01:00It's honestly a shambles. I don't know how it's been allowed to go on for so long because it is
01:06so dangerous for us to be here.
01:08And a swing towards inclusion. World's best disabled golfer inspires young players in Sevenoaks.
01:16Disabled golf has really grown in the last four years and I hope all disabled sports continue to grow and
01:21provide a true sustainable pathway for people to do it for a living.
01:35Our top story tonight. Unrecoverable. That's how Gillingham and Reynum MP Neshabakan described the Prime Minister's position less than a
01:45day after she resigned from his government.
01:47She is one of dozens of Labour MPs calling time on Sir Keir Starmer after a dire set of local
01:53election results for the Labour Party.
01:55But despite ministers jumping ship, Starmer says he will fight on. But for how much longer?
02:01Our local democracy reporter, Ollie Leader, has been out in Gillingham finding out how things have gone so wrong so
02:07quickly for the government.
02:08Side by side, a unified front at the Gillingham Stadium. That now feels like ancient history.
02:17It was only two years ago Neshabakan was helping launch the Labour campaign with Sir Keir Starmer.
02:24Now she's resigned from his government following a set of dire local election results where Labour lost thousands of councillors
02:34across the country.
02:36Unfortunately, I do not think that the Prime Minister's position is recoverable.
02:42And rightly or wrongly, he has lost the trust of the British public.
02:46You know, I don't think changing leader is a magic bullet that will fix all problems that we might be
02:52presented with.
02:53I'm not suggesting that. And I do recognise that there is a level of risk when you do something like
02:58this.
02:59And I recognise the potential instability it can cause. But I think it's something we have to do if we
03:04want to do what's right for this country.
03:06Neshabakan is just one of dozens of MPs calling for fresh leadership in Number 10.
03:12But what do her constituents think in the town centre?
03:17The local MPs called for the Prime Minister to go. Do you think he should go?
03:21Yes. 100%. 100%.
03:24Why is that?
03:25Because I don't think he's done Britain any good at all.
03:29Um, no, I think he should stay where he is. I don't support that at all.
03:35Um, on the border?
03:37Yeah, the country has been under a horrible situation for a long time.
03:41And nobody can repair it in one day, so he needs more time.
03:45Do you remember the, uh, what he said about, uh, Boris Johnson when he was messing around?
03:52He should resign. He should resign.
03:54So why does he take his own words and resign?
03:57Khan's not the only Kent MP calling for Starmer to go.
04:02With Folkestone's Tony Vaughan joining a chorus of voices calling for change.
04:09But so far, Kent's other MPs have held the line.
04:12With Dover MP Mike Tapp and Gravesham MP Lauren Sullivan throwing their weight behind the Prime Minister.
04:21Internal division is a big fear.
04:23As one MP summed up privately, it's stability and delivery for me.
04:29If Starmer was to go now, he'd be the fourth Prime Minister to leave their post in as many years.
04:36Medway mutiny or not, he's going to have a challenge holding on to the keys.
04:42To number 10.
04:44Olly Lieder in Gillingham.
04:46And Olly joins us now.
04:48Olly, how have our viewers been reacting?
04:51Look, this is the sort of big political event that's coming up.
04:56Every time there's some sort of tumultuous, um, happening at a local election, at, in Parliament.
05:04And I think people are getting tired of it.
05:07We put a poll out to our viewers on Facebook, on Instagram.
05:11You look at it, there's strong feelings that the Prime Minister should go 74%.
05:16That is 25 respondents out of 34.
05:20That doesn't sound like a lot, but it echoes the feelings I felt in the Gillingham Town Centre.
05:26And when you actually look at the people commenting on our posts, some of them are supportive of Nishabha Khan
05:32and her principled position.
05:35Others are asking why he hasn't resigned sooner.
05:37It shows that I think the public are also getting sick of this sort of leadership style, which has proved
05:45so divisive amongst his own party.
05:47So, in terms of Westminster, then, what's the latest there?
05:51Look, it's all up in the air.
05:54This is a free trial situation that could go either direction.
05:58Labour list, they're the inside track of a lot of Labour policy.
06:02They say 92 people are calling for the Prime Minister to go.
06:06They include two Kent MPs.
06:08And, meanwhile, 104 are backing the Prime Minister, including Tris Osborne, Mike Tapp and Lauren Sullivan.
06:17These are all Kent MPs that came in in 2024.
06:22But there are more than the 20% needed to call a leadership contest.
06:26The real question is whether or not they can get through the other procedural hurdles.
06:32Can they get unions on board?
06:34Can they get local party branches on board?
06:38The Prime Minister is arguably hanging on by a thread.
06:41But his opposition, the people who might be running against him, equally haven't called a leadership contest.
06:48So, his position is safe for now.
06:50So, quite dramatic, all in all.
06:53What's going to happen next, do you think?
06:55Well, if I knew that, Kristen, I'd probably be a millionaire by now.
06:59It's a difficult thing to predict in politics.
07:02But when you actually have a look at it, Keir Starmer said he's not going anywhere.
07:06There's a King's speech this week where they'll be laying out their agenda for the country.
07:11And he hopes that this is a recovery position, contrary to what Nishabha Khan says that he can turn things
07:17around.
07:17I suppose the real question is we're talking about his premiership in days, not weeks, not months, not years, in
07:24days.
07:24And that tells you everything that you need to know.
07:27All right. Thank you, Oli.
07:29A man from Swanley has been charged with dangerous driving after a crash near a school.
07:35The emergency services were called to St Mary's Road near Orchards Academy in Swanley just after 10.30pm on the
07:427th of May
07:43to an incident involving a car and a motorbike that two teenagers were riding.
07:47One of the teenagers was taken to a London hospital and remains in serious conditions,
07:53while the other was taken to a local facility and has now been discharged.
07:5839-year-old Stephen Harris was the driver of the car and was charged with two counts of causing serious
08:04injury by dangerous driving.
08:06And later, the investigation connected the crash with another reported disturbance nearby.
08:13A man's been arrested after a Maidstone church was sealed off following an alleged rape.
08:19Police cordoned off the entrances to All Saints Church in Mill Street at around 10.30 on Saturday night.
08:25Police were on site over the weekend.
08:27It follows reports that a woman had been raped by a man she met in the town earlier that evening.
08:32It's alleged the incident happened in two town centre locations between 7 and 10 at a venue in High Street
08:39and near the church in Mill Street.
08:41On Monday, a 50-year-old man from Chatham was arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody
08:46pending further enquiries.
08:48Local residents with CCTV or drivers with dashcam who may have been in the area at the time of the
08:54incident are asked to check for relevant footage.
08:59Three lorry drivers have been sent to prison after a violent row over a motorway services parking space.
09:05Bogdan Joa and his father Tryon and friend Simeon Rafaela attacked two fellow truckers at the Moto Medway services on
09:15the M2 after one parked in a bay they claimed was reserved.
09:19Ali Constantine Gaspar suffered a brain bleed, fractures and a seizure after a punch knocked him unconscious.
09:26The men admitted a fray with Bogdan also pleading guilty to GBH.
09:29A judge sent him to prison for 12 months and the others for seven months, calling it appalling, unprovoked violence.
09:36Two traders who scammed elderly residents for thousands of pounds through a roofing fraud have been jailed.
09:43Nelson Cooper and Scott Smith targeted homes across the county and convicted vulnerable homeowners that repairs were needed.
09:50They'd start with smaller quotes before dishing out bills of hundreds and sometimes thousands of pounds.
09:55And Chloe Brewster is here to tell us more about this shocking case.
09:59Chloe, what happened here?
10:00So this is Nelson Cooper and Scott Smith, who you just mentioned.
10:04They're both from Orpington.
10:05And as you say, they've both now been jailed for scamming elderly residents.
10:10That was across Dover, Canterbury, Ramsgate and Swanley between September 2024 and January 2025.
10:18They were offering chimney and roof repairs that weren't needed and they started with smaller quotes before quickly upping those
10:26prices and they were particularly targeting vulnerable people.
10:30An investigation by Kent Police into Cooper's company found that the repairs recommended by them had been fraudulent.
10:36And in several cases, Cooper even escorted his victims to banks and cash machines if they tried to suggest they
10:41didn't have that cash at home.
10:43A victim who'd been visited by the rogue traders in December 2024 also reported that he was advised by Cooper
10:49to tell the bank that he was withdrawing the money for Christmas presents.
10:52Police obviously involved.
10:54What did they find when they met them?
10:57So they found that, well, they seized Cooper's mobile phone and found contact details for Smith as well as evidence
11:04he was knowingly preying on elderly residents.
11:07There are also several clips which they found on the phones which was them almost taking the mick out of
11:13these elderly residents.
11:14You can hear a little bit about some of those voice notes now.
11:21Look, watch this, look.
11:23They're all the same.
11:28Christmas, Christmas money, Christmas money.
11:34And how can people avoid getting scammed in this way?
11:37Well, let's just quickly go back to how long these two were jailed for.
11:44So they were put in prison for Cooper receiving a three-year prison sentence and Smith handed two years and
11:51four months.
11:52But to protect yourself, just make sure you're always aware and to refuse on the spot repairs and just look
11:58into the companies that are knocking on your door.
12:00All right.
12:00Thank you, Chloe.
12:01That's all we have for this part of the show.
12:03We'll see you in just a few minutes.
12:05We'll see you in just a few minutes.
12:18We'll see you in just a few minutes.
36:26Johnson when he was messing around, he should resign, he should resign. So why does he take his own words
36:32and resign?

39:52Chloe Brewster is here to tell us more about this shocking case.
39:55Chloe, we've got, these are the two men on screen.
39:58What happened here?
39:59Yes, so as you say, Nelson Cooper and Scott Smith, both of these men are from Orpington
40:04and between September 2024 and January 2025, they targeted homes in Dover,
40:10Canterbury, Roundsgate and Swanley.
40:12They were there to target vulnerable people and tell them that they needed chimney and roof repairs,
40:20starting with smaller quotes but quickly inflating those up to higher and higher prices.
40:25In several cases, 39-year-old Cooper even escorted his victims to banks and cash machines
40:31if they suggested they didn't have that cash on them there and then.
40:35A victim was even told once by one of the men that he needed to tell the bank
40:39when he went up and went to pick up this cash to pay them for the repairs that were needed
40:44that he should say that he was withdrawing the money for Christmas presents.
40:48What did the police find when they were arrested?
40:50So the police seized both their mobile phones.
40:54They found contact details for the other man as well as evidence he was knowingly preying
40:59on elderly residents.
41:00You can see here the footage of them being arrested.
41:04Officers recovered messages containing video clips of elderly people unaware that they were
41:08being filmed as well as voice notes which discussed particular areas around fraud
41:14and also making jokes about the people.
41:16We can hear a little bit of that now.
41:21Look, watch this, look.
41:23They're all the same.
41:28Christmas, Christmas money.
41:30Oh, Christmas money.
41:33Cooper stated in one message to a contact that all of the jobs he'd done in Ramsgate
41:38over those few months accumulated to over £2,700.
41:42They also, officers found Smith working on a home where it was discovered that the elderly
41:46resident already paid more than £25,000.
41:49If you think of that, that wasn't even necessary work.
41:52That was totally unnecessary, £25,000 of someone's hard-earned cash lost.
41:58All right.
41:59Thank you so much, Chloe.

45:26Hello and welcome back to Kent Tonight Live here on KM TV.
45:30Now, residents in the Miller Heights apartment block have been left without water or power since yesterday
45:35and have been asked to evacuate the building. They have been redirected to Madstone Leisure Centre but residents are enraged
45:41with repeated maintenance problems with management company Centric as well as a clear lack of
45:46communication and alleged cramped conditions at the refuge site. Megan Shaw was speaking to the
45:52tenants all afternoon. It's honestly a shambles. I don't know how it's been allowed to go on for so
45:59long because it is so dangerous for us to be here. The foyer to the Miller Heights building in
46:04Maidstone was bustling as angry tenants were forced to leave their homes. An untreated
46:11leak in the basement caused power and electricity to fail with some residents catching wind of the
46:17outage as late as 11 p.m. with little time to find alternate lodgings. We've been told at that point
46:24that we were allowed to stay but they weren't really sure we didn't have any electricity no power
46:30anything like that so with no real other choice I slept here last night and this morning I came down
46:38to sort of get an idea of what's going on and I've been informed that there's been a meeting of
46:44some
46:44sort around potential condemning of the building. Some were told to book a last-minute hotel but by
46:51the morning everyone was asked to relocate to Maidstone Leisure Centre with no communications
46:56on when the situation might be fixed. And there are people that cannot hope until only for us to wake
47:03up this morning and they're saying oh it's gonna get worse that it's like we're going to leave the
47:09whole building for us to you know suck ourselves out but it's not right it's not fair we have the
47:16right to say oh this is this is wrong. Many residents expressed to me that this wasn't the only issue
47:22they've experienced in the building and their management company Centric. Everyone needs to get
47:28out of here for their own safety and they just need to be shut down it is corrupt I don't
47:33know
47:33how where all this money is going now people paying three thousand pounds a year service charges for
47:38what the lists are constantly broken the gates been broke like it's thought the building's falling apart
47:43and I don't know but they are getting paid so much money and there is nothing to show for it
47:47here
47:48apart from misery and it's literally like living in a third world country. But with no other alternative
47:54in sight apart from shelling out for an expensive hotel room and no concrete timeline of when facilities
48:01would be up and running again for those in Miller Heights it still remains a waiting game. Megan Shaw for
48:08Game TV in Maidstone. And Megan joins us live now from outside those apartment blocks. Megan what is the update?
48:21Absolutely as you said them outside the Miller Heights block and I apologise for the noise of the traffic
48:26if you can hear that. It's right in the centre of Maidstone and on a quite a busy crossroads. When
48:31I arrived I
48:32spoke to a resident who was in the process of evacuating his belongings and I asked if there
48:38was any update he said no they hadn't heard any further communications apart from that he'd been
48:43asked to leave the building and move on to either the kind of the the the place the council had
48:51earmarked
48:52that's the Moats Park leisure centre where people are congregated or to find other arrangements such as
48:58booking a hotel like some people have done so there does seem to be no kind of end point that
49:03we know
49:04and no end for for the residents in the apartment building so far. And as we've seen in your report
49:11Megan you were there all afternoon what was the atmosphere like?
49:16Absolutely well this morning residents got the memo from Centric the management company who are
49:22working as hard as they can to fix this that they needed to leave right now to take their essentials
49:27and move on either to that place I mentioned that the council had made way for the leisure centre but
49:33it was frantic it was busy lots of residents were clearly stressed as they of course they hadn't had
49:38any water or power from the night before from yesterday for some of the residents a lot of them had
49:44had to
49:44book time off work take their children out of school and and as I said there we've got no kind
49:49of
49:49communication from the management company exactly when we can expect normality to return for the residents of
49:56Miller Heights. And in terms of the management company what have they said in response?
50:03Well I tried to speak to them there but they were very busy they were surveying the property they did
50:07send a statement through I'll paraphrase it for you it's very long but they said that they're prioritizing
50:13the safety of the residents and the building on working as quickly as possible as they can to make
50:18sure that the situation is fixed but again residents are literally left in the dark here.
50:23All right thank you Megan.
50:26A young man in Whitstable has been left paralysed after a motocross accident in Swanleigh
50:31but says he hopes he can walk again. 19 year old Jamie Thomas suffered a devastating spinal injury after
50:37landing awkwardly during a race in Swanleigh which left him unable to use his legs. The accident took place
50:43when Jamie attempted to overtake another rider over a large jump and came down badly striking his back
50:49on the bike seat as he fell and fracturing his spine. His family hoped that his stem cell treatment might
50:55give him the ability to walk again but the procedure would cost £20,000. His brother Sean is raising money
51:01by taking on the London to Brighton bike ride. The UK Health Security Agency has placed posters across the
51:08University of Kent campuses encouraging students to take part in their survey following the unprecedented
51:14speed of the meningitis outbreak there. It's called the Kent Men and Cockle Carriage Investigation and
51:21we'll see students have their throat swabbed to check whether they may unknowingly carry the bacteria in
51:26their throats. For students interested in taking part you can go to the government website and search for
51:31Kent Men and Cockle Carriage Investigation under the health surveillance and reporting programmes.
51:38Now let's take a quick look at the weather forecast.
51:47Well we've got wind speeds of 5 to 15 mph, a house of 11 there in Morgate and then lower
51:53to 9 in Dartford.
51:55Wind speeds slightly increasing into the morning. We have rain though and wind speeds decreasing in some
52:01areas. Then we've got rain coming back into the p.m. We have ranges of 12 to 13 degrees across
52:07the county.
52:0813 degrees with rain on the Thursday staying on to the Friday and then we've got sun coming through again
52:14on Saturday at 15 degrees.
52:24And finally at the London Golf Club yesterday students from Five Acre Wood, a special needs school in Maidstone,
52:31were given the chance to swap the classroom for a golf course. It was hosted alongside world number one
52:37disabled golfer Kip Poppert from Sevenoaks who's helping shine a spotlight on disability golf both
52:44here in Kent and across the world. The event has also secured funding for 50 young disabled players
52:49to receive a year of coaching as organisers hope to inspire the next generation to get involved in the
52:55sport. Our reporter Maisie Walker has this story. On a course where every shot counts, one Kent golfer is
53:02helping set a new direction for the sport. Five Acre Wood, a special needs school in Maidstone,
53:08was invited to the London Golf Club to learn skills outside of the classroom through golf.
53:13It definitely gives you a bit more confidence like when you're out here with everyone else.
53:17It's more of competition really like you can see how each other like it's both improved in that few
53:21weeks as well. Even today like everyone's just happy even if say if you don't hit such a great shot
53:25you did last time everyone's still happy you like you got that very good shot down.
53:32It was an event hosted to bring not just these children together and to help develop their
53:39confidence but to support international disabled golfers compete with funding being secured for
53:4550 young players to receive a year of lessons. The world number one disabled golfer from Sevenoaks is
53:52bringing together players from across the country right here in Kent for an event to spread awareness
53:58about disability in sport. Kip Poppert is helping drive disability golf into the spotlight. Born with
54:05Cyril Paulsey he became one of the leading figures in disability sport globally, a three-time US Adaptive
54:12Open champion and multiple G4D Tour winner. Now he's turning the focus from breaking par to breaking barriers,
54:20using this event to bring people together and to inspire the next generation of disabled golfers to take their own
54:26shot at the sport. The other 18 disabled golfers who are the best in the world we're all once those
54:31children and every child deserves a dream and if there are children that want to play golf and they
54:37have a disability I want to make sure that they can do and I want to also show them that
54:41and create a
54:42pathway for elite disabled golf to be one of the biggest disabled sports in the world providing true
54:48sustainable growth and opportunity to the people playing it and golf has been something that has helped me
54:55get through a lot of tough days and a lot of operations and you never know what a kid might
55:00see that might inspire them for the rest of their life and so if they choose to golf then I
55:04want to
55:04make sure that the opportunity is there for them. Disabled golf has really grown in the last four years
55:08and I hope all disabled sports continue to grow and provide a true sustainable pathway for people
55:14to do it for a living but also just to do it full time or at the highest level to
55:20inspire the next generation.
55:21As disability golf continues to gain momentum events like these are helping to drive change opening
55:28doors for the next generation of players because here the real goal is making sure everyone has the
55:34opportunity to take their best shot. Maisie Walker for KMTV, Sevenoaks. Nearly 30 young hazel
55:43door mice born at Wildwood Trust near Herne Bay are set to be released into the wild making this a
55:49record
55:49breaking year for the sanctuary. Using what staff describe as an animal dating agency to pair breeding
55:56adults the conservation centre has had its most successful dormice season yet. Hazel dormice have
56:02declined by 70 percent in the UK over the past 26 years largely due to habitat loss and climate change.
56:11Before release each dormice will be carefully weighed and checked by the Trust's conservation team
56:16to make sure they're healthy and ready for life back in the wild. You can see the lovely
56:21dormice there, very cute. Now you've been watching Kent Tonight Live on KMTV but there's more news made
