00:02This program is rated G
00:04and considered acceptable for all ages.
00:12Previously on Renovation Resort.
00:14Kitchen day.
00:15Teams took on the heart of the home,
00:17the kitchen, and the dining room.
00:19This is when you were in the kitchen dance.
00:20A design twist changed the whole layout.
00:24Why?
00:24There's so much to do.
00:25Uh-huh.
00:27I see issues already.
00:28Oh, my God, I'm so stressed out.
00:30In the end, Taylor and Mare Dad's
00:32Japanese-inspired design scored their first win.
00:35Beautiful.
00:36Which means this competition is officially tied.
00:41Go for it.
00:42Now the teams enter uncharted territory,
00:44and there's no playbook for what comes next.
00:47Got no bunkies in Texas.
00:51The ultimate renovation competition is back.
00:55We built four brand-new lake houses from the ground up.
00:59Now, four powerhouse designer-contractor duos
01:03from across North America
01:04will take on the ultimate renovation competition.
01:07Their mission, to turn these blank slates
01:09into amazing vacation destinations
01:12in just eight weeks.
01:14The team with the best lake house
01:16will be crowned renovation resort champions.
01:19And take home $100,000.
01:24I'm Brian Baumler.
01:25And I'm Scott McGillivray.
01:27Let the lake house battle begin.
01:29This is Renovation Resort.
01:38Coming from a big win from the kitchen and dining,
01:42we want to keep this momentum going,
01:44and we want another win.
01:46I'm going in beast mode.
01:48We're doing this.
01:48Yeah.
01:48We're winning.
01:50I'm ready to go.
01:51What you got for me, Scott?
01:53Where's Brian, though?
01:54Yeah, I don't know.
01:56Hello.
01:57Just stop.
01:58It's only one of you.
01:59I thought I'd show you
02:00what an improvement looks like for once.
02:03For the past few weeks,
02:04you've been working hard on your lake houses.
02:06You've also fixed up the shoreline.
02:08Your primary bedrooms and bathrooms are done.
02:11The kitchens are done.
02:13So you're probably wondering what comes next.
02:19And you also might be wondering,
02:21or perhaps you don't care,
02:23but where is Brian?
02:25Hey, Brian!
02:27Oh.
02:27What's happening right now?
02:30Whoa.
02:31Whoa.
02:32Whoa.
02:33Watch my house.
02:36Hi.
02:38Watch where you're going.
02:45You guys miss me?
02:46Yeah.
02:47Yes.
02:48Oh.
02:48Hi, Scott.
02:49Oh, hi, Brian.
02:50You found your way back.
02:51I want to show you something.
02:56You guys ready for a surprise?
02:58Not really.
03:00Oh.
03:04Wow.
03:05Okay.
03:06It's wood.
03:07What are these shenanigans about,
03:09and how does it affect me?
03:10What is that for?
03:11You're probably wondering what this is.
03:13Yeah.
03:14Yeah.
03:14This week, your challenge is to build bunkies.
03:18Wow.
03:19What is a bunkie?
03:20Good question.
03:21Like an underground bunk?
03:22Not an underground bunk.
03:24It's a bunker.
03:24Yeah.
03:26A bunkie is a standalone multi-purpose structure that provides additional living space for
03:30your lake house.
03:31We have to build it.
03:33You and me.
03:33Yes.
03:34I've never built anything in my life.
03:35We are handing you everything you need to build your new bunkie, but the function of
03:39the new space, well, that's going to be up to you.
03:42There's a platform set up between your lake house and the shoreline.
03:47We've given you materials with instructions.
03:50You've got one week to complete this test.
03:51I'm sorry, you said one week?
03:53You have one week, but the kits are ready to go, and they're all the same.
03:58Now, we want to make sure that these don't just complement your lake house, but we want
04:02them to steal the spotlight and become the place that everybody wants to hang out when
04:06they come here.
04:07Okay.
04:08We know this is a surprise, so we're not asking you to carve money out of your $150,000
04:13lake house budget.
04:15We are giving each team an additional $10,000.
04:19Okay.
04:21We want to finish these spaces.
04:23Does everybody understand the assignment?
04:25Yeah!
04:26The battle of the bunkies starts now!
04:29Go for it!
04:30Let's go!
04:30Come on, Thomas!
04:33Bunky, bunkie, bunkie, build yourself a bunkie!
04:37Asking the teams to fabricate a bunkie, design, implement that design, and impress us in only
04:44a week, it's a big ask.
04:45This is wild.
04:46I can't believe we have to build a bunkie.
04:50I'm just going to try to go as fast as we can so we can get a head start on
04:53the inside.
04:54We're going to fly at this.
04:56Stack those ones together.
04:57Okay.
04:58Got no bunkies in Texas.
05:02But we're going to learn to make one.
05:05I'm really not interested in building this thing, like, at all.
05:09Directions say we have minimal fasteners and each of the logs interlock together.
05:14So it should be a fairly simple project, but it's a lot of work to do.
05:19Mm.
05:19This is going to take a long time.
05:22So I'm going to need Shalanda to put on her gloves and grab a hammer.
05:26Mm-mm.
05:29Still up.
05:29Okay, hold on a sec.
05:34I've never built a bunkie before, so this is new.
05:37This is new.
05:38I don't know what to do.
05:39It's a ton of work for just how limited time we have.
05:43I'm scared.
05:44Not only do we have to figure out how to build this bunkie, figure out what pieces of wood
05:49we're even using.
05:50We should just be putting things in piles because so we know which one.
05:52I know.
05:53But I don't know how the...
05:55Oh, my gosh.
05:55We also have the pressure of Thomas beside us, who is building it in, like, the flash.
06:02And we're still trying to figure out what pieces go where.
06:05Mar, that doesn't go there.
06:07I just keep looking over there, seeing what he's doing so I can copy it.
06:10If you grab two more of the doorway ones, that'd be great.
06:13Yep, no problem.
06:19Beast mode.
06:23We are flying through this.
06:26Thomas is definitely holding up his end of the bargain.
06:29I'm looking at the other teams, and they're not even started.
06:33Okay.
06:40Hammer it like you mean it.
06:41Don't hit my hand.
06:44This is how long it takes to do one.
06:45Look at them.
06:46They got so many.
06:47I know.
06:48I'm trying.
06:50It's in.
06:51There we go.
06:54Thomas basically got a whole house.
06:58He has a commercial complex with units for sale already.
07:03And we have three little logs.
07:06And I'm tired.
07:08Keep hammering.
07:09I'm keeping hammering.
07:14Oh, my back hurts.
07:22We're ahead.
07:22Can we just take a break for a moment?
07:25You've earned it.
07:25I could use a break.
07:27What's going on?
07:28What are you thinking here?
07:29So, I'm trying to think design for the Bunky and how we can really make an impact.
07:33I was thinking we turned the Bunky into a fun hangout kind of games area.
07:38I like this, a little space that's away from the house to, you know, have a little fun for the
07:43family.
07:43I want to embrace these interior wood panel walls, so let's paint them a soft gray to give it a
07:48modern cabin feel.
07:49Then, we'll build a big bench that runs the length of the Bunky, padded and cozy so it can double
07:54as a day bet.
07:55On either side, open cubbies for storage and a mini fridge tucked in, I'll add a game table in the
08:01center and fill the walls with vintage board games, cards, and quirky accessories to give it some personality.
08:07I got even more stuff to do now.
08:09Let's get back to work.
08:10Okay, I'm glad you're on board.
08:14Melissa, I've come up with a perfect idea.
08:16What is it?
08:17I'm thinking we create this space that's a creative getaway for all of the guests.
08:23Ooh.
08:23Think of our family.
08:24What do we love?
08:25Music.
08:26Yeah.
08:27And performing.
08:28Right.
08:29Let's bring that all into this cabin.
08:31I'm thinking we hand paint the floors maybe in a checkered pattern.
08:35Let's add some curtains to the back of the wall.
08:37I love the idea of hanging instruments from the ceiling.
08:40We can fill the space with tons of different artistic elements so the guests can be inspired.
08:45We'll add some sort of daybed against the wall.
08:47I also love the idea of a hanging chair to relax in.
08:51Our experiences at Lake Houses growing up has really inspired us to create a beautiful setting here but also a
08:57very comfortable one.
08:58We're all just very creative and have a true love for creating an atmosphere that people feel special in.
09:06See ya.
09:10We've got so much to do and my mind is on getting to designing this thing.
09:14It's coming.
09:15Ooh.
09:15Shalana's tired.
09:17Not third person, Shalana.
09:20Tell me what your vision is.
09:22I'm thinking a junk canoe thing.
09:24Junk canoe is this Bahamian street parade full of costumes and music and just a party vibe and I feel
09:33like that would be perfect for this little bunkie.
09:35How about I add a mural?
09:38I love that.
09:40A Liz original.
09:41Yeah.
09:42I'll do it.
09:42A bunkie reminds me of a Bahama beachfront hut so I want to enhance that feeling starting with our coral
09:48color on the door and window shutters.
09:51Inside, the heart of our bunkie will be the feature wall with one of your beautiful custom murals.
09:57Let's whitewash the walls and bring them to life with colorful Bahamas and junk canoe themed artwork.
10:02Then, we'll add a bar to really nail that party vibe.
10:06I think I'll layer in fun furniture and tons of musical instruments.
10:10I love all the design ideas, but there ain't gonna be no party if we don't get this thing finished.
10:15So here you hammer.
10:16Let's go.
10:17Can I dance while I hammer?
10:18Yeah, let's go.
10:19Ay.
10:20Ay.
10:22There we go.
10:23Look how fast they are.
10:24I don't know.
10:25I'm trying.
10:26Yeah, we're a little behind.
10:27What?
10:28There's not low.
10:28A whole bunkie in a week is just, it's, it's, it's, I'm at a loss of words.
10:34I am stressed out.
10:36Self-comparing.
10:37Let's go.
10:37Our team is so behind.
10:41Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
10:42It's crooked.
10:43Taylor's bunkie face is gonna keep me up at night.
10:55I feel like we have an opportunity with this bunkie to create sort of a bonus room that we wouldn't
11:00have had the chance to do in our lake house.
11:02So I'm thinking, because you and I are both very health conscious, what do you think of the gym?
11:09Love it.
11:10My friends and I will never stay at a vacation rental that doesn't have a gym of some sort.
11:13Yeah, same.
11:14I'm actually a certified personal trainer.
11:17Get out.
11:17Yeah.
11:18It could be like Moonlight Bay, class Murda's training session.
11:21Yeah, I can come here and train people and make some side money on the weekend.
11:24Yes.
11:24All right, what's the plan?
11:26I want to create a gym space that's an extension of our lake house.
11:29So let's continue the dark motif.
11:32Add slatted panels, two arched shelves, a full-length mirror with lights.
11:37Then we'll stock it with gym equipment and add a cheeky neon sign to finish it off.
11:42All right, shall we?
11:43Okay, let's get to work.
11:48Building a bunkie is fairly straightforward.
11:52Thank you, thank you.
11:54Finishing the bunkie is the most difficult part.
11:57Yeah.
11:58So first, I'm going to start by priming the wall, and then I can get started on the mural.
12:03I'm thinking huge mask.
12:06Yes.
12:07Super wide.
12:08And then the rest can be like radiating outside of it, but keep the mask like dead center.
12:14The mask is such a big cultural significance in the Bahamian junk canoe parades.
12:20That's going to be a wow factor when Scott and Brian come in, especially Brian.
12:24He's going to immediately understand the junk a new thing.
12:27Exactly.
12:28I can help you whitewash.
12:29You focus on making that the thing.
12:35I see.
12:36I see.
12:37I see.
12:37I'll take my time and make sure I do it exactly.
12:40It's consistent.
12:41So we start here.
12:42Go down.
12:42Go up.
12:43Don't just start going all over the place.
12:45Black stain, you know, it might have to do two coats, so I've got a bench to build.
12:49You're on it.
12:50No problem.
12:51Better put your astronaut suit on.
12:53Okay.
12:56Look at this to make it some progress on the bunkies.
12:58I like that.
12:59The battle of the bunkies is on.
13:00My curiosity has peaked.
13:02Well, let's go check in and see what they're up to.
13:04Okay.
13:08Even though we're behind Thomas and Tatiana, we've always been like a slow and steady win.
13:14I don't know we're slow and steady.
13:16We're not behind.
13:16They're just ahead.
13:18I don't even want to think about that.
13:19I am beside myself.
13:21Merida, Taylor.
13:22Morning.
13:23How are we doing?
13:23How's our bunkie build coming along?
13:25It's coming along well.
13:27It's good.
13:27Right?
13:27Yeah.
13:28It's coming along.
13:29We thought we'd start with you because we noticed you're a little further behind than
13:32everybody.
13:33We're just taking your feedback and I'm going a little bit slower.
13:37I want to make sure what we're doing is right the first time, not having to redo
13:39work.
13:41I will say it is a little daunting, but we just got to focus on what we're doing.
13:45What's the overall plan then?
13:46How's this going to connect to the main house?
13:48Merida and I are both very health conscious people.
13:50So we have the opportunity to actually build a gym in this small area.
13:55What I know from hospitality, people that travel that are health conscious and more
13:59and more people are into health and wellness.
14:01Yeah.
14:01They want to come here and experience nature, but they also want a place to work out.
14:04So all the neighbors are probably going to be over here at some point as well.
14:06For sure.
14:07Brian has admitted eventually he's going to start using a gym one day too.
14:11I'm wasting away.
14:13I'll just grab my dumbbell and get out of here.
14:16Good luck.
14:19This is the hottest fashion straight off the runway from Dallas, Texas.
14:23Cute.
14:24It's a lot.
14:24Cute.
14:24Real cute.
14:25Twirl.
14:27Get to work.
14:29What is happening here?
14:31See what I put it together like this?
14:33Oh, wow.
14:35Wow.
14:36You have no idea how happy it makes me to see you so invested in Bunky life.
14:42Yes.
14:43Even though we didn't know what that was.
14:45Yeah.
14:45So now that you've learned what a Bunky is, what is your idea for a Bunky?
14:50We're going Junkanoe.
14:52Oh, wow.
14:54I wish I had my whistle.
14:56Let's call this the Bunkanoe.
14:57Oh, actually, that's kind of cute.
14:59It is.
15:00The Bunkanoe Junkanoe.
15:01I like that.
15:02That is a theme that cottage country is probably going to learn something new.
15:06Yeah.
15:06Tell us about Junkanoe.
15:07Junkanoe is a Bahamian tradition started with enslaved people who were celebrating their
15:11resilience.
15:12And it is about fun and enjoyment and freedom.
15:15And it's something I enjoyed growing up, going to the Bahamas in the summers.
15:20It is a full party for every sense.
15:23Yes.
15:24How is this going to turn into Junkanoe?
15:26What's it going to be used for?
15:27It's going to be a place for people to sip, relax, listen to music, just like a place
15:33to vibe.
15:34Yeah.
15:34Liz is about to do one of her custom murals that you guys already loved when we did the
15:39land challenge.
15:40Oh, I'm excited for that.
15:41We're about to blow you away.
15:43So the entire Bunky will be a mural or?
15:46Just the back wall.
15:47People are going to want to book immediately.
15:49What is that?
15:49It's brand new.
15:50It's fresh.
15:51It's exciting.
15:51Are you ready to bring it?
15:53Are you ready to receive it?
15:55We'll take it.
15:55All right.
15:55Have a good one.
15:56Wow.
15:56That's going to be a party.
15:57Do you have a whistle?
15:59No, no.
15:59You need a whistle.
16:02Coming off of last week with the kitchen, there was so much to do.
16:06I love that the only project for me are these floors.
16:09Looks like a rug, but not a rug.
16:11It's a floor and it's paint and stain.
16:13I'm excited.
16:14Hello.
16:15Here we are.
16:15Hello.
16:16Hello.
16:17Our first guest.
16:18Your first guest and what can we expect?
16:20Welcome.
16:21What am I looking at here?
16:22This is a place where you can come, pick up a guitar, paint a picture, write in your journal.
16:28Do you remember that time I found your journal and then I found out all those things you were
16:31writing about me?
16:32Yes, I do.
16:33I just wish I could be like him.
16:34Remember all that?
16:35Yeah.
16:36Yeah, that was cute.
16:37So you're starting with an inlay on the floor that painted and stained?
16:41We're going to be painting and staining, yes.
16:43Have you ever done this before?
16:45Not with stain, so it should be interesting.
16:47I've only done it with paint before, so.
16:49Okay.
16:49What's concerning you right now?
16:51Because the main focus is the floor, I'm worried of timing-wise for that because it's
16:56like we can't step on the floor and get it dirty and get it chipped and all that.
17:00So are you saying you don't think you'll be able to hit the deadline?
17:02We're going to get it done.
17:03Oh, yes.
17:03Melissa, we're getting this done.
17:04Obviously.
17:05Yes.
17:05There's a lot of work to do here.
17:07Yeah.
17:08You better keep creating.
17:10We will.
17:10All right.
17:11Thank you for inspiring us.
17:12Yes.
17:13They were talking to me.
17:14I really hope it's not going to look all streaky.
17:17Longer strokes.
17:19Okay, backseat driver.
17:21Tatiana and Thomas.
17:22Oh, hello.
17:23What's happening?
17:24Tatiana's working.
17:25Thomas is watching.
17:26Supervising.
17:27We're switching it up.
17:27We're staining the exterior.
17:29The whole thing is going to be this color?
17:31The whole thing.
17:31That's a huge amount of work.
17:33It's going to be bold.
17:34Tell us what's going on.
17:35There's some framing.
17:35There's some MDF.
17:36Yep.
17:37So what we're doing here is a 30-inch day bed.
17:40This is going to be some shelving for games and stuff like that.
17:44And this is going to be the mini fridge.
17:46I feel like this is where your carpentry skills are really going to pay off.
17:49I hope so.
17:50How are we going to see this bunkie tied in with your main lake house?
17:54What is missing from the main house?
17:56We thought of an amenity space where people can break off.
18:00Right.
18:00If people want to go to bed early or if they're allowed there, this is kind of the space to
18:05come and hang out.
18:06All right.
18:06There's like 2,600 houses that are short-term rentals in this area, and there's actually only a few that
18:13are doing above 70,000 annually.
18:16There are specific amenities that we've actually thought about to increase your ROI.
18:21So strategically with everything that I've thought out, I feel like it's going to put you in one of the
18:25top performers.
18:26Come on.
18:27This is a moment right here we need to remember.
18:30This is the very first time a competitor has done local market research in a competition about a short-term
18:36rental property.
18:37She's after my heart.
18:38Wow.
18:39She's after my heart, you know that.
18:40The fact that you're calculating the ROI on everything you do, that is a huge competitive advantage.
18:47I love that, but don't let it distract you from actually completing the work.
18:51We still got a lot to do, and we got good competition.
18:54All right, we'll leave you to it.
18:55You have a big agenda.
18:56Good luck.
18:57Let's get back to work.
19:09What is this?
19:13Oh, God.
19:16Guys!
19:16What?
19:17Come down here!
19:18What's going on?
19:20Oh, no.
19:21Another one?
19:22Y'all already know it's more work.
19:31Open it.
19:32Fine.
19:33God.
19:35Oh.
19:37This week's design detour goes beyond the bunkie.
19:40Oh.
19:41Your challenge now extends into the outdoor space around you.
19:44Make it cohesive with your overall theme, a true extension of your bunkie and lake house.
19:50Get ready, teams.
19:51It's time to take your vision outside.
19:54Scott and Brian, I told you it was going to be more work.
19:59I'm as frustrated as a bull during flat season.
20:02Does that mean super frustrating?
20:04Yeah.
20:06Let's get to work, everyone.
20:08Wow.
20:09You know what we're going to do?
20:10I have no idea.
20:11With this design detour, we have so much added pressure now.
20:15We got a bunch more work to go.
20:17For this design detour, it would be nice to see their yards and their bunkies work together,
20:23almost like an extension of each other.
20:25They need to turn these bunkies into a destination.
20:28Outdoor space now?
20:29Really?
20:30This space has to have a lot of color.
20:31I'm thinking a beautiful stone fire pit.
20:35Yoga mats with a privacy board.
20:37Okay.
20:38I love the idea of the stonework to be in a circle so that it feels like you're gathering around
20:43the fire together.
20:44The chairs around the fire pit, I'm thinking a bright teal.
20:47We're definitely going to need a deck out here for easy access in and out.
20:51Yeah, totally agree.
20:51I do like the idea of a lounging area.
20:55You could lounge out and enjoy the water.
20:58So what do you think? Outdoor shower as well?
21:00It's a great idea with the lake.
21:01A lounge chair or two in there.
21:03They've got to go here.
21:04Facing the water.
21:05And take advantage of this view.
21:07For sure.
21:08And I want to make a tumbling tower.
21:10Life size.
21:11Okay.
21:12Can you make that for me?
21:14Adding a lot to the list here, but okay.
21:16I don't know how we're going to get this done.
21:24Woo!
21:25I love it.
21:26Look at that.
21:28My grandfather, he loved junk canoe so much.
21:33The junk canoe came down the street and he dropped that cane and started dancing when he heard the whistle.
21:39That makes me tear up.
21:42I brought up something for me.
21:43My daughter's mural.
21:45My daughter's mural, so.
21:47The last mural I created before I came here was for my daughter's nursery.
21:52The theme was like this flower garden.
21:56And then seven days after our baby shower, I went to the hospital and gave birth to her and she
22:04didn't have a heartbeat.
22:06So that mural sat abandoned for a very long time.
22:10That's kind of when it hit me that the mural was really significant.
22:15So I guess she lives in all of my art where she was my best creation, I guess.
22:35It is absolute chaos on site today.
22:38There's a lot happening.
22:39We're hustling to meet our deadlines.
22:41So it's all hands on deck.
22:43We're trying to build fences and lay grass.
22:46Everything is just happening all at once.
22:48It's total chaos, Brian!
22:49There it is!
22:51Do you want it right up to the lid?
22:53Just like that.
22:54I'm a red seal carpenter, which you can use all over the world.
22:57It means I'm a journeyman.
22:58It means I'm qualified.
23:00Okay, watch your fingers.
23:02I used to just walk onto construction sites like, hey, you need a carpenter?
23:06I have like a quarter inch gap.
23:09That's what we want.
23:10Okay.
23:10That's perfect.
23:11I knew at a young age that I wanted to be a general contractor.
23:14And most general contractors are carpenters.
23:17Oh, man.
23:17There is no electrical.
23:19There is no plumbing without the carpenters.
23:21Time for a nap.
23:33Do you want me to get you another box?
23:35No.
23:36Because we don't have enough.
23:38That was it.
23:39Unfortunately, we ran out of flooring.
23:41That sucks.
23:42I know.
23:43Like a box.
23:44Literally.
23:45Scott and Brian are going to call us out for that immediately, which I don't want.
23:48I know.
23:48That's like an immediate L.
23:49Yeah.
23:49We need to figure out a solution and pivot.
23:51Okay.
23:55Oh, shoot.
23:56If we were kids again in this creative cabin, we would be having a ball.
24:00How is this going to work?
24:02I got to put my thinking cap on.
24:06Younger, Melissa would be swinging on that swing.
24:10Get it to the side as much as you can.
24:11I am.
24:13And being told what to do.
24:18I feel like a little kid.
24:22Adding an outdoor shower will help increase our amenities.
24:27Coming in from the lake, have a nice little shower out there.
24:29Why not?
24:31It's going to be something that stops the scroll that guests see when they're looking to book their short-term
24:37rental.
24:38I think it's a smart choice.
24:39Hold on.
24:40Can I finish the shelf first for those little knickknacks on there?
24:48This looks so good.
24:50We came to the best possible solution on how to cover this gap.
24:54I will paint it black and it'll be consistent with the rest of the flooring.
24:58Yes, let's do that.
24:59I honestly think this looks better than if we had finished it with the material.
25:04You got the edge.
25:05Hold on.
25:05Let me get under it.
25:06There we go.
25:07These bunkies are meant to be their own self-contained units.
25:11And what better way to solidify that than for them to generate their own power.
25:17I feel the energy.
25:18I'm absorbing the sun.
25:21We're going to install some solar panels on the roof and a battery.
25:24So any power that's consumed in there is completely renewable.
25:27Just take those two wires and touch them to your tongue.
25:30See if the panel's working.
25:32It only needs, what, two hours to charge the battery full?
25:35Yeah, two hours to one kilowatt.
25:36I'm going to need this.
25:38What are you doing?
25:41You're not getting any power unless you bring us that ladder back.
25:51At this point in the competition, these teams are exhausted.
25:57They've already run the marathon, they just need to get over the line now.
26:01And they're going to have to dig deep and find that energy.
26:04It's not done.
26:05Okay, because it's so short.
26:07Of course, yeah, it's not done.
26:08This tumbling tower that you decided to do is taking way longer than I thought.
26:13These all need to individually be sanded on all six sides, edges beveled.
26:20Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, for sure.
26:21You know what I mean?
26:21Because you started this project, I feel the stress.
26:23I'll do this?
26:24Yeah.
26:24I don't want to feel that stress.
26:26How do you turn this on?
26:29Shutters are found all over the Bahamas to protect from hurricanes.
26:34There is now hurricane glass and they're not necessary, but they still remain such an important part of the culture.
26:39We definitely wanted to include that on the exterior.
26:46Okay, this bunkie's a little tricky.
26:48It's a smaller space and I really want it to feel like us.
26:52Styling a room is my absolute favorite part of my job.
26:55Maybe a day bed is what we're thinking.
26:58Nothing too big.
26:59It has to be something that's comfortable.
27:01Ooh, I like that.
27:03That's so pretty.
27:04This one has a trundle.
27:06Oh, the memories.
27:08Remember when you would sleep on the trundle at the cottage?
27:10Yes, I do.
27:11You didn't want to sleep on it.
27:13I love how this one, you can see through it and it feels so beautiful and airy.
27:18This is an upgrade, but I want to sleep in it.
27:19I think this is the one.
27:23Is that what the light is?
27:24That's crooked.
27:25Just look at the laser.
27:26That's all you got to look at right now.
27:27We don't have time to be polite.
27:28We're just getting it done.
27:31There's no time.
27:33We need time.
27:38Look what I have.
27:39Yay, the trundle.
27:41Just like the old days.
27:42It looks so perfect in the room, the size.
27:45I love it so much.
27:46I'm going to go get the mattress and I'm going to start making the bed.
27:48You're not going to help me?
27:49Nope.
27:49Okay.
27:53Liz.
27:54What?
27:55I forgot about the steel drum.
27:57The drum is so important to this design.
28:00We're going to use it as a coffee table.
28:05Steel drums are one of the major things played in Junkanoo Parade and all throughout the Caribbean.
28:15Okay.
28:15Need to stage all the pillows.
28:22I didn't do that.
28:23Wait.
28:24That's gravity.
28:26Okay, team.
28:27This is your final hour to finish your funky belt.
28:37Listen, I get your stress.
28:39I am too.
28:40It'll get done.
28:41Okay.
28:48Okay.
28:48There we go.
28:49Okay.
28:50I love it.
28:53Look how dirty it gets.
28:55It's because it's dirty in here, Mark.
28:59Here we go.
29:00Five, four, three, two, one.
29:07Hands up.
29:08Come and meet us at the fire pit.
29:13We've done absolutely everything that we can do.
29:17Come on.
29:18Come on.
29:18I'm feeling proud knowing that this is something we created together and that our family would love.
29:23We did that.
29:26Not everyone wants a gym, so we're taking a big leap of faith here.
29:30Your Bunky challenge is done.
29:32Congratulations.
29:35This week, we really threw you for a loop, asking you to build and design an entire Bunky
29:39from scratch.
29:41So, how are we all feeling about our new additions to the resort?
29:44Good.
29:45Good.
29:45Good.
29:46Now we know what a Bunky is.
29:49To help Brian and I assess your Bunkies, we've brought in a master builder who knows that great design is
29:55just as important as solid craftsmanship.
29:58He's renowned for infusing character into projects of any size.
30:03From rock solid builds, give it up for Randy Spracklin.
30:06Randy!
30:07Randy!
30:09There they are.
30:10I'm happy to see Randy.
30:12It's nice to have another builder come and realize the craftsmanship and everything that we did.
30:16He's got the same color shirt as me, so...
30:18Yeah.
30:19That's going to be a good sign.
30:21Are you and Thomas brothers, or...?
30:23I know, are you?
30:25Hey, everyone.
30:26How are you all getting up?
30:28Welcome to the resort, Randy.
30:29It's good to have you here.
30:30So, together, we're going to be judging the Bunkies and the outdoor areas around them.
30:35So, Randy, why don't you tell them what you're looking for?
30:37I'll be looking for solid craftsmanship, a team that stands out.
30:40Smart ways to make a small space feel so much bigger.
30:44Growing up in Newfoundland, I loved the outdoors.
30:46So, I want a bunkie that brings me outside and makes me want to soak it all in.
30:49Oh.
30:50Nice.
30:51So, teams, we're going to ask you to leave while we look around at your bunkies.
30:55Yeah.
30:56We'll meet you back here shortly.
30:57Ready to get down to bunkie business?
30:59Let's have a look.
30:59Okay.
31:00Let's do it.
31:04Taylor and Meridad, they've got a couple activations.
31:07I like the games.
31:08All this stuff is just placed here.
31:10Without the activations, we just have a lawn.
31:12For the design detour, it was all about creating an extension to the bunkie.
31:16And I like that they've connected it to the main house and done a little yoga setup,
31:20which goes with their wellness theme.
31:21But I think their big investment is inside the bunkie.
31:24Well, let's find out.
31:26Get your tights on, boys.
31:27We're hitting the gym.
31:28You wear tights in the gym?
31:30Oh.
31:38Taylor and Meridad.
31:41Okay.
31:42Build, sweat, repeat.
31:43Whoa.
31:44Oh, wow.
31:45Wow.
31:46Wow.
31:46There's a lot happening in here.
31:48They like the feature wall.
31:50Nice job on craftsmanship here, too.
31:52Yeah.
31:52The floor is nice and tight.
31:54The shelving is a smart addition.
31:55I love the idea of a gym because being in the vacation rental space,
32:00I know that when there's access to a gym, people will book longer stays.
32:03Yeah.
32:04Anyone who doesn't want to miss a whole week of working out or a whole two weeks,
32:07you can hit the bike.
32:09Yeah.
32:09You can do some yoga.
32:10In fact, you might do more working out on vacation than you do at home because you actually have time
32:14to do it.
32:15Certainly gives you the option.
32:16Yeah.
32:16My only downfall is that the size, it's like a mini, mini gym.
32:20Yeah.
32:21If I was working out in here and someone else showed up, it would be very awkward.
32:24You're limited to people here just using it for a gym.
32:27Yeah.
32:28You're not really using it for anything else.
32:29All right.
32:30One down, three more to go.
32:31We got some heavy lifting to do.
32:35Welcome to Tatiana and Thomas' outdoor experience.
32:39This is a nice setup with a fire pit.
32:41I like the stone.
32:42It's a little bit close.
32:43I think if you had kids, a big fire like this might be a little bit dangerous, but that cooler
32:48filled with drinks and fire going,
32:50and that's no better.
32:52Yeah.
32:52Let's see how it all connects together and over to the bunky.
32:55Okay.
32:56What is this?
32:57An outdoor shower.
32:58Oh, wow.
32:59It's bigger than I thought.
33:01I wonder about how practical it is.
33:03I mean, how much use is this going to get here?
33:06I think for the kids coming in, like my kids love the sand and be able to bring them in
33:10here, hose them off.
33:11And the last thing I want to do is bring them inside.
33:13Yeah.
33:13They've got the soaps, biodegradable, somewhere to hang your towels.
33:17They think of everything.
33:19Their lake house has got the brown and the black theme, and they've coordinated that nicely with the fence and
33:24the stain on the exterior.
33:26It's kind of dark and moody, but they've done the mini deck out front here, too.
33:30Yeah, the deck is nice.
33:31Be able to sit down.
33:32Let's see what's inside.
33:34Look at this.
33:34Oh, wow.
33:37It's pretty deadly.
33:38I can see the boys playing a little poker out here at night.
33:41Oh, this is great.
33:42Wow.
33:43They did custom built-ins.
33:45Pretty good job.
33:46Some games.
33:47So you've got a nice big bench.
33:48I wonder, did they make any storage underneath it?
33:50Oh, yeah.
33:51Look.
33:52Oh, hidden components.
33:53What?
33:54For life jackets.
33:55Okay.
33:55I like it.
33:56So it is a bed and it's storage.
33:58What I like is that Thomas is a real craftsman.
34:01Yeah.
34:01Custom built all of this.
34:03We've got a light in here, too, and solar on the roofs.
34:06Oh, really?
34:06So you can run this fridge.
34:08I like this.
34:09This is cute.
34:10Being able to sit back, play a game of poker, darts.
34:13There's a whole lot of activities, you know, for the whole family.
34:16And just us getting away from the kids, too, having a game.
34:19This is where we would be sent.
34:21Yeah, right?
34:22I'd be happy to spend some time in here.
34:24They've got you winning.
34:26It's accurate.
34:28Oh.
34:30Double seven.
34:31Double seven.
34:31That's not a double seven.
34:33Oh, that's just seven.
34:34Just concentrate.
34:35Okay.
34:36All right, Randy.
34:3819.
34:38That was a dart throw in our way.
34:41Wow.
34:41Anyone can find something to do in here.
34:44Let's see what else we got.
34:46Okay.
34:50Now we've got Marcy and Melissa.
34:53Flagstone walkway here.
34:54I like that.
34:55It's nice.
34:56Keeping up the grass.
34:57Yeah, nice.
34:57Keep it connected.
34:58I like the pathways are important.
35:00Fire pit.
35:01Yeah.
35:02You sing, I'll just play.
35:03There once was a by from Newfoundland
35:06who came to Renovation Resort to give us a hand.
35:09Oh.
35:10Ooh.
35:11There you go.
35:12Let's take a look at the sisters' creative cabin.
35:15All right.
35:19Oh, yeah.
35:20Very bright.
35:21They spent a lot of time working on this floor,
35:23and most of it is hidden.
35:24Yeah.
35:25I don't mind this little nesting chair here.
35:27It's nice, but it will beat up the walls
35:29if you get a few kids on them.
35:31There's a camera here and a guest book.
35:34Oh, right in the eyeballs.
35:36Oh, is that a trundle?
35:37See, I love this.
35:39You've got the bed.
35:40You've got the trundle.
35:41So my girls would be like,
35:42can we stay out in the bunkie tonight?
35:44Yeah.
35:44And we would send them out here.
35:46The struggle for me is you've got an easel,
35:49but there's no canvases, no paint supplies.
35:52There's a record player, but no records.
35:54So it feels more like it's decorated,
35:56but not as functional.
35:57Uh, it's different.
35:59It's definitely bright.
36:00I like that, you know, you can do art,
36:01but like they're only here for a short time.
36:03So are you actually going to paint a picture on us?
36:06I like the inlay on the floor.
36:07They did a lot of work with that,
36:09making diamonds and stuff.
36:10But it is going to get banged up pretty quick
36:12out here.
36:12Over the way.
36:13I don't see a whole lot of like custom builds,
36:15just more the fluffies.
36:17The fluffies.
36:18Yeah.
36:18I feel this is very niche.
36:20It's not appealing to a very broad market.
36:23Let's see how it measures up.
36:28Look at this tropical sensation.
36:31It's colorful.
36:32Ha!
36:32Where'd they find these?
36:33It's inviting.
36:34Welcome to Junkanoo.
36:35Have you ever heard of Junkanoo?
36:37No.
36:37Junkanoo is a big cultural celebration in the Bahamas.
36:41Oh.
36:41Yeah.
36:42Let's go down there.
36:43Yeah.
36:44I think it's a nice bright space,
36:46nice place to kick back and have a drink.
36:48This is the first setup we've seen
36:50that's actually taking advantage,
36:52like full advantage of the reason we're here.
36:55Yeah.
36:55And this is what I would rent for the view.
36:57Yeah.
36:57And the propane is great because not everybody knows how to start a fire.
37:01This is the bunk canoe.
37:03A lot of color.
37:04Wow.
37:04Look at that.
37:05That's bright.
37:06Oh my goodness.
37:09This mural, you wouldn't see it in any other space.
37:12It's an amazing design.
37:13It really draws you into the space.
37:14That's the first thing you see and makes you want to sit down and mix up a drink.
37:18This mural is a spectacular backdrop.
37:23Yeah.
37:23It's an amazing job.
37:24This is a little bit rusty.
37:28That's loud.
37:31That's what my brain does when I look at you.
37:41Where have we had the most fun so far?
37:43This is awesome.
37:44This one here, yeah.
37:45I feel like this is the party.
37:47Yeah.
37:47It is.
37:48It's kind of like a kitchen party back home.
37:50Yeah.
37:50Music, you know, a small space.
37:52It'll invite everybody in and have a good time.
37:54As much as I love it, it's got a very limited use.
37:58You come out, have a party maybe for an hour,
38:00and then it's an overstimulated relaxation space.
38:05I just don't know that people will necessarily use it as much as they could.
38:11It's niche, but I think everybody needs a little junk in their lives.
38:14I don't disagree with that.
38:16There's no other challenge in this competition where everything's been more different.
38:21We've got a really tough decision to make.
38:23Yeah.
38:31There they are.
38:34The shore appeal on this property just hit a new level.
38:37The bunkies for me were probably my favorite part of this competition.
38:41So far, because we really got to see everybody's personality.
38:46Each bunkie had something special.
38:48Taylor and Meredad.
38:49The gym.
38:50I thought the rubber floor was a great idea.
38:53You've got more than you need in there to get a great workout.
38:57The LED sign was a great addition.
38:59I like the wood feature on the inside, the outside, nice little area to do, some yoga.
39:03But I think you're missing a little bit of the fire pit area.
39:06It was a lot of negative space.
39:08Yeah.
39:08The gym, it's one of those amenities that's like, you know, not everybody needs it.
39:13But a lot of people won't book it if it's not there.
39:16So I think that's an advantage you have that you've got that amenity.
39:19I need to have a gym at this resort.
39:22Problem solved.
39:23Thank you for doing that.
39:26Tatiana and Thomas.
39:27I thought the space was great.
39:28I thought the layout was incredible.
39:30All the games you had hanging on the wall.
39:32Fantastic.
39:33Really loved the built-in bench.
39:34Nice custom job and nice how you got storage to be able to put all kinds of stuff into.
39:38So really good job on there.
39:40I also appreciated that the bench wasn't just a bench.
39:43It was a bed.
39:43Extra sleeping, like extra money coming in.
39:46This is a profit maximizer for your property.
39:49I know that when it comes to short-term rentals, you're trying to check all those boxes that people look
39:54for when they do their searches.
39:56So there's a lot of great elements there.
39:58If anything, I would say between the bunkie and the fire pit, you had the deck, which was nice.
40:03But you could have used a couple more stones right there.
40:05Just that final connection would have really sealed the deal for me.
40:09I agree.
40:10To see Melissa, I really loved the fire pit area.
40:12It was nice and bright and natural.
40:14The detail work that you did on the floor, you spent a lot of time laying that out and doing
40:19the painting.
40:19And it looks amazing.
40:20It looks like a rug on the floor.
40:21It's nice and light and airy.
40:23I don't know that we're the demographic.
40:25I know.
40:26Yeah.
40:27I understand that it kind of can suit a certain audience.
40:31We took a bunch of love that we have and put it in there.
40:34And we just hope that people can enjoy it too.
40:36Yeah.
40:37I do appreciate that you have put your own life into your style.
40:43I can see that you're trying to recreate the best elements of your family and your life.
40:50Yeah.
40:50And be able to give that to other people.
40:52On the guest experience side, we were just getting a hint of some of the experiences and not the entire
40:58experience.
40:58We were looking at the art and I thought this would be great.
41:00We'll make a painting.
41:02But there were no art supplies.
41:04Yes, there was.
41:05Where's the paint?
41:06Oh, shoot.
41:06Oh, there's no paint.
41:07But there was paint brushes.
41:09We saw the brushes for sure.
41:11Oh, shoot.
41:11So I feel like guests would be excited but maybe not be able to complete the entire experience.
41:16Okay.
41:16Great idea with the trundle bed.
41:19Because it is all about heads and beds and you could theoretically sleep another four people out there.
41:23And I can see how the bunkie and fire pit are going to tie in perfectly with the rest of
41:27the house.
41:27So great job.
41:29Shalana and Lizzie, you know what I love is that just a few days ago you looked at each other
41:33and then you looked at us and you said, what's a bunkie?
41:38And then you taught everybody in this competition what a bunkie can be.
41:44This by far was the bunkie that we had the most fun in.
41:50Really exciting space.
41:51Just walking in there.
41:52Love the flag outside.
41:54The nod to Bahamas.
41:55Got the nice fire pit area outside.
41:57It's propane.
41:57A little bit different than everyone else.
41:59When I look at it, I just want to mix a drink and have a time.
42:02You understood the assignment and you really brought us something that we've never seen before.
42:08The mural is awesome.
42:09Like, really nice job.
42:14Everyone really nailed this week's challenge.
42:16You've made it so hard for us because we're comparing four completely different personalities.
42:22But there was one team at the end of the day that we felt really took their bunkie build to
42:28the next level.
42:29So the winners of the Renovation Resort Bunkie Challenge are...
42:38Tatiana and Thomas.
42:39Hi.
42:41Good job.
42:45Good work.
42:47How are you feeling?
42:49Shocked.
42:50I'm like, they said our names.
42:53Extremely grateful.
42:55Congratulations.
42:56Big win.
42:59Thanks to our friends at Wayfair.
43:02Tatiana and Thomas will be able to transform their own space into their dream space because they are contributing to
43:09the world.
43:09A $10,000 cash prize.
43:12Woo-hoo!
43:15Does everybody still have a lot of gas left in the tank?
43:19I'm from Texas.
43:20We got plenty of oil.
43:21Ah!
43:21There we go!
43:23He's ready to do it.
43:24And just because we passed the halfway point doesn't mean it gets any easier.
43:29So brace yourselves.
43:31This next one is a big one.
43:38Coming up on Renovation Resort.
43:41The teams take on two small but mighty spaces.
43:44We have to give them this feel of escape.
43:48Where big ideas...
43:49My original design is not going to be enough.
43:52Spiral into bigger problems.
43:53Just asking.
43:54Any other changes I should know about?
43:56And impulsive pivots...
43:57Pull down with me so that I don't rip it.
44:00Put everything at risk.
44:01There's no way we could have done trying to do what we're doing right now.
44:04Because in this competition...
44:06I am highly stressed out.
44:08You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.
44:23I'm going to make a second.
44:24I'm going to make a second.
