00:00award and became the laughing stock of the industry. Now Rob and Fab are courageously trying to
00:05make a comeback. Welcome to Ms. Mojo. And today we're exploring the music industry titans who had
00:11it all and lost it through deception or scandal. I just don't want to believe the truth. You don't
00:17want to believe it. Suge Knight. I want to stay a star. I don't want to have to worry about
00:24the
00:24executive producer trying to be all in the video, all on the record, dancing. Come to Death Row.
00:32Death Row Records was a key player in the 90s rap game. Co-founded by Suge Knight and Dr. Dre,
00:38amongst others, the label was the home of Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur and was known for its heavy-handed
00:44intimidation tactics. It never happened? Never happened. You didn't take him out to the balcony?
00:49How does that happen? It sounds like what occurs in other police reports involving you. Again and
00:53again, there's a pattern, Mr. Knight, where you do that. That's not true. After Shakur's unsolved
00:58murder, Snoop Dogg's departure and Knight's various arrests and eventual prison sentence,
01:03the label began to decline. By 2009, Death Row and its CEO filed for bankruptcy. But Knight's time
01:10in the spotlight ended when he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the killing of Terry Carter
01:15and the wounding of Clee Sloan, running them over with his car. In 2017, he was sentenced to 28 years
01:23in prison. If you listen to every song on All Eyes on Me, every song on Machiavelli, every time
01:30you do an interview, what's the first thing you say? Death Row. Phil Spector. I say put it out now
01:37and
01:38give the public, you know, a chance to buy it, or at least to have it, or hear it. The
01:44producer behind
01:45some of the biggest hits of the 60s was famously eccentric, temperamental, and reclusive even at the
01:51height of his influence. Phil Spector was known for his erratic behavior, and there were several
01:56instances of him threatening colleagues with guns. In the days of the, in the old days, you could do
02:01this kind of stuff. Pushed him on the plane, told him to shut up, he'd land in New York. So
02:06I have a
02:07lot of, I have a lot, a lot, a lot of Phil Spector stories. His fall from grace was a
02:12slow burn. By the
02:141980s, he was living in seclusion. In 2003, police arrived at Spector's home to find actress Lana Clarkson
02:21dead. He was tried twice, with one ending in a mistrial and the other seeing him convicted of
02:26second-degree murder. Spector died in prison in 2021. His legacy will forever be that of a convicted
02:33murderer who happened to write songs. Sinead O'Connor. Of all the countries that they went into
02:38led to distortion of historical fact, similar to the type of distortion of fact that you see going on in
02:46the media. This Irish singer-songwriter was never one for pop stardom. Her massive success in the
02:52late 80s and early 90s was at odds with her streak of unapologetic political activism. She earned enemies
02:58in the industry by calling out racism and injustice. This culminated in a widely controversial performance
03:04on a 1992 episode of Saturday Night Live. Fight the real enemy! Tearing up a photo of then-Pope John
03:10Paul
03:11II in protest of the abuse covered up by the Catholic Church, O'Connor earned the ire of the network
03:16and
03:16millions of viewers. And it is going to be offensive, yes, and many people will not survive it, but it
03:23has to
03:23happen. Although O'Connor continued to inspire in her own way, and the public's opinion of her eventually altered,
03:29her mainstream popularity was forever tempered by the controversy.
03:34To have made such an artistic gesture and spiritual gesture really, it was very, very important,
03:41you know, so I'm really proud that I got to be that person.
03:44The Chicks. The date was March 12, 2003. The scene was at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London.
03:50The United States was about to launch its highly controversial invasion of Iraq.
03:55Natalie Maines spoke for the group when she told the audience they were ashamed that President George W.
04:00Bush was from Texas.
04:13The backlash was swift and brutal. The Chicks went from chart-topping country music superstars to
04:20disgraced pariahs overnight. Outraged listeners burned records and even sent death threats.
04:25Well, the AP picked up on what you said the other night, and, uh, but don't worry, it's gonna blow
04:32over in three days, and I looked at him and I go, no, it's not.
04:34The extent of their fall was covered in the 2007 documentary, Shut Up and Sing.
04:39Although history has been kind to their statements, their time as veritable hitmakers was seemingly over.
04:44Yeah, I think we were one of the first people to feel that, to cancel culture, and I think, you
04:50know,
04:51what we said back then, or what I said back then, would not even be a thing today.
04:56Kanye West.
04:56It was about the ability to say how you felt out loud, and if I didn't have the various skill
05:03sets
05:03of music and clothing and a fan base, they would have been able to destroy me.
05:10Throughout the 2000s, the rapper behind Graduation Day built a name and reputation on being provocative.
05:16Kanye West was never one to hold his tongue. A generous reading of his antics and behavior
05:20might have considered them performance art. Over time, his music had less mainstream appeal,
05:25and his outrageousness became more and more explicitly hateful.
05:29The idea of me wearing it was funny, and I said, Dad, what do you think it was funny?
05:34He said, just a black man stating the obvious.
05:38As early as 2022, West began espousing white supremacist ideas on social media and in his music.
05:45In 2026, he penned a letter in the Wall Street Journal, saying this was a result of neurological
05:51disorders as well as his bipolar disorder.
05:54Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, is apologizing for his anti-Semitic remarks
05:58and other outlandish behavior in recent years.
06:01Michael Jackson.
06:02I think every child star suffers through this period because you're not the cute and charming
06:07child that you were, and you start to grow. And they want to keep you young forever and little
06:13forever.
06:14Who's they?
06:15The public.
06:15Few artists have ever reached the heights of talent, chart success, and media coverage that
06:21Michael Jackson did. From a rocky childhood marked by early success and a troubled home life
06:26to international stardom, Jackson is still one of the most influential pop stars we've
06:30ever seen. His 1982 masterwork Thriller is still the best-selling album of all time.
06:36But increasingly eccentric behavior, scandalous headlines, and multiple allegations of misconduct
06:42on his private Neverland Ranch amusement park estate dinged his legacy.
06:47I have a lot of pride in who I am and dignity. That's like you wanted an oriental person to
06:52play
06:53you as a child. Does that make sense? No. So please people stop believing these horrifying stories.
06:59The controversy overshadowed the latter half of his less prolific career, and continues to do so
07:04even after his death in 2009.
07:06Remember something. Just because it's in print doesn't mean it's the gospel.
07:12People write negative things because they feel that's what sells. Good news to them doesn't sell.
07:18Millie Vanilli. Ashley Simpson's SNL appearance all but tanked her promising new career.
07:23I feel so bad my band started playing the wrong song, and I didn't know what to do so I
07:26thought
07:27I'd do a hoedown. But when German pop duo Millie Vanilli were caught lip-syncing during a 1989 Club
07:32MTV performance, it was just the tip of the iceberg. Members Fab Morvin and Rob Pilatus weren't even
07:39singing in the studio. They were signed to a deceptive and predatory contract by producer Frank
07:44Farian, who used them as the face of a con job. Once they demanded to do their singing, Farian revealed
07:51the whole scheme. Their career never recovered.
07:53Well maybe they wouldn't have been so disgraced if they hadn't been so successful. They lived a lie.
07:57And when the truth was out, they lived in shame. Now they want to talk. Now they want to sing.
08:02Really.
08:03Millie Vanilli were forced to give back their Best New Artist Grammy Award.
08:06Time has been kinder to the group, considering them industry pawns who were punished for not playing
08:11along.
08:12When everything broke down, the only thing I could hang on to was music. That was the only thing.
08:17So music will always be part of my life. Always.
08:21Janet Jackson. Everyone does story-driven music videos with iconic choreography now.
08:26But Janet Jackson was dropping masterpieces with each album cycle.
08:35She was on a run of movie roles and hot singles when she appeared with Justin Timberlake at the 2004
08:41Super Bowl halftime show.
08:50But one wardrobe malfunction brought the entire country to a stop. The tearaway mishap brought FCC
08:57fines for CBS, but the anger was mostly pointed at Jackson, despite her apology. As a result,
09:03her next album flopped. However, she would recover. And she kicked off a highly successful
09:08Together Again tour in 2023. However, this still remains one of the most blatantly unfair career
09:14stalls in the history of the industry.
09:24Diddy. Sean Combs, known professionally as Puff Daddy, P Diddy, and Diddy, rose through the ranks
09:30from record company intern to music mogul in less than a decade.
09:34To me, it's very important, very important that African-American males
09:38get to see something positive. Not just who shot them this week, not the unemployment rate,
09:44not what they can't do, not incarceration, you know?
09:47He collaborated with some of the biggest legends of rap music. Despite several brushes with the law
09:52over the years, including a much-covered shooting in 1999, Diddy's raucous and exclusive
09:58parties were just part of his legend. The legend turned into a nightmare in 2023,
10:12when a lawsuit brought by former partner Cassie Ventura fast-tracked more allegations of abuse,
10:18sex trafficking, and racketeering. Combs faced brand deal losses, boycotts, and a massive public
10:24backlash. He was convicted on only two of his five charges and sentenced to over four years in
10:30prison in 2025. And his reaction when those people went away, went away. I feel like I need
10:38to wash. Like, I'm dirt—that—that was—it showed you his character.
10:51Before we continue, check out the single from Sound Mojo's album Balance, classical music reimagined
10:57as rock, hard rock, and metal. Check out the full track and album below.
11:16R. Kelly.
11:17I hope this camera keep going.
11:18No, we're gonna let the camera keep rolling.
11:19This is not true. This doesn't even make sense. Why would I hold all these women?
11:25Beloved in many households for his smooth R&B sound, the artist behind tracks like I Believe
11:31I Can Fly, Ignition, and Step in the Name of Love was a staple on many a party playlist.
11:37Unfortunately, his crimes were even more prolific. His alleged misconduct with the late Aaliyah,
11:43instances of kidnapping, sex trafficking, and various abuses of power and influence had been
11:49rumored for years.
11:50I'm doing my thing. He's a great producer, a great artist, who I do admire, and there's nothing,
11:56nothing there at all.
11:57A 2002 case dented his success, although he was acquitted. But in 2019, a disturbing documentary,
12:05Surviving R. Kelly, brought his crimes back to the light.
12:08It took a while for me to just really think to myself and figure out, you know what,
12:12this man really has a problem.
12:14It was a steep and completely deserved fall. Kelly was finally arrested, tried,
12:19and convicted on all nine of his federal charges. He was sentenced to 31 years in prison.
12:25R. Kelly faces charges in other states, and now that he has been found guilty here,
12:30it could open the floodgates.
12:33Who did we leave off this list? Let us know in the comments.
