00:00Luke here with the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel and I'm spending the next six days here in the Arctic of
00:05Alaska.
00:05I'm going to be solo camping in my hot tent on the frozen Bering Sea.
00:09I'm going to be fishing for king crab through the ice, hunting for ptarmigan,
00:12and my family's going to be joining me later on as well.
00:41All right, guys, welcome to Gnome Alaska.
00:47Ah, got one room, two rooms.
00:57Gnome's got a population of about 3,500 people, and it's about a one-and-a-half-hour jet flight
01:01from Anchorage.
01:02It's an old historic mining town here in Alaska.
01:07Oh, look at that beautiful sunrise.
01:09It's been a crazy winter here in Alaska.
01:12Gnome only got snow a few weeks ago.
01:15Usually this time of year, the ocean's frozen solid.
01:17We can go out and fish on it.
01:19I have real concerns about that.
01:23My friend John lives down here.
01:25First thing I'm going to do is swing by his house.
01:29Hey, John.
01:30Hey, Luke.
01:31It's good to see you.
01:32Thank you for having me.
01:34So how about this weather, man?
01:35I know.
01:35It's been a weird winter, huh?
01:37Three different people have already told me about how weird the ice is.
01:40Oh, yeah.
01:41I already have two pots out there.
01:43Two of them are set and two of them are on the ice, so we can set them.
01:49I brought two shrimp pots.
01:50We're going to try for some shrimp, too.
01:52No, too big.
02:05So we're going to be taking this gear out onto the frozen Bering Sea to go look for some king
02:09crab and shrimp.
02:10And right now, we're on frozen salt water.
02:13This is the Gnome Harbor right here.
02:15We'll see how the ice is doing because apparently a large chunk of it broke off and drifted away.
02:21So we don't want to be on one of those when that happens.
02:32There's some gold miners diving for gold under the ice over there.
02:36We're going to go check it out.
02:42This is someone's gold claim.
02:44It doesn't look like they're here, though.
02:45They'll use the auger to cut a big hole in the ice, and then they'll send a diver down to
02:50the bottom with a big vacuum dredge.
02:52And he'll suck up the sand and gold off the bottom and send it through this sluice box right here.
02:57The divers will have to have a boiler that pumps hot water into their wetsuit in order to be able
03:02to stay down and work in the cold temperatures.
03:05It's pretty hardcore stuff.
03:15There's a fox on the ice pack over there.
03:22I was wondering what that fox was doing on the ice pack.
03:26Looks like he was hunting ducks.
03:29Look at all the organs and meat are just picked clean.
03:32It's been such a warm year that there's still ducks out.
03:35That's unbelievable.
03:37There's almost never ducks this time of year.
03:43Nice flat area.
04:14Not too bad.
04:23Woo!
04:24Exercise.
04:26All the cows here alone try to do this.
04:37Alright.
04:38So this is a little bit of an experiment.
04:40Fishing for king crab through the ice is really popular here, but I haven't met anybody who fishes for shrimp
04:46through the ice.
04:47But last year there was tons of shrimp being caught in the crab pots.
04:50So I thought, hey, if we bring a proper shrimp pot with a proper mesh size, we might really catch
04:55a ton of shrimp.
04:56You got some frozen salmon heads for bait.
05:02Alright.
05:03Let's see.
05:08Put a little styrofoam over the hole to keep it from icing up and then put a piece of plywood
05:12on top of that to keep snow machines from going in.
05:14That and marking it with a stick should warn anybody.
05:17Alright.
05:18Let's go get another spot.
05:43We'll let those sit overnight, we're going to go check a couple crab pots that have been soaking.
06:02There she is.
06:06There's a couple.
06:09And the starfish.
06:11Nice.
06:12There you go.
06:14Oh, look at that.
06:15It's pretty.
06:15Yeah, those are nice sized ones.
06:18Look at the size of that.
06:23Oh, there we go.
06:24Look at that.
06:26Big old Alaskan red king crab.
06:28I think it weighs about what?
06:30Two, three pounds?
06:31Look at that big old king crab.
06:36More starfish.
06:41Looks like another male.
06:43Another gorgeous crab.
06:46He's got to tuck his legs to get inside that cooler.
06:49These are big crabs.
06:50Especially that one.
06:51That's a chonky crab.
07:16Oh, that's a jumbo starfish though.
07:19The starfish was eating this little sculpin.
07:23Well, enjoy your meal.
07:24Bacon grease.
07:27Tom caught salmon.
07:28All right.
07:30All right.
07:35All right.
07:53That thing broke off.
07:55That auger broke.
07:57That's why it went crazy.
08:00We're going to head back to town and see about getting another auger.
08:13In the summertime, the gold miners dredge off of these boats.
08:16There's a whole bunch of them.
08:18All pulled up out of the ice.
08:26So, I want to go camping on the ice pack tonight.
08:29I'm going to go get my camping gear out of the hotel.
08:32While I do that, John's going to go ahead and hunt down an auger.
08:37I got camping gear and now I just need some food and supplies.
08:42Stop in here at the AC store and get some groceries.
08:51Okay.
09:00All right.
09:07All right.
09:08We got an auger.
09:09We got our gear.
09:10Let's go.
09:37Just barely.
09:39Yep.
10:07I can see a little bit of snow.
10:08Oh, yeah.
10:09There's quite a bit of snow in there.
10:10It's probably melting into the air filter.
10:12Oh, I see.
10:13Oh, look at all that snow.
10:14Yeah.
10:16That'll do it.
10:17This is all wet too.
10:20Yeah, that'll do it.
10:21I'm two for two for breaking John's augers, but I like to mix it up a little bit.
10:25So, this time I got a whole bunch of snow and water in the air filter, which has flooded
10:29the engine with water, which isn't good.
10:54All right, there we go.
10:55Got a nice little spot out here on the Bering Sea.
10:58Got two holes to fish through.
11:00Now, I just need to set up my tent.
11:06Normal tent stakes won't go into ice, so you have to use screws.
11:22Every single time I set this thing up, though, it's bigger than I remember.
11:40While I was fussing with the tent, John cut another hole for a crab pot.
11:56Perfect.
11:57We'll let that sit and see what's there tomorrow.
11:59But I'm feeling pretty good about this spot for as far as fishing goes, but there's one downside.
12:05We're really close to the edge of the ice.
12:07From time to time, large chunks of ice break off and drift off towards Russia.
12:21This right here is loose moving ice.
12:24You can see it.
12:24It's actually drifting right there.
12:29To give you an idea of how close we are to the edge, that's our crab pot and right back
12:36there is my tent.
12:37Other than the ice breaking underneath me and drifting off to sea, my only other real concern is polar bears.
12:43Normally, the polar bears don't come around Nome until the ice breaks up.
12:47And that usually doesn't happen until April, but, you know, the ice is breaking up.
12:52So, you know, I'm sure, I'm sure they won't be any polar bears.
12:56It'll be fine.
12:58It'll be fine.
13:00It'll be fine.
13:05Let's see how we're doing in here.
13:11I'm going to borrow some of this foam from John.
13:15Give me something to sit on.
13:23This right here is a titanium wood stove.
13:26It weighs about a pound and a half.
13:40Let's go.
13:45Sì
14:23All right there we go. It's warming up nicely in here. I've got my gloves hanging up so they can
14:29dry
14:29and I think it's time to start doing some fishing.
14:34So this right here is a crab snare. You tie it to the end of your line, you put some
14:38bait inside the
14:39cage and you drop it down at the bottom of the ocean and a crab will come along and start
14:43eating on it
14:43and hopefully one of his legs will get caught in these little snares. I've got a frozen tomcod here.
14:52Some shrimp pellets.
14:59All right I've got a little lure. I'm going to drop down there and see if there's any tomcod or
15:03flounder.
15:12All right we've got two rods set up. We'll see if anything moves them. My boots are kind of wet
15:17and my feet are very cold. The thing about hot tents is all the heat rises so it's really cold
15:24down here on the floor and it's really hot up here. So if I can get my boots up higher
15:28they're
15:28going to dry out. Hang my socks up. Put my boots next to the stove and see if they dry
15:43off.
15:53Let that warm up.
15:55All right.
16:15It's a classic grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup.
16:27Oh that's good. I think I'm going to go ahead and top off that grilled cheese sandwich with
16:31a nice little dessert. I worked hard today. I earned it.
16:37I think it's time to hit the sack.
16:40Now I want to keep the fire going all night but I don't want to be waking up and stoking
16:43it all
16:44the time so I'm going to use one of these Duraflame logs.
16:49There we go.
16:54Well it's been a good time so I bought all the last footage.
17:05It looks good.
17:09But you better see it.
17:09The foot is converts from there.
17:20ah my sleeping bag's starting to warm up and it feels good i'm so tired i'm just gonna sit here
17:25and watch my fishing rods but unless i get something on i'll see you guys in the morning
17:31well good morning it's about 8 a.m and as far as i know i haven't drifted off to russia
17:36and i
17:36haven't been eaten by a polar bear very strong start to today i haven't seen any action on the
17:41rods but i think they're both frozen in the hole so uh i might have to break that loose and
17:46see
17:46what's going on i'm not 100 sure what the temperature is outside but i can tell it's dropped
17:51aggressively it's cold in here it's really cold you can kind of use the frost line to gauge how
17:57cold it is outside the higher up it is the colder it is it feels like it might be close
18:02to zero
18:02degrees fahrenheit outside it's pretty cold but the sun's gonna come up in about a half an hour
18:07and i am completely out of firewood so if i don't want it to get really cold in here i
18:12better go
18:12outside and start cutting some more wood oh i am bleeding feathers
18:22my boots the toe box is dry and warm and this part is very cold
18:29my ankle is icy cold and my toes are so warm it feels really weird
18:49i think i want to check the fishing rods now see what's up
18:52so the hole's iced over my line's stuck so i could have a fish on and i wouldn't even know
18:57it
19:06oh look at this a little crab oh he was tangled up in my line he's kind of fuzzy
19:15oh it's a female crab oh she's got eggs see she's those are her eggs in there i don't know
19:21what kind
19:22of crab that is but let's put her back the shrimp and crabs have been at it look the bait's
19:27all
19:27bones there's hardly any flesh left on the bait i'll have to freshen that up
19:36i got the rods rebated and dropped back down we'll see if anything hits while i make some food
19:52all right
19:58oh curses well i just lost an egg i'll have to refinance the house to get another
20:03let's see if we can keep this one on the skillet stay where you are mr egg
20:11hey hey nope nope
20:19there we go a little egg and sausage sandwich the ketchup isn't frozen but it's thicker than normal
20:31well we made it to sunrise i think it's time to check my fishing rods and see if we got
20:35anything
20:37oh something what was that oh something dropped off
20:43it wasn't a crab but there was like a starfish or something attached to it
20:47saw it drop off right at the hole
20:56it's cold it's about 10 degrees outside
21:01well it is a beautiful day out here i think i'm going to clean up a little bit then we're
21:06going to go check the shrimp pots
21:10alrighty
21:21well we got one starfish and there's a crab in here but it's not a king crab
21:30i don't know what kind of crab that is but we'll let it go
21:36there there's a sculpin
21:37see he's going up like this to make himself big so you can't swallow him
21:42we'll let him go throw a fresh salmon head in there
21:45try it again see what happens
21:53here's the second shrimp pot
22:01well that's disappointing there were so many shrimp in this spot last year they were getting
22:05stuck in your rope
22:06been really weird weather this year so i guess it shouldn't be a surprise that the animals
22:11are behaving different all right i'm gonna go check one of the crabs traps
22:20this is a new crab trap john dropped down last night we'll see if it's got anything in it
22:33there we go there's one
22:37there's two two good looking males right there
22:40not skunked look at that
22:48yeah two crabs it's not bad for less than 24 hours
22:57tell you what this spot's been a bit of a bust
22:59i don't know if i want to camp here a second night
23:10oh the wind's starting to pick up and that's making me a little nervous
23:13never tried this tent in high winds before but i wouldn't want to test it
23:42that the crab fishing's a bit slow i think i'm going to drop this stuff off at job it's place
23:46and then go grab my gun and do a little tarmigan hunting
23:49after john gets off work i think we come back and check the pots
24:14the hardest part about hunting tarmigan is finding them
24:18i'm looking for an all-white bird in the middle of all this snow that's why it's so important to
24:23go on these sunny days
24:43i just saw one tarmigan up on that berm and he just hopped over into the brush
24:51oh there they go they just flew over there
24:54these are all tarmigan footprints right here
24:56all right let's go find their buddies
25:06you can see a whole bunch of tarmigan prints right along those willows
25:15i keep seeing tarmigan but they're skittish very skittish
25:29i saw a red fox run out in front of me
25:32in the old days they used to hunt them by running them over with the snow machine
25:36doesn't damage the pelt as much as shooting them
25:42well the sun's getting low i think it's time to get heading back but this has been real fun
25:56hey john sorry to keep you waiting
26:02all right we're gonna go check some crab pots
26:12yeah there wasn't much ice forming yesterday today it's a different story
26:20oh one and a starfish
26:22that's another male right
26:24uh-huh
26:27there we go
26:30they are so cool
26:33all right okay i'll put them in the cooler before he freezes up
26:48that's a big old crab right there
26:50look at all the sea lice
26:53they're eating on the bait
26:54all right
27:02all right we're gonna try the shrimp pot
27:09another one of those little fuzzy crabs
27:12oh i got a little sea urchin in here
27:24oh that is interesting
27:26it's a definitely an ocean flavor but it's different than i've had
27:55i'll tell you what i'm glad i pulled the ted down it's supposed to get the 30 mile per hour
27:59winds tonight
28:05my feet are so wet and cold i cannot wait to get these boots off
28:10oh this is nice i'll see you in the morning
28:19all right
28:30i didn't sleep very well last night
28:32i woke up with this headache
28:34just nasty
28:42i'm not 100 but i'm feeling a little better so i think i'm gonna go try
28:46doing a little hunting
28:47all right
28:49oh it's colder today
28:51and feel it in the nose
29:02the ice shelf broke away here in front of town
29:05just last week people were gold mining and crabbing out there
29:18look at that thing
29:21yeah that's a sweet k truck
29:41yeah i just haven't seen anything
29:51well me and john are gonna go set some more crab pots
29:54we heard there's a spot a little further down that's producing
30:10this place is called cripple river
30:12it's a little seasonal native community where they come here for subsistence fishing in the
30:17summer nobody here this time of year there's lots of little seasonal fishing communities
30:23like this around alaska
30:45our fingers are getting cold just watching you oh it's actually mine are hot as if you keep moving
30:51they really don't feel the cold
30:56it's a nice big hole
30:57i know
31:18well beckon the kids are gonna be landing at the airport in about 20 minutes so i'm gonna freshen up
31:22and run over to the airport

34:54A lot of mining equipment
34:56Dredges out there
34:57Can you see him yet mama?
34:59No
35:01Oh it's standing up
35:02Yep yep you see him?
35:03There's a whole bunch of Tarmigan over in this field
35:05But it's across the street from the high school
35:07So that might actually be a crime if we try to take him out
35:11Sure
35:13Oh yeah
35:15Tommy you want to take him?
35:17Yes sir
35:18Let's see if he'll even stick around when we get out of the car

44:08We've got a couple of leftover danishes we want to eat for breakfast
44:10Of course they're a little bit more stale than they were yesterday
44:12So I'm going to run them under water and throw them in an oven
44:16Put them in a paper bag
44:17And just briefly put it under water
44:20Heat up the oven to about 350
44:23Give it about five minutes and they'll be soft and warm
44:28Oh feel that
44:30Feel it
44:31Is it better?
44:31Yeah I better
44:35Well it's Sunday and we're going to church in the next 15 minutes or so

46:08I'm pretty sure we saw a muskox the other day
46:10It was so far it was just a little dot on the mountain
46:13But the dots not there anymore so I think it was a muskox
