A major scandal has rocked Taiwan’s cosmetic surgery industry after hidden cameras were discovered disguised as smoke detectors in several clinic chains. Authorities launched a nationwide investigation following nearly 100 complaints, the majority involving the prominent chain Airlee.

00:09These hidden cameras have been found at multiple cosmetic clinics in Taiwan in the past week,

00:17that they are cracking down on whoever is behind this.
00:33The owner of this clinic says the equipment was kept from a previous tenant of the space,
00:37Air Li, one of the biggest cosmetic clinics in Taiwan.
00:40And now it's at the center of the scandal.
00:43Last week, a customer called in police to inspect a suspected hidden camera
00:47at an Air Li clinic in New Taipei City.
00:50Police found a camera that was connected to a power source.
00:53Taipei City government also says it's recently received 90 complaints about secret filming,
00:5881 of them from Air Li customers.
01:01Air Li says its surveillance system is meant to ensure treatment quality.
01:05Now a countrywide investigation into cosmetic clinics is underway,
01:09with others suspected of secretly filming customers too.
01:13Now some clients with upcoming treatments are worried
01:15their images could be taken and shared without their consent.
01:18They want to cancel appointments,
01:20but they say the clinics have not made the process easy.
01:38multiple people, including the Air Li chair, an assistant, and a supplier,
01:42have been detained for suspected sexual privacy violations,
01:45and several IT engineers at another clinic chain have been listed as defendants.
01:50For now, investigators are trying to find out who is behind the hidden cameras,
01:55what their purpose may have been, and whether any footage was circulated.
