of the unit is going to end up going to sandblast.
05:42Ted will start in the artwork after I'm done painting it blue.
05:46Then the biggest thing is I'll have to build you a compressor.
05:48So with all that said and done, restoration on this is going to be $4,500.
05:55Ooh.
05:58Well, I tell you, I think the machine's very, very unique.
06:02And I like to get it done.
06:07Awesome.
06:07Thank you, Rick.
06:08Let's go in the office and we'll take some of them little green things you got in your wallet.
06:12Wayne's a regular customer, and I know he collects, so I really count on his business.
06:17We're going to have to make doubly sure we make this rare cooler really shine.
06:25Let's get the lids off.
06:29While I have Tyler and Brett Lee tearing down the Pepsi Gullwing cooler,
06:32Kyle and Ron are going to figure out if we need a total overhaul on the motors for the mechanical
06:36bowl.
06:37This thing's going to be awesome, dude.
06:39Looks like one of the motors makes a bull buck, and the other makes it turn.
06:42And the second motor needs a new belt.
06:44I want to try this motor first, because it's not hooked up to anything.
06:47Hit it.
06:49Holy .
06:51It's supposed to spin that fast?
06:53Dude, that's going to be kicking ass.
06:55Let's see where's my other one.
06:58We got to hit this?
07:00Yep.
07:03Holy .
07:04Both motors are working.
07:05Now we need to put a belt on the motor that makes it spin, and we'll see how it goes.
07:09Let's see what it does.
07:22That's awesome, dude.
07:24Give me soap.
07:32Dude, I never thought I'd be taking a picture of a fake bull's ass.
07:38This bull is on there pretty well.
07:41Brett Lee and I are taking the mechanical bull body off the bucking mech.
07:44It's fastened with a lot of bolts, because they didn't want to get loose when a cowboy was riding it.
07:49But that makes it a real bear to remove.
07:52It's going to be heavy.
07:55Woo!
07:57Woo!
07:58Woo!
07:59Woo!
08:00Woo!
08:01Woo!
08:05Woo!
08:05Woo!
08:06Woo!
08:06Now that I've got the mechanical bull torn down, I've convinced my dad to look at this 65 Ford truck
08:10I really want to buy.
08:11I've just seen pictures so far, but I'm totally sold.
08:15See, I told you it was bad ass.
08:17I don't usually like leaving the shop when there's so much going on, but Tyler seems really interested in seeing
08:23this truck.
08:24Hey.
08:25I'm Rick.
08:26Rick.
08:26Eric.
08:26Good to meet you.
08:27My son called about your truck.
08:29Oh, okay.
08:29He said you got it for sale.
08:31Okay.
08:31Right on.
08:31He came here.
08:32He told me to come check it out.
08:33I'm selling this 1965 Ford F-100.
08:36It's a short bed, which is pretty rare.
08:38They're referred to as slick 60s.
08:40I'm selling it just because I had a couple other projects, and if I sell this, it'll help me expedite
08:44the other projects.
08:45I started in on it, and I wanted to get it sitting on the ground, so I bagged it.
08:49I four-linked it.
08:50So four-link, what's four-link?
08:51Four-link is the rear end.
08:53I can jump up here and take a look.
08:55They're link arms.
08:56Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:57Basically, it's an 18-inch Z-frame.
09:00And you do that to get it on the ground?
09:01Get it to lay all the way down.
09:03I've set this truck up to cruise across the pavement at about a half-inch clearance.
09:07That's what you're wanting to do?
09:08Yeah, that's so sick.
09:10It's like all four to me.
09:11I would never have slammed something on the ground.
09:14It's all about how low you can get them.
09:15My dad doesn't seem that enthused so far.
09:18It may not be his kind of truck, and it is going to need a lot of work, but I'm
09:22ready to drive this thing away right now.
09:24Tyler, I see a ton of work, and you want $2,500 for this?
09:28With the amount of fab work that I've done to it, the four-link and the suspension and the bags,
09:33and, you know, to me, it's not that far off.
09:35It's all there.
09:36I don't know, Tyler.
09:36I mean, it's a lot of money.
09:38There's so much work in this.
09:39How'd that start out?
09:41I'm pretty sure it was this color, and it looked about the same.
09:44And how long did it sit in the yard?
09:45For how long with a not-running engine?
09:47You end up having 13 years?
09:49But now it's done.
09:50And I know how impatient you are.
09:52Well, let me sleep on it, talk to him a little bit tonight, and I'll give you a call.
09:56All right.
09:57All right.
09:57Thank you very much for showing up here.
09:59No problem.
09:59Nice to meet you.
09:59Great meeting you.
10:00All right.
10:00Take care, guys.
10:02Thank you, sir.
10:02All right.
10:02Hope to hear from you.
10:03Yes.
10:04I think my dad should like the fact that I want to take on a project like his truck, and
10:08it's not going
10:08to take me 13 years to finish.
10:10Two or three at the most.
10:12Maybe four, but definitely not 13.
10:21Wow, this thing's pretty awesome.
10:23I just got back from checking out Tyler's dream truck.
10:26Now it's time to tear down the mech of the mechanical bull.
10:29There we go.
10:30It allows the operator to change the speed and direction of the bull's movement.
10:34It's like speed controls.
10:36It's supposed to throw your timing off because a bull doesn't buck the same way all the time.
10:40So what it's doing is it's showing three different speeds.
10:43The bottom one is slow, and the next one's a little faster, and the next one's fastest.
10:47And if you turn all three of them on, you'll full blast.
10:50Well, we need to get that thing taped off real good because, you know, when Brentley tears
10:54into it, we don't want to mess that up.
10:55We'll duct tape it really, really well.
10:57You know, it's got that plastic on it, so when he's blasting, it'll bounce off.
11:00Some of the moving parts are very delicate, so we have to protect them.
11:03The effort that we put into figuring out this mech is going to pay off big when we end
11:07up putting it back together.
11:08In the meantime, I've got to find somebody to reupholster the body with some real cowhide.
11:13When all's said and done, this thing is going to be badass, just like the customer asked for.
11:18Yo, cowboy!
11:28With the bodywork and primer finished on this 1940s Pepsi cooler, it's ready for me to paint.
11:34The piece was originally white with red lettering, but the customer wants to paint it Pepsi blue
11:38to make it stand out in the store.
11:40This thing is really going to pop.
11:51How's it coming, T?
11:52Good.
11:54Okay.
11:55You know, the reason why I had you do it really, really rough is because I want to use a
11:58new product.
11:58The base of the mechanical bull needs heavy-duty protection,
12:01so I'm going to have Tyler spray it with a product that's usually used to line truck beds.
12:06If somebody falls off this, it's not going to chip and nick the paint, you know?
12:09As soon as the spur or something goes down, the next thing you know, somebody's going to ding it.
12:13You're going to lightly coat everything.
12:14You stand back a little ways.
12:15You're going to have to give it a coat, and then you come back and give it another coat.
12:19I got it.
12:20My dad thinks he has to teach me everything, but I've got this covered.
12:23I've never used this stuff, and it does look pretty thick and gnarly, but paint's paint.
12:27Let's see how you do.
12:36Make sure you get good coverage.
12:40Thanks, Dad.
12:42I need to make more.
12:52Isn't this the, um, the gold wing?
12:54Gold wing.
12:55The gold wing.
12:56Because of the doors?
12:57All the pieces of the Pepsi gold wing have been restored, rebuilt, and fabricated.
13:02Now what we've got to do is put it back together.
13:05Right there.
13:06I got this.
13:25Hey.
13:25Rick.
13:26Good to see you.
13:26Good to see you.
13:27What's going on?
13:28I came to Rick's Restorations today to pick up my 1930s gold wing Pepsi machine.
13:32It was just a mess, so I can't wait to see it.
13:36All right.
13:36You ready to see this thing?
13:37I am.
13:38You remember how it looked?
13:39I do.
13:41Okay.
13:41Here we go.
13:42One, two, three.
13:44Whoa!
13:47Is that the same machine?
13:49Yeah.
13:50Holy smokes.
13:51That is just gorgeous.
13:53Come over and check it out.
13:54Whoa.
13:55The look of this machine, when I first had it revealed to me, just popped.
13:59I could not believe the hand details on the decals, the pop opener, the catcher.
14:05It looks amazing.
14:07Rick, you've got to tell me, how did you transform this?
14:10What all did you have to do to get this looking like this?
14:13Well, the body was rusted out.
14:15It had some spots.
14:16When I took the bottom off, it was really rusted, so we had to do quite a bit of bodywork.
14:19And then on the cap catcher, you know, you can see it's sort of designed to the contour of the
14:23cooler.
14:24So it's got a crease right through here.
14:25It's very important, this crease is here, and it's designed in a way to where it slides in and out.
14:30It didn't have anything there before.
14:32Yeah.
14:32Yeah, so this thing slides in and out.
14:34That's where you put your cap.
14:35And these bottles on here are all hand-painted.
14:37Wow.
14:38Total.
14:38Then on the inside, it's come up like this.
14:41Okay, just like a gull-wing car in the era.
14:43Right.
14:44And then, so this all here is all gets cold now.
14:46Everything in here.
14:47We went and put new seals on here, polished all these hinges all up.
14:51These are the original hinges on here.
14:52They were all bent up.
14:53We straightened those out.
14:54And then we made you some shelves, and these are basically to store bottles on, too.
14:59Nice.
15:00Rick just overdid himself on this thing.
15:02It just blew me away to see it.
15:03The detail work that he did, the hinges, the hand-painted decals.
15:07Rick did an amazing job.
15:09It definitely just jumps out at you.
15:11So the big question is, how did we do on the budget?
15:15I'm a little concerned about that.
15:17Well, you know, as far as the budget's concerned, we made it.
15:22Oh, that's beautiful.
15:25That even makes it even better.
15:27That's why.
15:28I thought we were going to go way over on this thing.
15:31That's just amazing.
15:32I cannot wait to get this home and just show all my friends, show my customers.
15:37It's going to look amazing in the shop.
15:40I really appreciate it, Rick.
15:41Thank you very much.
15:42It just sounds like you're happy, and you being happy, that's making me happy.
15:45Thank you very much.
15:46Thank you very much.
15:46You bet.
15:47Let's go ahead and go in the office, take care of the paperwork, and then I'll have somebody
15:51help us load that.
15:52Perfect.
15:53Okay?
16:02Sorry, Heineke.
16:03I'm stealing your hay.
16:05It's either that or we break Ron's neck.
16:08God, that's heavy.
16:09My dad has asked me to make a test dummy for this mechanical bull, just in case Ron gets
16:13too scared and he doesn't want to ride it, so we can still show the customer that it
16:17really works.
16:23We're flapping in the wind.
16:24We're flapping.
16:26The mechanical bull is ready to buck, so we're taking it back to the ranch to surprise Bill's
16:30dad with it.
16:31And I'll be surprised if Ron actually goes through with riding it.
16:35You getting excited?
16:36You're excited.
16:39Keep them closed, keep them closed.
16:41Not yet?
16:41Yeah.
16:42Not yet?
16:42Rick and Ron came down today to return the mechanical bull they've been restoring for me.
16:46This is going to be a real surprise for my father.
16:48I'm really excited to see it myself, too.
16:50Ready?
16:51Uh-huh.
16:52One, two, three.
16:54Oh, man.
16:55What the hell?
16:56Oh, my goodness.
16:57What is that?
16:58That's a new bull, man.
16:59Yeah.
17:01What do you think?
17:02It looks good.
17:03It looks good.
17:03Awesome, huh?
17:04Yeah, awesome.
17:05It was really impressive.
17:07I couldn't believe how good a job they did.
17:09Down to the last detail.
17:10This hide looks great from what it was earlier.
17:13This really gives it the look.
17:15Also, when you're riding it, this is really as slippery as a bull, too, you know, right?
17:18Because it's real.
17:19And then in back, we went through everything on the bottom.
17:22See the motor's all been rebuilt?
17:24The belts?
17:24The grand spanking.
17:25Right.
17:25Everything's all new.
17:26This is basically sort of a fiberglass material.
17:28We stripped it all, and then we painted it with this real heavy industrial bed lining.
17:33So, what do you think, Bill?
17:34How do you like it?
17:35Rick, this thing looks brand new.
17:37It looks great.
17:37You did a great job.
17:39The only thing we got left to do is plug it in.
17:41That's right.
17:41Pop, do you want to ride it?
17:42No.
17:43Come on.
17:43Let Ron ride it.
17:46Let Ron ride it?
17:46Yeah.
17:47I get to control it, though.
17:48Ron and I go way back, and he's got me in trouble more times than I'd like to talk about.
17:53So, to get him on top of that bull, I really, I'm looking forward to that.
17:57Oh!
17:58Hey.
18:01All right.
18:02You ready?
18:03God.
18:04Son of a biscuit.
18:06Got to have a cowboy hat, and I'll find my ride this thing.
