00:00:00The End
00:00:38THE END
00:01:00I got a story to tell, a yarn about cow country and cow punchers, cattle and men.
00:01:06I was working for the Strobe Ranch, learning my trade.
00:01:09A trade of worn leather saddle blisters and brandon eyes.
00:01:13A trade with some song, some fun, some blood.
00:01:17It was as good a job as a man could ask for.
00:01:20Lonely sometimes, cold, so much distance you thought you'd never get back.
00:01:26But for me, a young kid, it was a fine time.
00:01:28The memories are mostly good.
00:01:31You're up there on top of the world where the air was clear and thin.
00:01:35The only sound was the wind in the pines.
00:01:39We were in the business of growing beef.
00:01:41Always moving the cattle, looking for new feed.
00:01:45They were those new, bald-faced herefords, not like the longhorns, wild and spooky, but friendly critters, gentle as a
00:01:54dog.
00:01:55Seasons melted away, peaceful, from spring to summer, fall, then winter.
00:02:02Cows had to look out for themselves in the snow, the winter drift.
00:02:07As soon as a man on horseback could get around, they'd go out and locate the cattle, spot them for
00:02:13the spring roundup.
00:02:15They'd come back from the winter drift, cold and worn out.
00:02:18They'd come back to the ranch.
00:02:20Our foreman was Owen Daybright.
00:02:22He knew what he was doing.
00:02:24We all like him.
00:02:27And there was his foster brother, Lee Strobey.
00:02:30Their father owned the ranch.
00:02:33The night they got back, the trouble began.
00:02:39Well, look what's turned out.
00:02:41Hiya, Cal.
00:02:42People still drink whiskey.
00:02:43Hiya, Lee.
00:02:44Meet down to my shoes.
00:02:46That's what comes from working for someone you've known too long, Lee.
00:02:54See my wife this winter?
00:02:55Jen come in town a couple of times with your old man.
00:02:59How'd Arch look?
00:03:00Oh, just fair, I'd say.
00:03:01Cold weather always seems to bother him.
00:03:03How'd Jen look?
00:03:05Way to find that out is go home and see for yourself.
00:03:09Can I buy your razor, Cal?
00:03:10I don't want to scare her.
00:03:11In the back.
00:03:12Keeping you busy, Doc?
00:03:14The night doesn't blue fire.
00:03:15I don't want to get him all day for that girl that used to work at the Eaton house.
00:03:19Lily?
00:03:21I wouldn't know her name.
00:03:26What's her trouble, Doc?
00:03:28Oh, small variety.
00:03:30About that big.
00:03:32Arrived a couple hours ago, they'd tell me.
00:03:36You wouldn't go?
00:03:38That's right.
00:03:39I don't take calls like this until I hear from the father.
00:03:43And that isn't likely.
00:03:56There's a rifle on you, cowboy.
00:04:01Get down and walk over here so I can see who you are.
00:04:05I can see who you are.
00:04:05Get down now.
00:04:13Get down now.
00:04:14Is that you?
00:04:16Yeah.
00:04:17Put that gun down.
00:04:19It's a fan.
00:04:19It's a fan.
00:04:34Get down now.
00:04:34What are you doing here?
00:04:36Helping.
00:04:37Nobody else would come.
00:04:39So I heard.
00:04:41How's Lee?
00:04:43Want to see you.
00:04:45I'll be home as soon as she's asleep.
00:04:51Who's he?
00:04:53Her brother Dick Faskin from out of town.
00:04:56He spent the day looking for the man.
00:05:00Lily, all right?
00:05:07You've got company, Lily.
00:05:16Hello, Owen.
00:05:17Lily.
00:05:24Pan size.
00:05:26And beautiful.
00:05:29Good color, too.
00:05:31Yes.
00:05:36The doctor wouldn't come.
00:05:39Jen came instead.
00:05:41Don't you even think about it, Lily. Not now.
00:05:45I'm really pretty lucky, Owen.
00:05:48I couldn't face up going back to the restaurant to work.
00:05:53Mrs. Birkoff for this work out at her place when I'm ready for it.
00:05:59We're grateful, too.
00:06:01It sounds queer to say it here and now, but...
00:06:05You'll have a good life, Owen.
00:06:09I'm sure he will, Lily.
00:06:13I'm sure he will.
00:06:16I'll open this up.
00:06:18To the table, you'll check her out.
00:06:20To the table, you'll see you at the table, you'll be fine.
00:06:28I'm sure it's fine.
00:06:30I'm sure she's left in a room...
00:06:32I'm sorry.
00:06:37Wait a minute!
00:06:44You're right here.
00:06:51You've seen me before, Owen.
00:06:53There's been a change.
00:06:54Somebody washed your face and got you a new dress.
00:06:57Arch.
00:06:57And a tub in my own room.
00:07:00I bathe every day now.
00:07:02It's an improvement.
00:07:05How was the winter?
00:07:08Well, we stayed alive, and we kept the cattle alive.
00:07:11There was no inn at the ranch.
00:07:13Didn't see our nearest neighbor in nearly eight years ago.
00:07:14Only five weeks.
00:07:17We missed you, Owen.
00:07:25I brought Lily some grub.
00:07:28Owen.
00:07:31Who was it?
00:07:35Good night, Jane.
00:07:41Hold on the nut.
00:07:49You live in these parts?
00:07:50Around here.
00:07:52Who's the father?
00:07:55That'll be Lily's business, wouldn't it?
00:07:57I'll find out.
00:07:58Sure.
00:07:59I'll find out if it takes me a lifetime.
00:08:01Fine.
00:08:02It's a nice country to live in.
00:08:14I'll find out.
00:08:29Who was that?
00:08:32Owen Daybright.
00:08:35Your husband's foster brother, ain't he?
00:08:37That's right.
00:08:40How much?
00:08:43$500.
00:08:44He brought this food, too.
00:08:46Wine.
00:08:49You're wrong.
00:08:50He's good.
00:08:52And there's no one else around here like him.
00:08:58And again.
00:09:04He keeps his aces as a kicker, and he draws to it every time.
00:09:08Three times.
00:09:09Mr. Kicker.
00:09:10It's a game of chance, boys.
00:09:17We'll play again sometime.
00:09:27I ran your errand.
00:09:29Thanks, Owen.
00:09:30It's paid for.
00:09:32You pay for a coat.
00:09:33I appreciate it.
00:09:35It isn't the first time you saved my hide.
00:09:38Why don't you grow up, boy?
00:09:41Look, it happens.
00:09:43I sleep good.
00:09:47Your wife was there.
00:09:48Does she have any idea?
00:09:54Happened before I met Jen.
00:09:57Even so, she wouldn't understand it.
00:09:58You know what she's like.
00:10:00Why should I know what she's like?
00:10:02Well, that's right.
00:10:03You don't.
00:10:05She's what all the others weren't.
00:10:08She's everything I ever wanted for myself.
00:10:12It's been a long time.
00:10:13Let's get back to the ranch.
00:10:15Stand where you're at, Daybright.
00:10:18You.
00:10:18Move away.
00:10:26You brought Lily $500.
00:10:32That's right.
00:10:34Don't you need it?
00:10:35Not that kind.
00:10:37That wasn't grub money.
00:10:38It was get out of town money.
00:10:41I'll ask you one time.
00:10:43Was it yours?
00:10:45Point that gun to the floor, son, and turn around.
00:10:57There'll be other times.
00:10:58You're a conclusion jumper, my friend.
00:11:00I don't like them.
00:11:01Quit it, Owen.
00:11:01I'll handle this myself, Count.
00:11:03Not as long as I'm sheriff.
00:11:06All right, Count.
00:11:11You scared me twice tonight.
00:11:13Next time you point a gun at me, shoot it.
00:11:36You scared me twice tonight.
00:12:02Let's go.
00:12:02Well, welcome home, boy.
00:12:04How are you?
00:12:04You look fit, son. How are you, Owen?
00:12:07Good.
00:12:07How's the leg?
00:12:08Got the misery, same as every wonder for 20 years.
00:12:11Evening, boys.
00:12:11Hello, Mr. Willoughby.
00:12:13Thought you might want some hot coffee, Arch.
00:12:15Well, thank you, Mr. Willoughby.
00:12:17Same old dishwater?
00:12:20You don't want any, huh?
00:12:21Oh, no, I'm just kidding.
00:12:24Well, watch your language.
00:12:26How's the bad stomach?
00:12:28Owen, some days I doubt if I'll make it till sundown.
00:12:32Why don't you stop eating your own cooking?
00:12:34Boy, I'm stuck here. Can't help it.
00:12:43Arch, these cigars ain't from Pittsburgh.
00:12:46Kansas City.
00:12:49Place sure isn't going downhill fast.
00:12:55How'd it go?
00:12:57Ask the foreman.
00:12:58I just took orders.
00:13:02You got a wife waiting for you.
00:13:04I hadn't forgotten.
00:13:07I'll look in on him.
00:13:10Good night.
00:13:11Good night, son.
00:13:12Good night, Lee.
00:13:14Boy looks trim.
00:13:17Nobody could have worked hard this winter.
00:13:20He's got a lot to make up for.
00:13:23He'll come around.
00:13:24Maybe Jen has something to do with it.
00:13:28Anyway, you can handle it alone now.
00:13:29Well, it sounds like you're giving no to someone.
00:13:35Well, Lee's married now.
00:13:37Jen's a fine daughter for you.
00:13:39I'm just crowding the place.
00:13:40Oh, if you're not comfortable here, we...
00:13:42I'm not forgetting, Arch.
00:13:44You've done everything you could to make me belong.
00:13:46When you picked me up, I was just a stray orphan.
00:13:49Fowl-melt and flea-bitten 15 years ago.
00:13:52It's been a long time.
00:13:53A good time.
00:13:55Now it's time for me to go.
00:13:58You really mean it.
00:14:00Well, I want to push on.
00:14:01Try my own wings.
00:14:03Owen.
00:14:07How do I say this?
00:14:10When I took you, it was for Lee.
00:14:13I couldn't get around outside and raise my own boy,
00:14:16so I picked you to do it for me.
00:14:17What I didn't know then was...
00:14:20that I needed you too.
00:14:23Need you now.
00:14:31All right, Arch.
00:14:36I was just hitting you for a raise, anyhow.
00:14:41Night.
00:14:42Night.
00:14:42All right.
00:14:45Jen, will you hurry up and come on out?
00:14:50I don't know why all of a sudden you can't get dressed in front of me.
00:14:53I'll be two more minutes, Lee.
00:14:56On top of all winter, that's a long time.
00:14:58I know that.
00:15:00Better than you.
00:15:03You mean you've missed me?
00:15:06Of course.
00:15:20You're beautiful.
00:15:22Do you think so, Lee?
00:15:24Do you really mean it?
00:15:26The first time I saw you, you were wearing a pair of split breeches.
00:15:31And you helped me come out of the back country.
00:15:34You and Arch.
00:15:37This is the second Sunday dress I ever owned, Lee.
00:15:41The first one I wore to my mother's funeral,
00:15:43and then I used it to bury my father,
00:15:45and then I burned it.
00:15:49And now you're a lady of fashion, huh?
00:15:53Well, that's what it says in Goldie's lady's book.
00:16:02I haven't done many smart things in my life.
00:16:04But marrying you is one of them.
00:16:07We'll be happy, Lee.
00:16:10Nothing can stop us, honey.
00:16:24I'll be happy, Lee.
00:16:25Check in at last call.
00:16:38Morning, Mr. Willoughby.
00:16:42Morning, Owen.
00:16:43Nice to see a real man back again.
00:16:46Well, thanks, Mr. Willoughby.
00:16:47Morning, real man.
00:16:49Did that nasty old noise wake you up,
00:16:51or were you waiting for the sun to hit your dimple cheeks?
00:16:55You Sunday men haven't lost any sleep in so long,
00:16:57you've forgotten what you go to bed for.
00:16:59Mr. Willoughby's buttering the formula.
00:17:03All right, all right.
00:17:05I slept late.
00:17:06Why is it, though, when a man's out on the range all by himself,
00:17:08and eating his own cooking,
00:17:09he looks forward to getting up for breakfast?
00:17:10Well, because when he's home,
00:17:12he lies there and has to figure out
00:17:13if it's worth the bill he ain't getting up for.
00:17:15You, uh,
00:17:16I ain't done a contract with the South Pedestrially.
00:17:18Any time my cooking gets so bad that you've got to go hungry,
00:17:22I shall give you your time before you know what gave you the miseries.
00:17:25That's telling them, Mr. Willoughby.
00:17:26No offense, sir.
00:17:27Mr. Willoughby accepts your apology.
00:17:29I do.
00:17:30I'm sure there's no hard feelings.
00:17:32How about, uh, another cup of coffee?
00:17:33Sure.
00:17:36I have to move you, Sheriff.
00:17:38Taking the census again?
00:17:40Yeah.
00:17:41I like to see who comes and who goes.
00:18:05Hello, hub.
00:18:07I got you a letter a week ago.
00:18:09You're a man, Uncle.
00:18:12How's Lily?
00:18:13She's doing all right.
00:18:17Who's that?
00:18:19The law.
00:18:28Brothers, ain't you?
00:18:30I'm going to kill a man before I leave here.
00:18:32Anybody special?
00:18:33Or what I do?
00:18:35I don't know the man yet, but I will.
00:18:36Keep an eye on me.
00:18:37The name's Faskin.
00:18:40Where are the horses?
00:18:41Behind the depot.
00:19:01Faskin boys were looking for Lily.
00:19:04They heard she'd been taken in and given a home by a widow woman named a Mrs. Burke.
00:19:08Who owned a ranch nearby.
00:19:23We're looking for Lily.
00:19:24We're her brothers.
00:19:25I didn't know Lily had this much family.
00:19:27Never said a word.
00:19:29Maybe she's ashamed of us.
00:19:30Not Lily.
00:19:31She's not that kind.
00:19:32She's in her room.
00:19:38I'll call her.
00:19:39Never mind, Mr. Rohn.
00:19:49So you sent for him?
00:19:51The reason's over there.
00:19:59I didn't ask for you to come.
00:20:02I didn't ask for you to come.
00:20:04Do you hear?
00:20:04We're this kind of family.
00:20:06We don't waste any love on each other.
00:20:09We fought amongst ourselves.
00:20:10We've even shattered each other.
00:20:12We've got one tie.
00:20:13We have blood relations.
00:20:15Go away, hug.
00:20:18Go away.
00:20:20You want to marry Owen Daybright, Lily?
00:20:24I want him, and I don't want you.
00:20:26I'll manage myself without any help.
00:20:28I want him.
00:20:46Daybright knows something.
00:20:47If he can't talk when I get through with him,
00:20:49he'll write the name with his feet.
00:21:21Let's go.
00:21:24Ride him!
00:21:27Ah, scratch him, boy.
00:21:33Hey, Mr. Kicker, you dropped something.
00:21:42What he needs now is that poor face.
00:22:00You know there's no way to break a horse, now get on him and ride, I'll make you a toy.
00:22:43Did you have to use that whip?
00:22:45Oh, it's touchy.
00:22:49Stop being such a farmer.
00:22:51A good whipping never hurt any filly.
00:22:53Come on.
00:23:06All those authorizations come in?
00:23:08All but Mrs. Berks.
00:23:09I'll ride over.
00:23:13Cut me a horse here, you want it for yourself.
00:23:36Come on, let's go.
00:23:37Hi, Lily.
00:23:38Hello, Owen.
00:23:40Hello, Huey.
00:23:42Good day, ma'am.
00:23:46How do you feel?
00:23:49I feel good.
00:23:50Why?
00:23:52I just wondered.
00:23:57That's mighty good to hear.
00:24:00Why, thank you.
00:24:04Well, I just asked because...
00:24:06because you look real fine, Lily.
00:24:15Just fine.
00:24:27All right.
00:24:29Had your breakfast?
00:24:30Mr. Willoughby's best.
00:24:32I can outcook him with my two arms broken.
00:24:35Business first, then we'll trade recipes.
00:24:37Write me a note authorizing us to cut out your cattle at Roundup and bring them home.
00:24:41Been wondering if I was being snubbed.
00:24:43The only thing that could snub you is a mountain.
00:24:45I'll get paper and pen.
00:24:51Thanks, Owen.
00:24:52But I'm all right again.
00:24:53You look fine, Lily.
00:24:55Yeah, that's what Huey said.
00:24:59I wish I could find the words to thank you for bringing me the money.
00:25:02But I can't.
00:25:03Well, don't try.
00:25:06I hate to see you fronting for Lee.
00:25:10Well, I'm...
00:25:12I'm thinking of Arch.
00:25:13I know.
00:25:14You go.
00:25:14You go on standing in front of Lee, protecting him, letting his dirt rub off on you.
00:25:20Maybe.
00:25:21I'm thinking of Jen.
00:25:23And all she's done for me.
00:25:25And that's why I can't tell.
00:25:28So we'll both keep it a secret.
00:25:31Lily, it ain't right that you should...
00:25:33Oh, and I've been afraid of a lot of things this past winter.
00:25:36What people would say about me.
00:25:38How I'd raise a baby.
00:25:42How I'd keep us both alive.
00:25:45Well, now it's happened.
00:25:46And I'm not afraid anymore.
00:25:50I'm not glad it happened.
00:25:51I was wrong.
00:25:52I know that.
00:25:56I'm just not afraid of living anymore.
00:26:03Dave right here.
00:26:05In the house.
00:26:12Start walking to that shed over there.
00:26:15Why?
00:26:16You won't get hurt if you don't break for the house.
00:26:18Go on.
00:26:35What is this?
00:26:37You bought your ticket, you'll see.
00:26:38Sit down.
00:26:44Goodbye, ladies.
00:26:45See you after roundup.
00:26:58Dave right.
00:27:01So you're sent for big brother.
00:27:06Why don't I remind myself to pack a gun when I visit my neighbors.
00:27:10That money was yours, Dave right?
00:27:12Oh, it was, huh?
00:27:13That baby's gonna need a name.
00:27:15Yours.
00:27:21You want another helping?
00:27:28Well, come on.
00:27:29Pull the trigger.
00:27:31First you shoot me, and then you gotta shoot Huey because he saw you.
00:27:35Then you'll have to shoot Mrs. Burke and your own sister because they'll see you.
00:27:39Well, come on.
00:27:40Pull the trigger.
00:27:41Quit it all and he'll do it.
00:27:42I don't think he's got the guts.
00:27:48Put that down.
00:27:49That gun down, big brother.
00:27:50You won't use it.
00:27:52And I'll break your arm if you keep it.
00:27:59I won't.
00:28:00No, no, no, no.
00:28:25Get him up.
00:28:27Nick, put that gun down, please.
00:28:30Go ahead.
00:28:31Hey, cut down on her, she's only your sister.
00:28:33You gotta kill somebody.
00:28:36Be careful who you poke in the belly.
00:28:38Huey, that's enough.
00:28:40Whatever you say, Lily.
00:28:42All right, Hub, this is still our dance.
00:28:44No, Owen!
00:28:46Haven't I made enough trouble for myself?
00:28:48For my baby?
00:28:49You wanna add murder, too?
00:28:52No one take them to the sheriff.
00:28:53If you need someone to sign the complaint, I'll do it.
00:28:58All right, Lily, you got the right.
00:29:01Come on.
00:29:06Go on.
00:29:12Here are the lazy W's for sale.
00:29:15How much?
00:29:16Oh, they're asking $35,000 cash for it.
00:29:19That reminds me, you owe me some money.
00:29:22I generally do, aren't you?
00:29:23Joe Benson told me yesterday at the bank that you were overdrawn.
00:29:27Don't worry, the old man covered it for you.
00:29:29Thanks.
00:29:30Still trying to fill those inside straights, huh?
00:29:32I always forget what you told me.
00:29:34Hey, have you been spending our money?
00:29:37You know, that's a joint account.
00:29:39How much did he draw?
00:29:41$500.
00:29:42Said you drew it in gold.
00:29:44Makes a nice clink in the pocket of that.
00:29:48I'll see you later.
00:29:49I've got to get ready for work.
00:29:50Yeah.
00:29:52Is there some cream there, Jim?
00:29:56Excuse me.
00:30:09You don't believe that story about the $500, do you?
00:30:12No, I don't.
00:30:15Well, look, honey, there's certain things that you've got to understand.
00:30:19I don't like Arch knowing everything that's going on.
00:30:22Yes.
00:30:24And I can understand you're not wanting him to know.
00:30:27That $500 is a lot of money.
00:30:29I didn't like taking it out of the account either, but...
00:30:33Well, it was for a lady's honor.
00:30:36Stop it, Lee. Stop it.
00:30:37I know all about you and Lily.
00:30:43Oh, I know what you're thinking.
00:30:46Oh, honey, that $500 was to help Owen out.
00:30:51I don't want Arch or anybody else to know about it.
00:30:55But now that the fat's in the fire, I guess I'll have to tell you the truth.
00:30:59You see, Owen got him in trouble with Lily.
00:31:03And the least I could do to help him was...
00:31:06Well, you know how much I think of Owen.
00:31:08The least I could do to help him was to give him the money.
00:31:10Oh, you're a liar.
00:31:13You're a mean, contemptible liar.
00:31:31Hey!
00:31:34You're all alike.
00:31:36You and Arch and Lee.
00:31:37You could be a little clearer.
00:31:38You're all a pack of liars.
00:31:39Well, I'm through.
00:31:40I'm leaving.
00:31:42Slow down to a walk.
00:31:43That $500 you gave Lily, I know where it came from.
00:31:46Now, wait a minute, Jen.
00:31:47Protecting him again.
00:31:48Fighting with Lily's brothers.
00:31:50You've known all about her and Lee from the start.
00:31:52It's just a lot of talk.
00:31:53I'd pay it no mind.
00:31:55Owen, why can't you be your own man?
00:31:57ihnen.
00:32:01these misunderstandings happen.
00:32:03All married people have a quarrel once in a while, I guess.
00:32:06I hate him.
00:32:09jen.
00:32:15You and I are kind of in the same fix.
00:32:18Arch is all the family we got.
00:32:20With him, we belong to something.
00:32:23Shouldn't we give him back a little bit in return?
00:32:32Oh, and what can I do?
00:32:34What can I do?
00:32:36Stay around.
00:32:38For Arch.
00:32:43All right.
00:32:46But all I'll do is stay.
00:32:59Morning, Mr. Kicker.
00:33:06Hey, hey, Owen.
00:33:09What fell on you?
00:33:11A couple of hard cases.
00:33:12Brothers.
00:33:13Name of Faskin.
00:33:14Faskin?
00:33:17Two of them?
00:33:19Lily's clan is gathering.
00:33:27Do they know?
00:33:29You're still alive.
00:33:30Do you think they'll find out?
00:33:32Well, not for a while.
00:33:34The sheriff's got them locked up.
00:33:37How long?
00:33:39Week.
00:33:43They'll try again.
00:33:45Well, tell them.
00:33:47Well, Lily might.
00:33:48She doesn't want to, but they're kind of hard to handle.
00:33:52Well, what do I do?
00:33:54You wouldn't do it.
00:33:56Let's see.
00:33:58There's only one way.
00:34:00Take Jen and get out.
00:34:01Stay away from here.
00:34:02Begin all over again.
00:34:03Because you've won this place out and all your friends with it.
00:34:07Sure.
00:34:08It's either that or get shot.
00:34:11With me gone, the ranch is yours.
00:34:18Nobody can stop your thinking.
00:34:20But don't say it to me.
00:34:23All right.
00:34:27Richard?
00:34:30Well, one day you'll help me once too often.
00:34:35Now, you boys are going out on a big roundup.
00:34:37If you ride with a short or underfed string, you might as well be afoot.
00:34:41Now, here's a horse you can have cheap.
00:34:43A real Saturday afternoon bargain.
00:34:46Sound of limb and body.
00:34:48Roon, he's been burned so often he looks like a brand book.
00:34:51Just give me an offer.
00:34:53I may got about 12 brands.
00:34:54What do you say, Lee?
00:34:55Oh, I'd say a good round dozen.
00:34:56That means 12 of unhappy customers.
00:34:58Now, Roon, I pass.
00:35:00All right.
00:35:01Anybody else?
00:35:02Take him away.
00:35:03Put him out the grass.
00:35:04Let's see the next.
00:35:05All right, all right.
00:35:06I got the best cow horses this side of KC.
00:35:09I got a pedigree comes with this one.
00:35:12Name your price.
00:35:13Well, let's look more like it.
00:35:15Yeah, let me take it.
00:35:16Open the gate, boys.
00:35:26Hunt.
00:35:29Ah!
00:35:30Ah!
00:35:34Ah!
00:35:43Ah!
00:35:44Ah!
00:35:47Ah!
00:35:54Good horse, Rune.
00:35:56Only trouble is he's a whistler.
00:35:57He leaks air.
00:35:59Call that a leak?
00:36:03Owen, you know better than to ride a horse that way through town on Saturday.
00:36:06That team of Wilfots took after you and almost ran away.
00:36:10Well, don't blame me. Blame the horse.
00:36:11He whistles and everything follows.
00:36:14Hey, hold on. I ain't through yet.
00:36:16You sure are.
00:36:18Can't you hold your breath a minute?
00:36:20Put him away.
00:36:28I wonder if the Faskin boys are comfortable.
00:36:30Who cares?
00:36:32Let's go look in on them.
00:36:35Pick me up later at the saloon.
00:36:42Oh, Owen.
00:36:45How are things?
00:36:47Quiet, con.
00:36:48Getting ready for a roundup.
00:36:49Tough job.
00:36:50How'd you like to sign on?
00:36:5230 a month in meals.
00:36:53Oh, not me.
00:36:54I sleep in a soft bed every night.
00:36:57Help you?
00:36:59I'm bringing the Faskin some cookies.
00:37:01Better push them into their cage with a stick.
00:37:04They're a troublesome pair.
00:37:12One inside?
00:37:14Might be catching.
00:37:21I understand the judge gave you boys a week.
00:37:23Judge, the stinking justice of the piece.
00:37:26Well, maybe next time we can arrange a real judge.
00:37:29Claw, hammer, coat, and all.
00:37:30Next time we'll be different.
00:37:37Look.
00:37:40Lily's doing all right without you boys.
00:37:43Why don't you leave her alone?
00:37:45I don't see no missus in front of her name.
00:37:47Well, that happens.
00:37:48Not to a sister of ours.
00:37:51All right, act like jackasses and you'll be treated like them.
00:37:54When you get out, the sheriff will put you on the train.
00:37:56Himself.
00:37:57Show your faces after that and you'll be back.
00:37:59Right here.
00:38:00For six months.
00:38:02You're scared.
00:38:07Just say the word and I'll order some critics of this place.
00:38:17By the way, I've decided to go on round up with you.
00:38:19Not so easily.
00:38:21There are some things and some people you can't run away from.
00:38:23Well, I'll think about that when I get back.
00:38:25You ought to think about it now.
00:38:26Hold it.
00:38:27There's a Cheyenne in that tree.
00:38:31Got him.
00:38:33Hey, that thing jumped into your hand.
00:38:35How did you get it so fast?
00:38:36Practice, son.
00:38:37You ought to try it.
00:38:38Haven't got the time.
00:38:39Lee.
00:38:41The old Cheyenne cap.
00:38:43Yeah.
00:38:44Remember the night we rolled the rocks down on them?
00:38:46I remember when Arch caught us and the licking we got.
00:38:49I'd sooner have been scouted by the Cheyennes.
00:38:50A couple of fool kids playing with Indians.
00:38:53We had our times, didn't we?
00:38:57The Lentine car.
00:39:35Good morning, Arch.
00:39:36Good morning, Lee.
00:39:37Morning.
00:39:39Phew, I'm getting too fat.
00:39:42Did you buy any horses yesterday?
00:39:44Well, Obi-Wruin tried to push a windbroke gelding off on us, but Owen caught him up.
00:39:49Obi never quits trying.
00:39:51Arch, you know, I got to thinking last night.
00:39:53Come on, man.
00:39:54Tell me why they were walking.
00:39:56Come on, walk with me.
00:39:57Walk with me.
00:40:06What started me thinking was that I saw a horse in Runes that I'd like to own.
00:40:10I began talking about price before I remembered that I'm strapped.
00:40:13Buy him.
00:40:14We always got money for a good horse.
00:40:15Oh, I don't care about the horse.
00:40:17I probably own too many.
00:40:18Hey, no, Arch, the point is that a man my age, with a wife, with a father who owns half
00:40:24the county, has to hold off buying a horse because his wages won't let him afford it.
00:40:28Oh, listen, Lee.
00:40:30You haven't been able to trust me.
00:40:32Now, that's in the past, Arch.
00:40:33You were right, but it's done.
00:40:37I've been a good ham this winter, haven't I?
00:40:38Yes, you have.
00:40:40You think I know the cattle business?
00:40:41Maybe not as well as you were on, but well enough to make money at it, huh?
00:40:45Of course.
00:40:46If you need more money, you'll get it.
00:40:47Let me tell you.
00:40:49When you came home with Jen last fall, I thought it was another piece of foolishness like all
00:40:52the others.
00:40:53It wasn't.
00:40:54Jen was something else.
00:40:56Something right.
00:40:57That's why I put you on a top hand's wages.
00:40:59I'll raise them.
00:41:00Oh, no, Arch.
00:41:02That's too easy.
00:41:04Either I'm your son, entitled to your trust with the ranch or anything else, or I'm not.
00:41:09It's one or the other.
00:41:11What do you want?
00:41:13I want to be part owner of the ranch, Arch.
00:41:16I want to share in it.
00:41:17I'm married and settled down now.
00:41:20Why, here's where I'll live and raise my kids and die.
00:41:23Here's where I'll help take over from you when you've had enough of the business.
00:41:29I'm not just camping here for wages.
00:41:32I'm here to stay, Arch.
00:41:34I'm your son.
00:41:37I've been thinking about it, too.
00:41:38More than you.
00:41:39A lot more than you.
00:41:41You're my own blood.
00:41:42A man has a debt to that.
00:41:44Oh, you've got no debt to me, Arch.
00:41:46Yeah.
00:41:47It's an old one.
00:41:50Began the day your mother died.
00:41:51You got it coming to you, Lee, for doing without her.
00:41:54Well, we've managed, old-timer.
00:41:57Beginner to feel like one.
00:41:59I'll go in town tomorrow and draw out the papers.
00:42:02From now on, half the ranch is yours.
00:42:06My half will go to Owen when I die.
00:42:10Hamilton.
00:42:11Flying H.
00:42:13Neely.
00:42:13Dog Iron.
00:42:15Sam.
00:42:16Lazy S, double O.
00:42:19Frank, Peter.
00:42:20Box, pitchfork.
00:42:22Frank, Martin.
00:42:24Let's see, Box F.
00:42:25Double F.
00:42:26That's right, double F.
00:42:28What do you carry them in your head for?
00:42:29We've got 40 different brands.
00:42:31The biggest shuffle you ever saw.
00:42:32We'll have to move fast.
00:42:33Talk to you a minute, Owen.
00:42:34Sure, go ahead, Huey.
00:42:36I was back up in the mountains yesterday, looking for the last of the horses.
00:42:39Oh, we finished the tally this morning.
00:42:41They're all in.
00:42:41There's a small jag of our cattle up there.
00:42:44Brands are still haired over, but I could tell there was ours.
00:42:47Couldn't stop because I was trying to turn the horses, and by the time we got them headed downhill, I
00:42:51was miles away.
00:42:52Do you want to pick them up today?
00:42:53Well, I aimed to this morning.
00:42:55They're gone.
00:42:56Well, they've probably been rounded up by the other crew already.
00:42:59Nope, they was drove the other way.
00:43:01Did you travel them?
00:43:02As far as I could.
00:43:04Let's go try again, Huey.
00:43:06I'll come with you.
00:43:07Stop stopping to get my gun, Huey.
00:43:08Better get Owen's, too.
00:43:20Take a look at this shoe.
00:43:22You see the two cocks on the inside and how it's built up?
00:43:28This rider signed his name for us.
00:43:39Two horses and four steers.
00:43:42These tracks go straight for a while.
00:43:58It got dark on me here, and I turned back.
00:44:02Good place to cross.
00:44:04If they want to cross, you'd think like a cattle rustler.
00:44:07Let's look on the other side.
00:44:21Only one horse came out of the water here.
00:44:29I was right.
00:44:30This horse is a decode.
00:44:32It's either one up or downstream.
00:44:33Huey, you look below.
00:44:35Yeah.
00:44:55There ain't even been a horse down this way.
00:44:58There has been here, and they've been driving some steers ahead of them.
00:45:19Here's where they come out.
00:45:25Let's hear back its place.
00:45:26Yeah.
00:45:27Let's go over and have a look.
00:45:54Let's go over and have a look.
00:45:58Let's go over and have a look.
00:45:59You looking for something?
00:46:01Four steers.
00:46:03Well, there ain't that water in Trump.
00:46:06There is that stick up.
00:46:08Come here, Herb.
00:46:12Notice that cork.
00:46:14The built up inside of that shoe.
00:46:17Who owns the horse that wears it?
00:46:18I've never seen it before.
00:46:38Here's another one. It's fresh.
00:46:46What about it, Herb?
00:46:48What about what?
00:46:51Whoever rode that horse drove four of our steers in here.
00:46:54Look, if you see your steers here, you can talk.
00:46:57If not, I ain't accountable.
00:46:58Get on your horse and get out of here.
00:47:00Herb, I figure you butcher that beef and bury the hides,
00:47:03but I can't prove it.
00:47:04So I'm gonna do the next best thing.
00:47:06I'm gonna show you what you buy into every time I track our cattle here.
00:47:31I always heard you were a pretty good saloon fighter, Herb.
00:47:34How are you without a bottle or a knife?
00:47:54I'm gonna die.
00:47:56I'm gonna die.
00:47:56Let's go, Herb.
00:47:57I'm gonna die.
00:48:01I'm gonna die.
00:48:12Now we're going to take four of your steers.
00:48:14You licked him.
00:48:16Why go to jail for stealing his cattle?
00:48:18You talking as the new half-owner?
00:48:20You've got a roundup to go to, so have I.
00:48:22How are we going to make it if we're in jail?
00:48:26You coming, Huey?
00:48:28You're still foreman.
00:48:56You're going to keep me from going to the sheriff?
00:49:00Think back a ways, Herb.
00:49:01Did I put a gun on you?
00:49:03Did I shoot the knife out of your hand?
00:49:06Am I driving off your steers?
00:49:09I got no part in this.
00:49:14He's your foreman.
00:49:16Sad but true.
00:49:19Put a good price on your beef, Herb.
00:49:21You can't buy me off. Don't try.
00:49:25It wasn't a $250 beating, was it?
00:49:29All right.
00:49:31It's a deal.
00:49:32But I ain't done with him yet.
00:49:34Long as I can look down a gun barrel, I ain't done with him.
00:49:41Come on in to town with me.
00:49:43I'll get you the money.
00:49:44I can't sit a horse till I get this hand fixed and get a drink.
00:49:59Ain't you dancing tonight, son?
00:50:01I'm drinking tonight, Mr. Willoughby.
00:50:03Careful, that Applejack. Don't put your lights out.
00:50:06Seen Owen?
00:50:07Start bleeding again. Jen took him to the house.
00:50:30Too tight?
00:50:32The tighter the better.
00:50:34You seem to be getting in a lot of trouble lately.
00:50:37Trouble?
00:50:38You don't have to, you know.
00:50:40You can stop them from saying those things about you and Lily.
00:50:43Oh, I don't mind.
00:50:44I happen to like Lily.
00:50:47There.
00:50:48Here, let me help you.
00:50:52Thanks, Jen.
00:50:55Owen,
00:50:57you can't make it up to Lily by yourself.
00:50:59Lee was half a man and...
00:51:06I want to see Jen alone.
00:51:12Wait, Owen.
00:51:14Stay.
00:51:15What do you want?
00:51:18I'm leaving in the morning, honey.
00:51:20Big roundup.
00:51:21I've you gone a long time.
00:51:22I know that.
00:51:25Well, I've got to say goodbye, don't I?
00:51:27Well, goodbye then.
00:51:29Oh, no.
00:51:29Not like that.
00:51:31Not anymore.
00:51:35Leave me alone.
00:51:39Oh.
00:51:42It's easy enough to lock one man out as long as there's somebody else to take his place.
00:51:45I'm drunk, Lee.
00:51:47Drunk enough to see double.
00:51:48To see you here with Jen.
00:52:04I'm sorry you had to see that.
00:52:10I wish I could help, Jen.
00:52:14Just knowing you're around helps.
00:52:21There are things I'd like to say.
00:52:25What would you say, Owen?
00:52:33I'd say I haven't got the right to help.
00:52:36I'd say it's too bad.
00:52:54I'd say it's too bad.
00:53:10What do you want?
00:53:11I want to talk to you.
00:53:14How's the hand?
00:53:16Still sore.
00:53:18What's the matter?
00:53:19Still sore, huh?
00:53:20I guess you don't have much love for Daybright.
00:53:23My time will come.
00:53:27I hear the Faskin boys are getting out of jail soon.
00:53:31So I hear, and they'll still be looking for Papa.
00:53:35If I got them figured, Daybright will be dead in another few days.
00:53:39No, he'll be gone.
00:53:41Roundup?
00:53:42That ain't gonna be hard for them to find.
00:53:44Oh, a couple of saddle tramps like them would be picked up in no time at Roundup.
00:53:50No.
00:53:51In order for them to join, they'll have to have a letter of authorization from some well-known brand.
00:53:56Like yours, say.
00:53:58Daybright would try to keep them out.
00:54:00Sure, he will if they try to join the Western Division.
00:54:04But if they write to the Eastern Division, present your letter, they can get in.
00:54:08I'll be with the Eastern.
00:54:10Likely his wagon captain.
00:54:14East and West divisions meet, don't they, to finish up the Roundup?
00:54:19Yeah.
00:54:21To finish up.
00:54:24You know, Herb, I should have made that check much bigger.
00:54:27That was a bad beating you took.
00:54:30Yeah.
00:54:32An awful beating.
00:54:36Jones Western.
00:54:40Huey, you're with me.
00:54:44Stu Miller Western.
00:54:47More of your recent.
00:54:55Hung over?
00:54:56I feel fine.
00:55:00How'd you make out with Baggett yesterday?
00:55:02I bought the stairs.
00:55:03Good price?
00:55:04$250.
00:55:06Just for cattle?
00:55:09Yeah.
00:55:13I've decided to take your advice, Owen.
00:55:15I'm getting out of the country after this roundup.
00:55:19You?
00:55:20Starting all over again?
00:55:21Working for a living?
00:55:22Yeah.
00:55:23Just like that.
00:55:25What about Gin?
00:55:26I'll send for her when I'm ready.
00:55:28She'll join me.
00:55:34The nice morning the day we left.
00:55:36The sun warm on your shoulders.
00:55:38But we didn't feel good.
00:55:41This time there was something under your wishbone that said we were in for grief.
00:55:50Seems like they were just coming home from the winter drift.
00:55:53We turn around, they're off again.
00:55:54How do you feel about another month with me?
00:55:56Scare you?
00:55:58You'll wait for him alone this time.
00:56:00What's wrong, Gin?
00:56:03Something to do with Lee?
00:56:04I can't talk about it, Arch.
00:56:07Well, it sounds final.
00:56:09It is final.
00:56:14I was going to leave without telling you.
00:56:16Were you, Gin?
00:56:17Can't I help you?
00:56:20You can't always make it up for him.
00:56:23I always have, till now.
00:56:27That's part of the trouble.
00:56:29Look, maybe it's my fault.
00:56:31Maybe it never could have worked.
00:56:33I'm restless here.
00:56:35I've been alone so long, I'm used to it.
00:56:39We've never lied to each other.
00:56:40We don't have to start now.
00:56:43Are you running away from Owen because he loves you?
00:56:48You're a good woman, Gin.
00:56:49Your life should be rich and peaceful.
00:56:51But if you run away from it now, you'll spend what's left with bitter memories and doubts.
00:56:58Wait till they get back.
00:57:02That's something like what Owen said.
00:57:04It's good advice, Gin.
00:57:15The spring roundup is a cow hunt.
00:57:17In the winter, they drift.
00:57:19The aim is to get them back to the home range.
00:57:23Besides that, there's the calves.
00:57:26They make a tally, brand, crop, and dehorn.
00:57:33I was with Owen in the Western Division.
00:57:35We worked hard and the hours were long.
00:57:38We didn't measure time by the day but by the green end of the grass.
00:57:43It was all planned well and the work went even and smooth.
00:58:16It was all planned.
00:58:17Get on.
00:58:18What about our guns?
00:58:19Get inside.
00:58:20I'll throw them on the back platform after the train starts.
00:58:24You were going to kill a man, remember?
00:58:26I ain't through yet.
00:58:27Next visit?
00:58:28That's right.
00:58:29Now I'm worried.
00:58:45I can't hold this!
00:59:02The sheriff told you to stay out.
00:59:03What do you want?
00:59:05Be neighborly.
00:59:06Help you find the man you're looking for, eh, Bright?
00:59:08Why do you care?
00:59:10I run a business.
00:59:12It's the business of moving cattle fast over long distances.
00:59:16Mostly in rainy weather and at night.
00:59:19Daybright bothers me.
00:59:20Why don't you level on him then?
00:59:22That shouldn't bother a man like you.
00:59:24And Hank? No.
00:59:26I'm looking for someone to shoot him who's got a right to.
00:59:29You found him.
00:59:31Here's the setup.
00:59:33Daybright's on Roundup.
00:59:35I can get you into it legally.
00:59:37Once you're there, you'll have no trouble finding him.
00:59:39Go on.
00:59:41When this train hits the top of Bench, Brad,
00:59:43it'll be slow to a walk.
00:59:45We get off there.
00:59:47I got three horses waiting.
00:59:49Daybright will sure be surprised to see us.
00:59:52Yeah.
00:59:53Come on. Here we are.
01:00:06Let's go.
01:00:21On the other side of the mountain, Lee was with the Eastern Division.
01:00:38More!
01:00:43Cut out all Omar brand. It's local.
01:00:45Turn them over to Mr. Jenkins here.
01:00:47Right.
01:00:47어飾ary.
01:00:51On the other side.
01:00:56Get out, Omar.
01:00:57Get out, Omar.
01:00:59Get out, Omar.
01:01:00Fog.
01:01:17Go, go, go!
01:01:40Lee!
01:01:41Lee!
01:01:42Lee!
01:01:43Lee!
01:01:50Referee that brand.
01:02:09I read Obar.
01:02:10I take it back.
01:02:11It looked like mine.
01:02:12Satisfied?
01:02:13Satisfied.
01:02:13He's yours, Jenkins.
01:02:28What brand?
01:02:29Obar.
01:02:31See that pair with the pack horse behind Hardison?
01:02:38They brought this.
01:02:40Claims to represent an outfit near you.
01:02:45Yeah.
01:02:46They're from our part.
01:02:49Know his two riders?
01:02:51Yeah, I've seen them.
01:02:52All right, I'll assign them to your wagon.
01:02:54No, no.
01:02:55Some of the boys haven't a very friendly feeling for that brand.
01:02:58Well, if they're wrong ones, I'll send them whistling.
01:03:00Well, you can't do that.
01:03:01They got a right to their stock.
01:03:03We'll keep a close look out at the stuff they cut out.
01:03:05Meanwhile, assign them to another wagon.
01:03:07Somebody who doesn't know them.
01:03:09I don't want them around me.
01:03:10Well, that's fair enough.
01:03:22In Lee's division, the work was the same as ours.
01:03:26They'd make the combings, snake them out of the draws, gather them, push them toward the middle.
01:03:54Hey, first of our stock we've seen.
01:03:57Yeah, they've really wintered.
01:03:59Have you earned anything on the home range?
01:04:01Yeah.
01:04:02Looks like a bonus for all hands.
01:04:05Arch will be a rich man.
01:04:08So will you.
01:04:09You're a partner now, ain't you?
01:04:13That's right.
01:04:14I was forgetting.
01:04:19Well, I got a half of summer's work laid out.
01:04:21I'm heading for Texas to reach stock.
01:04:23How are you going to get your beef from Texas all the way home to Montana?
01:04:27Yeah, by the time you buy your herd, Kansas will come up with some new kind of fever and quarantine
01:04:31you out.
01:04:32If you move to New Mexico, the same thing will happen.
01:04:35I reckon you'll just have to stay put in Texas, and that's no life.
01:04:38Now, son, you must have heard of railroads.
01:04:41I'm just going to lock my herd up in airtight boxcars, put a bag of that clean Texas air in
01:04:46each car, and unload in Montana.
01:04:57Say, my name is Strobey.
01:04:58I don't think I got your name.
01:05:00Oh, Dave Allard.
01:05:01I, uh, I gathered you're sending your crew back to Montana with your strays while you head for Texas to
01:05:06restart.
01:05:06That's right.
01:05:07Well, I can save you the trouble.
01:05:09I'll have 3,000 double-wintered steers for sale at the end of roundup.
01:05:14In good shape?
01:05:16You're picking them up every day.
01:05:17Look at them.
01:05:18They've got our brand.
01:05:20What price?
01:05:21$14,000.
01:05:22Laid down at Wet Mountain Meadow.
01:05:25$14,000.
01:05:28You just made a deal.
01:05:30I'll have to find the nearest telegraph station, and it'll take a few days until I can cover a check
01:05:34for $42,000.
01:05:35That's all right.
01:05:45THE END
01:06:13Here's some hot coffee
01:06:14Well, thanks, Mr. Willoughby
01:06:16Why don't I save my money and buy a nice warm store I can sit in
01:06:20I've seen them stores, they're drafty
01:06:22Beats washing away, sure does
01:06:27Come on in, out of the weather, friend
01:06:29What are you, East or West Division
01:06:32Wet
01:06:34Name's Allard
01:06:34Dave Wright
01:06:36Thanks, I needed this
01:06:38I need a horse, too
01:06:39I wanted to ride on through tonight, and mine's beating
01:06:42Huey, get the man a horse
01:06:46Where are you headed for?
01:06:48I left the East Division for a few days
01:06:50I'm looking for a telegraph
01:06:51Missed it in the rain, huh?
01:06:53Man could miss anything in this
01:06:55I don't know whether I'm drowned or not
01:06:58Well, there's a telegraph at our meeting place
01:06:59The Wet Mountain Meadow
01:07:02Huey, change the man's saddle
01:07:03While he finishes his coffee
01:07:05Say, is that your brand?
01:07:10That's right
01:07:12I just bought your herd
01:07:14That's why I was looking for a telegraph
01:07:15To get my credit in shape by wire
01:07:17Bought
01:07:18You must be mistaken, mister
01:07:21Trobe owned the brand
01:07:23Yeah
01:07:24That's it
01:07:25Three thousand double winter steers
01:07:27Delivered at the meeting place
01:07:31Trobe is the owner, ain't he?
01:07:33He can sell them
01:07:35Is there anything wrong?
01:07:39Not a thing, friend
01:07:40Not a thing
01:07:44Well, thanks for everything
01:08:14I didn't think you could plan that far
01:08:16You reckon that's why Lee made his bid to be partner?
01:08:19That's why
01:08:20Sell the beef and get the money to clear out
01:08:23What's he running from?
01:08:28There's people he has to answer to
01:08:31You always stand up for him, don't you, Owen?
01:08:37When you're loyal to a man, Huey
01:08:38You're loyal to everything about him
01:08:40Even his faults
01:08:41Even his son
01:08:46It's funny what you just said about Arch
01:08:48I've been feeling that way a long time
01:08:50About somebody else
01:08:55About Lily
01:09:03Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
01:09:04no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
01:09:04no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
01:09:04no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
01:09:04no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
01:09:07no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
01:09:25Let's go.
01:09:57Day by day and hour by hour, the two divisions pushed closer together.
01:10:02So did Owen and Lee for the showdown.
01:10:09Only an hour away, Owen.
01:10:10The eastern division is over the next hill.
01:10:46No matter what the city is, Owen.
01:10:48No matter what extent it is, Owen.
01:10:53All right, let's go.
01:11:00Hiya, big fella.
01:11:01Howdy, O.
01:11:05How are you feeling?
01:11:06I'm making too many days in the saddle.
01:11:08I'll take it.
01:11:09Lay around?
01:11:10Yeah, lay!
01:11:12Owen!
01:11:13How did it go?
01:11:13How are you?
01:11:14Oh, a spoon of silk.
01:11:17What's your count?
01:11:182,000, yours.
01:11:19Good, a little over 1,000.
01:11:21Well, that gives you Allard's $3,000 and some to spare.
01:11:27Who's Allard?
01:11:29The man you're gonna sell the herd to.
01:11:33That's right. So it is.
01:11:35There'll be news to Arch.
01:11:37Especially since he's planning to go down to the panhandle and buy more stock.
01:11:41The deal's going through.
01:11:44I'm Arch's foremanly.
01:11:45And I'm a partner.
01:11:47I pay half your wages, remember.
01:11:49You give me half my orders?
01:11:51Your orders are to keep your nose out of my business.
01:11:53And let you steal Arch's cattle.
01:11:56I'm a little harder hearing, Lee.
01:11:59The day after tomorrow we start for home.
01:12:01It's a big herd. The man the wanker get run over.
01:12:06You better tell Al it was a mistake.
01:12:08To forget about it.
01:12:10Your orders are still to keep your nose out of my business.
01:12:13Wait a minute, Lee.
01:12:16I don't get it.
01:12:17You don't think you can pull this off with me around, do you?
01:12:43You don't think you can pull this off with me around, do you?
01:12:46I was working down by the river, past the last of the wagons.
01:12:49Don't make sense.
01:12:51What?
01:12:52Well, passing one of the wagons, I saw those two faskins.
01:12:55You sure? No mistake.
01:12:57They've been on round on.
01:12:59I stood there talking with the rest of the crew, needed a shave.
01:13:02They've slept in wet clothes like us.
01:13:06Lee knew it and didn't say anything.
01:13:08And he isn't worried like he should be.
01:13:16Owen.
01:13:21You know, I've been thinking about that deal I made with Dave Allen.
01:13:26Yeah?
01:13:28I admit, I made a mistake.
01:13:29Like I always do when I haven't got you around to steer me.
01:13:33Well, I'm glad you see the light, Lee.
01:13:35Yeah.
01:13:36Yeah.
01:13:37Well, I'd better get down to the depot,
01:13:39and stop Allard before I get too involved in that deal.
01:13:41Fine, you go ahead.
01:13:43Will you come with me?
01:13:46I'm pretty busy here.
01:13:48Well, it'll be much more convincing when you're around.
01:13:52All right, I'll tell Mead we're going.
01:14:01Lee and I are going over to the telegraph.
01:14:03We won't be long.
01:14:04All right.
01:14:22Lee and I are going over to the telegraph.
01:14:27All right.
01:14:28Remember now, we don't blast till day bright gets to that boulder.
01:14:31Yeah, I'll remember.
01:14:37Looks like this is our last roundup together, Owen.
01:14:40Oh, I tried to pull a fast one on you by grabbing that Allard deal,
01:14:43but I couldn't.
01:14:45So I'm going anyway.
01:14:47Just like I told you I would.
01:14:48Fine.
01:14:49I'm leaving you to win right down the line, Owen.
01:14:52I'm leaving everything.
01:14:54Arch.
01:14:55The Ranch.
01:14:56Jen.
01:14:57You.
01:14:58It's yours.
01:15:00The Works.
01:15:01You sure you thought this out good?
01:15:03You've been trying to tell me for years how to do the right thing.
01:15:07You gave me the straight line about getting away from here
01:15:09and beginning all over again.
01:15:11I just kind of hate to do it, that's all.
01:15:13Maybe it's because, uh,
01:15:15we've had a lot of fun together.
01:15:18We have at that, huh?
01:15:20Remember that time in Kansas City when Arch took us to the Cattlemen's Convention?
01:15:23Yeah.
01:15:25I played cards with the big Texans.
01:15:27Yeah, I remember.
01:15:27You beat him in five cold poker draws.
01:15:30Right.
01:15:30That's when I found out what good a kicker was.
01:15:34Yeah, we sure had a lot of good times.
01:15:36That's what I'll miss.
01:15:38I'll miss him too.
01:15:41No matter how old you get, there's that part of growing up you never forget.
01:15:44I'm glad you said that, Owen.
01:15:46I'll remember that when I'm gone from you.
01:15:58Now.
01:16:32Come on.
01:16:38How old you're in?
01:16:40Come on.
01:16:42Where's Owen?
01:16:44Somebody's in trouble.
01:16:45Take a minute and go see.
01:16:59Go around the other side.
01:17:00Try to sneak up behind them, I'll cover you.
01:17:17Let's go.
01:17:48Let's go.
01:18:18Let's go.
01:18:44Let's go.
01:19:15Let's go.
01:19:18Let's go.
01:19:46Let's go.
01:19:57I'm taking you in, Lee.
01:19:59We're gonna settle up.
01:20:01Not a chance.
01:20:03We're gonna face Arch and tell him the whole truth.
01:20:06For once.
01:20:08Come on out.
01:20:10You're forgetting.
01:20:12I still got my kicker.
01:20:15I always could outdraw you, Owen.
01:20:18I'll spot you then, but it won't change anything.
01:20:22Come on out.
01:20:24Or do I have to come in and get you?
01:20:44What's the whole story, Arch?
01:20:46All of it.
01:20:48It was in front of me for years, Owen.
01:20:50I refused to see it.
01:20:52I lied to myself.
01:20:53You lied.
01:20:54To make it easier for me.
01:20:56You didn't kill him.
01:20:58I did.
01:20:59A long time ago.
01:21:02The day I looked away and hoped he'd change.
01:21:05Hoped he'd work out.
01:21:15I'll have to tell Jen.
01:21:17I'd like to tell her myself.
01:21:42You thôi.
01:22:01A long time ago.
01:22:02Go, Bill.
01:22:02Go, Bill.
01:22:02Go, Bill.
01:22:02Go, Bill.
01:22:02Go, Bill.
01:22:05Go, Bill.
01:22:07Go, Bill.
01:22:11Go, Bill.
