00:01Welcome to WCW Monday Nitro!
00:05Live, cutting-edge, controversial.
00:09This is where the big boys play, huh?
00:11The program that fired the first shots of the Monday Night Ratings War.
00:16We've got a new champion!
00:18Monday Nitro was the preeminent showcase for WCW stars.
00:22It played host to many of the most unpredictable, chaotic moments in WCW history.
00:28You won a war?
00:29Today, we look back on some of the wildest hits of WCW Monday Nitro.
00:34This is WWE's Greatest Moments.
00:39He's your son, man!
00:41Oh my God, what the hell are you doing?
00:45Absolutely unbelievable!
00:47Welcome, baby, out of this year.
00:55Welcome, everyone, to WWE's Greatest Moments.
00:58I'm Michael Cole.
00:59And on this edition, we're taking a look at the show that began a war.
01:03The Monday Night War, that is.
01:05For two years, WWE dominated Mondays with their barrier-breaking program, Monday Night Raw.
01:11The very first primetime wrestling show ever.
01:15But in the fall of 1995, their unopposed reign atop Monday nights was threatened.
01:20WCW announced plans for their very own live wrestling show, Monday Night Raw.
01:25And why I wanted to go up against the competition?
01:28Because I like kicking butt.
01:30With such a brass announcement, WCW knew that it had to hit a home run with the debut edition.
01:35And boy, was that an understatement.
01:41Minneapolis, Minnesota.
01:44The Mall of America.
01:45The only building big enough to hold the debut edition of WCW Monday Nitro.
01:54At that time, WWE was live one week, taped the next.
01:58So I thought, somebody needs to do live every week?
02:01That's gonna be me.
02:03So much going on here in World Championship Wrestling.
02:07WCW where the big boys play.
02:09The first time I heard about Nitro going head-to-head with us, I thought they were crazy.
02:13We're gonna compete. Let's go. We're in a fight. Let's go fight.
02:16The one thing that I took away from all the research we did across the country,
02:20was that fans like surprises.
02:24What in the hell is he doing here?
02:27I was the surprise guy at the very end walking out.
02:30I just wrestled that weekend with WWE.
02:35It really helped set us up for great success because there was already controversy.
02:41Well, you said things were gonna happen every Monday night, Bishop, and it's happening.
02:49In the mid-1990s, Alundra Blaze was the premier female talent in WWE.
02:55What a competitor. What an athlete. And what a fine young lady.
02:59But Alundra would leave WWE to join the rival WCW as her previous alias, Medusa.
03:08While she may have left behind the Alundra Blaze moniker,
03:11Medusa made sure not to leave behind something else.
03:23Some things happened within the company.
03:26Vince made a decision. Alundra, we've got to let you go.
03:29She let me know that she was leaving WWE.
03:32And she said, oh, by the way, I still have the WWE Women's Championship.
03:38Hmm, I said to myself, bring it with, we'll figure it out.
03:44Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
03:45This is the WWF Women's Championship belt.
03:49Whoa. Whoa.
03:51Wait a minute, what? Look.
03:57Yes, indeed it is.
03:59The trash can.
04:00When I made the decision to drop the title in the trash can, it was an iconic moment.
04:06It started the Monday Night War.
04:08This is where the big boys play, and now this is where the big girls play.
04:12It was very personal to us, and it was clearly a decision, you know, to try to divide the audience.
04:18And they were successful.
04:20I'll tell you what, I'm in shock.
04:22Oh, I can't believe you dropped the Women's Championship in the garbage.
04:26He sure did.
04:28He wanted to make a statement.
04:30It was a big moment.
04:34Sting was one of the most beloved superstars in WCW history.
04:38With all-American nature, Sting appealed to fans around the globe, cementing himself as WCW's main event hero.
04:46One, two, three!
04:48Oh, he got a new champion!
04:52But in 1996, Sting ditched the bleached blonde hair and signature scream for a more dark, ominous look.
05:01Among sold-out crowds for Nitro each week, Sting would often be seen hanging from the rafters,
05:07quietly observing the actions of his foes, the New World Order.
05:11Somewhere here in the arena, there is Sting!
05:15As week in and week out, they threatened the existence of WCW, the company that Sting helped build.
05:22But in January 1997, Sting ditched the rafters for the ring, in a moment that shocked fans around the world.
05:32He's got a chair and he's daring anybody!
05:35It's going to take either a mass physical effort to get this show going here.
05:42What do we have here?
05:45That's Sting!
05:47From the top of the United Center!
05:49When Sting dropped down the very first time on Nitro, it had never been attempted before.
05:55We had a stunt coordinator that was working with us.
05:57It's like the Phantom!
05:58People went crazy because they'd been up there for 15 weeks before that.
06:02I focused on being different than the WWE in as many ways as possible.
06:07They had him come down, something new in the business.
06:11Just kind of like this lone wolf vigilante guy that came out and you never knew what was going to
06:15happen.
06:16Talk about a game of chess!
06:18Sting kind of repelling down from out of nowhere was just really consistent with the way I saw that character.
06:23That's when WCW stopped thinking wrestling to start thinking entertainment.
06:2820 stories up!
06:30That was quite a shock.
06:33Dennis Rodman is perhaps the most colorful, enigmatic star in NBA history.
06:39With his unique look at unbridled charisma, the worm was right at home in professional wrestling.
06:44The newest member of the NWO.
06:48Known for marching to the beat of his own drum, Rodman's off-court activities often took precedence over basketball.
06:54And in 1998, while firmly entrenched with his Chicago Bulls in the NBA Finals,
07:00Rodman found himself wrestling with something other than basketball.
07:07The world champion, Hollywood Hogan!
07:10And would you?
07:10Dennis Rodman is here at the Palace of Auburn Hills tonight for Nitro.
07:15Dennis called me and said, hey, I can be at Nitro Monday, do you want me to come?
07:19I didn't even think to ask him if he had a game or not.
07:22I'm feeling nothing but love for Hollywood and Rodzilla!
07:28I missed practice and go to Detroit and go in the ring with Hulk Hogan.
07:33I think an optimism to really dig what I was doing.
07:36You have no choice but to love me, right?
07:39Yeah!
07:40And so, wow, this guy's just not a basketball player.
07:42He's just an all-around entertainer, period.
07:45With Rodzilla in the house, there will be no stopping NWO Hollywood.
07:51Dennis Rodman brought so many eyes to WCW.
07:55He was fully invested.
07:57This is full life, baby.
07:58You know, I got a bunch of calls from Phil Jackson.
08:01Oh, we need him here at Prox.
08:03I can't make him go back.
08:04He doesn't want to go.
08:05He likes hanging out with the wrestlers.
08:06You gotta love this.
08:07This is life, right?
08:08Full life, forever, baby.
08:09I knew that the sports media followed his every move.
08:12And I wouldn't get advertising, quite frankly, that I couldn't afford to buy at that time.
08:15Big news has been Dennis Rodman.
08:17On Monday, he didn't show up for work.
08:20Everything's fine.
08:21Did you have a good time this time?
08:22Absolutely, I always do.
08:23And we did.
08:24Boy, did we ever.
08:25It worked out perfectly.
08:26There are some things worth missing practice for, brother.
08:32By late 1997, the Monday Night War was in full swing.
08:36And both WWE and WCW pulled no punches in trying to outdo the others for raiding supremacy.
08:42I have built the most successful wrestling organization on planet Earth.
08:49Case in point, Eric Bischoff, executive producer of WCW, sought to use the fact that Monday Night Raw was a
08:56taped show to his advantage.
08:59WCW would often announce the results of the taped Raw episodes in an effort to humiliate WWE.
09:06Later tonight, Mick Foley is going to win their world title.
09:10He's going to put some butts in the seat.
09:12With similar intent, in November 1997, WCW had fans seen double.
09:21That's Rick Rude.
09:23It's time for the Generation X.
09:27Let's bring out the man.
09:31What's he pointing at here?
09:33Who's this?
09:33I don't know.
09:34I think.
09:35Oh, holy smokes!
09:36Rick Rude?
09:39Because Monday Night Raw was taped one week, live the next week, Rick happened to be on a taped episode
09:45of Raw that went head-to-head with my live show.
09:48The other country of the generation of Rick Rude assaulting the commissioner.
09:53It's funny because he was like, he's going to be on both shows.
09:56Because our show is taped.
09:57The word is, he's going to show up live on their show, right?
09:59Oh, what a difference a day makes.
10:02Sometimes in war, you think nothing's crossing the line, but I thought that was a low one.
10:08And it was obvious to me to abandon the Titanic and swim to the refuge of the NWO.
10:17It really represented the peak of the competition between WCW and WWE at that time.
10:24It's what you call taking the fool by the horns.
10:30I began with WWE in 1997, right in the middle of the famed 83 weeks, where the revolutionary concepts on
10:39Nitro were beating Raw in the ratings on a weekly basis.
10:43Due in no small part to when Eric Bischoff created the NWO, an outlaw group that was attempting to take
10:50over WCW.
10:51But one man refused the NWO's advances at every turn.
10:56The master of the diamond cutter, Diamond Dallas Page.
11:00NWO member Macho Man Randy Savage took DDP's refusal personally, sought to make his life a living hell.
11:09Spray painting NWO on the back of Diamond Dallas Page.
11:13On July 7th, 1997, the Macho Man took on the luchador, La Parca.
11:21And it was supposed to be a tune-up match, but became anything but.
11:29La Parca, he must face a member of the NWO in the Macho Man Randy Savage.
11:36We're all just under the impression that this is La Parca doing his thing, wrestling the whole match.
11:41One, two, how about that roll up by La Parca?
11:44They take me and La Parca, I start talking like, teach me how you do your gimmick.
11:51It was so much fun just going back and forth with him, and no one knew about this.
11:56Did you see that?
11:57That's not in La Parca's arsenal.
11:59That's not something he does.
12:02Incredible!
12:02He hit him with a diamond cutter!
12:04Did you see that?
12:05That's not La Parca!
12:06That's not La Parca!
12:07That's not La Parca!
12:07DDP!
12:09He did such a good job, and the audience assumed it was La Parca.
12:13I just know I loved it.
12:14And it paid off so well.
12:16That is incredible!
12:18He pinned him!
12:20Diamond Dallas!
12:23Throughout 1998, Goldberg was an unstoppable force in WCW.
12:28The phenomenon that is Bill Goldberg.
12:32He piled up wins with relative ease by utilizing the most vicious move in his arsenal.
12:38There's a spear!
12:39But new on the WCW scene was former five-time WWE Champion.
12:45Fred the Hitman Hart has arrived to Nitro!
12:48The Hitman no doubt did his homework on the menacing Goldberg.
12:52I could beat Goldberg in five minutes!
12:55He was physically outmatched, sure.
12:58But mentally?
13:02I came to the WCW to prove that I can execute any wrestler I want, anytime I want!
13:10During that time period when I went to WCW, it was a goal and opportunity for me.
13:17William Goldberg!
13:18You big chicken!
13:20Come out here and fight me!
13:23And here's Goldberg, right?
13:25How you can take on a guy like that?
13:26He was a beast!
13:29Oh!
13:30He nailed him!
13:31Wait a minute!
13:33Bret Hart is down and out!
13:34So is Goldberg!
13:35Goldberg is not moving either!
13:37But it doesn't do the damage that it should do.
13:39What's happening here?
13:41Bret Hart is the only one moving here!
13:43Goldberg was such a monster.
13:45He hit you with that spear.
13:46He was dead.
13:47We don't see Goldberg in that position too often.
13:50He's gonna try to pin one!
13:52Two!
13:53Three!
13:55Oh!
13:56Oh!
13:57That's probably the best defense for the spear that we've ever seen!
14:02That's when I realized that it was really like the Wild Wild West.
14:05You can go ahead and respect that!
14:10When Lex Luger ignited the Monday Night War on the debut edition of Nitro in 1995, he was looking for
14:16opportunity.
14:18Unfortunately, several months later, at Bash at the beach, the New World Order was formed.
14:23And from that point on, the NWO ran the industry, with Hollywood Hogan having a stranglehold on the WCW World
14:30Championship.
14:31Who is the most powerful man in professional wrestling?
14:36I'm gonna slap you up in the rack and become the new WCW World Heavyweight Champion!
14:41The total package vowed to help put an end to Hogan's tyrannical reign as champion.
14:50We are awaiting one of the biggest, if not the biggest, matchup ever on Nitro!
14:56Hogan was the champ, but by the time we got to Auburn Hills, Lex, he's red hot.
15:00He will go after the man who has set the standard for world titles in our sport, Hulk Hogan!
15:06Here we go, on the 100th program of Nitro.
15:09What impact the running clothesline in the corner!
15:13NWO just ran roughshod over everybody that no one thought they were ever gonna be stopped.
15:17Think of the attributes it takes to become a champion, both of them have it right there!
15:23People come to you all the time, I was there that night, man, it was unbelievable!
15:26Hogan on the attack! Oh! There's his leg drop!
15:29That's it! That's it!
15:31Cover one, two, and he kicked out!
15:34The audience liked the idea of surprises.
15:39Got him now! They're standing in Detroit!
15:42Yes!
15:44He's got him in the rack! He's got him in the rack!
15:47Hogan says yes! Hogan says yes!
15:48Look at him camp out!
15:50Luger won the title! Luger won the title!
15:53That roof came off that place, because they never expected to see Hogan, who's in a title match on live
15:59TV.
16:00It is celebration time in the Motor City!
16:03The guys were really, truly excited, because we got left laying for over a year or so.
16:07Finally had a night to celebrate.
16:10It was all based on keeping the audience off balance and surprising them as often as we could.
16:16WCW is at its strongest point.
16:22During the new generation era of WWE, one of the most popular superstars was the bad guy, Razor Ramon.
16:29Say hello to Razor Ramon.
16:34Oozing machismo, Razor was a major WWE superstar in the mid-90s, capturing the Intercontinental Championship, a then record four
16:42times.
16:44Nobody beats the bad guy.
16:47But in May 1996, Ramon suddenly disappeared from WWE TV.
16:52What happened next sent shockwaves throughout the professional wrestling business.
17:00Welcome back live to the first hour of this edition of WCW Monday Nitro on TNT.
17:06Wait a minute.
17:07What?
17:07What the hell?
17:08What what?
17:09Scott Hall became available.
17:11Now the idea is starting to frame in my head.
17:14It comes down through the crowd.
17:16Hmm.
17:17Audiences are used to seeing, man.
17:19When you present them with things that they haven't seen before,
17:24they automatically assume it must be real.
17:28I'm a little skeptical.
17:30I mean, I've just left WWE.
17:32You people, you know who I am.
17:38But you don't know why I'm here.
17:42Scott was a real linchpin to taking that moment I had with Nitro to a whole new level.
17:49You want a war, you're gonna get one.
17:53People thought Vince sent me there.
17:55That's the only reason it worked.
17:58Everybody was in shock and awe.
18:00Things had just got bigger.
18:05It's now time for our number one moment.
18:08From the moment that Goldberg burst out of the scene in WCW,
18:12he displayed a hard hitting style that immediately grabbed your attention.
18:18Who's next?
18:19As months wore on, it became apparent that Goldberg was destined to be on a collision course
18:24with the leader of the NWO and WCW world champion Hollywood Hulk Hogan.
18:30Goldberg ain't nobody.
18:32He's not in the same league as Hollywood.
18:34On the July 6, 1998 edition of Nitro, in front of a sold out Georgia Dome,
18:41Goldberg finally got his crack at Hogan and the championship.
18:47Nitro, it's on the air!
18:49Where over 30,000 fans are dead in the Georgia Dome,
18:53and what will go down as the biggest night in the history of this grand sport.
18:58What I remember most is how big and how pivotal of a moment that was for WCW.
19:04There was a little bit of discussion whether or not we wanted to do it on a pay-per-view,
19:08but we're in the television business.
19:10We're not in the pay-per-view business, so it was just a perfect setup.
19:14And it could be the night where Goldberg walks away with the gun from arguably the greatest champion our sport
19:21has ever had in Hollywood Hogan.
19:22If I'm gonna be the bad guy, we need another Hulk Hogan.
19:30It's about being in the right place at the right time.
19:33He's got him off!
19:36Oh, no!
19:39One, two, three!
19:42Oh, no!
19:43Thank you!
19:43Thank you!
19:44Thank you!
19:45He's got him your NBA champion in the world!
19:49Hogan put me over in front of 45,000 people.
19:52I mean, what a cool deal that was.
19:55That match helped re-establish us.
19:58It was magic.
20:00It's been a night that we will never forget.
20:03That win was a true passing of the torch moment and signaled to the professional wrestling world that Goldberg was
20:09an unstoppable force and ready to be its number one entity.
20:13In 2001, the final Nitro aired as WCW closed its doors for good.
20:18But in six short years, Nitro packed a lifetime of memorable moments that will never be forgotten.
20:26Revolutionary.
20:27Transformative.
20:29Nitro tore down the status quo and dared to challenge the mighty WWE and did just that.
20:36Well, that'll do it for this edition of WWE's Greatest Moments.
20:39I hope you've enjoyed this look back at the very best of WCW Monday Nitro.
20:49Welcome to WWE Backlash!
20:54It is a night where the potent smell of vengeance is in the air.
20:58Look at this!
20:59Oh!
20:59Oh, my gosh!
21:00The stakes are raised.
21:02Don't do it, Shane!
21:03Oh, my God!
21:06After stepping off the grand stage of WrestleMania, some rivalries just aren't settled.
21:10When one good story ends, an even better one begins.
21:15In many instances, they're just getting started.
21:18You can just feel the tension between these two.
21:21The world tunes in as the WWE superstars prepare themselves for the impending backlash.
21:27Backlash.
21:28Backlash is coming.
21:30This is WWE's Greatest Moments.
21:52Welcome, everyone, to WWE's Greatest Moments.
21:55I'm Michael Cole.
21:56And on this edition, we're looking back at the best of Backlash.
22:00We welcome you to Backlash!
22:02WrestleMania has consequences.
22:05All scores are not settled.
22:08What will the Backlash be?
22:09So there is, quite frankly, no event more appropriately named than this one.
22:13Boy, this atmosphere.
22:15Can you feel it?
22:16In April of 2007, Cena walked in and out of WrestleMania 23, holding the WWE Championship.
22:23John Cena is still the champ!
22:26The target on his back the size of the moon, some of the biggest names in WWE would buy for
22:32a chance to take that title for themselves.
22:35You want some? Come get some.
22:39At Backlash, the leader of the C Nation would defend his title against three challengers in what may be the
22:45toughest match of his career.
22:50The first man to score a pin or a submission will be the WWE Champion.
22:58Look at that talent.
22:59You get the edge, and you get Orton, you get Cena.
23:03Every one of these men want to be the champion, but who wants it more?
23:08You know, it doesn't get much bigger than that.
23:09We're the biggest stars in the company at the time.
23:12Oh, man, in a Fatal 4-Way, you gotta watch your back. You need eyes in the back of your
23:16head, JR.
23:17You gotta watch every direction.
23:19We threw everything we had at each other, and everything about that night was so exciting.
23:25That matchup Backlash, it was one of my favorite finishes that I can remember.
23:30Oh, Spears!
23:33Oh, Spears!
23:35Oh, Spears!
23:37Oh, Spears!
23:38Oh, Michael's got some music!
23:40Michael and Cena fell on Orton, and it's over!
23:43My God, I don't believe it!
23:45The end of that match is insane.
23:47The timing is ridiculous.
23:49The audience and the crowd is there for all of it.
23:53It's a masterpiece.
23:53Bottom line, John Cena is, by God, still the WWE Champion!
24:01In 2016, the WWE Draft saw Women's Champion Charlotte Flair taking her talents exclusively to the Raw brand,
24:09leaving SmackDown without a title to compete for.
24:12I was the best for over 300 days.
24:18The Queen was designated the Raw Women's Champion, and in turn, the SmackDown Women's Championship was born.
24:24Each one of you has the potential to be the face of the Team Blue Women's Division.
24:29At the 2016 event, a six-pack elimination challenge was held to determine the inaugural SmackDown Women's Champion.
24:38And that's what it's all about!
24:40It was a really exciting time in the company, because this was a new championship, and needed credibility instantly.
24:49The Women's Division was hot at that time.
24:52Because you had Carmella, Alexa Bliss, me, Nadia, Nikki Bella, and there was Naomi.
24:59Naomi's coming!
25:01Everybody wants to win the match. Everybody wants to be the Women's Champion.
25:04Natalya has just eliminated Naomi from the six-pack challenge.
25:09And the girls are competitive, just like the guys.
25:11And Natalya's out!
25:13Oh, Carmella, Jack to the cover of Bella! She's been eliminated too!
25:17It's down to Becky Lynch and Carmella!
25:26The whole crowd starts chomping back to me.
25:29There was only one person they wanted to see us chomping, that was me.
25:32Oh!
25:34The server!
25:35The server!
25:46The server!
26:11The server!
26:12The server!
26:13The server!
26:16The server!
26:17bumps at ringside as the Lyon faithful showed their appreciation and brought a sheer energy
26:22and excitement that won't soon be forgotten.
26:29You are looking live at the sold out LDLC arena in Lyon, France.
26:36This is Backlash.
26:39Corey, it is loud as hell in here tonight.
26:43The crowd is just so loud, so excited for us to be there.
26:47One of my absolute favorite moments in my career, from the fan reaction to the match, you feed off that
26:54crowd.
26:55Kevin Owens soaking in an incredible moment.
26:59The decibel level on that one, it definitely ranks up there.
27:02It's got to be one of the top ones we've done.
27:07When they're excited like that, so are all of us.
27:11I've never done anything like this.
27:13Like the walls are moving.
27:15This is nuts.
27:15I'm listening to this crowd firsthand, and I'm just thinking, wow.
27:26They took me to another level that I hadn't been in a long time.
27:31The camera is bouncing.
27:33It's a traditional celebratory song here in France.
27:41Good luck to anyone who thinks they can come close to Lyon, France that night.
27:46That was such an amazing moment for me.
27:49An absolutely incredible night.
27:52Thank you, Lyon, for Backlash.
27:59Two superstars that were no strangers to absolute carnage were the brothers of destruction, Kane and The Undertaker.
28:06In 2001, the Satanic siblings were WWE Tag Team Champions.
28:10How impressive is The Undertaker on Sunday at WrestleMania?
28:14But standing in their way was an unlikely alliance between WWE Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin and Intercontinental Champion Triple
28:22H.
28:23The two most dominant men in the World Wrestling Federation.
28:28At Backlash 2001, all the respective titles were on the line in a winner-take-all match.
28:38This will be a slobber-knocker main event.
28:42Two-man power trip.
28:43Triple H and so-called Steve Austin against the Brothers of Destruction.
28:47I remember this match being pretty, like, chaotic and wild for sure.
28:52This is what they call for all the marvels.
28:55The twin powers of doom asserting themselves.
28:59Look at the ring and see two guys like that with that mystique about each one of them.
29:05Man, I mean, that's something that's just straight out of a comic book.
29:10You have to admire the teamwork of Austin and Triple H here.
29:14The guys that I trust the most in the ring with, those three guys, it was a lot of fun
29:19to be a part of that.
29:21Oh, my God!
29:22Oh, no!
29:23Stunner on Kane!
29:25Austin knocked over the railing by The Undertaker.
29:28But the game's got the sledgehammer!
29:30And right ahead!
29:32Hit Kane in the head!
29:33No!
29:34No, God!
29:35No, damn it!
29:36No!
29:37New tag team champions!
29:39When you have every championship that there is for you to gain in WWE, I think that just kind of
29:45honestly solidifies a legacy.
29:47The two-man power trip have all the gold!
29:53At WrestleMania 19, The Rock defeated his longtime rival, the Texas Rattlesnake Stone Cold Steve Austin.
30:00A hook to the leg!
30:02You've done it!
30:03History has been made!
30:05The following night on Raw, a rock appreciation night was held by the man himself.
30:09I like that.
30:09The rock likes that.
30:10I like that.
30:11But the party came to a screeching halt when WCW legend Goldberg made his long-awaited debut in WWE.
30:18WWE, you're next!
30:23Oh, how long have we been waiting for this?
30:26And here we go.
30:27Sit back and enjoy, folks.
30:29The Rock and Goldberg.
30:30I think that coming from WCW to WWE and making that splash, it had to be with the right person.
30:39No!
30:40Oh!
30:41It's so much power.
30:43It was the opportunity to create something that was once in a lifetime.
30:48Oh, no!
30:49Oh, straight to!
30:50Oh!
30:50Straight to that steel pump!
30:53Oh!
30:53Oh!
30:54Oh!
30:54Oh!
30:54Oh!
30:54Oh!
30:56Oh!
31:00He's an entertainer, and I'm a competitor.
31:03What the hell is that?
31:04That spear out of nowhere!
31:07Oh, no!
31:08I don't love what I think is about to happen!
31:10Oh, no!
31:11Oh!
31:12Oh!
31:12And he fears the rock again!
31:13Oh, my God!
31:14And Goldberg calling for picks up the great one!
31:18Oh, my God!
31:19Oh, the jackhammer slam!
31:21The jackhammer slam by Goldberg!
31:24Oh, I can't believe it!
31:25I think he was instrumental in my success immediately at the WWE.
31:30Could a new era be dawning!
31:35A few rivalries were as explosive during the late 1990s than that of The Rock and Stone Cold
31:40Steve Austin, a conflict fueled on pure contempt.
31:44The two paragons of the wrestling world relished in getting their hands on one another and claiming
31:49the top spot in all of WWE.
31:51There ain't no way that Stone Cold Steve Austin will ever beat The Rock!
31:58There ain't no way that Stone Cold Steve Austin is going to go into backlash and not come back with
32:04that belt!
32:05Smile for the camera, Austin, because the great one said so.
32:12The title is on the line here!
32:14Remember, no holds barred!
32:16There must be a winner in this matchup!
32:19We had a guy like Stone Cold Steve Austin who came along who was all about attitude, all about bucking
32:24the system.
32:24This is not a wrestling match!
32:27This is nothing more than a Sunday night fist fight!
32:30Rock is important for Stone Cold because he gave me one of the best opponents, if not the best opponent
32:36I've ever had.
32:37Rock! Rock! Rock! Rock! What is Rock doing?
32:39Get out of the camera! Get out of the camera!
32:40There was this classic moment where Rock commandeered the ringside camera.
32:45Rock commandeered the camera! Look at this!
32:47Don't go! You go directly to hell, and you'll take that with your compliments on Rock!
32:54And Rock was cool. So cool that he could suffer humiliation and still be the man.
33:01Hey, Rock! Put that camera back! Hey, Rock!
33:03Oh, s**t!
33:04The stick is out!
33:06The stick is out!
33:07The craziest thing is, he takes a stunner while holding the camera, so you get his POV.
33:14Good God of mine!
33:16This is maybe the first or one of the first times where we saw anyone truly sort of break the
33:21fourth wall.
33:22Something very unique and special that was just able to be authentic.
33:27Austin wins! Austin wins!
33:31The death-defying antics of Shane McMahon are not for the faint of heart.
33:35Putting his body in the line for the fans countless times, seemed like something Shane O'Mac did just for the
33:41fun of it.
33:42Oh my God! Shane with a broke hit!
33:46Backlash 2001. The Boy Wonder was set to take on the Colossal Big Show in a last-man-standing match.
33:53Once the match started, the Giant looked high and low.
33:55But he couldn't find Shane.
33:58Which way did he go?
34:00Shane O'Mac decided he would take a giant leap of faith.
34:06Well, Shane McMahon, if he knows no fear, he'll not be intimidated.
34:11It's all about telling that physical story.
34:15And Shane McMahon using that Kindle stick.
34:17How then do you create this atmosphere and the excitement where everyone is just going,
34:23oh, and they want to see more?
34:25And man, you get goosebumps thinking about it.
34:27Now the big man's got a weapon!
34:30That pie!
34:30Shane wanted to entertain the fans, and for him giving everything out was taking a ridiculous risk.
34:36And Shane McMahon doing the smartest thing that he could do,
34:40and that's to get as far away from the Big Show as he can.
34:43But the Big Show's following him!
34:45There's Tess!
34:47Tess with that big shot!
34:49The Big Show and Tess had caught the altercation last week,
34:53and Tess hasn't forgotten.
34:56Oh, Tess!
34:56What?
34:56Oh my God, don't do it, Shane!
34:58Don't do it!
34:59Oh my God!
35:00Oh my God!
35:02Oh my God!
35:03He went out there and put it all on the line.
35:06And I think fearless.
35:07What's the term?
35:08There is no third gear.
35:09There's first gear and sixth gear.
35:11He had that sixth gear.
35:14He had to be 50 feet in the air!
35:17That goes down in the annals of time of one of the coolest things I've ever done.
35:22Shane McMahon is just the last man standing!
35:28In 2002, the WWE Universe witnessed the return of the immortal Hulk Hogan to his rightful home.
35:34I never thought that Hulkamania today would be running wilder and stronger than it's ever been.
35:40The icon would soon find himself in the world title picture with the King of Kings, Triple H.
35:46It will be an honor for me to be in the ring with the immortal Hulk Hogan.
35:58The young lion to fight the older lion!
36:01That was the guy we watched growing up and being a kid again and stepping in the ring with Hulk
36:07Hogan.
36:07And so it was really cool.
36:09When I wrestled Triple H, I was a little bit nervous going out there.
36:13You know, because he was real hungry and real aggressive.
36:15Come on, Hulk Hogan!
36:16Made for an interesting match.
36:18This championship is as much a part of the game's life as any fiber in his being.
36:24But the same can be said for Hollywood Hulk Hogan.
36:28There are certain moments that are surreal.
36:31Standing in the ring and looking at Hulk Hogan pointing at the whole crowd going, you.
36:35It was just a part of you that stepped back in your life to a little kid.
36:39It makes you realize, like, holy cow, this is quite a life.
36:43Look out here!
36:44It's a leg drop!
36:46Hogan's up the leg drop!
36:47The referee's there!
36:49There's a kill!
36:50Whatever!
36:51Oh, my God!
36:52Hogan's done it!
36:53My God!
36:54My God, he's done it!
36:55Oh, my God!
36:57The celebration afterwards was like a dream.
36:59You know, I never dreamed that I would be the champ again.
37:02Never dreamed I'd be in front of the WWE Universe.
37:05Never dreamed that the fans would keep this dream alive so long.
37:09I mean, this was long for the books to win that title again.
37:12We have witnessed a rebirth of Hulkamania!
37:19Stars across the globe have always been drawn to the spectacle of WWE.
37:24Ha, ha, ha!
37:25Snoop!
37:26Perhaps none as impressive as Latin hip-hop icon.
37:30Bad Bunny is here!
37:32The hottest star on the planet.
37:37After interfering in a match at Wrestlemania 39.
37:40Bunny took the chain!
37:43Bad Bunny now had a score to settle with his former ally turned bitter rival.
37:47I'm gonna end your entire career!
37:49Don't do this, please!
37:51No!
37:52And what better place to do it than his home, the island of Puerto Rico, in a San Juan street
37:58fight.
37:59I'm going to Puerto Rico to kick your ass.
38:08It is a San Juan street fight where anything goes.
38:13You don't know who Bad Bunny is.
38:14You're not living under a rock.
38:16You're living under a mountain.
38:18Here on the island that made hardcore famous, Bad Bunny!
38:23I'll be honest, I've never felt a ring rumble.
38:28We're in Bad Bunny's entrance.
38:29It's the first time in my career that I've felt that.
38:31Let the games begin!
38:34I've worked with Bunny.
38:35I know what he brings to the table.
38:37Bunny's the kind of celebrity that comes in.
38:39He's gonna do it.
38:39Bunnies can fly!
38:40It was bigger than any one-winner loss.
38:43Oh!
38:44Oh, God, no!
38:46No, my God!
38:48He basically got the world known.
38:50We can do this, and we can do it anywhere.
38:52The Bunny Destroyer!
38:59Bad Bunny with the win!
39:01I was very proud of that.
39:03Every aspect of that felt so special.
39:05Tonight belongs to San Juan and Bad Bunny!
39:13It's now time for our number one moment,
39:16and it's one of the most brutal matches in WWE history.
39:20In early 2004, Mick Foley and Randy Orton were locked in a bitter rivalry,
39:24following in a violent confrontation at the Royal Rumble.
39:27How personal is this between Foley and Orton?
39:31The King of Hardcore would soon issue a challenge
39:34for Orton's Intercontinental Championship at Backlash 2004.
39:38No rules!
39:39No holds barred!
39:41What's it gonna be, Randy?
39:43Yes!
39:47Randy Orton may be in store for a beating here tonight at Backlash.
39:52Has this started already?
39:53This is not right!
39:54It's a Newhoods-Barred match.
39:56The match itself was just crazy.
40:00Oh, my God!
40:02A body snap on a bit of the barbed wire!
40:05If you call yourself a legend killer, we'll improve it.
40:09Oh, my God!
40:11It's thousands of thumbtacks!
40:13I remember sprinkling those thumbtacks on the ground,
40:16and I knew it was gonna...
40:19...hurt.
40:22Oh, my God!
40:23Oh, my God!
40:24Oh, my God!
40:26He looks like a human pincushie!
40:28Oh, my God!
40:29Oh, my God!
40:30The match played to all my strengths
40:33and shied away from what we thought were his strengths.
40:37Oh, my God!
40:38Oh, my God!
40:40And yet he hung in there.
40:42Ball's down anywhere!
40:44My God!
40:45Orton's gonna sell it around, but I don't know how he did it!
40:47I didn't think he was tough enough, but he is!
40:49Oh, my God!
40:50Oh, my God!
40:51We are KOing that bad!
40:52That did it!
40:53It's over!
40:53I can tell there was a shift where the fans started taking me more seriously after that.
41:00We saw a different side of Randy Orton!
41:05Backlash has been the stage for countless unforgettable matches and moments,
41:09giving the WWE Universe a front-row seat to the birth of bitter rivalries
41:13and the end of the excruciating contentions.
41:16As long as someone is looking for a fight, the hits will keep on coming.
41:21That'll do it for this edition of WWE's Greatest Moments.
41:24I hope you've enjoyed this look back at the best of Backlash.
