The $4,700 Revenge: Why You NEVER Leave Your Key Under the Mat!

Description
Hook: Hell hath no fury like a woman who finds out her boyfriend is cheating on Facebook! Today on JudyExplain, we dive into a case where a messy breakup led to a completely empty apartment.

The Story:
Miss Dunston moved out of Mr. Smith's apartment after discovering evidence of him "fooling around" on social media. But she didn't just take her own things. When Mr. Smith returned, his 7-piece living room set, two TVs, and his entire collection of valuable Jordan sneakers were gone.

The Mistake:
Miss Dunston claimed she simply left the key under the doormat when she moved out, suggesting "anybody" could have walked in and taken the stuff. But Judge Judy wasn't buying it.

The Evidence:
A surprise witness confronted the defendant at a local Walmart, where she reportedly bragged about throwing away or selling his things because he shouldn't have cheated.

The Legal Lesson:
Whether she took the items herself or was simply negligent by leaving the key under a mat, Judge Judy holds her responsible for the loss. In the eyes of the law, "leaving the door open" makes you liable for what happens next.

00:00What happens when you find out your boyfriend is cheating through a Facebook post?
00:05For most people, it's a heartbreak.
00:07For the defendant in today's case, it was a business opportunity.
00:12Welcome back to Judy Explain, where we break down the wildest courtroom moments.
00:17Meet Mr. Smith and his now ex-girlfriend, Ms. Dunstan.
00:21After a year of living together, Ms. Dunstan saw something on social media
00:26that proved Mr. Smith wasn't being faithful.
00:30Angry and hurt, she decided to move out immediately while he wasn't home.
00:34But she didn't just take her suitcase.
00:36She took everything.
00:38When Mr. Smith got back to his apartment, it was like a ghost town.
00:43His seven-piece living room set? Gone.
00:45Two flat-screen TVs? Gone.
00:48Even his prized collection of Jordan sneakers, which he had spent a year working to buy, had vanished.
00:54In court, Ms. Dunstan tried to clay the innocent mistake card.
00:58She told Judge Judy that she simply left the key under the doormat when she moved out.
01:03Her argument was that anybody could have found the key and emptied the place.
01:07But Judge Judy saw right through that story.
01:11The hammer really dropped when a witness stood up and revealed a conversation they had with Ms. Dunstan at a
01:16Walmart.
01:17According to the witness, she actually bragged about taking the stuff, saying,
01:22He shouldn't have cheated on me.
01:24Judge Judy delivered a powerful legal lesson.
01:26By putting the key under the mat, she either stole the property herself or was so negligent that she allowed
01:33it to be stolen.
01:34Either way, she is legally responsible.
01:36Because Mr. Smith had all his receipts ready, Judge Judy didn't hesitate.
01:42She ordered Ms. Dunstan to pay him $4,700.
01:46Justice was served, and a very expensive lesson was learned.
01:50Never leave your keys, or your furniture, in the hands of a scorned ex.
01:55Case closed.
