07:36perfect picture and that picture also highlights where europe stands in the ai race so if you're
07:43looking for a european open ai or google the news is grim the continent lacks hyperscale giants
07:50but hey the news isn't all bad as europe is securing its own ai supply chain and while
07:57superpowers fight over ai models european firms like st microelectronics soitec and asml provide
08:05the essential hardware to build them and this bet is on strategic autonomy the idea that you don't
08:11need to outspend your superpowers if you control the tools that drive the race huh but will it be
08:17enough well you can always ask this question to your favorite ai agent just remember the answer
08:24might vary depending on whether you ask elon musk's grok or francis mistral
08:33that was jacob janice of course reporting for us there and now to take a closer look at what's at
08:38stake for the eu we can bring in michael bloz german mep from the green party uh and mep is
08:44working very
08:44closely on eu china relations we're thrilled to have you with us good morning and of course we're
08:49hearing uh you know donald trump saying we're the two superpowers referring to the us and china so
08:54where does that leave the european union sandwich sandwich somewhere in the middle
09:00that's true um it is a moment where europe has to realize that it is not sitting at the table
09:07when
09:07the two superpowers um speak about very important things that is that is also determining europe's face
09:15so um they're two shaking hands um over the heads of european leaders and we have to um understand
09:23that only when europe speaks with a with one voice when we are better coordinating in our china policy
09:31but also in our us policy we can have an influence well that is the issue you said europeans are
09:36not
09:36around the table and everyone says if you're not on the table you're clearly on the menu how can the
09:41eu
09:42and the 27 countries survive in this world where washington and beijing are cutting deals over
09:47europe's head and neither obviously caring about the climate the environment or privacy issues
09:54well it seems that we have to realize that it's difficult to survive um if we're not speaking with
10:01one voice but it's really um europe is squeezed as it was said already um there is um a trade
10:07war with
10:08the us um happening but also if we look at our trade relations with china um this has really turned
10:15around now um there is a trade deficit of 360 billion um euros um so the question is for us
10:25how do we get
10:25more autonomy um in and more sovereignty and i think the answer is as i said already speaking with one
10:34voice it's very difficult especially looking at the member states and china is um doing this divide
10:40and and and conquer policy um but it also means for instance with regards to um energy imports um energy
10:51policy becoming sovereign by producing our own um energy and second i think also rare earth europe is
10:59absolutely dependent for all its technology and rare earth and also here we have to diversity diversify
11:04and not become not being so dependent on china and of course uh donald trump is a very transactional
11:10uh president how could deals being struck this week in beijing impact negatively european industry
11:18um yeah it was already said um when there is better relationships between the us um and china um um
11:26that can
11:27result in um well less market access for instance from um the eu to the chinese market um
11:36however i i think i want to also discuss on uh another policy area which is um security i think
11:44that's
11:44also very important and it's interesting or um well that there is a risk um that the us is uh
11:52less
11:53um focused on taiwan um and we see that the main security risk for europe currently is russia's attack
12:03um on ukraine we heard that tonight um and and yesterday there was this massive drone attack and china
12:10is supporting um uh russia russia in this if china would pull the plug um on um on the war
12:18of russia against
12:20ukraine that would really help us but it seems that they are more go entering into some kind of um
12:27imperialist uh policies um and and that's really also a problem for europe okay michael plus thank
12:34you so much for waking up early on this thursday bank holiday for joining us here live on europe today
12:39i'm moving on to book rest where nato secretary general marco luce joined talks with the so-called
12:44b9 countries mostly from the east the idea was to beef up defense technologies it comes as the us
12:51announced uh that four five thousand troops excuse me could be withdrawn from germany over european
12:57countries refusal to join the war in iran our nato correspondent shona murray has the scoop and
13:02joins me now here on set good morning shona just first tell us about these meetings well the b9 meeting
13:09was in bucharest which is the central and european countries like romania hungria hungary uh the
13:14lithuania latvia estonia and so on and they were also joined by the nordic countries sweden denmark
13:20finland and so on also president zelensky was there and mark rota secretary general of nato so it was
13:25important meeting to discuss european security and joint drone production but mark rota the secretary
13:30general was also asked about this rift with donald trump that's ongoing with nato he said
13:34nato allies have gotten the message over iran but not quite true because if you look at trump's
13:39message yesterday to reporters he said that nato was very disappointing to me nato was not there when
13:45we wanted them we don't need nato but if we need them they just weren't there so you can see
13:50that's
13:50ongoing but lots of sources i've spoken to said that really donald trump is trying to distract from
13:54what is not very successful war in iran and meanwhile of course shona you have some exclusive
13:59information about these plans of the us to withdraw troops from germany tell us more so this is really
14:04interesting made because as we know the us announced 5 000 troops will be withdrawn from nato territory in
14:10germany what i heard over the last few hours and late last night was confirmed to be by a nato
14:14person
14:15was that instead of removing the 5 000 a 4 000 troop brigade that was due to be sent from
14:20the united
14:21states to poland has been cancelled so in effect there's no net um problem when it comes to uh nato's
14:28troop force within uh europe now take a listen to mark rota the secretary general of nato when he was
14:33asked about this yesterday when you look at the u.s presence in europe it is still vast and massive
14:40and there is a clear commitment between the united states to stay involved we know that we are
14:44investing now more in europe we have always known that the united states over time has to pivot more
14:49towards asia so we are all in this all together uh and um uh obviously it is a sovereign decision
14:57of
14:57the united states where they will bring their troops how they will do that but we do this in
15:02close consultation now that's mark rota and he's not necessarily answering the question and this is
15:06interesting because in poland over the past few weeks after that announcement polish media uh was
15:12speculating that these troops could go from germany to poland in fact the opposite is the case a whole
15:184 000 troop it's a replenishment troop or brigade uh will now not be sent to poland which will obviously
15:23be very difficult for them but essentially there is no net effect to nato's troop force within uh with
15:29u.s troop forces within nato and i heard did get a confirmation on this from a nato military official
15:34who said uh nato rotational forces do not factor into nato's deterrence and defense plan so it looks like
15:41this issue has been somewhat resolved for the betterment of everybody including u.s nato relations
15:48okay shauna murray our nato correspondent thank you so much for that very comprehensive
15:52analysis but now to another story that's making the rounds here in brussels the eu has stopped
15:58short of heeding a petition by over one million europeans about banning unscientific conversion
16:04therapy designed of course to change people's identity and sexual orientation the u.s or the
16:09un excuse me is calling for a worldwide ban our eu correspondent angela scugin spoke exclusively
16:15to the eu commissioner for equality hadja labib yeah it's a torture and it's a physical and
16:22psychological harassment that could lead to deep depression or suicide and uh that's why we need
16:31really to react and to combat these practices and these young citizens who gather one million
16:38signatures succeed to create awareness uh we've launched a study and we are going to uh organize
16:45to put into place a forum for discussion uh between member state between the commission
16:50already eight member states uh took the decision in their legislative uh national legislation to ban
16:58these practices but we need to see all of them and we are going to encourage them and to show
17:05the
17:05path and by taking this recommendation we take a very strong stance we need to see these practices
17:13banned in our union but you just highlighted that eight member states have banned this how are you
17:19going to convince the other dozens that haven't done this so far what pressure are you going to put
17:24on them by exchanging best practices uh so we will show first of all that it is possible to ban
17:30no matter what is your uh political architecture i mean germany has taken this ball step belgium
17:38uh spain many countries and uh three countries at least are uh um monitoring uh are uh willing to take
17:49this
17:49kind of uh decision and um i think we need to create more awareness uh because uh frankly speaking i
17:59met many
17:59ministers and a lot of them are not aware of what are these practices about what happens if a member
18:06state does not
18:07accept accept this recommendation what what follows are from the side of the commission
18:11um it's non-binding uh this is the path that uh we did we choose um because uh we didn't
18:19want to take
18:20you know uh uh decades of discussions uh like we are doing with the equal treatment directive
18:27so we prefer to build on the goodwill on awareness and on the fact that if we need if we
18:34still believe
18:34or that our union is a union of freedom of expression of equality we need to ban this uh practices
18:46angeles goodens there speaking to the belgian eu commissioner hadja labby and in case you missed it
18:52former french president nicolas sarkozy he's back in the news again as french prosecutors are seeking
18:58a seven-year prison sentence for him for allegedly accepting illegal campaign contributions from the
19:04late libyan dictator a verdict is expected on november 30th you can read more about that story and any
19:10other stories we're covering for you here on your news.com and of course you can drop us a line
