00:00Luke here with the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel and I'm spending the next six
00:03days here in the Arctic of Alaska. I'm gonna be solo camping in my hot tent on
00:08the frozen Bering Sea. I'm gonna be fishing for king crab through the ice,
00:11hunting for ptarmigan, and my family's gonna be joining me later on as well.
00:41All right guys, welcome to Gnome Alaska.
00:46Ah, got one room, two rooms.
00:57Gnome's got a population of about three and a half thousand people and it's
01:00about a one and a half hour jet flight from Anchorage. It's an old historic
01:03mining town here in Alaska. Oh look at that beautiful sunrise. It's been a crazy
01:11winter here in Alaska. Gnome only got snow a few weeks ago. Usually this time of year
01:16the ocean's frozen solid we can go out and fish on it. I have real concerns about
01:20that. My friend John lives down here. First thing I'm gonna do is swing by his
01:27house. Hey John. It's good to see you. Thank you for having me. So how about this
01:35weather man? It's been a weird winter huh? Three different people have already told
01:39me about how weird the ice is. Oh yeah. I already have two pots out there. Two of
01:43them are set and two of them are on the ice so we can set them. I brought two
01:49shrimp pots. We're gonna try for some shrimp too.
02:05So we're gonna be taking this gear out onto the frozen Bering Sea to go look for
02:09some king crab and shrimp. And right now we're on frozen saltwater. This is the
02:14Gnome Harbor right here. We'll see how the ice is doing because apparently a large
02:18chunk of it broke off and drifted away. So we don't want to be on one of those when
02:24that happens.
02:32there's some gold miners diving for gold under the ice over there. We go check it
02:37out.
02:42This is someone's gold claim. Doesn't look like they're here though. They'll use the
02:46auger to cut a big hole in the ice and then they'll send a diver down to the bottom with
02:51with a big vacuum dredge and he'll suck up the sand and gold off the bottom and send
02:55it through this sluice box right here. The divers will have to have a boiler that pumps
03:00hot water into their wetsuit in order to be able to stay down and work in the cold temperatures.
03:05It's pretty hardcore stuff.
03:15Is that a fox? There's a fox on the ice pack over there.
03:22I was wondering what that fox was doing on the ice pack. Looks like he was hunting ducks.
03:29Look at all the organs and meat are just picked clean. It's been such a warm year that there's
03:34still ducks out. That's unbelievable. There's almost never ducks this time of year.
03:43Nice flat area.
04:14Not too bad.
04:24Woo. Exercise.
04:26Oh, there we go. All the cows here alone try to do this.
04:37Alright. So this is a little bit of an experiment. Fishing for king crab through the ice is really
04:42popular here. But I haven't met anybody who fishes for shrimp through the ice. But last
04:47year there was tons of shrimp being caught in the crab pots. So I thought, hey, if we bring a
04:51proper shrimp pot with a proper mesh size, we might really catch a ton of shrimp.
04:56You got some frozen salmon heads for bait.
05:07Put a little styrofoam over the hole to keep it from icing up and then put a piece of plywood
05:12on top
05:12of that to keep snow machines from going in. That and marking it with a stick should warn anybody.
05:17Alright, let's go get another spot.
05:39Wife, no. We'd love to.
05:44We'll let those sit overnight. We're going to go check a couple crab pots that have been soaking.
06:02There she is.
06:06There's a couple.
06:07There's a couple, yeah.
06:09And the starfish.
06:11Nice.
06:12There you go.
06:14Oh, look at that. It's pretty. Yeah, those are nice sized ones.
06:18Look at the size of that.
06:23There we go. Look at that.
06:26Big old Alaskan red king crab.
06:28I think it weighs about, what, two, three pounds?
06:30Look at that big old king crab.
06:36More starfish.
06:41Looks like another male.
06:43Another gorgeous crab.
06:46He's going to tuck his legs to get inside that cooler.
06:49These are big crabs.
06:50Especially that one.
06:51That one's...
06:51That's a chonky crab.
06:59You know.
07:03Keep...
07:04You know.
07:11Grab one of them.
07:14Wahhh.
07:16Oh, that's a jumbo starfish though.
07:19The starfish was eating this little sculpin.
07:23Well, enjoy your meal.
07:24Bacon grease, tomkots, salmon.
07:50Oh, that thing broke off.
07:55That auger broke.
07:57That's why it went crazy.
08:01We're gonna go head back to town and see about getting another auger.
08:13In the summertime, the gold miners dredge off of these boats, there's a whole bunch of
08:17them all pulled up out of the ice.
08:26So I want to go camping on the ice pack tonight, so I'm gonna go get my camping gear out
08:31of
08:31the hotel.
08:32While I do that, John's gonna go ahead and hunt down an auger.
08:37I got camping gear and now I just need some food and supplies.
08:42Let's stop in here at the AC store and get some groceries.
09:07Alright, we got an auger.
09:09We got our gear.
09:10Let's go.
09:25Let's go.
09:29Let's go.
09:38Let's go.
10:07I can see a little bit of snow.
10:08Oh yeah.
10:09There's quite a bit of snow in here.
10:10It's probably melting into the air filter.
10:12Oh, I see.
10:13Oh, look at all that snow.
10:14Yeah.
10:16That'll do it.
10:17This is all wet too.
10:20Yeah, that'll do it.
10:21I'm two for two for breaking John's augers, but I like to mix it up a little bit.
10:25So this time I got a whole bunch of snow and water in the air filter, which has flooded
10:29the engine with water, which isn't good.
10:54Alright, there we go.
10:55Got a nice little spot out here on the Bering Sea.
10:58Got two holes to fish through.
11:00Now I just need to set up my tent.
11:06Normal tent stakes won't go into ice, so you have to use screws.
11:22Every single time I set this thing up though, it's bigger than I remember.
11:40While I was fussing with the tent, John cut another hole for a crab pot.
11:56Perfect.
11:57We'll let that sit and see what's there tomorrow.
11:59But I'm feeling pretty good about this spot for as far as fishing goes, but there's one downside.
12:05We're really close to the edge of the ice.
12:07From time to time, large chunks of ice break off and drift off towards Russia.
12:21This right here is loose moving ice.
12:23You can see it, it's actually drifting right there.
12:29To give you an idea of how close we are to the edge, that's our crab pot and right back
12:36there is my tent.
12:37Other than the ice breaking underneath me and drifting off to sea, my only other real concern
12:42is polar bears.
12:43Normally the polar bears don't come around Nome until the ice breaks up.
12:47And that usually doesn't happen until April, but you know, the ice is breaking up.
12:52So you know, I'm sure, I'm sure there won't be any polar bears.
12:56It'll be fine.
12:58It'll be fine.
13:00It'll be fine.
13:05Let's see how we're doing in here.
13:11I'm going to borrow some of this foam from John, give me something to sit on.
13:23This right here is a titanium wood stove, weighs about a pound and a half.
13:40This is a titanium wood stove.
13:41Oh.
13:42Oh.
13:49Oh.
13:53Oh.
13:54Oh.
13:55Oh.
13:56Oh.
13:56Oh.
13:59Oh.
14:23All right.
14:24There we go.
14:25It's warming up nicely in here.
14:27I've got my gloves hanging up so they can dry and I think it's time to start doing some fishing
14:34So this right here is a crab snare. You tie it to the end of your line
14:37You put some bait inside the cage and you drop it down at the bottom of the ocean
14:41And a crab will come along and start eating on it and hopefully
14:45One of his legs will get caught in these little snares. I've got a frozen tom cod here
14:52Some shrimp pellets
14:59Alright, I've got a little lure. I'm going to drop down there and see if there's any tom cod or
15:03flounder
15:12Alright, we've got two rods set up. We'll see if anything moves them
15:16My boots are kind of wet and my feet are very cold
15:19The thing about hot tents is all the heat rises
15:22So it's really cold down here on the floor and it's really hot up here
15:26So if I can get my boots up higher, they're going to dry out
15:34Hang my socks up
15:41Put my boots next to the stove and see if they dry off
15:53Let that warm up
15:55Let that warm up
16:15Ah, it's a classic grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup
16:26Ah, that's good
16:28I think I'm going to go ahead and top off that grilled cheese sandwich with a nice little dessert
16:32I worked hard today. I earned it
16:37I think it's time to hit the sack
16:40Now I want to keep the fire going all night
16:42But I don't want to be waking up and stoking it all the time
16:44So I'm going to use one of these Duraflame logs
16:47And there we go
16:50And there we go
17:20ah my sleeping bag starting to warm up and it feels good i'm so tired i'm just gonna sit here
17:25and watch my fishing rods but unless i get something on i'll see you guys in the morning
17:31well good morning it's about 8 a.m and as far as i know i haven't drifted off to russia
17:36and i
17:36haven't been eaten by a polar bear very strong start to today i haven't seen any action on the
17:41rods but i think they're both frozen in the hole so uh i might have to break that loose and
17:46see
17:46what's going on i'm not 100 sure what the temperature is outside but i can tell it's dropped
17:51aggressively it's cold in here it's really cold you can kind of use the frost line to gauge how
17:57cold it is outside the higher up it is the colder it is it feels like it might be close
18:02to zero
18:02degrees fahrenheit outside it's pretty cold but the sun's gonna come up in about a half an hour and i
18:07am completely out of firewood so if i don't want it to get really cold in here i better go
18:12outside
18:12start cutting some more wood oh i am bleeding feathers
18:22my boots the toe box is dry and warm and this part is very cold
18:28my ankle is icy cold and my toes are so warm it feels really weird
18:49i think i want to check the fishing rods now see what's up
18:52so the hole's iced over my line's stuck so i could have a fish on i wouldn't even know it
19:06oh look at this a little crab oh he was tangled up in my line he's kind of fuzzy
19:15oh it's a female crab oh she's got eggs see she's those are her eggs in there i don't know
19:21what kind
19:22of crab that is but let's put her back the shrimp and crabs have been at it look the bait's
19:27all
19:27bones there's hardly any flesh left on the bait i'll have to freshen that up
19:36i got the rods rebated and dropped back down we'll see if anything hits while i make some food
19:52all right
19:58oh curses well i just lost an egg i'll have to refinance the house to get another
20:03let's see if we can keep this one on the skillet stay where you are mr egg
20:11hey hey nope nope
20:19there we go a little egg and sausage sandwich the ketchup isn't frozen but it's thicker than normal
20:31well we made it to sunrise i think it's time to check my fishing rods and see if we got
20:35anything
20:37oh something what was that oh something dropped off
20:43it wasn't a crab but there was like a starfish or something attached to it
20:47saw it drop off right at the hole
20:56it's cold it's about 10 degrees outside
21:01well it is a beautiful day out here i think i'm going to clean up a little bit then we're
21:06going to go check the shrimp pots
21:10alrighty
21:21well we got one starfish and there's a crab in here but it's not a king crab
21:30i don't know what kind of crab that is but we'll let it go
21:36there there's a sculpin see he's going up like this to make himself big so you can't swallow
21:41him we'll let him go throw a fresh salmon head in there try it again see what happens
21:53here's the second shrimp pot
22:02that's disappointing there were so many shrimp in this spot last year they were getting stuck in
22:06your rope been really weird weather this year so i guess it shouldn't be a surprise that the
22:10animals are behaving different all right i'm going to go check one of the crabs traps
22:20this is a new crab trap john dropped down last night we'll see if it's got anything in it
22:33there we go there's one there's two two good looking males right there not skunked look at that
22:49yeah two crabs it's not bad for less than 24 hours
22:57tell you what this spot's been a bit of a bust i don't know if i want to camp here
23:01a second night
23:10well the wind's starting to pick up and that's making me a little nervous
23:13never tried this tent in high winds before but i wouldn't want to test it
23:42but the crab fishing's a bit slow i think i'm going to drop this stuff off at job it's place
23:46and then go grab my gun and do a little tarmigan hunting after john gets off work
23:50i think we come back and check the pots
24:14the hardest part about hunting
24:16ptarmigan is fighting them i'm looking for an all-white bird in the middle of all this snow
24:21that's why it's so important to go on these sunny days
24:41right there
24:43i just saw one tarmigan up on that berm and he just hopped over into the brush
24:51oh there they go they just flew over there these are all tarmigan footprints right here
24:56all right let's go find their buddies
25:06i can see a whole bunch of tarmigan prints right along those willows
25:10look right there
25:15i keep seeing tarmigan but they're skittish very skittish
25:29i saw red fox run out in front of me in the old days they used to hunt them by
25:34running
25:35them over with the snow machine doesn't damage the pelt as much as shooting them
25:43well sun's getting low i think it's time to get heading back but this has been real fun
25:56hey john sorry to keep you waiting
26:02all right we're gonna go check some crab pots
26:12yeah there wasn't much ice forming yesterday today it's a different story
26:19oh one and a starfish it's another male right
26:24uh-huh there we go they are so cool all right okay i'll put them in the cooler before he
26:37freezes
26:37up
26:48that's a big old crab right there yeah look at all the sea lice they're eating
26:54on the bait all right
27:02all right we're gonna try the shrimp pot
27:09another one of those little fuzzy crabs oh i got a little sea urchin in here
27:17you just grab it with the knife
27:25oh that is interesting it's a definitely an ocean flavor but it's different than i've
27:30got a little sea urchin
27:31you see it with the big foyer
27:35you see it with the big foyer
27:41yeah yeah yeah yeah
27:44down until we're ready we'll take it home
27:55i'll tell you what i'm glad i pulled the ted down it's supposed to get the 30 mile per hour
27:59winds tonight
28:05my feet are so wet and cold i cannot wait to get these boots off
28:12oh this is nice i'll see you in the morning
28:19all right
28:23oh my god
28:30all right
28:31I didn't sleep very well last night i woke up with this headache just nasty
28:42I'm not 100% but I'm feeling a little better so I think I'm going to go try doing a
28:47little hunting
28:49oh it's colder today feel it in the nose
29:02the ice shelf broke away here in front of town
29:05just last week people were goldmining and crabbing out there
29:18look at that thing yeah that's a sweet K truck
29:42I just haven't seen anything
29:51well me and John are going to go set some more crab pots we heard there's a spot a little
29:56further down that's producing
30:10this place is called Cripple River it's a little seasonal native community where they come here for subsistence fishing in
30:17the summer
30:17nobody here this time of year there's lots of little seasonal fishing communities like this around Alaska
30:24yeah
30:45our fingers are getting cold just watching you oh it's actually mine are hot because if you keep moving
30:51they really don't feel the cold

40:09Patrick had a baby!
40:09Patrick had a baby!
40:11Tell the others what we did here!
40:16So, we found a good sea urchin spot!
40:19I hope you put that in your GPS!
40:20Oh yeah!
40:30You wanted to be heavy!
40:32Alright!
40:34I see a starfish!
40:35Starfish!
40:36I see a lot of stingy starfish!
40:38Yep!
40:42That way it's not too far!
40:44Thanks for letting us come along!
40:46These are so good to hang out with!
40:48Yeah!
40:49Jacob's getting pretty cold!
40:50I think we better get him home!
40:52Thank you!

40:54We'll head out there!
40:54We'll check that pod!
40:55Hopefully lots of crabs!
40:56We'll go inside.
41:07We'll check it out there!
41:08...i know the tunnel!
41:10Thank you!
41:12Oh, thank you!
41:14Thank you!
41:16Oh!
41:28All right Tom, ready to go ptarmigan honey?
41:30Yes sir.
41:32Okay, I got my end reach with me.
41:41All right Tom, so this is it.
41:44We got these willow patches along this creek.
41:53There's some right up there.
41:56Look at that flock of them.
42:13Watch, are you going to walk around a little bit more?
42:15Yes.
42:16All right, follow me.
42:22Tommy, how many tarbicans have we seen? Hundreds, right?
42:25So they keep flying off before we can get up close to them.
42:29Should we keep looking around?
42:30Yeah.
42:30Oh, this is, this is fun.
42:35See a flock of them right there.
42:56Oh, there we go.
42:57Finally got one.
42:59We're right back where we started.
43:07Well, it's about six o'clock at the sun setting on us.
43:10I think we need to head back home.
43:12Well, we better get this bird gutted.
43:18All righty.
43:31Hello, anybody home?
43:33Hi.
43:33How are you?
43:34Hi.
43:35Oh my goodness.
43:35You're so cold.
43:37You're so cold.
43:39Snot sickles fall off.
43:42Tom, was that fun?
43:43That was so fun.
43:45I wish we had all the time in the world to just go out and do that.
43:49Have you had a nice day today, guys?
43:51Yes, I have.
43:52Well, it has been a wonderful day and tomorrow will be just as lovely.
43:56We're going to bed.
43:57We'll see you guys then.
43:58Well, good morning, everybody.
44:00It's a beautiful Sunday here in Gnome and I'm going to get some breakfast going.
44:08We got a couple of leftover danishes we want to eat for breakfast.
44:10Of course, they're a little bit more stale than they were yesterday.
44:13So, I'm going to run them under water and throw them in an oven.
44:16Put them in a paper bag and just briefly put it under water.
44:20Heat up the oven to about 350.
44:23Give it about five minutes and they'll be soft and warm.
44:28Ooh, feel that.
44:30Feel it.
44:31Is it better?
44:32Yeah, it's better.
44:33Come on.
44:35Well, it's Sunday and we're going to church in the next 15 minutes or so.
44:39So, I got to get the car started.
44:46It's negative 10.
44:48It's a little cold.
44:50Oh, the ptarmigan froze nicely.
44:54Alright guys, come on, get your shoes on.
44:56Okay.
44:58Turning on your electric jacket.
45:00I know.
45:00It really was a good buy.
45:01It keeps me warm.
45:02I love it.
45:05Car's been warming up for 16 minutes and it's still icy.
45:10It's cold out.
45:16Looks like we're here at church.
45:17We're going to put the camera down and we'll see you guys in a little bit.
45:20Nice crew.
45:21Hi.
45:22They had a potluck after church.
45:23That was nice.
45:24That was really nice.
45:25People are so friendly and I'm full.
45:27Haha.
45:28Yeah, but we have to go get them on.
45:31Here, you guys want to go get changed and then let's go look for muskox.
45:35Mom really wants to go see if we can spot a muskox.
45:37Yeah.
45:41Muskox, muskox.
45:42What a pretty day though.
45:44The ocean's starting to freeze up again.
45:46Look at that.
45:47See right there?
45:47There's a snow machine trail along the road.
45:50That's the Iditarod Trail.
45:51It's about an 1100 mile race that ends the Gnome.
45:56There's wild muskox around the city of Gnome.
45:59You can see them up on the hills from time to time.
46:03Check up on the mountain up there, the dots.
46:08I'm pretty sure we saw a muskox the other day.
46:10It was so far, it was just a little dot on the mountain.
46:13But the dot's not there anymore, so I think it was a muskox.
46:17A little knob right there.
46:18Yeah, it feels looking good here.
46:20How far from the top are they?
46:21Pretty near the top.
46:22I mean, that looks like that might be two muskox.
46:25That one's a real bobby dog.
46:27We're going to get some crabs.
46:30I'm going to take some crabs back to some friends.
46:38That's nice.
46:41There's a nice one.
46:48There's a nice chunky one.
46:54Got some crab in the bed there.
46:56I don't want them to freeze before we get home, so I'm going to bury them in snow.
47:04There we go.
47:05There we go.
47:07It's snippy out there.
47:09You know in Hawaii how they have the honor boxes?
47:11Those are like king crab honor boxes.
47:14We're sliding, sliding, sliding, sliding.
47:19Let's just turn while we slide.
47:21Okie doke.
47:21Very good.
47:25We're flying home with those crabs tomorrow, so I'm going to go ahead and cook them and freeze them tonight.
47:51We got all these hot crab legs.
47:53Let's take them out to negative ten and flash freeze them.
48:01Let those freeze.
48:03They'll go faster than the freezer.
48:06Well John just texted me and said he got a whole bunch of crabs in his pot and I have
48:09some stuff I want to give him.
48:10So we're going to run over and say goodbye to him and see how we did.
48:16It's the king of gnome crabbing!
48:20You got nine in two pots?
48:22Yeah, one of them had four, the other had five.
48:25That's pretty impressive.
48:26I got one thing.
48:28You sure about that John?
48:30I'm going back tomorrow.
48:31I will put him to use.
48:34I will give him a loving home.
48:35These are nice crabs man.
48:38Look at this.
48:40Look at that home.
48:43Big but it's better than nothing.
48:45Oh they are just big enough.
48:48These are big enough.
48:53Thank you so much John.
48:55Not just for the crab, but for the whole experience.
48:57You guys are wonderful.
48:59Your face hurts.
49:01At these temperatures it's not cold.
49:03It hurts.
49:04It just hurts.
49:10Check this out guys.
49:12Look what John got.
49:13There's 14.
49:14You think we can get 14 crabs into this pot?
49:16I believe.
49:17I think we can do it.
49:18Really nice ones in here.
49:23Oh my goodness.
49:24Can we do it?
49:27It's so close.
49:28I think we're going to have to let this steam for a little bit longer than normal.
49:32That is a pile of crab legs.
49:34Gotta go take them out onto the deck.
49:41Alright.
49:44Those will all be frozen soon and ready to ship back home.
49:47But it's late.
49:48We're going to bed.
49:49We'll see you guys in the morning.
49:50Okay guys.
49:51Everybody to the car.
