03:55ate better than a meet and greet
03:56he he he he he
03:58he he he well talk to me about the difference here between songs you feel
04:02like you had to make in the past and then songs that we're getting nowadays
04:04that sounds so good and they're songs you want to make
04:07I think I think it's quite evident you know even in me performance or even in
04:13situations like this that I just feel a lot more comfortable what I'm doing now
04:16and I think cuz what I knew with One Direction was you know chasing radio
04:22and getting as big a moment as possible
04:24that's kind of all i really knew
04:26so that was my expectations
04:28albeit unrealistic but i didn't know that at first
04:30you know so i kind of had to work that out
04:32but isn't it i mean i just said
04:34from the outside looking in i feel like
04:36the music you're giving us right now between
04:38we made it and also kill my mind these are songs
04:40that only you can sing
04:42i like that i like that
04:43you know what i'm saying though whereas
04:45you know you're being so honest to allow me to be honest
04:48is that i feel like in the past you've had
04:50great solo songs great songs
04:52you want to dance you get up oh you're right i know what you're about to take
04:54but please carry on carry on
04:56no you're right louie's like i like this honestly
04:57yeah yeah i'm enjoying this
04:59but you know maybe they weren't maybe there was the potential
05:02for it to be performed by somebody else
05:03and what i'm saying a little bit more generic
05:05a little bit and i completely agree with that
05:08i completely agree with that you know and that
05:10to a certain degree was me chasing radio
05:12you know and and kind of making something
05:14that was safe and that i thought
05:16was gonna fit onto radio and especially with
05:18that steve song you know i love and respect
05:20steve and i love that song and it's a special
05:22song to me but sonically it never really i can't relate
05:26to those sounds you know so
05:28in the end i just saw i just thought if i'm gonna
05:30do this you know and it takes up a lot of my
05:32time obviously i need to do something i need
05:34to do something i really love so i feel good about
05:36that now you almost feel that
05:38you had to go through those
05:40songs to get to these songs
05:42yeah definitely i think it's you know i
05:44i i've learned a lot on the on the
05:46job really and that was one of those situations
05:48where i do think i had to go through
05:50that stage of writing working with like
05:52specific producers that maybe weren't right for
05:54me now but at the time i had to learn
05:56from that you know i mean so much has changed
05:58i mean really as we go around the room you can
05:59all probably think of how much your lives
06:01has changed how much our lives has changed
06:02you know since you know what four or five
06:05years ago why is that funny
06:06yeah they're funny aren't they these look
06:09but no truly on a serious note
06:11so we've gone through so many personal
06:13experiences in your life have there been
06:15person experiences over the past few years
06:16or since being in the group that you feel
06:18have enabled you to sort of find your
06:21voice more clearly
06:23um i've always been pretty good at
06:25standing up for myself and getting me
06:27how way to a certain degree
06:30um thank you you're a lot of funny aren't you
06:33um so but i think i think what i've learnt
06:35mostly about being out on my own which is
06:37kind of an extension of what you just said
06:39is i've learnt to trust me gut more
06:41and and you know i've said in a few
06:42interviews there's a lot of opinion around me a lot
06:45of people have you know a lot to say about
06:46what they think i should be and i just got
06:48standstrong and say no this is who i am
06:50really yeah that's awesome please am i
06:54gna get a round of applause every time
06:56yeah like that like that
07:01um you you did something cool uh on spotify
07:04and you may have done on other services
07:05but i i saw 28 songs this cool playlist
07:07you put together it's like songs that i
07:09guess you dig right yeah absolutely
07:10yeah i'd love to just run through it a
07:12little bit just not the whole 28 songs
07:14but some of these uh artists only if we
07:16could um that are on there just why you
07:19put them on i think of uh like the
07:21vampire weekend what do you like about
07:22those guys amazing amazing yeah i've seen
07:25em live two or three times now every time
07:26at festival um but i think first festival
07:30i ever went to which was leeds festival in
07:32england and who's been you lot been no
07:36oh right okay she almost fell off the stage
07:38that's a bit of an anticlimax innit
07:41um yeah vampire weekend we're playing
07:42there i think so uh amazing band amazing
07:45band and that song cousins i all i've
07:46always loved that from being young used
07:48to play at the indie club near us so
07:50that's great and also just in general
07:52for the playlist um it's been really
07:54fun for me to kind of show the fans
07:56exactly what i like listening to and and
07:58you know there's other people there's
07:59people who've come up to me and said i've
08:01never heard of this song before this
08:02artist before and you know it's on your
08:04place and it's cool or whatever and yeah
08:05and that's probably cool for me you
08:06know what i mean educating um and then
08:08the final artist i just wanted to ask
08:09you about because i love that you
08:10included her on your playlist was amy
08:12winehouse is what she means yeah yeah
08:15um i've always been amazed by uh amy
08:18winehouse you know incredible incredible
08:20writer and i often talk about her level
08:22of detail in lyrics because i'm a
08:24lyricist i like you know i like my lyrics
08:26and the level of detail that she goes
08:28into i heard on a documentary that when
08:30something happens poignant in her life
08:32she notes down all the detail around her
08:34what she can see what she can smell what
08:36she's wearing all these things so you'll
08:38know them at a later date if you come
08:39to write about it and i just think that
08:41level of detail is what makes it so
08:43genius do you have any tactics like
08:45that when you songwrite that are unique
08:47to you you feel um i'm not sure about
08:49unique to me i'm always trying to be as
08:51conversational as possible um someone
08:53like alex turner i love his lyrics
08:55because they're kind of every time yeah
08:57um yeah like his lyrics just kind of
09:00conversational and almost sounds that you
09:03you don't really hear on the radio
09:04right i've been in sessions where
09:05people want every single syllable to
09:08sound right you know i mean and i think
09:10sometimes you've just got to go from
09:12your heart and yeah and the energy in
09:14the room you know i mean absolutely i
09:15think you agree right we're trying to
09:17set the world record for applause in an
09:19interview yeah i know wow we're doing
09:20well um now i thought it was
09:23interesting that you were in a cover
09:24band at a fourteen fifteen years old
09:26yeah yeah what sort of songs were you
09:29covering back then well i think we were
09:32we're more of a tribute than a cover to
09:33be honest we only ever we only ever
09:35covered green day songs this is a
09:37complete contrast and oasis in the same
09:41band in the same band yeah yeah what a
09:44set list am i like the set list existed
09:46of about five songs we did it in
09:49rotation you know what i mean mix in
09:50between them but that's actually where
09:53definitely where i got the hunger to
09:54perform felt good after that first
09:56performance at school you know i mean it's
09:57at school like a school assembly a bit
09:59like this and then is this true i was
10:03reading recently that that in school
10:05you're a bit of a class clown i was
10:07shocked by that louie i was shocked well
10:10yeah when i mean a little bit now as
10:13well but when i was younger i do like
10:14shoff a bit make people laugh you know
10:15yeah definitely yeah well that hasn't
10:18changed yeah yeah um another thing in my
10:21research is that you're really into
10:22cereal yeah like cereal it's top yeah yeah
10:25yeah and so if cereals getting a clap it
10:28all well i know right food oxygen so you
10:35know we have so many great fans here that
10:37wanted to ask you a question of course
10:38we don't have time for that so i thought
10:39what would be a cool way we could
10:40incorporate everybody and so i know
10:42they're not coco pops but we did get you a
10:44box of coco puffs that are signed by all
10:47these fans so if you want to check out
10:49that right now i heard that's your
10:50favourite cereal is this is this good
10:52information about it yeah absolutely
10:53yeah absolutely and i'm not gonna make
10:55you eat it don't worry but there's some
10:56nice messages what a sick idea what a
10:58sick idea that's good that cool yeah
11:00yeah very cool raise your hand if you
11:02sign that so uh who knows or no no and
11:05what's wrong with you like you just didn't
11:07fancy it no exactly all right okay
11:09that's amazing that's amazing all right
11:13well now that cereal's out of the way you
11:14mine if we talk about waltz please yeah
11:16this is so exciting January we're getting
11:19the debut album it's done right you've
11:22finish the album completely done yet yeah
11:23what is the it's good news we're up to
11:2740 what is the final song that you finish
11:31for the album it's actually the song um
11:34that closes uh the album um is that why
11:39it closes the album no no it's just it just
11:41felt like a really nice ending to the
11:43album i don't wanna i've already given a
11:45lot of me song titles away at least half the
11:48album so i'm gonna hold this one but it's a
11:50one it's a good one okay and it's actually
11:52the only song on the album um that i
11:54didn't write so it gives it gives a
11:57slightly different sound a slightly
11:58different dynamic to all and i think it
12:00kind of glues all the rest together it's
12:01a nice song so if it's the only song you
12:03didn't write what was so special about
12:06it that you included it on the album it
12:09was just on the first listen i mean you
12:10now every now and then more at the start
12:13at less now because i think they've learned
12:15from it but i often you know i'd often get
12:16t sent through um management or label
12:19different songs and normally i like to be in
12:22the room you know what i mean i'll
12:23obviously like to have me right honestly
12:26anymore laughing anymore laughing
12:28em anyway anyway it was more musically
12:35than anything this song really stood out
12:37to me and i thought it almost works as a
12:40nice little novelty i've written the rest
12:41and this one is you know kind of a
12:43slightly different style so right what do you
12:45look for in ending tracks on albums
12:47because they are you know it's a great
12:48opportunity you know it's a lasting memory
12:50from the album i wish i could give you a
12:53more interesting answer than this to be
12:55honest i only really knew once i heard it
12:57i didn't realize it because it's it's
12:58quite slow actually and i didn't
13:00necessary want to end the album on that
13:02note but it just feels like the right
13:04message the right lyrics so finality on
13:06yeah yeah you know you'll get kicked out
13:08if you carry on hey we have people behind
13:12us final warning
13:15can they see us who knows oh there's a
13:19guy over here oh all right we have a
13:22co-star um that was the final song you
13:26did what song and if you don't give away
13:28titles that's totally cool but what song
13:29took you the longest can you tell us about
13:30that song to just finish to write it's
13:32probably this song we made it really i
13:34wrote this song about two and a half years
13:35go maybe even longer now um have you not
13:39beenlisting 20 interviews today i've said
13:40this about 20 times already um yeah i wrote
13:44about two and a half years ago i did it
13:45with julian and john um who i'd done a
13:47lot of the one direction stuff with um and
13:49i think i just wanted to be further on in
13:51the writing process so i could go boom boom
13:53boom boom and just release music more
13:55frequently i knew that was a good song but i
13:57wanted to get further on the writing
13:59before i like got into this phase of of the
14:01album and uh excuse me if you've been
14:03and i've been asked this already today
14:04but uh probably the concept the concept
14:08behind the title walls if you could just
14:09share that yeah i have been asked this
14:11today and i've not had a good answer at
14:12all and you know what um i wish i had
14:15something more imaginative and some people
14:16probably bullshitting this situation but
14:18um i just thought it was thought provoking
14:21it's my favorite it's a song on the
14:23album there's a song called walls it's
14:24one of my favorite songs if not my
14:25favorite song on the album and i just
14:27thought it was a thought provoking
14:28interesting title really it's nothing too
14:30interesting all right exciting behind the
14:32reason just that's why are you uh you
14:34announced tour of course you guys are all
14:36going very excited about that well
14:38here 17 i believe here in new york city
14:40nex june uh it's funny you're by no
14:42means doing intimate venues but they are
14:44they're uh smaller venues than say the
14:46arenas you may have done as a carless
14:47group are you looking forward to you know
14:49a smaller experiences uh definitely
14:51intimate maybe definitely you know that
14:53every single tour we did with the band
14:55was incredible you know it goes without
14:56saying but being in small rooms you
14:59know when we were first in the band for
15:01the first uh six months
15:02we did this little uh like radio tour
15:05almost with uh across scotland and we
15:07played really tiny gigs the smallest
15:08gigs we ever played and we will all
15:10say there's some of our favorite shows
15:12there's something really special about
15:13playing small venues so yeah i'm really
15:15excited about that's awesome when you think
15:17back to those like you know stadium
15:19shows arena shows and you know i think
15:20the media always uses these terms like
15:22brothers or you know family when you're
15:25in a group that just has that much success
15:26and you go through such a unique
15:27experience how do you how would you
15:29relate it to you know the casual person
15:31is it is it like classmates is it like
15:33a fraternity like is it as strong as a
15:35brotherhood yeah i think i think i think
15:37brothers the best way really okay because
15:39you know we all the experience that we
15:42went through was you know unique and and
15:45the only people who can on your own
15:49the only people who can relate to that is
15:51you know each of us so i think we'll
15:53always have that love and respect for
15:55e each other and in the same way you
15:56know we used to wind each other up in the
15:59the band like like and and and used to
16:01get on each other's nerves if one of us
16:02was tired or whatever so i think
16:04definitely like brothers did you lead the
16:06charge in the winding me up obviously a
16:09little bit right yeah yeah yeah um i
16:12thought it was actually really cool uh
16:14and another thing i'm sure you've been
16:15asked about but i thought it was
16:16interesting when liam in a recent
16:17interview you know said he goes to you
16:19in times of crisis i thought it just
16:20bodies about not even just you guys as
16:22bandmates but you as a person you know
16:24and why do you think liam said that
16:25why do you think he does that um i
16:27i don't know i was you know i think
16:29going into the band um it feels slightly
16:32different now but going into the band i
16:34was the oldest and even if the boys
16:37thought it or not i always felt a
16:39little bit of responsibility you know i
16:41mean on that level um and and i think
16:44in those situations i've always been
16:45pretty approachable for for liam or any
16:47of the boys to be honest you know if
16:49they need to chat or whatever so i'm
16:51honored that you said that though it's
16:53papa nice of it pretty nice well and of
16:54course with respect liam i don't i'm not
16:56asking for any private information what
16:57does he typically go to you for advice
17:00on do you remember last time he called
17:00you like what does he want to talk like
17:01talk about i think normally we're just
17:04like um in the last couple of months
17:05we've like we won't speak to each other
17:07that often but you know i'll ring him
17:09and we'll speak on phone for like a
17:10good three hours and cover everything i
17:13me literally everything personal than
17:14business oh absolutely yeah but
17:17sometimes the two intertwine obviously
17:18and you know you're talking about some
17:20of the struggles you might be having
17:21in your work life and he'll say the
17:23same kind of thing and you know i think i
17:25i think it's important because at the
17:26end of the day it's a crazy job what we
17:28do you know i mean you need to be able
17:29to talk to someone about i think right
17:31um i want to ask you about another
17:32thing you said about another member
17:34recently and i'll give you an
17:35opportunity to give a different answer
17:36but you said that if you could be any
17:38celebrity you'd be nile because nothing
17:40because nothing bothers nile yeah he's
17:42comcoolcollected still is that still the
17:44celebrity you would be for one day
17:46definitely wow it's just like what it's
17:50just sounds so stress-free i once seen
17:52some fans talking online saying it's
17:56easy to be a nile fan innit and it is
17:58just no drama lovely lads you know what
18:01me never gets himself in trouble like
18:03yeah it's easy it's a good life
18:08but do you have any plans for halloween
18:10i'm not a man for dressing up to be
18:12honest i've done a little bit in past
18:14um i i think when is halloween what day
18:17thursday thursday i don't even know where i'm
18:20i'm going to be to be honest i've not
18:22really thought about it but i probably
18:23won't dress up unless i feel peer
18:25pressure really bad and then i'll make
18:27half an effort are you a favorite like
18:28are you a scary movie kind of guy or no
18:30you're just halloween's not your season
18:32i don't mind scary movies i don't mind
18:33scary movies really i don't mind scary
18:35movies really i don't mind scary movies
18:36yeah um yeah they're all right they're
18:38allright most of them have got a pretty
18:39rubbish storyline though aren't there
18:41there's not many good ones right yeah
18:42yeah give me a good one to watch i'm
18:44putting you on the spot anyone scary
18:46i like scream man scream i'm like scream you
18:49it chapter two stranger things stranger
18:53things that's scary um we're going to get
18:56to actually we have a just a ton of fan
18:58questions we're going to get to as many
19:00as we can uh the first of which though is
19:01we had a contest we had a giveaway and
19:03one of the prizes the third place prize
19:04was for anyone that couldn't be here
19:06today they could ask a question from
19:07home and i do want to shout her out she
19:09is ally vernig from california and she
19:11wants to know um when you come to when
19:13it comes to writing how do you combat
19:14riders block when you when you come into
19:16contact with riders block um
19:18i think it's always important
19:19creatively to you know not work too
19:21much because you know there's there's a
19:23limit to how much you can do definitely
19:27um i think just be confident in what
19:28you do i think i think sometimes like
19:30writers block it can you know if you
19:32have one day right and it's not very
19:34good and then you go in the next day
19:35and the next day is not very good it
19:36can kind of snowball a little bit so i
19:38think just staying confident and and
19:40just keep doing it really is it
19:42something you should take a step back
19:43from or is it something you personally
19:44work through i think it depends on the
19:46situation it depends how long you've
19:48been working right in i did have a
19:50moment on this record why i did need to
19:51take a break from writing because i
19:53felt like i was writing every single
19:54day and there was you know a new
19:56concept every day new lyrics every day
19:58there's a lot to think about and i thought
19:59the quality suffered a little bit so i
20:01think depending on the situation all
20:03right cool let's kick it to twitter
20:04right now we have a question from over
20:06there alessia oh michelle there we go
20:10allright michelle wants to know how
20:12excited are you to come to brazil we
20:13love you are proper excited brazil is
20:16amazing brazil is amazing and yeah
20:19yeah yeah that's one of the places that
20:20i made sure that we're going on the
20:22tour i've had amazing experiences there
20:23with the bands like it's mental there
20:25that's awesome all right there you go
20:27michelle and we have a ton of fans as
20:29you can probably see on your screen at
20:30home here in the studio in new york city
20:31we're gonna get to our first fan
20:32question it's going to be oh is it
20:34emma now this is really cool emma won a
20:36contest she was the grand prize winner
20:38she made a cool little video dancing to
20:40one of your songs singing one of your
20:41songs too and shows the moves
20:43yeah can we see some moves
20:45joking i joking i joking you don't
20:46op do you want to bust a move
20:472am dancing moves yeah okay um but no
20:51you know i'll let emma tell her story
20:53but you've had a really beautiful uh
20:54impact on emma's life and i'll just
20:56let her ask this question um it just
21:00totally escaped my brain uh your music
21:02has always made me feel seen loved in
21:05that the lyrics were made especially
21:07for me is there any like album or any
21:10artist that makes you feel like that
21:13um that were written just for me that
21:17was that what the i felt the lyrics are
21:18talking to me um of course there are
21:22um i'm trying to think of a specific
21:24song off the top of my head now um i
21:27can't think of anything specific um
21:31there's some lyrics in champagne supernova
21:35oh come on i'm allowed to say an oasis song
21:38uh that i think are really thought
21:39provoking and really interesting but in
21:41terms of like how they relate to me i'm
21:43not sure that was shit answer sorry love
21:46are we live by the way should i not be
21:48swearing are we live we're on the internet
21:49okay okay sorry everyone yeah it's friday
21:52exactly um well to that point do you find
21:55yourself more do you like you see
21:57yourself seen more in like literature or
21:59film than music like in terms of if you're
22:01yourself an art or feel like something
22:03speaking to you um i don't know it's a bit
22:07deep for me that i just get on with it yeah
22:09i don't know i don't know all right
22:11cool um let's get to the next fan question
22:13it'll come from over here hi my name is
22:15Ariana it's nice to meet you louis nice to
22:16meet you too love um i was wondering what
22:20song most recently inspired you or made
22:22you feel like you could achieve anything
22:26um there's a few um but in general it was
22:29a sound thing than a lyric thing um and i
22:32kind of i've spoke before kind of there
22:34was a second where i kind of fell out of
22:36love with music a little bit i wasn't
22:37hearing a lot of stuff that i really
22:38loved um and then i found a really
22:43amazing playlist and started playing
22:44some of the oldest stuff that i used to
22:46like listening to um and sam fender is an
22:50artist and the way he sounds musically
22:53you like sammy loves shit yeah um it made
22:57like it was like really impressive really
22:59i'm like this is how it's meant to be so
23:01uh yeah that probably inspired me it's
23:04awesome huge uh sam fan uh let's get up
23:07front right here what's your name oh
23:08look at you come on down i'm faith nice
23:11to meet you nice to meet you um are there
23:13any songs on the next album that
23:15challenge you musically or took you
23:16outside of your comfort zone um i'd say
23:19uh to a certain degree for like different
23:22reasons kill my mind was that song
23:24i had to be brave and like be like this
23:26is who i want to be um but to a certain
23:29degree you know from right in especially
23:31the kind of stuff that you know we
23:32wrote in the band that was kind of a bold
23:34step for me to say this is who i want to
23:36be really so i'd say it was that song
23:38thankyou um and then we have time for is
23:42it one more what time for one more
23:44question come right up here with make it a
23:45goodin hi no pressure okay hi i'm alissa
23:49and my question was are there any lyrics on
23:52your new album that hold any like great
23:54significance to you um i mentioned it
23:59today and i like about we made it i like
24:02that lyric that says i don't know why
24:04they put all of this on us when we're so
24:05young we've done a pretty good job i think
