Depois da Segunda Guerra Mundial, uma ex-integrante da Resistência Francesa volta a viver em seu país de origem, a Inglaterra, só que não consegue ter paz, porque está constantemente com a sensação de que não faz nada que preste. Susan Traherme arranja um emprego no ramo da diplomacia, onde conhece o diplomata Raymond Brock, com quem se casa.
